A SEASON TO CELEBRATE TAMARAC
A
s we welcome the October–December issue of the Tamagram, we enter a season filled with meaningful celebrations, cherished traditions and opportunities to come together as a community. After months of extreme summer heat, we can finally look forward to cooler temperatures and a little relief. It’s the perfect time to get outside, enjoy our parks and take part in all that Tamarac has to offer. This fall, Tamarac celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month, bringing our community together to honor the rich cultures, traditions and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. Thank you to everyone who helped make the celebration a memorable one!
As we continue our year-long celebration of America’s 250th Anniversary, we are proud to share Stories of Service, a special video series honoring the men and women who have served our country. Through personal stories and reflections, we are recognizing their dedication and sacrifice while celebrating the many ways they have contributed to our nation. We also invite you to join us for our Veterans’ Day Ceremony on Wednesday, November 11, at 10:30 a.m. at Veterans’ Park as we come together to honor those who have served for our freedom.
Fall also brings plenty of family fun! Halloween Hoopla gives families a chance to dress up in their most ghoulish Halloween costumes and enjoy a spooky evening together. The 46th Annual Turkey Trot 5K continues a beloved Tamarac tradition, bringing residents together for a fun and healthy way to celebrate Thanksgiving. As hurricane season comes to an end on November 30, take a moment to review your emergency plans and restock any supplies. Preparedness is important year-round. The holiday season brings another opportunity to spend time with loved ones and enjoy our community. With schools closed for winter break, Tamarac’s parks remain open and ready for residents to enjoy. Whether you’re getting active, enjoying the outdoors or making memories with family and friends, there are plenty of ways to make the most of the season. Thank you for being an active and engaged part of our Tamarac community. We hope you enjoy everything this season has to offer. Wishing you and your loved ones a safe, joyful holiday season and a very happy New Year!

ear Neighbors,
While I am not trying to rush time that already flies as I can’t believe we are in the 4th quarter of 2026, I must say I’m looking forward to the future! Thank you for the honor of representing you and our wonderful City as your Mayor for the next four years! I appreciate the trust and confidence you continue to place in me!
Now back to 2026. In August, the City of Tamarac won its fourth award in four years from the Florida League of Mayors! This year it was for the Municipal Innovation Awards in the “Technology/Innovation” category for the City’s project – AI Powered Community Calendar and Civic Engagement Platform. Since the inception of the FLM Awards Program, the City of Tamarac has been the only City to be an award recipient 4 years in a row! We received this honor in 2023 for the Tamarac Pet Pantry, in 2024 for the Shine Tamarac Campaign, and in 2025 for Tamarac’s Omni-Channel Call Center Solution. Kudos to Team Tamarac! The calendar is loaded with many terrific events over the next few months. Please check the City’s special events webpage for what we have planned, including: Another successful Ha-Ha’s for the Tatas Comedy Show presented by PuroClean raising money for Tamarac Employees Benevolent Fund, Gilda’s Club of South Florida, and American Cancer Society! And I’m excited to share that Ha-Ha’s for the Tatas, Inc. is now a Florida Non-Profit with its 501(c) (3) pending! Again, we will enjoy using the entire Colony West Clubhouse starting at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, October 10th. Tickets are available online at Tamarac.me/TaTas2026 without credit card surcharges. ello Tamarac Residents,
I am grateful for the opportunity to reflect on the many ways we have come together as a community over the past several months. As your Commissioner, I remain committed to creating meaningful opportunities for residents to connect, access resources, and feel supported in the community they call home. Throughout the summer, I was proud to host and support initiatives that brought residents together and created opportunities for learning, wellness, creativity, and community engagement.
held every Thursday from 6:30 PM–7:30 PM at the Tamarac Community Center. These classes provide a fun and welcoming environment for residents to stay active, socialize, and enjoy time together. I am grateful to the residents, local businesses, organizations, volunteers, and community partners who continue to help make these initiatives possible. Their support allows us to create programs and experiences that bring residents together and make a positive impact throughout District 4.
With the support of Farm Share, our Community Food Drives helped provide much-needed support to local families. Our Senior Expo connected residents with important resources, community organizations, and services focused on health, safety, and overall well-being.
I invite you to join us for our upcoming Community Food Drive on October 2 at 9:00 AM at Waters Edge Park. I will also be sponsoring the Blu Nose People and Pups Concert on October 16 at 5:00 PM at the Tamarac Recreation Center. This familyfriendly event will be an opportunity for residents to enjoy great entertainment. I hope to see you there!
Supporting the next generation was also a priority. Through our Back-to-School Haircuts and Hairdos Voucher Initiative, local students received assistance to help them start the school year with confidence. Our Teen Summer Fashion Class provided young residents with an opportunity to explore creativity, personal style, and self-expression.
As we enter the final months of the year, I encourage you to stay connected and take advantage of the programs, events, and resources available throughout our community. I also invite you to subscribe to my newsletter for updates on upcoming initiatives, community events, and resources for District 4 residents.
We also continue to bring residents together through Get in Step with Kicia Line Dance classes,
Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve you and for your continued support. It is an honor to serve District 4, and I look forward to continuing our work together to build a stronger, more connected Tamarac. URTBRIDGE FOUNDATION LAUNCHES NEW LITERACY PROGRAM IN BROWARD COUNTY
A
new Broward County nonprofit is working to improve early childhood literacy by providing free books each month to children from birth through age 5.
arrive to school lacking basic social and readiness skills.” Webster said. Those concerns inspired him to create a program that encourages families to spend more time reading together.
The URTBRIDGE Foundation Inc. (You Are The Bridge Foundation), an accredited 501(c)(3) organization, launched on January 1, 2026, with a mission to help children develop a love of reading and enter school better prepared to succeed. Books are mailed directly to participating children, creating excitement around reading while encouraging interaction between children and their parents or caregivers.
To provide high-quality books free to families, the Foundation partnered with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a nationally recognized literacy program founded by the late Dolly Parton that has distributed more than 330 million books across five countries. The Foundation is initially focusing on Tamarac, where eligible children in the City’s five ZIP codes can enroll. Webster said discussions are already underway with other Broward municipalities interested in bringing the program to their communities. Expansion, however, will depend on funding. “The only barrier to reaching more children throughout Broward County is financial support,” Webster said. “We are seeking individuals, businesses, and community partners who want to invest in children’s futures.”
Founder and CEO Stewart Webster, a psychologist and former Broward County substitute teacher, said the program was inspired by both his professional experience and family background in education. “Education has always been part of my family’s legacy,” he said. “My grandmother taught for more than 20 years at a prestigious boys’ high school in Jamaica, and my mother supervised more than 50 infant schools there. As someone who has spent years working with children, I am deeply concerned when I see how much time young children spend on screens and how many

FALL BACK SAFELY: CHECK ALARMS AND PREVENT COOKING FIRES
A
s the year comes to a close, we’d like to remind everyone that daylight saving time ends Sunday, November 1. Most digital devices will automatically update, but if you have an analog clock or another clock that requires manual adjustment, remember to turn it back one hour. This is also a good time to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and replace them if needed. Test alarms monthly and replace them every 10 years. Homes should have smoke alarms in each bedroom and in the immediate vicinity outside each room. Homes with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages need carbon monoxide alarms. The holiday season is a time for gathering, celebrating and sharing meals, but it also brings an increased risk of cooking-related fires. Tamarac Fire Rescue urges residents to stay alert and take precautions to protect their homes and loved ones during the busiest cooking season of the year. Tamarac Fire Rescue responded to 18 cookingrelated calls in 2025. COOKING FIRE STATISTICS* • Thanksgiving is the single day with the most cooking fires. • Cooking fires are the top cause of home fires,
14
TA M A G R A M
10|11|12|2026
accounting for nearly 50% of residential fires. • Unattended cooking is the leading factor, responsible for more than 40% of cooking firerelated emergencies. • Nearly 70% of cooking fires occur between 5 and 8 p.m. * Source: State Farm Insurance
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HOME COOKING SAFETY • Stay alert. Don’t cook if you’re sleepy or have consumed alcohol. • Always remain in the kitchen when cooking. Use a timer to reduce the chance of burning food. • Keep anything that can catch fire, including oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels and curtains, away from your stovetop. • Never throw water on an oil fire. IF YOU HAVE A COOKING FIRE • Get out, close the door behind you to help contain the fire and call 9-1-1. • Keep a lid nearby to smother small grease fires. Slide the lid over the pan, turn off the stove and leave the pan covered until completely cooled. • For oven fires, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.

She has participated as a vendor at several Tamarac events, where she has met residents, connected with other local business owners and shared her business with the community. “I love the strong sense of community and how family-oriented the City is,” Christelle said. “The parks are beautiful, the neighborhoods are peaceful and there is a genuine warmth from the people who live here. It truly feels like home.” For Christelle, Tamarac events are an opportunity to step away from the salon and connect with her neighbors. “Being a vendor allows me to step out of the salon and connect face-to-face with my neighbors,” she said. Her involvement is also her way of giving back to the community she calls home. “Because this is my home!” she said. “A community thrives when its residents and local business owners actively participate and uplift one another.” Being involved in Tamarac has also influenced Christelle’s personal and professional growth. The encouragement she has received from residents has given her confidence to continue growing her business and pursuing new opportunities. “I’m not just building a brand, but building a legacy within a community I love,” Christelle said. UNDERSTANDING NEW BUILDING PERMIT EXEMPTIONS: WHAT TAMARAC HOMEOWNERS SHOULD KNOW
A
new Florida law, CS/CS/HB 803, Building Permits and Inspections, brings changes to the building permit process that directly affect the City of Tamarac’s Building Department and local homeowners.
• Projects divided into multiple parts to avoid the $7,500 threshold
Under the new law, certain work on single-family residential properties valued at less than $7,500 may be exempt from the building permit requirement. The exemption applies to eligible work that does not involve electrical, plumbing, structural, mechanical or gas work.
The Building Department Is Here To Help
This can help streamline smaller home improvement projects and reduce some of the paperwork associated with routine repairs and improvements.
Because these changes directly affect how building permits are handled in Tamarac, the City’s Building Department is working to help residents understand the new requirements and determine when a permit or exemption may apply.
Eligible homeowners and contractors may be able to complete certain projects valued at less than $7,500 without obtaining a building permit. However, the exemption does not apply to:
Before starting a project, Tamarac homeowners are encouraged to contact the Building Department to confirm whether a permit is required or whether the project may qualify for an exemption. Taking a few minutes to verify the requirements can help prevent delays and ensure your project complies with applicable regulations.
• Electrical, plumbing, structural, mechanical or gas work • Properties located partially or entirely within a designated flood hazard area
For more information or to determine whether your project requires a permit, contact the City of Tamarac Building Department at (954) 597-3420 or visit Tamarac.gov/building.
What Work May Be Exempt?
16
The law also includes specific requirements for requesting an exemption and documenting the nature and value of the proposed work.
