SPRING INTO TAMARAC: EVENTS, CELEBRATIONS AND COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

As we step into April, May and June, South Florida has already reminded us that even our Sunshine State can surprise us. This year brought an unexpected cold blast and recordlow temperatures across the region. Now, as the chill fades and the days grow longer, spring has offi cially arrived in Tamarac.

With spring comes renewal, warmer breezes, blooming landscapes, and yes, pollen season. It is a time to refresh our routines, reconnect with neighbors and enjoy the outdoors while the weather is still beautiful before the summer heat settles in.

Our City has an exciting lineup of spring events designed to bring the community together. Join us for Movies in the Park, where families can relax under the stars and enjoy blockbuster favorites. Dive into fun at our pool events, perfect for cooling off and welcoming the season. Experience music and vibes while the weather is just right and take part in community celebrations that highlight the energy and diversity that make Tamarac special. Spring break offers another opportunity to enjoy everything our City has to offer. Spend the day exploring our parks, visiting local restaurants or simply enjoying time outdoors with family and friends. Tamarac provides the perfect stay-close escape without having to travel far.

As we move through the season, we also celebrate meaningful moments. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day give us the opportunity to honor the parents and caregivers who shape our lives. In June, we recognize Juneteenth, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and reflecting on the continued journey toward equality and unity. June also marks Caribbean American Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the rich culture, cuisine, music and traditions that influence and enrich our community every day.

While we enjoy these beautiful months, we are also mindful that hurricane season begins on June 1. Our City is always prepared. Tamarac remains proactive and vigilant to ensure our residents are protected. We encourage everyone to review their hurricane plans early and stay informed throughout the season.

April, May and June bring celebration, reflection and connection. Be sure to follow us on social media and visit our website to stay updated on all upcoming events and important seasonal information. We look forward to seeing you out and about in Tamarac this spring!

Vice Mayor Marlon Bolton, District 1

eighbors and Friends,

As the seasons change and spring begins to bloom, many in our community are preparing to celebrate Easter and Passover. I would like to extend my warmest wishes to you and your families for a joyous and blessed season. May this special time be filled with peace, hope, renewal, and reflection. Both holidays remind us of the strength of faith, the importance of family traditions, and the promise of new beginnings.

I am also excited to invite you to the Tamarac Wine & Food Festival, one of the most anticipated celebrations in our city. This vibrant event, happening on Friday, April 17th at 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Tamarac Village Amphitheater, brings together incredible flavors, fine wines, and great music for an unforgettable evening of community and culture. Guests will enjoy tastings from talented chefs and local culinary partners, refreshing beverages, and a lively atmosphere that showcases the very best of Tamarac.

During the festival, we will also take a moment to honor the brave men and women of our Police and Fire Departments. These heroes work tirelessly to keep our community safe, often putting themselves in harm’s way to protect our families and neighborhoods. Recognizing their dedication and sacrifice in front of the community they serve is a meaningful part of the evening.

Adding even more excitement to the festival is a special performance by internationally recognized dancehall artist Busy Signal. Known for his energetic performances and global hits, Busy Signal has built a reputation as one of the most influential voices in Caribbean music. Fans know him for chart-topping songs such as “Watch Out For This (Bumaye),” “Stay So,” “Come Over,” and “One More Night.” His music blends dancehall, reggae, and AfroCaribbean rhythms, bringing a powerful energy that will make this year’s festival truly unforgettable.

Looking ahead to May, our city will proudly celebrate Haitian Flag Day, an important moment for the Haitian community and for all of us who value cultural pride and unity. Haitian Flag Day represents resilience, history, and the enduring spirit of a people whose contributions continue to enrich our city and our nation. It is also a reminder of the importance of standing in solidarity and celebrating the diversity that makes Tamarac strong.

As someone who has long championed the Haitian community, I am deeply honored that my work in Tamarac has strong and meaningful roots. Over the years, I have proudly supported milestones that reflect the growth and leadership of our Haitian neighbors — including supporting the first Haitian-American man and the first HaitianAmerican woman elected in Tamarac, as well as the first Haitian attorney in our city. Most recently, it was my great privilege to present the Key to the City to internationally celebrated Haitian artist Rutshelle Guillaume, recognizing her cultural impact and inspiring voice.

Our city thrives because of the people who call it home — people from different backgrounds, cultures, and traditions who come together to build something special. Thank you for your continued support, engagement, and commitment to making Tamarac a welcoming and vibrant community for all. Wishing you and your loved ones peace, happiness, and many blessings in the weeks ahead I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events and continuing to celebrate the incredible spirit of our community together.

With gratitude and warm regards

Westwood / Lime Bay

Improving Roads, Drainage, and Sidewalks in District 2

The City of Tamarac is moving forward with the Westwood Blvd East Drainage Improvement Project, a major roadway rehabilitation effort along Westwood Boulevard East from NW 94th Avenue to West McNab Road.

This corridor was identified in the 2022 Citywide Pavement Management Survey as a failing roadway. Poor drainage has allowed groundwater to weaken the base layer, causing asphalt separation, reduced ride quality, and safety concerns. To address these issues, the City has approved this project to strengthen infrastructure resilience, improve roadway safety, and enhance overall transportation conditions for District 2 residents.

WHAT THE PROJECT INCLUDES

Full Depth Reclamation (FDR):

Curb adjustments, driveway tie-ins, speed humps, and updated pavement markings to improve traffic flow and pedestrian visibility.

Timeline

Construction Start: Mid-January 2026

• Estimated Completion: Mid-August 2026

Construction Impacts

Residents may experience temporary lane or sidewalk closures and minor detours during construction. Driveway access will be maintained, and advance notice will be provided prior to any disruptions.

This project represents a long-term investment in stronger infrastructure, improved drainage, enhanced pedestrian accessibility, and safer travel for the Westwood and Lime Bay communities.

• Rebuilding the roadway foundation by recycling and strengthening existing materials to create a longer-lasting surface.

Drainage Upgrades:

• Improvements to pipes, structures, catch basins, and swales to reduce standing water and prevent future pavement damage.

ADA Sidewalk Improvements:

• New accessible ramps and targeted sidewalk replacements to improve walkability and safety — especially important for the Lime Bay community, a senior residential area. These enhancements will provide smoother walking surfaces, safer crossings, improved accessibility for wheelchairs and walkers, and better connectivity for residents who rely on daily walks for exercise and independence.

Road Safety Improvements:

Commission Editorial Commissioner Krystal Patterson, District 3

As we spring forward, let’s take a look back at what has been accomplished in District 3. The past few months brought meaningful progress, strong community engagement, and important milestones that continue to strengthen our community.

Infrastructure Progress

• Buffer Wall Project Underway: Construction has officially begun on the installation of a beautiful buffer wall along 81st Street and Pine Island Road. This improvement is sure to increase property value, enhance community aesthetics while improving overall quality of life.

connect residents with the resources necessary to turn homeownership into a reality.

Celebrating Community Leaders & History

• BLACK HISTORY MONTH (February)

• Have you noticed the small yet impactful improvements in District 3? Through a series of District Bus Tours and resident feedback, I’ve worked with the city team in enhancing our code enforcement. We have successfully gained compliance with updates to a few shopping plazas to include paint, pressure wash and lighting, new signage and more. Additionally, I am actively working on getting the first art sculpture in District 3! Stay tuned for continued improvements!

Community Empowerment

In January, I had the honor of hosting a First-Time Homebuyer Workshop in partnership with several trusted local businesses. The session provided comprehensive guidance on credit readiness, down payment assistance programs, and mortgage education, equipping attendees with the tools needed to confidently navigate the homebuying process. More than 85 prospective homebuyers and community vendors gathered at the Tamarac Community Center for this impactful event, which was thoughtfully designed to inform, empower, and

We proudly honored Ms. Cheryl Holt, President of the Kings Point African American Club for her decades of dedication to education, cultural preservation, and community service.

• WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH (March):

We recognized Ms. Sharon Jacobs, President of the Kings Point SLED Club, for her dedicated leadership, years of service to the Granville community, professional expertise in management and fiscal oversight, and her unwavering commitment to strengthening and enriching our community.

Health & Connection

• K.I.N.D. Initiative – Ride for Miles (Community Bike Ride):

- Held every third Saturday through June at 8:00 a.m. at the Tamarac Sports Complex.

- Residents of all ages gather to ride 5 miles and connect.

- Participation continues to grow, reinforcing wellness, unity, and neighborly engagement. To stay connected year-round, I encourage you to register for my monthly newsletter and connect with me on your preferred social media platform. Together, we will continue building a District 3 defined by unity, compassion, and meaningful progress.

Commission Editorial Commissioner Kicia Daniel, District 4

As spring arrives, it brings with it a renewed sense of energy, growth, and opportunity throughout our community. This season reminds us that when we come together to support one another, we create meaningful connections that help Tamarac continue to thrive

Earlier this spring, we celebrated an incredible weekend at the 3rd Annual Women of Impact - Sneaker Ball Gala Weekend . The festivities began with a Mix & Mingle networking event, followed by engaging mini workshops designed to help entrepreneurs and aspiring business owners grow and organize their businesses. Participants also gained valuable insight into the evolving world of A.I. marketing and how technology can support business success. The weekend concluded with the Sneaker Ball Gala, a vibrant celebration honoring remarkable women in our community whose leadership, service, and dedication continue to inspire us all.

Looking ahead, we have several exciting opportunities for residents to connect and grow. My upcoming Youth Symposium will welcome young people ages 8–18 for a day of informative workshops, engaging speakers, and discussions designed to empower and inspire the next generation of leaders. In July, I will host my annual

Senior Citizens Expo, a valuable event focused on health, wellness, and resources for our senior community.

I am also continuing to host Chew & Chat popups, which provide residents with an informal space to connect with me and city staff. These gatherings allow residents to share concerns, discuss issues that matter most to them, and work together toward solutions that strengthen our community.

Please know that I am here to support you. Together, we create an atmosphere of listening, collaboration, and growth. I look forward to seeing you at one of the many events happening throughout Tamarac this spring.

Yours in Service, Dr. Kicia Daniel Commissioner, District 4

ARE YOU READY FOR THE 2026 HURRICANE SEASON?

The 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season offi cially begins on June 1. Here are a few tips to help you safely weather a storm.

EVALUATE YOUR RISK

• Tamarac isn’t in a mandatory evacuation zone; however, parts of the City are in fl ood zones. Review the 2026 Flood Brochure that’s included in this edition of Tam-A-Gram to determine whether your property is in a fl ood zone. Through the guide, you will also learn about fl ood hazards and insurance. Additional fl ood information is available at Tamarac.gov/420.

• Consider the special needs of all household members. Don’t forget your pets!

• Review insurance policies before the start of the hurricane season to ensure you understand your coverage. Insurance providers prohibit individuals from purchasing new homeowners’ insurance policies or raising the coverage limits on existing policies when a natural disaster is approaching.

• For additional details about storm preparation, visit Tamarac.gov/EmergencyManagement

BE AWARE

• Monitor local news and weather announcements, especially once storm watches and warnings are declared.

• Visit Tamarac.gov/CodeRED to sign up for free CodeRED emergency notifications.

• For City emails, click the “Stay Connected” button on the homepage to subscribe to the “City-At-Large” and “District” lists.

• Watch for regular hurricane updates on the City’s website and social media.

YOUR SAFETY STARTS WITH STAYING CONNECTED

Attention Tamarac Residents:

The City of Tamarac and your Emergency Management Team remain committed to keeping you informed and protected. Many of you have signed up over the years for CodeRED, the free alert system that notifies residents of emergencies affecting our city, Broward County or the State of Florida.

Recently, the CodeRED system provider was acquired by Crisis24, a well established and reputable leader in emergency communications. As part of this transition, it is important that we ensure all resident information in the system is accurate and up to date.

We are asking you to take just a few minutes to use the link or QR code provided to create a new user profile. Your time is valuable, and we appreciate your willingness to help us keep you informed when it matters most.

2026 STATE OF THE CITY ADDRESS

Join Mayor Michelle J. Gomez at City Hall on Tuesday, April 7, at 7 p.m. for the 2026 State of the City Address, an inspiring presentation of Tamarac’s vision for the future.

LIGHTNING SAFETY

As Florida enters the rainy season, lightning safety should be top of mind for all residents. There are no safe outdoor places during a thunderstorm, so seeking shelter immediately is essential. Thunder can sound even when a strike is miles away, and fastmoving storms often develop with little warning. While the chance of being struck in any given year is about one in a million, the lifetime risk rises to 1 in 15,000. Outdoor workers and those living in stormprone areas like Florida face even higher risk during the spring and summer months

Why Your Participation Matters

Effective communication is one of the most essential tools the City uses to keep you our residents safe and informed. By maintaining accurate contact information, you ensure that you receive timely alerts such as:

• Boilwater notices affecting your neighborhood

• Shelter-in-place or evacuation instructions

• Other critical updates from City officials

These notifications help you plan, respond and stay aware during emergencies.

Thank You

We appreciate your cooperation and your commitment to staying informed. Together, we can ensure every Tamarac resident receives the information they need, exactly when they need it most.

Scan the QR code for more information!

Before heading outdoors, check the weather forecast and enable alerts on your preferred weather app. At the first sound of thunder, go indoors and pause outdoor activities for at least 30 minutes after the last rumble.

After the storm, residents should report downed trees to Tamarac Public Services at (954) 597-3700 and downed power lines to FPL at (954) 797-5000.

Taking a few simple precautions can prevent injuries and save lives.

TAMARAC STUDENTS EMBRACE ARBOR DAY

In celebration of Florida’s Arbor Day, the City of Tamarac’s Public Services Department visited Tamarac Elementary to highlight the important role trees and plants play in supporting and protecting the environment. Students enjoyed an interactive presentation where they were able to ask questions, as well as learn about various native plants. Held in the gymnasium, the seminar emphasized how trees contribute to cleaner air, cooler neighborhoods and healthy ecosystems.

As a hands-on takeaway, each student received a South Florida slash pine to plant at home, allowing them to apply what they learned and practice environmental stewardship beyond the classroom. The visit was designed to encourage today’s youth to appreciate nature, understand the importance of conservation and take small, but meaningful actions to care for their local environment.

GREEN SCENE: EASY WAYS TO BE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY

Spring is the perfect season to refresh routines and make greener choices that last all year. As days get longer and temperatures rise, small changes at home and on the go can add up to a meaningful environmental impact. Going green does not require a full lifestyle overhaul. It starts with simple, practical steps that fit easily into everyday life. Here are easy ways to be more eco-friendly this spring and summer.

• Switch to reusable items like water bottles, shopping bags and food containers to cut down on single-use plastics.

• Shop local farmers markets to support nearby growers and reduce the carbon footprint tied to long-distance food transport.

• Plant native flowers or herbs that require less water and attract pollinators like bees and butterflies.

• Walk, bike or carpool when possible to lower fuel use and emissions.

• Recycle properly by rinsing containers and checking guidelines to avoid contamination.

Small habits, repeated daily, can help protect the planet while creating a healthier, more sustainable community for everyone.

FREEDOM ON THE BLOCK: TAMARAC’S JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION

The City of Tamarac will host its Juneteenth Community & Culture Block Party from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, June 19, at Tamarac Village, 9090 NW 57th St. This event honors Juneteenth, the historic commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, while celebrating Black culture, creativity and legacy.

Tamarac was among the first cities in Broward County to commemorate Juneteenth by establishing it as a City holiday for employees and creating an annual community celebration.

Residents and visitors are invited to enjoy an evening of live music and entertainment, cultural and heritage performances, food trucks, a marketplace featuring Black-owned businesses, community organizations, special appearances and interactive experiences. Join the block party and celebrate with us.

WALK, BIKE & E-BIKE SAFETY TIPS FROM BSO

Stay Safe. Stay Seen.

Whether walking, pedaling for fun, fitness or your daily commute, following these important safety rules protects you and everyone around you.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE

• Check your equipment. Tires inflated, brakes working, chain secure.

• Wear a helmet! It’s your best protection against head injuries.

• Secure loose clothing. Avoid anything that could catch in your chain or wheels.

• Charge responsibly (for e-bikes). Use only the manufacturer’s charger and never leave batteries charging overnight.

FOLLOW THE RULES OF THE ROAD

• Cross at marked crosswalks or intersections.

• Ride with traffic, not against it.

• Obey traffic signs and signals. Bicycles and e-bikes must follow the same laws as cars.

• Use hand signals to communicate. Let others know your next move.

• Stay alert. Avoid distractions, such as texting or wearing headphones, while crossing streets. Watch for parked cars, pedestrians and other road hazards.

• Carry identification and emergency contact information with you.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

SBE VISIBLE. BE SAFE.

• Use lights. White light in front, red light in back; required by law at night.

• Wear bright or reflective clothing, or carry a flashlight, especially at dawn, dusk or nighttime.

• Make eye contact. Ensure drivers see you before crossing or turning.

• Hold hands with young children near traffic.

• Stop, look and listen before crossing.

RIDE SMART ON E-BIKES

• Know your e-bike’s speed class and follow Local regulations.

• Wear an appropriate helmet rated for your e-bike. These helmets differ from standard bicycle helmets and provide enhanced protection for higher speeds.

• Start slow. E-bikes accelerate quickly. Practice smooth starts and stops.

• Respect bike lanes and paths. Be courteous to slower riders and pedestrians.

• Never modify your e-bike’s motor or speed Limiter.

hirley Moore brought her Quilting Class to the Tamarac Senior Program more than two years ago, sharing both her talent and passion with the community. Her grandmother taught her how to quilt at a very young age, and she has been quilting consistently since 2007

After retiring as a senior accountant with Potomac Electric in Washington, D.C., Shirley fulfilled a longtime dream of teaching others the craft she loves. Through her leadership, participants not only learn valuable quilting skills, but also give back in meaningful ways. Shirley and her group generously provide supplies so they can create quilts for the Quilt Guild’s Quilting for the Pines project in Pembroke Pines.

Her dedication, generosity and commitment to service have made a lasting impact on our senior community.

CHEF WILL’S RECIPE FOR SOULFUL COOKING

At The View at Colony West, the scenery may catch your eye, but it’s the food that keeps people coming back. Behind the menu is Executive Chef William Krakehl, known around the kitchen simply as Chef Will, who brings a thoughtful approach to every dish .

“I try to elevate the food here to food that feeds the soul,” he said.

Chef Will’s philosophy is rooted in what he calls the “three C’s of life,” a mindset centered on clean, conscious cooking. For him, that means thinking carefully about the ingredients he uses and the people who enjoy the food.

“I think about the people who are coming here on a daily basis,” he says. “Health and wellness meet country club.”

That approach has led to thoughtful changes in the kitchen, including switching to grass-fed, grassfinished beef, a leaner option that reflects his focus on quality ingredients. One of the restaurant’s standout dishes is the smash burger, made with two three-and-a-half-ounce grass-fed patties topped with caramelized onions, cheddar cheese and the restaurant’s house-made View sauce. Seafood lovers can find plenty to enjoy as well. The yellowtail snapper fish tacos, made with local catch, are served on flour tortillas and topped with house-made slaw and pineapple relish. The dish is finished with chips and a little pico on the side. And when it comes to dessert, Chef Will has a clear favorite.

“One of our favorite desserts here is our apple crisp,” he says. Made with Honeycrisp apples, the dessert is topped with ice cream and finished with house-made caramel. For Chef Will, the goal is simple: good food made with care for the people enjoying it. You can find Chef Will and his menu at The View at Colony West, 6800 NW 88th Ave. in Tamarac.

HELPFUL WATER SAFETY TIPS

Many Floridians cool off during hot summer days at the pool, but safety must always come first. Tragedy can happen in seconds when precautions are overlooked

Florida leads the nation in drowning deaths among children ages 1 to 4, according to the Florida Department of Health. Nationwide, drowning is the leading cause of death for children in this age group.

With Florida surrounded by water and many homes having backyard pools, teaching children to swim is essential. The City of Tamarac’s Caporella Aquatic Center offers swim lessons and vital water safety programs. Visit CaporellaAquaticCenter.com to learn more and take action today.

• Never leave a child unattended in or near water, even for a moment. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports it takes as little as 20 seconds for a child to drown, about the time it takes to read and reply to a text message.

• Eliminate distractions, including phones and tablets, and actively watch anyone in the pool. Drowning happens quickly and is often silent.

• Install fences and alarms around pools or lakes. These measures can save lives.

• Learn CPR and first aid by visiting Tamarac.gov/CPR to register for training.

• In an emergency, always call 911.
