FIRST GEN FUTURES
Through her experiences and later reflections, Kathleen P. Walker deMarrais ’71 ensures future Warriors have the opportunities needed to succeed
The youngest of four children from a blue-collar family in Collingswood, N.J., Kathleen P. Walker deMarrais ’71 set out as a young woman to find her way in the world. With babysitting and other job money saved, her journey began at East Stroudsburg State College. It was just far enough-and close enough-to home to discover her passion for teaching and to launch a rewarding career in education.
Now a business owner and pastry chef, Walker deMarrais reflects on her time as a student, a fulfilling career, and the desire to help other Warriors who are also first- generation students.

GREETINGS TO OUR ESU WARRIORS!
Welcome to the Fall/Winter 2025 edition of the Alumni Herald, once again presented in combination with the ESU Foundation’s Annual Report. This combined publication blends some of the exciting happening at ESU with impactful stories and vital data while recognizing the generosity of the over 3,000 donors. These contributions exceeded more than $6.7 million in total gifts and pledges and more than $1.2 million in scholarship support for ESU students during the 2024-25 fiscal year.
This edition’s cover story is the perfect example of how an accessible education can create lifelong opportunities. We are incredibly proud of the work done by Dr. Katheleen Walker deMarrais ’71 throughout her career as an educator. And we are grateful that she has chosen ESU to set up a scholarship for first generation college students like herself. It is my sincere hope the students who receive this scholarship have the same success molding future generations as Dr. Walker deMarrais has. Giving highlights this year include the sixth consecutive year that the ESU Foundation has awarded more than $1 million scholarship support to our students. We are approaching the 800-scholarship mark in annual and endowed awards, after adding 26 new scholarships last year. We’re incredibly grateful for the 250+ members of our prestigious President’s Circle, and the 150+ members of the 1893 Society who have committed to remembering the ESU Foundation in their estate plans, after adding 11 new members last year.
Our academic year kicked off with an incredible start with guest speakers, honors and awards, and renovated spaces. The Mattioli Recreation Center opened for the fall semester with updated branding as a space where all Warriors belong. Three-time Olympic gold medalist and two-time World Cup champion, Christie Pearce Rampone, was on campus to talk to student-athletes, we named Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski as our 2025-26 Legislative Fellow, and the Troiani Sweeney Endowed
Lecture Series celebrated its 13th year with a keynote address from Dr. Nathaniel Chin, an associate professor with the University of Wisconsin Department of Medicine and Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology. We honored Darlene Farris-LaBar, professor of and chair of art + media + design, as this year’s Distinguished Professor, and former assistant vice president, Dr. Nancy Weaver ’74, as ESU’s recipient for the Keeper of the Flame Award.
A rainy weekend couldn’t keep alumni away from our annual Homecoming festivities. The Class of 1975 marked its 50th anniversary celebration, and alumni and current and former faculty from our Athletic Training department came out to celebrate the program’s 50th anniversary with its founders. All three athletic programs competing at home, football, men’s soccer, and field hockey, came out on top throughout the weekend. We recognized nine recipients at the Alumni Association Awards ceremony in Rosenkrans Hall. Plans are already on the way for next year’s Homecoming and the 50th reunion for the Class of 1976. We look forward to having you all back on campus.
In athletics, our Warriors won conference championships in women’s cross country and women’s volleyball, both advancing to their respective NCAA Division II championship events, and field hockey made its 10th consecutive NCAA postseason appearance. I invite you to read about all the team and individual accomplishments.
As we embark on 2026, my family and I wish you the best in the new year. Please continue to connect with us through Alumni and Foundation events, support our students by attending theatre productions, art exhibits, athletic competitions, concerts, or any of the many activities occurring on campus. Thank you for your continued support of ESU and our students.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION CORNER
GREETINGS, FELLOW ALUMNI,
Welcome to campus and to a new season at East Stroudsburg University. Students returned for the academic year with the sidewalks coming alive with familiar energy, and I find myself reflecting on gratitude. My time at ESU truly was the “time of my life.” Those years laid the foundation for both my personal growth and professional success. I am equally grateful for the opportunity to serve as President of the ESU Alumni Association Board of Directors. Over the past few years on this board, I have developed friendships that span generations, and I am continually inspired by the Warriors who give their time, talent, and heart to the university they love so deeply.
This semester has been a reminder of how powerful that Warrior spirit can be.
On September 5, 2025, the ESU Alumni Association hosted our Annual Golf FUN-raiser at White Tail Golf Course. Chaired by Vice President Danica Hartenfels ‘97 and board member Britt Carpenter ‘89, the event blended camaraderie and competition in perfect measure. Thanks to our golfers, sponsors, and volunteers, we raised more than $7,000 to support scholarships for ESU students. Mark your calendars now. Next year’s tournament is scheduled for July 31, 2026, and our goal is to register more than 100 golfers. Bring a foursome, sponsor a hole, or volunteer. We would love to have you.
Later in the month, we celebrated one of our favorite fall traditions during Family Weekend, the Legacy Pinning Ceremony. We proudly recognized 12 new Warrior Legacy Families, households where ESU is more than a destination, it is a tradition. Our
keynote speaker, Chris Paradysz ‘83, shared heartfelt reflections on following an older sibling down the very same halls, and on the pride that comes from building new memories in a familiar place. Meeting Warrior families who span decades is a joy and a reminder that ESU’s story is written family by family, class by class.
October brought the event everyone counts down to, Homecoming Weekend 2025. On Friday evening, we honored nine distinguished alumni whose leadership and service exemplify Warrior excellence. On Saturday, we headed to the tailgate and celebrated the very best of Warrior life. Stories, laughter, and the shared refrain that this truly was the “time of your life” filled the day. Despite the threat of rain, the tailgate lot was buzzing, and Delta Phi Epsilon earned the award for Best Tailgate. Many alumni also found a dry and lively home base under the new Alumni Tent, a welcoming space for those without a designated tailgate. Our board staffed a table with T-shirts, cups, and koozies, another fun way to meet alumni and their families and spread a little Warrior pride.
If you joined us for an event this year, thank you. I hope to see you again in 2026. If you could not make it, I hope the year ahead brings you back to campus or to one of our many alumni gatherings across the region. Until then, stay well, stay connected, and stay proud.
Go Warriors!

FIRST GENERATION STUDENTS
THE PATHWAY TO AN EDUCATION CAN BE A ROCKY ONE, BUT KATHLEEN P. WALKER DEMARRAIS ’71 HAS TAKEN THE JOURNEY AND INTENDS TO HELP STUDENTS NAVIGATING THEIR WAY
By Sara Karnish
Dr. Kathleen Walker deMarrais ’71 comes from humble beginnings. Growing up in working-class Collingswood, N.J., her family’s focus was earning a living. While education was valued, there was no discussion or planning for college, given the family’s finances. At that time, job options for women were limited. “A woman could either be a nurse, a secretary, or a teacher. I knew I wouldn’t do well as a nurse. I had no interest in being a secretary, though I did cover myself there and took typing,” she recalls.
Teaching was appealing, but she knew how much work it would take to even get into a school. “I was with a group of friends who’d all gone to college, and I wanted to go, too,” she explains. She worked all through high school—first by picking up baby-sitting jobs, then by working at a dry cleaners’—and she was prepared to continue paying for college. Her parents offered limited support. With five children—of which Walker deMarrais was fourth—there just wasn’t much support to give.
“We were definitely working class—there wasn’t a lot of money,” she recalls. “My parents valued education, but I knew if I wanted to support myself, I had to go to college.” Walker deMarrais applied to five colleges. She chose what was then East Stroudsburg State College (ESSC) because it was just far enough from her parents’ home. “My parents didn’t know I was going to college until I went,” she says with a laugh. “I left home and never went back. I went to East Stroudsburg and was really able to establish a home there.”
ESSC gave Walker deMarrais the tools she needed to build a successful career in education. “It was a really good teaching school—I enjoyed my education classes,” she says, noting she sprinkled enough sociology and anthropology courses into her schedule to “create a little minor for myself.” Education remained her first love, but she was deeply interested in anthropology, as well. She praises the university’s education program and feels she was well prepared for what became a lifelong career. Her undergraduate degree was in elementary education; later, she worked in special education. “It wasn’t called ‘special education’ at that time,” she explains.
“I was given a job in upstate New York and did personalized instruction with the ‘difficult students.’ Legislation passed in 1978 which recognized the need to have people work with special needs kids.” She went on to earn a Master’s degree in special education at Xavier University, Cincinnati. While there, she worked in Newport, Kentucky in a day treatment center for adjudicated youth, which she calls a “really interesting program. Then I moved over to a position in the same district working with learning disabled behavior disorder (LDBD) children.” She befriended another professional who had a degree in social foundations in education and planned to pursue a doctorate. The friend asked Walker deMarrais if she would be interested in going through the program with her. “It combined anthropology, sociology, and education, so I applied because I was fascinated with the subject matter,” she explains.

Preparing to depart, Walker deMarrais in Seattle, Wash., waiting for the ferry to Anchorage, Alaska, for her new position training Indigenous people to become teachers.

With her doctorate completed, Walker deMarrais next went from the U.S. mainland to the rugged Alaskan wilderness to train Indigenous people to become teachers. “In those small villages, certified teachers were white from out of state, while the community members served as paraprofessionals. We prepared those who were already working in the schools as ‘paras’ to become teachers. That’s what attracted me to Alaska.”
She admits she loved the work but didn’t love the harsh living conditions. She moved back to the Lower 48 and lived in both Tennessee and Arizona, where her career shifted away from K-12 schooling to teaching in higher education with specialties in social foundations of education and qualitative research methodologies. She eventually settled in Georgia, where she currently lives. Having worked at every level of education, she wrapped up her career at the University of Georgia, where she started in 1999. “I was called on to be a department head two different times, usually for the departments that were having some issues. I was also an associate dean. While in administration, I continued to teach graduate students in the qualitative research program. In 2022, I’d just finished eight years as department head at age 73, and retired. Across my whole career, I’d been in education in one form or another for 52 years, and felt it was time to retire. Our program was in really good shape, and I thought it was time for something different,” she says.
That “something different” was opening a shop, bakery, and deli in her adopted hometown of Lexington, Ga., called the Rowdy Rooster with her partner, Jamie Lewis.

“We started this shop to try to build up downtown Lexington. We thought it would be a place for people to come together,” she says. A former “barbecue pit” has grown into a true community gathering space, open for lunch and selling baked goods. Retirement has given her the time to set other goals. Travel tops the list. She’s also receiving accolades for her career, most recently the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Educational Studies Association (AESA). “It’s a wonderful honor, to be recognized for my teaching, mentoring, and scholarship over a long career,” she says.
Now retired and planning her next chapter, she reflected on her years in education and how she might make an impact on future generations of ESU students—many first generation, just as she had been. She received the Excellence in Education Distinguished Alumni Award from ESU in 2017, which inspired her to start a scholarship at her alma mater.
“I’m comfortable in retirement, and I wanted to support something I believe in, and that’s first gen college students—those who struggle to get an education. I worked through all of my degrees, and if I can make it better for another student, that’s where my heart is.” She adds, “There are other institutions I can contribute to, but ESU is the one I’ve chosen to give to.” The Dr. Kathleen P. Walker deMarrais ’71 Annual and Endowed scholarships are awarded to students majoring in education with preference given to a first-generation college student.
She said she hopes her award will help ease some of the financial burden and anxiety that comes with paying for college. “I certainly hope the award will help relieve some of the struggle. It’s so expensive to go to college—if the student is working, maybe it will help so they can focus on their schoolwork, finish their degree, and contribute to their field.”

ADVANCING FIRST GEN SUCCESS
GENERATION ONE CLUB A PROVEN RESOURCE FOR ESU STUDENTS
A valuable resource for students who are the first in their families to attend college, East Stroudsburg University’s Generation One Club provides an encouraging and supportive space for first-generation Warriors to learn and grow on their journey to graduation.
A significant portion of the university’s student body, more than 35 percent of students are first-generation as of fall 2024, making a space like the Generation One Club an important tool in promoting their success.
Established in 2022, the club hosts regular fellowship luncheons and other meetups that are focused on tutoring, scholarships, building resumes, where to find resources, how to participate in student events on campus, and additional topics they may need guidance on due to a lack of family experience with college life.
Special events also take place throughout the academic year. In November, the Generation One Club hosts GenOne Week, featuring a slate of daily events designed to bring first-generation students together as well as drawing new members into the club. Events held this past year included the karaokecentered “Music for Commuters,” a hot chocolate and coffee fundraiser, an annual mixer for faculty and staff who were first-generation college students, a game night, and a relaxation and mindfulness-themed “Zen Hour.”
In September during ESU’s Family Weekend, a special ceremony is held that lets first-generation students and their families place a GenOne pin on each other, signifying the shared pride in their accomplishment.
Mentorship also plays a key role in the club. In addition to supporting each other, members volunteer during College Bound ESU – a program that brings local first-generation middle school students to campus for a daylong visit. There, Generation One students share their own challenges and experiences at a time when middle school students may be beginning to consider their own paths to a college degree.
Academic achievements are proudly celebrated as well. In conjunction with the launch of the Generation One Club itself, the university established the Alpha Alpha Alpha (Tri-Alpha) First Generation Honors Society in 2022 to recognize the academic success of ESU first-generation students specifically.
For the club’s dedicated efforts over the years, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) awarded ESU with the First Gen Forward Leader Institution Designation in 2024. The designation gives the university access to diagnostic tools that offer key insights about their institution, plus customized solutions, ready-to-use toolkits, strong data reporting, and expert support along the way.
In 2022, NASPA also recognized ESU as one of 75 higher education institutions nationally to be named to its First-Gen Forward cohort for its demonstrated commitment to advancing first-generation student success.

HOMECOMING WEEKEND 2025
WARRIOR SPIRIT SHINES THROUGH THE RAIN
A little rain couldn’t dampen the Warrior spirit as East Stroudsburg University alumni returned to campus for Homecoming Weekend 2025. Despite the wet weather, alumni showed up with enthusiasm, reconnecting with classmates, celebrating milestones, and proudly representing their alma mater throughout the weekend.
The festivities began Friday with the Remembrance Day Ceremony, where alumni, students, and faculty gathered near the weeping mulberry tree to honor members of the ESU community who passed away during the last academic year. Danica Hartenfels ’97, vice president of the East Stroudsburg University Alumni Association Board of Directors, shared remarks on behalf of the association, reflecting on the enduring impact and legacy of those we remember.

Following the ceremony, the Henry A. Ahnert, Jr. Alumni Center served as a welcoming spot for alumni to gather, reconnect, and prepare for the evening’s events. The Annual Alumni Awards Ceremony took place in Rosenkrans Hall. Nine distinguished alumni were recognized for their lifetime achievements: Terry R. Barry ’89 M’99, Joseph F. Caviston III ’09, Michael V. McCann ’88, Nancy M. Troyano ’01 M’05, Glenn G. Gottshalk ’72, Janna Harris ’00, Shelly Marshall ’05, Jaynellen Behre-Jenkins ‘91, and John R. Brunner ’60 (posthumously). Each honoree reflected on their time at ESU and how it shaped their professional and personal journeys. Read more about this year’s honorees on page 12.
On Saturday, the Class of 1975 marked their 50th Reunion with a gathering in Zimbar-Liljenstein Hall, which became a warm and lively retreat from the weather. Across campus, Warriors embraced the conditions at the annual Tailgate, showing creativity and camaraderie under tents and canopies. The Best Tailgate Award went to Delta Phi Epsilon, whose setup captured the Time of Your Life spirit and impressed the judges. Their recognition is displayed in the Alumni Center lobby.

He went on to earn his Doctorate in Educational Administration from Walden University in 2011. His career began in the East Stroudsburg Area School District, where he taught health and physical education at both the elementary and secondary levels.
In 2000, after completing his master’s degree, Barry joined the Pen Argyl School District as an assistant principal and was named principal the following year, a role he held until 2012. Following the completion of his doctorate, Terry returned to his alma mater to give back to the institution that shaped his career. He was hired as associate dean of the College of Education at ESU in 2012 and was promoted to dean in 2013.

Dear Friends,
In fiscal year 2024–2025, thousands of alumni and friends— together with our corporate and foundation partners—once again demonstrated extraordinary generosity to the East Stroudsburg University Foundation. Loyal supporters contributed gifts and pledges totaling $6,777,442 between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025, a testament to their steadfast commitment to ESU and the success of its students.
Philanthropy continues to evolve, and we recognize the pressures facing donors today. Economic fluctuations, shifting priorities in charitable giving, and rising costs across the higher-education landscape influence the decisions supporters make. That is why we are especially grateful that so many of you continue to view ESU as a worthy investment—one that empowers students, strengthens our region, and contributes to a more knowledgeable and resilient society.
Within the following pages of your Alumni Herald magazine, you will see the thousands of
alumni, friends, businesses, and organizations who stood with the ESU Foundation last year. You will also discover how we work diligently to steward the resources entrusted to us, honor those who support our mission, and ensure that ESU students have access to the opportunities and experiences that elevate their education.
Among the many highlights this past year, we are proud to share the following milestones for fiscal 2024-2025:
$4 million in corporate and foundation support
$1.2 million awarded in scholarships to students
$150,000 grant to update technology in the Speech and Hearing Center
$220,000 grant for tennis court renovations
Warrior Esports Room
Dedication, recognizing donor contributions
Athletics Giving Day, raising $30,000, in one day to support Warrior athletics
While this is just a snapshot of a busy and successful year, we hope it offers a glimpse of the noteworthy work your support helps us achieve. This edition of the Herald also includes a cover story featuring Kathleen P. Walker deMarrais ’71, who was a First-Generation student at ESU, and has taken steps through the creation of student scholarships so that others may have the same opportunities in the years to come. Her story is an inspiration we are honored to share.
Looking ahead, 2025–2026 is especially meaningful as the ESU Foundation celebrates 40 years of support—see our 40-year timeline of success on page 17. We see tremendous possibilities: initiatives to advance, resources to secure, and even more students whose lives can be transformed through your generosity. Your continued support of the ESU Foundation remains one of the most meaningful investments you can make. Together, we are building futures and strengthening a university that truly matters.

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2024–2025
September 2024
Grant
provides clinic technology upgrades
A $150,000 grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Community and Economic Development, enabled ESU to upgrade the university’s Speech and Hearing Center. The funding, which was secured by the work of Rep. Maureen Madden, facilitated the acquisition of a new VALT Video Observation and Recording System and ClinicNote, a cloud-based, HIPAA-compliant electronic medical records platform.
The Speech and Hearing Center, operational for 50 years through ESU’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, provides free services to more than 300 clients annually, including assessments and treatments for communication and swallowing impairments.

Anthony Voto, Class of 2027
Dr. Richard and Mrs. Jean DeSchriver
Track & Field Annual Scholarship
Barry S. Krammes ‘04 Annual Scholarship
Maury Molin ‘76 Men’s Track Annual Scholarship
Peter Nevins ‘84 Endowed Scholarship for Cross-Country, Track & Field
Anthony Voto is a sport management major and member of the Men’s Track & Field Team. He credits his role as a student-athlete as the driving force behind his college journey. “Being a studentathlete is the reason I’m in school,” Anthony shares. “Track has pushed me to become a better athlete, student, and person overall. It’s made my college experience exponentially better and helped me build lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories.”
To Anthony, wearing the Warrior jersey is about more than just athletics—it’s a symbol of pride and purpose. “Wearing ‘ESU’ across my chest is a statement. It’s not just the name of my college—ESU is my family,” he says. “Wearing that singlet means competing to the best of my ability and upholding the values behind the logo.”
Anthony has received several scholarships through the ESU Foundation, including the Maury Molin ’76 Men’s Track Scholarship, the Dr. DeSchriver Track and Field Scholarship, the Barry Krammes Scholarship, the Peter Nevins Scholarship, and the Track GIA Men award. “My scholarship donors have helped me not only financially, which I deeply appreciate, but emotionally as well,” he says. “Knowing I have a support system outside of my team and family means the world.” After having the opportunity to meet donor Maury Molin, Anthony adds, “To all of my donors— thank you for believing in me and going out of your way to support athletes like me. Your generosity doesn’t go unnoticed, and I appreciate it beyond belief.”

Ana Laska, Class of 2027
Thomas S. and Mae S. Brinton Endowed Scholarship
Richard & Claire Hahn Endowed Scholarship
John Parkinson ESU Mathematics Annual Scholarship
Ana Laska’s journey to ESU was unique and full of challenges. Born in Ukraine and having spent her early months in Spain before moving back to Ukraine and then the United States at age seven, Ana’s family navigated the complexities of the American college system together. “My parents didn’t know how the American higher education system worked or what set one college apart from another,” she explains. “I’m thankful for all their support—my dad toured colleges with me, and my mom helped me research to find the best fit financially, distance-wise, and program-wise.”
Ana’s passion for math and desire to make a positive impact on students’ lives led her to pursue math education at ESU. She appreciates the university’s small size, strong education program, and closeness to family. “I get to be independent but can go home whenever I want,” she says. As a first-generation college student and scholarship recipient, Ana feels a deep sense of purpose. “Being first gen means more than earning a degree—it’s about carrying my family’s hopes forward and honoring the sacrifices they made.”
Thanks to her scholarships, Ana has fully embraced campus life, serving as treasurer of the Math Club and participating in the Catholics Club and Writing Studio. “These experiences have helped me make some of my best friends and feel connected to campus.” Looking ahead, she hopes to teach math and maybe pursue a Master’s degree. Reflecting on her growth, Ana shares, “ESU is a very welcoming environment with something for everyone. I’ve learned not to be afraid to talk to people—stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to great experiences.”

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
WINS 1ST PSAC CHAMPIONSHIP,
QUALIFIES FOR NCAA’S FOR 2ND STRAIGHT YEAR; MEN REPEAT AS PSAC RUNNER-UP
The Warriors completed a historic season with their first-ever PSAC championship, finished second at the NCAA Atlantic Regionals for their best finish in that event, and competed at the NCAA Division II Championships for the second consecutive year and third time overall.
ESU and Edinboro tied with 77 points each at the PSAC Championships, with the Warriors prevailing with the tiebreaker when comparing each team’s top-five finishers against each other. Junior Payton Falkenstein was fourth, freshman Sarah Williams sixth and sophomore Riley Trentowski 14th to earn All-PSAC
first team honors, and junior Mia Sisilli and sophomore Kiera Wimbush were 26th and 27th for second team status.
Falkenstein and Williams finished fifth and ninth at the NCAA Regional, leading the runner-up Warriors to their best-ever finish. At the NCAA Championships at Wisconsin-Parkside, ESU was 32nd to match last year’s finish with an average time of 22:53.8. Fifth-year head coach Adam Mengel was named PSAC Coach of the Year.
ESU’s men finished second in the PSAC for the second straight year and fifth in the Atlantic Regional, improving from seventh the previous year and earning its first top-five finish since 2012. Seven Warriors earned All-PSAC honors and 10 finished in the top 50 at the PSAC Championships. Senior Landon Boyle placed 10th, senior Brian McGarrity was 13th and freshman Aiden Voth was 15th to earn first team All-PSAC. Second team runners were sophomore Andrew Tatesure in 18th, junior Ethan Holcomb 22nd, sophomore Joe Walker 25th and junior Bryce Keenoy 27th. Boyle and Tatesure were All-Region with their 24th and 25th-place finishes in the meet.

FIELD HOCKEY MAKES 10TH STRAIGHT NCAA APPEARANCE, SIMON AND KAUFMAN REPEAT AS ALL-AMERICA
ESU field hockey once again contended for both PSAC and national championships, going 16-4 and earned the second seed in the PSAC Tournament and fourth seed in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Warriors were 16-2 in the regular season and have made the NCAA Tournament every season since 2015, winning national titles that year and in 2022.
ESU opened the season with a seven-game winning streak, then finished the regular season with nine consecutive wins, highlighted by a Homecoming
Weekend win over Shippensburg, 3-2. The Raiders entered the game No. 1 in DII and had won both meetings in 2024, but ESU came out on top and generated momentum going down the stretch. ESU fell to Shippensburg, the eventual PSAC and NCAA champions, in the PSAC semifinals. In the NCAA Tournament, the Warriors hosted West Chester in their fifth NCAA Tournament home game in program history, falling 2-0.
Senior Charlotte Simon led four players named All-America, earning first team honors. She was joined on the second team by senior Kerry Kaufman, senior Elaiana Rivera-Lagalla and junior Minke Klijn. Simon and Kaufman are the 20th and 21st Warriors to earn multiple All-America selections. Rivera-Lagalla and Klijn are both set to return for the 2026 season. On the All-PSAC team, Simon and Rivera-Lagalla were first team, Kaufman and Klijn were named second team, and seniors Emma Friend and Bella Viruet were on the third team. ESU’s six selections mark the 11th straight year with at least five All-PSAC honorees.
ESU’s first-ever PSAC champion women’s cross country team.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL WINS 6TH PSAC CHAMPIONSHIP,
ALL-AMERICA ANNA COULTER CAPTURES 3RD PSAC EAST ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
ESU women’s volleyball earned its sixth PSAC championship and first since 2019, and notched its first NCAA Tournament win in program history, as part of a historic 27-6 season that included a 15-match winning streak and 13-1 PSAC East mark.
The Warriors won the PSAC title at Koehler Fieldhouse with a four-set win over Gannon. At the NCAA Atlantic Regional, they swept Charleston (W.V.) in the opening round before falling to IUP, who they beat in the PSAC semifinals, to conclude the year.
Senior middle blocker Anna Coulter rounded out her career with a remarkable season, becoming the first Warrior to earn three consecutive PSAC East Athlete of the Year honors, second to be named first team All-PSAC East in each of her four seasons, joining April Mellott (1999-2002), and was PSAC Tournament MVP. Coulter repeated as a D2CCA All-America first team selection and also garnered third team AVCA All-America honors. She was also the D2CCA Atlantic Region Player of the Year for the second straight year and was a three-time first team All-Region selection. In the record book she ranks third at ESU in kills (1,364), fourth in kills/set (3.22), first in attack percentage (.370), fifth in sets played (424), first in blocks (518), and second in blocks/set (1.22).
Freshman Marta Leeland joined Coulter on the All-PSAC East first team at libero. She led the PSAC in digs (600) and aces (55), and was fifth in the conference in digs per set (4.96). Fifth-year head coach Tricia Melfy was named the AVCA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. She has guided ESU to the PSAC semifinals each season, with NCAA Tournament trips in 2021 and 2025.

The Warriors won the 6th PSAC women’s volleyball championship in school history on Nov. 22, 2025, at Koehler Fieldhouse. Anna Coulter earned three straight PSAC East Athlete of the Year awards and consecutive All-America honors in leading ESU to the 2025 PSAC championship.
ESU CONCLUDES FALL SEASON IN 2ND FOR PSAC’S DIXON TROPHY
Behind two conference championships in women’s cross country and women’s volleyball, ESU ranks second out of 17 programs in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s 2025-26 Dixon Trophy standings through the fall season.
FOOTBALL POSTS 8-3 SEASON LED BY QUINTOIS, BLOSE AND DINGLE
ESU secured its third straight season with at least eight wins for the first time since 2003-05 and had 13 All-PSAC East selections, second-most in the conference, to highlight the 2025 season on the gridiron.
Junior kicker Ty Quintois was named AFCA All-America second team, going 45for-46 on extra points and 8-for-13 on field goals for 69 points, and recording touchbacks on 27 of his 60 kickoffs. A two-time All-PSAC East first team selection, he is the third ESU kicker to earn AFCA All-America, joining Devin Barthlomew (2022) and Jordan Walters (2019), and 10th Warrior overall.
Junior defensive end Ashton Blose and redshirt junior safety Everette Dingle were named to the D2CCA Super Region 1 second team. Blose earned his first All-Region nod after leading the PSAC East with 8.5 sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss, and had 56 tackles, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He joins recent ESU defensive linemen named All-Region in Deshawn McCarthy (2021) and Bryan Thomson (2012, 2014). IN REMEMBRANCE
A Tribute to Dr. Mark Kilker, CRNP, Ed.D. Dean, College of Health Sciences, 2000-2013
The ESU community mourns the loss of nurse, educator, administrator and visionary leader Dr. Mark J. Kilker, 72, of Saylorsburg, Pa., who died on Feb. 15, 2025. Dr. Kilker earned his B.S.N. from Trenton State College, M.S.N. from the University of Pennsylvania (1980) and a Doctorate of Education in Nursing Administration from Teachers College, Columbia University (1994). Before earning his advanced degrees, Mark worked as a registered nurse at Pocono Hospital. In 1981, Dr. Kilker joined the nursing faculty at ESU and throughout this tenure earned the rank of associate professor. He served as the Nursing Department chair for 10 years and in 2000 assumed the role as Dean of the School of Health Sciences.
Dr. Kilker embodied the teaching-scholar. He understood, demonstrated and supported faculty in their varied roles at ESU and with his thoughtful leadership style moved the College of Health Sciences forward during challenging times. He championed academic excellence, supported innovative programs, and worked tirelessly to strengthen the Health Sciences community. Of particular note was his vision and efforts to build partnerships with Health Sciences programs in Puerto Rico and Taiwan. Mark was also responsible for planning and implementing the CHS simulation center and ensuring that the Masters in Public Health degree program was established as a part of the College. Dr. Kilker stood by his personal beliefs that “students are first.” His unwavering efforts with students and faculty to assure fairness, empathy and level-headed decision-making made Dr. Kilker a leader to be revered. Mark’s colleagues and students throughout the years valued his encouragement, kindness and genuine care. The College of Health Sciences is stronger today because of his leadership. His influence will continue to be felt in the lives and careers of all who were touched by his work. We are deeply grateful for Dean Kilker’s leadership and service to ESU and will remember him not only for what he accomplished but also for the way he led - with respect, humility and dedication.
Mark, the beloved husband of his wife Kathleen M. Kilker is also survived by daughters Meghan Mendez, Bridget Rybacki and son Mark Kilker. He was preceded in death by his daughter Colleen in 2002. Mark loved his grandchildren Luke, Julia, Jacob, Avery and Nathan, treasuring their time together.
