Workshops The workshops at NETA Training are not like any classroom you have been in before. We replicate the industrial environment to help get you ready for the real demands of working life. You will learn using large-scale equipment and that means applying the professional behaviours and health and safety standards you would find on any industrial site. At NETA the latest technology sits alongside some of the more traditional equipment, as we prepare you for working life in your chosen trade.

PPE Did you know you get free PPE with NETA? At NETA Training, we prioritise the safety and wellbeing of our students, recognising the importance of a secure learning environment. To support you in your studies, we offer personal protective equipment (PPE) that includes essential gear such as boots, overalls, gloves, hats, safety glasses, and ear buds. This initiative not only ensures a safe and conducive atmosphere for hands-on learning but also underscores our commitment to providing comprehensive support for your academic journey. By supplying these vital elements, we want you to feel focused on your studies with confidence, knowing that your safety is our top priority.

Intercollege competition Two of NETA’s dedicated welding students, Cameron and Niamh, represented NETA at the Inter-College Fabrication and Welding Competition at Derwentside College in County Durham.

Boxer Louis brings home his first belt We love sharing our learners’ achievements both in and out of the classroom.

Some of our current pipefitting apprentices are having a run of success, each in their own sporting fields.

Among them, and fighting fit, is 19-year-old Louis. As a young boxer he is working his way up the development league.

Now the up-and-coming sportsman has brought home his first belt, winner of the Tyne Tees and Wear Association USL Championship U51 Male Development Belt.

He told us: “It was my mam that first suggested I give boxing a go.”

Though he admits back then he did take a bit of convincing.

For him, it was a way of building his confidence and regularly working out at the gym, it wasn’t long before he started to get to grips with the basics.

Today Louis is a member of Billingham Boxing Academy, training five or six days a week, with 12 fights under his belt.

He said: “Boxing and training has really helped me, both physically and mentally.”

Kickboxing champ Paddy is fighting fit Our current pipefitting apprentices are a force to be reckoned with.

Among them kickboxer, Paddy, who scooped the International Combat Organisation (ICO) Northern Area Final Title and brought home the Kickboxing (Full Contact) English Title 16-17 years at the 2025 WKO English Open Championships.

“I started kickboxing when I was five or six,” said the 17-year-old from Normanby.

“Back then it was just something that was good to learn.”

Training at the gym six days a week, as well as running most mornings, he is well and truly committed to his sport.

For him, he said, kickboxing not only builds his physical strength, but it is great for his mental wellbeing too.

When he was competing as a child, Paddy admits he became quite blasé about the belts and the silverware, but he said: “Now I have got the buzz for it. When you are in a fight there is so much to lose but when you win, it is a mint feeling.”

He clearly had a talent for the sport as he brought home several titles, even fighting in the World Championships in Germany and England and winning gold at the five nations, but by 12 he decided to take a break.

“That was something that I regretted, and I always planned to take it back up, but I kept putting it off,” he said.

At 16 he eventually returned to the ring, and he hasn’t looked back.

Now training with Impact Martial Arts in South Bank, he is back on form, even having travelled to Austria where he won two bronze medals at the World Championships.

Taking two gold medals and a silver at the 2025 WKO English Open Championships, he was offered the chance to fight for a title and while it was a tough match he won.

Due to open in 2026, this is your chance to study engineering in our new centre with purpose-built workshops and classrooms to match the expert training NETA has long been known for.

The new £14.7m NETA facility, located on Princeton Drive, will deliver NETA’s full range of training services including commercial courses, testing and certification, apprenticeship training and full-time engineering programmes for school-leavers.

The two-storey specialist engineering centre will include bespoke industry workshops for vocational training in the likes of welding, fabrication, electrical, mechanical and pipefitting, as well as domestic and commercial gas training.

Investment will see some of the latest high spec industry-standard equipment sitting alongside traditional heavy-duty machinery, all adding to NETA’s unique sense of character and appeal.

The new NETA Training centre has been made possible with £4.5m investment from the Town Deal Fund, through Thornaby Town Deal Board, delivered in partnership with Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council.

Working with employers, the local and combined authorities, this is the latest in a series of improvement projects delivered by the Education Training Collective, a group of colleges and training provides which includes NETA Training, Stockton Riverside College, Bede Sixth Form, Redcar and Cleveland College and Innersummit.

It is one of the priority interventions set to bring long-term change and investment to Thornaby as part of its £23.9m Town Deal.

Also watch out for the new NETA-led All Access Academy at Redcar and Cleveland College, home to the likes of NETA’s specialist scaffolding, rope access and rigging and lifting training.

Significant funding has also been secured from the Department for Education and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

At our careers in healthcare and early years on-site event, a student expressed to me how they were really unsure what they wanted to do and what path to go down after school. At the end of the day, they told me they wanted to do something in healthcare or early years as they loved the event.

Don’t be too nervous about starting college, everyone is in the same position and you will meet new people with similar interests to you.

I often recognise faces and names of students, from helping them with their application in school, to seeing them at interview night, and then seeing them in the college for enrolment. It is always a rewarding feeling knowing you have been a part of their transition from school to college.

English & maths English and maths are key skills which are used every day. Here at NETA Training we understand the importance of these skills and how much employers value them within the workplace environment.

When you enrol at college, if you have not already achieved a grade 9-4, we will help you work towards these vital qualifications and develop your skills alongside your full-time course.

You will attend weekly sessions with a specialist English or maths tutor who will support you throughout the course.

Did you know?

For students under the age of 19 it is a Government requirement that you keep working towards these core GCSEs if you haven’t already achieved a grade 9-4 in English and maths.

At college, we offer both GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications to support learners at every level and pathway. It is important to us that we support all learners achieve essential qualifications for their next steps.

Learning support

Learning Support/SEN The Learning Support Team is dedicated to making sure our learners receive the support they need. We can arrange a support interview and ensure appropriate support is put in place. Our aim is to make sure our learners are respected and cared for as individuals and are encouraged and supported to always reach their potential. Learning support services include support for students who are visually impaired, have a hearing impairment, those with mobility issues, dyslexia, autism or any learning or physical difficulty and/or disability.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)/ Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) At NETA Training we are committed to supporting you to meet your individual

We will work with you to provide you with the right resources, support, and services to meet your needs, achieve your outcomes and help you to prepare for adulthood.

We will work with you, your family, your current provider, and any other professionals involved, to put in place a transition plan to help you settle into and adjust to NETA life. Support will include access to our dedicated Preparing for Adulthood (PfA) offer.

Transition into life at NETA We can arrange taster sessions so you can experience a course session

of your choice and decide if it is right for you. We can also provide support during your initial interview. Transition sessions can be arranged to meet the course tutors, learning support staff and allow you to familiarise yourself with the building.

Specialist equipment We have a range of specialist equipment available for learners including specialist software such as Read and Write Gold. Learners can also be provided with laptops, iPads, dictaphones, magnifiers and specialist keyboards and laptops.

Apprenticeship training If you feel ready to start work, then an apprenticeship could be the right choice for you.

What is an apprenticeship?

As an apprentice you will learn on the job with your employer, gain a qualification through NETA, and earn a wage!

What will I do?

The day-to-day tasks of an apprentice will vary depending on the industry you have chosen and the needs and requirements of the employer. As an apprentice you may be required to attend NETA to complete your off-the-job learning.

Entry Requirements Entry requirements vary depending on the apprenticeship but as a minimum, you must: • Be at least 16 • Be a UK resident • Be employed to complete an apprenticeship • If you are aged 16-18 and haven’t already achieved grade 9-4 at GCSE level, you will need to study functional skills in English and maths alongside the apprenticeship.

• If you are aged 19+ and haven’t already achieved grade 9-4 at GCSE level, it will be at your employer’s discretion if you study English and maths.

How will I be assessed?

Throughout your apprenticeship you will be visited in the workplace by your assessor,

who is assigned to you to support you through your apprenticeship and provide any advice you may need. At the end of your apprenticeship, you will be required to complete an end point assessment (EPA), which varies depending on the apprenticeship, but may include: • A professional discussion with an external assessor • An observation of practice in the workplace • An apprenticeship showcase, which is similar to a portfolio

Finding an employer At NETA we work with more than 500 businesses, to ensure we know what employers are looking for in their new recruits. As part of our application, testing and interview process, we can help match you with employers who are looking for an apprentice. This will meet the requirement of the external awarding organisation, the company and the relevant apprenticeship standard.

Alternatively, you may find a sponsor company who is willing to take you through your apprenticeship. Once you have found a company, we will develop a detailed training plan which will be in line with both the company’s and the external awarding body’s requirements and in line with the apprenticeship standard.

Apprenticeships pay off for NETA duo Permanent roles have now been secured for PD Ports’ apprentices Ewan and Josh.

It comes as a welcome relief for the pair after three and half years juggling the demands of work and their studies.

Picking up completion certificates from NETA director Sean Johnston, Ewan said: “It feels pretty good.”

He started his electrical studies with a one-year course at NETA, before going on to secure the Level 3 Maintenance

Operations Engineering Technician electrical route apprenticeship.

Now officially an electrical tradesperson with PD, it means more responsibility for the 22-year-old from Thornaby.

Of working for a company the size and scale of PD Ports, he said: “They are spot on and, if you need it, there’s always someone to help you out.”

Josh, 20, agrees. He said support from both NETA and PD Ports in the same level 3 apprenticeship helped him to achieve.

Their dedication, hard work, and commitment have been truly inspiring, and it’s fantastic to see Ewan and Josh transition from apprentices to fully qualified tradespeople.

straight from school, the former Ian Ramsey CE Academy student initially missed out on a spot.

Opting for a year of study at NETA clearly gave him what he needed to bag a space second time round.

Now moving into a full-time electrical tradesperson role, the 20-year-old from Norton, said: “It has been a lot of work, but it has paid off.”

PD Ports' group engineering director Andy Eaton said: “I take immense pride in our Port Maintenance Engineering Apprenticeship Programme and the talented individuals who have now successfully completed their four-year journey.

T Levels T Levels are a two-year course equivalent to three A levels. They are a level 3 technical option that combines classroom-based learning with a strong element of on-the-job training through a 45day industry placement.

ENGINEERING MAINTENANCE: Electrical and Electronic specialism Length: 2 years The T Level qualification in Maintenance, Installation and Repair for Engineering & Manufacturing Technologies in an Electrical and Electronic specialism, is a two year full-time course which has been designed in partnership with employers that is aimed to give you the technical knowledge and skills to support you to move into a career in engineering. Each T Level qualification also has a requirement for at least 45 days work placement in the relevant industrial sector with an employer-set project.

What will I do?

In your first year you will cover topics around both the mechanical and electrical specialisms but in your second year you will choose which field you wish to progress into. The electrical specialism will teach you key industry skills including robotics, programmable logic control, as well as the principles of electrical engineering.

Double victory for NETA welders Two of NETA’s dedicated welding students, Cameron and Niamh, represented NETA at the InterCollege Fabrication and Welding Competition at Derwentside College in County Durham.

Competing alongside 14 other students from across the region, they faced a rigorous health and safety quiz followed by hands-on welding tasks judged to national standards. Cameron, currently on a one-year welding course, and Niamh, completing her level 3 course, both placed in the top six—a proud accomplishment that highlights their growing skills.

They credited their success to the constant support and guidance of their tutors, and both found the experience not only challenging but rewarding and a confidence-boost.

Their accomplishments didn’t stop there.

Cameron and Niamh were also nominated for recognition at the The Welding Institute’s Teesside Branch Awards. Niamh won the title of Best Welding Student of 2025, while Cameron earned runner-up for Best Practical Welding Student. Niamh, expressed deep gratitude for the support from her tutors, naming several who helped her transition smoothly despite initially feeling nervous as an out-of-area student. Both students now look ahead to promising careers in welding, proud of how far they’ve come and the solid foundation NETA has helped them build.
