Recall ● How many projects did we do with Robo? ● What was the reasons for each project? ● How did we create each project?

Lead-in: activate and motivate students asking about their previous knowledge and personal experiences. 4 steps - 5 - 7 min 1.

Ask:

● How many projects did we do with Robo? (We created 7 projects: 1) Robo says Hi; 2) Robo lights up the classroom; 3) Robo drives around; 4) Robo goes to its first journey; 5) Robo travels to Toy town; 6) Robo looks around; 7)Robo meets friends) ● What was the reason for each project? (We always needed to help Robo with a certain task/problem) ● How did we create each project? (We discussed a task or a problem and how we can help Robo => We planned our projects Modules, Actions, other materials => We build Robo => We programmed Robo => We shared our results with others and discussed them.)

Recall ● Have you ever created your own project in your school or daily life? How did you do it? ● Is this process similar to what we did for Robo? ● Do you think that there is a universal plan for creating a project?

Lead-in: activate and motivate students asking about their previous knowledge and personal experiences. 4 steps - 5 - 7 min 1.

Ask students to share their experiences:

●

Have you ever created your own project in your school or daily life? How did you do it?

●

Is this process similar to what we did with Robo?

●

Do you think that there is a universal plan for creating a project?

●

Let’s find out together what a universal plan for creating a project and its steps would be.

Keywords ● Project ● Task ● Plan ● Engineering Design Process

Lead in - 5-7 min 2. Discuss the key words: ●

Project - A planned mission in order to solve a task.

●

Task - An activity or piece of work which you have to do, usually as part of a larger project.

●

Plan - a series of steps to be carried out in order to solve a certain task.

●

There is a special plan for making an engineering project - Engineering Design Process. It’s a series of steps that engineers follow to come up with a solution to a task.

Robo’s Story Robo is happy that it met some fun toys and wants to create a surprise for these new friends. To help Robo design a surprise for his new friends, we will learn about the Engineering Design Process and then use it to build and program a Robo-project.

Lead in - 5-7 min 3. Tell Robo’s Story: Robo is happy that it met some fun toys and wants to create a surprise for these new friends. 4. Lesson’s Goal: To help Robo to design a surprise for his new friends, we will learn about the Engineering Design Process and then use it to build and program a Robo-project.

Engineering Design Process Step 1. Identify a reason: What is the problem or idea? Step 2. Brainstorm: What are the solutions? Step 3. Evaluate and pick one: What would happen if...? Step 4. Sketch and plan: What will I need? Step 5. Work on the solution: Build and program, test, repeat! Step 6. Finalize: Is everything ready? Step 7. Present the solution. Step 8. Reflect: How was it?

Guided Activity- 15-20 min Learn about the Engineering Design Process: ●

Ask students to describe how they would make a project for the set task: How would they start, carry out and finish the project;

●

Collect their answers on the board;

●

Show students the 8 steps of the Engineering Design Process and briefly discuss the steps: Are they similar or different to what students said before?

●

Set the goal: Now we are going to practice the Engineering Design Process. We will go through all these steps together to help our Robo design a surprise for its new friends.

Engineering Design Process

STEP 1: Identify a reason ● What is the task or idea?

=> Create a surprise for Robo’s friends

Guided Activity- 15-20 min STEP 1. Identify a reason ●

Define the reason for a particular Robo-project, ask: What is the task or idea?

●

Reframe it and write it down, be able to explain this reason;

➔

Robo wants to create a surprise for its new friends => Create a surprise for Robo’s friends

Engineering Design Process

STEP 2: Brainstorm ● What are the solutions? ● List as many solutions as possible!

Guided Activity- 15-20 min STEP 2. Brainstorm: What are the solutions? ●

Discuss what it means “to brainstorm” – to come up with new ideas by having a discussion that includes all of the members of a group: to discuss a task and suggest solutions and ideas together.

●

Come up with as many solutions as possible, but do not evaluate them. At this step, the solutions don't necessarily need to be good.

●

➔

List as many solutions as possible! Possible solutions: Throw a party, sing a song, dance, etc.

Engineering Design Process

STEP 3: Evaluate and pick one. ● What would happen if...? ● Pick your best solution!

Guided Activity- 15-20 min STEP 3. Evaluate and pick one. ●

Think about the pros and cons of each solution, discus them by asking “What would happen if...?”

●

List the advantages and disadvantages for each solution;

●

Range the solutions;

●

Pick the best solution and discuss why it is the best one. The best solution can be different for each student!

Engineering Design Process

STEP 4: Sketch and plan ● Sketch the solution ● Plan: Modules, Actions, other materials

Guided Activity- 15-20 min STEP 4. Sketch and plan: What will I need? ●

Make a sketch for the final solution. Discuss what it mean to “sketch” – to create a brief and unfinished description or a drawing of the future project; it allows us to plan the materials we will need.

●

Plan - decide which of Robo’s Modules, Actions in the Robo Code App or other materials you will need for this project.

Note: At this stage students can work in pairs or in small groups in order to sketch and plan a common project.

Engineering Design Process

STEP 5: Work on your solution ● Build and program => Test => Repeat! ● Keep trying!

Guided Activity- 15-20 min STEP 5. Work on your solution: Build and program, test, repeat! ●

Explain to students: Work on your idea and try it out. If the first solution doesn’t work, discuss why and move on to another one.

●

It is important to keep trying until the problem is solved. Do not lose motivation, not all problems are easy to solve.

Note: Students continue working in pairs or in small groups in order to work on the common project.

Engineering Design Process

STEP 6: Finalize - Is everything ready? 1) Robo-build 2) Code 3) Environment

Guided Activity- 15-20 min STEP 6. Finalize: Is everything ready? â—? 1) 2) 3)

As soon as you are done with your solution for the project, finalize it. Check together with your students if everything is ready for a presentation. Robo-build; The code in the Robo Code App; Create an environment for your Robo or customize it.

Engineering Design Process

STEP 7: Present the solution ● Robo’s story ● Robo-build ● Code in the Robo Code App

Guided Activity- 15-20 min STEP 7. Present the solution ● 1) 2) 3)

Show your project to the class: Tell your Robo’s story - What surprise Robo makes. Show the Robo-build - Mechanical Design; Show the code you designed in the Robo Code App.

Engineering Design Process

STEP 8: Reflect ➔ Constructive Feedback ➔ Process: What worked? What didn't? What can you do differently next time?

Guided Activity- 15-20 min STEP 8: Reflect: How was it? ●

Ask your peers for constructive feedback. Discuss what constructive feedback is – information about different aspects of a project whose goal is to improve the quality of this project and to create positive change.

●

Reflect on the process of making the project, ask yourself: What worked? What didn't? What can you do differently next time?

Engineering Design Process Step 1. Identify a reason: What is the problem or idea? Step 2. Brainstorm: What are the solutions? Step 3. Evaluate and pick one: What would happen if...? Step 4. Sketch and plan: What will I need? Step 5. Work on the solution Step 6. Finalize: Is everything ready? Step 7. Present the solution. Step 8. Reect: How was it?

Independent Activity: 15 - 20 min (Optional if you have time left.) Ask students to try another solution for the same project using the Steps 3-8 of the Engineering Design Process and present this solution to the class.
