WHAT TO CONSIDER BEFORE DESIGNING A BEREAVEMENT LEAVE POLICY According to findings by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), 88 percent of employers have set up a bereavement leave policy in their organization. While there is no law requiring a bereavement policy at work, most American employers provide paid time off to employees when a loved one passes away. Like any other paid or unpaid leave, bereavement leave or grievance leave should be a matter of policy. Employers should include the bereavement policy in the handbook if they have one, or refer to our guide below to adhere to the state and federal rules and regulations before designing a bereavement leave policy.
