This brings me back to the cart situation. Do the right thing, people. Even if no-one is watching you.

In my opinion the measure of a man (or woman) can be taken by observing what they do with a shopping cart.

I don’t mean inside the store, although I will judge you harshly if you allow your child to ram it into my ankles. Nope, I mean outside the store, in the parking lot. Once you get all your chocolate chip muffins, cheese balls and lactose free milk into the car and you have an empty cart, what do you do? Do you leave it where it lands? Do you push it onto a curb so it doesn’t roll away? Do you put it carefully between the parked cars next to you? Or do you take it to the cart stand, ready to be rolled back to the store?

you do?” In this show people are tested in fabricated situations to see their reaction when they think no-one is watching. Many of these situations involve stepping up when people are being harassed or bullied and yes, we should all put a stop to that kind of behavior. My issue with this is that nowadays it can be dangerous to react in the way you would want to. I have told my daughters, in particular, not to intervene if their safety could be at risk. But it should not be that way. People should always do the right thing, even if they don’t get kudos or acknowledgement. People should also not harass or bully others too, let’s be honest here.

This is one place where there are no laws or even rules to guide you. Sure you can leave it where it is, or you can do the right thing, even if no-one is looking. Nobody gets credit for moving their cart, but it shows me that you know how to be a responsible adult, even when there is no pat on the back. Fall Risks

“First talk with your doctor. You may need to have your vision as well as your balance and movement checked. Your prescription medica tions may need to be changed. Many people can reduce their risk of falls by exercising, improving their balance and implementing safety measures at home,” he said.

The NCOA offers five home modifications you can make for fall prevention:

· Have a seat: Place a sturdy chair in your bed room so you can sit while getting dressed.

· Store for success: Keep frequently used items between your waist and shoulder height.

“Aging

Each year about $50 billion is spent on medical costs related to non-fatal fall injuries and $754 million is spent related to fatal falls, accord ing to the CDC.

· Secure some support: Buy a shower seat, grab bar, and adjustable-height handheld shower head to make bathing easier and safer.

The calendar says fall starts in September, but Arizona’s cooler season will wait awhile. One thing that won’t wait are the measures to reduce your risk of injury due to falling hazards. Falls are a leading cause of injury for people age 65 and older, according to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), but they are not an inevitable part of aging. During national Fall Prevention Awareness Week, Sept. 18-24, doctors from Abrazo Health want the public to know there are things you can do around the house to help prevent falls. “If fall injuries aren’t something that you’ve thought about, there is probably someone in your life who’s worried about it,” said Dr. Jason Black, medical director of Emergency Services at Abrazo West Campus. Most falls are caused by a combination of risk factors. The more risk factors a person has, the greater their chances of falling. As we age, our risk of falling and being injured increase. After age 65, your risk of falling is about one in four. These falls may result in bro ken bones or other injuries that lead to declining health, isolation and a loss of independence, said Dr. Black. Falls are also the most common cause of traumatic brain injury. brings many physical changes including slowed reaction times and a decreased sense of

While the risk of falling increases with age, one can take measures to help prevent falls.

· Clear the way: Keep items off the stairs, and fix simple but serious hazards such as clutter and throw rugs.

· Light it up: Replace burnt-out bulbs with bright, non-glare lightbulbs.

The medical healthcare power of attorney identifies an agent, such as a trusted family member or friend, who can give consent to medical treatment if you cannot. If insurance requires transfer to a skilled nursing facility before going home from the hospital, your agent can arrange that for you. Different from other states, the Arizona allows you to authorize your health care agent to follow your instructions for burial or cremation. Otherwise, when there is no surviving spouse, all of the children or other family members may have to be consulted.

Another difference from other states is the mental healthcare power of attorney which helps avoid costly court intervention when there is mental illness, brain injury, dementia or Alzheimer’s. If a person does not have these healthcare powers of attorney, the court must give authority to act. An attorney is needed for the patient and a different attorney for the petitioner. After a court investigation, a hearing is held in open court—in about 45 days after a petition is filed. Time, money and privacy is saved by appointing an agent through healthcare powers of attorney.

Cut heat: When possible, cut down on using heat styling tools or turn the heat down to the lowest effective setting. Explore alternatives that don’t use heat, such as rollers.

Dr. Houshmand shares some ways to help maintain hair health and encourage thicker, fuller, healthier hair: Nourish from the inside: Healthy hair starts from within, so it’s important to look at your diet and eat nourishing foods. Protein is particularly important because it’s a building block for hair.

Go loose: That slick ponytail or braid may look chic, but it can damage your hair if worn on a regular basis. These styles pull at the roots and can cause breakage mid-strand.

Deep condition: Leave conditioner on your hair for longer periods of time so it really nourishes hair. Strive for 3-5 minutes before rinsing. With these few simple steps, you can help your hair be its healthiest yet.

Mind wet hair: Remember, wet hair is weaker and therefore more vulnerable. Switch up your bathing routine by detangling before your shower rather than after to protect strands.

Wash every other day: A dirty scalp can be itchy and irritating, leaving hair dry and brittle. Washing every other day is the ideal frequency for most people to promote hair health.

Hair is an important part of your personal style every day, it can help you look and feel your best. If you’re experiencing thinning hair or hair loss, it’s important to know you’re not alone. “If you’ve noticed your hair doesn’t seem as thick as it used to be or more is falling out than normal, don’t be alarmed. Learning about the causes of hair loss and how you can keep your hair healthy can make a positive impact, no matter your age,” said Dr. Elizabeth Houshmand, board certified dermatologist and Viviscal It’sspokesperson.normaltoshed between 50 and 100 hairs a day, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association. You may temporarily shed more than this for a few months due to stressors such as giving birth, losing a significant amount of weight, or recovering from an illness or operation. Hair loss is different because it occurs when the hair stops growing - this can be caused by things such as medical treatments like chemotherapy, or hereditary hair loss, where you have inherited genes that cause hair loss.

Character education is a crucial part of childhood development.Character education is associated with higher levels of educational outcomes and is also related to higher levels of expressions of love, integrity, compassion and self-discipline. It’s never too early to begin teaching children the value of strong morality and character in order to help them succeed in school. While there are many important traits, experts at Kiddie Academy Educational Child Care have identified five that are crucial to success in a classroom environment and in life. Teaching your child respect, or being able to recognize and appreciate the rights, beliefs, practices and differences of other people, is one of the most beneficial traits to have in school. A great way to model respect is reinforcing good listening and being receptive of others, allowing them to be themselves. Respect builds trust and positive relationships. Giving assistance when someone is in need, or being helpful, is a trait that will allow your child to be a good citizen toward fellow students.

Display concern for your children and help them see how others feel in different situations to build their ability to feel empathetic.

Name your children’s emotions when you see them appear so they can learn to identify when they’re feeling mad or sad and teach them coping skills like taking deep breaths or counting to 10 in those moments.

Honesty is a challenging value to teach to children as they develop. Oftentimes, they can face confusion over facts, can mix up reality with fantasy or be afraid of getting in trouble. Assist your children with distinguishing what’s real from imaginary and reassure them that telling the truth won’t get them in trouble. Self-regulation, is a character trait that helps children excel in a classroom because they can calm down without distracting from others.

Empower your children to help at home by letting them assist with chores like putting away groceries or washing off plastic dishes in the sink. The ability to empathize, or understand and care about how someone else is feeling, is beneficial for children interacting with other children.

Coping with the loss of a loved one can be one of the toughest challenges many of us will face. And when one loses a spouse or a significant other, this grief can be compounded. Although loss is a natural part of life, one may still feel overwhelmed and struggle to deal with these new circumstances.

many possible faces and can express itself in many different ways. Remember, you are your own person with your own life experiences and relationship with the one who died. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You may benefit from talking with a licensed professional counselor who can help you cope, understand and accept your feelings and help you navigate through the grief process. Submitted by Ellie Schwartzberg, vice president of Older Adult and Jewish Community Services at Jewish Family and Children’s Service (JFCS). More information about JFCS programs and services is available at https://www.jfcsaz.org/.

For many years, licensed counselors and other mental health professionals believed that processing grief was a predicable process for people. That once you were through the grieving process, you had reached closure and could move on. Experts now understand that each person processes grief differently and coping with grief does not follow a particular pattern. As a licensed professional counselor, I work with individuals experiencing loss. What follows are some strategies that I have found helpful when coping with the loss of a loved one: Talk about the death of your loved one with friends and other members of the family. Let others know it is ok to talk to you about it. Accept your feelings. People will experience all kinds of emotions after the death of a loved one and all are normal. Take care of yourself. Eat well, exercise and get plenty of rest.

Estrella Publishing - White Tanks View magazine September 2022 11

For most, the sadness will diminish over time, but taking the time to grieve is an essential part of the process. We are naturally resilient, and most of us can cope with a loss and can, over time, move on with our lives. But everyone reacts differently to death. Research shows that most people recover from loss on their own with time, especially if they have a strong support system. It is important to remember that there is no “normal” amount of time for someone to grieve.

A cultural shift in 2022 has led to more multigenerational living across the United States and it is now becoming increasingly common. According to a recent Bosch survey, nearly a quarter of Americans live with relatives. With more people under one roof, how can families create lasting family bonds at home? Americans are spending over 400 hours in the kitchen each year with their families. As the heart of the home, the kitchen offers families - no matter what they look like - an opportunity to connect over the power of food. Check out these four tips for cooking with family.

2. Grocery shop ahead of time. Cooking in the heart of the home is often a sacred family activity. Fifty-six percent of Americans say they wish they didn’t have to go to the grocery store so often for more food, ice or water. Bulk buy your produce and keep it fresher for longer with a refrigerator that optimizes for temperature and 3.humidity.Makeit like mama. Precision is important when remaking a family recipe so it tastes just like you remember it. Three in five Americans say they can never make certain family recipes “just right.” While measuring out ingredients precisely is not typical for the family matriarch or patriarch - it’s usually a “pinch” of this, a “dash” of that - it is important to measure heat precisely, so you don’t overcook or undercook your meals.

Family Time

1. Pull out the family cookbook! What better way to reconnect with the family than with a traditional recipe that instantly brings back memories? Well over a third of Americans say that their fondest childhood memory is learning how to make a recipe with family members, from “Aunt Lydia’s chicken” to “Grandma’s arroz con pollo.”

4. Connect to something bigger. Fifty-six percent of all respondents agreed they’re proud to know recipes from their own cultural heritage and another 64% are eager to learn more about the foods and customs associated with their family’s culture. Branch out when deciding what to cook on a weekly or monthly basis and choose recipes that help you and your family connect with your cultural background.
