From Me To You... We are at a new stage in our lives, we have finally arrived at our Empty Nest. It feels like an amazing achievement to be honest. I have had the responsibility of raising children since 1988 (with one year off for good behavior) and I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I am so proud of the adults we have raised who are leading their lives and forging their own paths. But before I can truly hand off all responsibility, I have to get the last two to the finish line - graduation and college. I just wound up two sets of final college tours, and let me tell you, I learned a few interesting things along the way. Not about college or even raising children. About the Wonderful World of Travel. That is what my life has become of late. From Mom to travel agent in one easy step. Between scouring the internet for airfares, arranging hotel accommodation, and transportation at the college, I have barely had time to catch my breath. I did discover a way to save money on flights in the process. I was searching for cheap flights from Phoenix to Pullman, Washington. I know the normal routes and airlines that service

Estrella Publishing - White Tanks View magazine

them, but during my search a new option popped up. I didn’t want to book with the cut-rate site that had the deal, but they did show me how to get my son from here to Pullman in less time, and saved me $300 in the process - book separate tickets through two different airlines! That moment when I had purchased the first fare and was trying to secure a seat on the next one gave me chills, but it all worked out in the end. He made it there and is on his way back as I write this. This was his first solo adventure and although I was nervous that something would go wrong, he navigated it with ease. He even got to play in the snow, in April... The upside of that experience is that I know he is going to be just fine on his own, and that eases the transition into the next stage of our lives. But is it truly an empty nest? Not really, they are all still there with us, we just have to loosen the reins and let them do it on their own from here.

Travel Tips

Warm sand between your toes, a cool drink in your hand, the sun setting over the beautiful ocean ... these are the dreams of an ideal vacation. With an all-inclusive resort, planning is minimal so you can focus on enjoying what matters most - your vacation. The best resorts have something for everyone: mom relaxing at the spa, dad having a cocktail poolside, kids playing all day and adventurous friends seeking beachfront activities and entertainment. And while today’s all-inclusive resorts deliver elevated experiences and offerings for every age and interest, not all are alike. For example, some all-inclusive resorts offer enhanced food and beverage options served in a seaside lounge, while others may offer mojito and tequila lounges or unforgettable views with customized drinks prepared by expert mixologists. But not all resorts offer this level of service. Before you book your all-inclusive vacation, make sure your resort has the following items: 1. Look for a variety of cuisine, and then some A vacation means a break from cooking and meal planning, so when looking to book an allinclusive resort, make sure they offer multiple onsite restaurants to remove the hassle of deciding where to eat with your group.

often cater to couples’ needs by offering privacy options including adult pools, private swim-out suites and jetted tubs, plus romantic restaurants, world-class spas and casinos. Or, choose an all-inclusive resort with a kids’ club, which offers supervised and fun programs for children while giving mom and dad some space to hit the links or enjoy a quiet meal. 4. Education destination via culture Learning about and enjoying new cultures stimulates the mind and satisfies the curious soul, without leaving the resort. Great allinclusive resorts integrate the local culture with engaging programs, classes and experiences that will enhance your vacation, such as salsa and merengue lessons, tequila tastings and local crafts. 5. Above and beyond hospitality You want a place that spoils you yet feels like home. The right all-inclusive resort will have more than beachfront accommodations. Seek world-class spas, personalized concierge, friendly team members and high-end offerings. Once you have selected your resort, all you need to do is have fun.

CREATING BEAUTIFUL SMILES THAT LAST A LIFETIME Let us give you the smile you deserve!

2. Find all the fun in the sun Second to plentiful food and drink at hand, the best thing about an all-inclusive resort is all the activities included in your stay. Be sure to find a resort that offers everything you want. Most Mexican and Caribbean resorts have pools and beaches. But if you need adventure, seek resorts that also include water sports equipment for snorkeling and kayaking. Look for resorts offering live music, dazzling shows and dancing. 3. Privacy by the sea If your vacation is a romantic getaway, you’ll want seclusion and serenity. All-inclusive hotels 4 Estrella Publishing - White Tanks View magazine

Legal Advice NON-STRESS ESTATE PLANNING

Estate planning does not need to be complex or confusing. You deserve to have your questions answered and have documents that help you when you need it most. On-line services and computer forms simply do not address the variety of issues that might arise. The court process of probate can be avoided with a revocable trust for some but others can utilize a beneficiary deed with more ease. Privacy laws can prevent you from being assisted by your spouse or trusted friend or family member. Powers of attorney can be give the right person the legal authority to help you.

However, you need the correct power of attorney – whether it be for finances; medical health or mental health. Inheritances for minors, whether children or grandchildren, can be bogged down by a court conservatorship, if a trust is not used. A court conservatorship is more costly and burdensome than a probate. A good estate plan provides centralized management for your assets whether you are incapacitated or upon your death and can avoid obstacles and disputes when there are multiple disputes. Caregiving

The number of baby boomers, a demographic with 52 million people who are 65 and older, is projected to double by 2060. Many from this group will want to stay in their homes. In fact, a recent AARP study from November 2021 finds that 77% of older adults want to remain in their homes for the long term. That’s where caregivers come in. They can help seniors gain independence, not lose it. This article busts some myths about caregivers that may be keeping some people from a rewarding profession. Myth #1: You need a medical background to be a caregiver. Not true. All you need is a caring heart. Look at this list of people well suited to a caregiving career: Myth #2: I am a caregiver only if I care for a family member or someone who lives with me. Caregivers come from different walks of life. Some are teachers taking on caregiving as a

part-time way to give back. Some caregivers are retired or semi-retired, offering their unique skills to help older adults with limitations stay in their homes and communities. Some are just starting out in their careers. Some work full time as caregivers. Myth #3: Caregiving can be too challenging or time-consuming. Whatever your expertise, you can offer customized services to meet the needs of seniors or other adults in need of assistance within a flexible schedule. The rewards are as tangible for the caregiver as they are for the person receiving care. Myth #4: Caregiving is viewed as negative at a time when someone is losing independence. Think of caregiving as a way to help people keep their independence. Aging doesn’t have to mean seniors have to stop living. Caregiving allows older adults to thrive. By 2030 the boomer population will outnumber children. The need for caregivers has never been higher, nor more rewarding. In addition to making clients’ lives brighter, safer and more enjoyable, caregivers deliver the companionship, inspiration and happiness people deserve. Online Safety It’s never been more important for parents to ensure their children are safe and staying productive online. With so many popular apps, websites and streaming services, keeping track of what your children are exposed to can be difficult. Even the most cautious kids can become victims of cybercrimes, especially child identity theft. Children 18 years old and younger are often targets of identity theft because their unmarked credit scores and Social Security numbers are rarely monitored. According to a report by Javelin Research, child identity fraud costs families in the U.S. almost $1 billion a year and requires much time for parents to resolve. The report also found that 1.25 million children were victims of identity theft in 2021 and 1 in 50 children became an ID fraud victim in 2021 These statistics are frightening, but that doesn’t mean that parents need to live in fear. By taking proactive steps to protect your children online, you can empower them to use technology responsibly while keeping them safe from potential online threats.

Kelly Merryman, President and COO of Aura, an all-in-one digital safety platform. “Parental controls are a powerful tool that allows your children to safely explore the internet while giving you much-needed peace of mind.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that kids as young as eight years old spend an average of six hours per day looking at screens, and that number only goes up as kids get older. While you can’t monitor every minute your kids spend online, you can use parental controls to protect them as they enjoy the latest trends, games and shows. With these tools, families can foster healthy internet habits in kids as well as protect them (and you) from potential cybercrimes. To learn more about parental controls and access a free trial of Aura’s family plan, visit Aura’s website https://www.aura.com/

Child internet safety is not a new topic, but it’s become even more relevant to the public thanks to the rapidly growing number of social media platforms and other digital sites and apps. The issue is so prevalent that it’s caught the attention of lawmakers. Introduced to the U.S. Senate in February, the Kids Online Safety Act is a bipartisan bill that would create new rules and safeguards to protect children from stalking, exploitation, addiction and dangerous materials online. “The internet can open up a world of experiences for children, but it can also expose them and the whole family to digital crime,” said 8 Estrella Publishing - White Tanks View magazine

Did you know that stroke has no age limits, and younger adults are increasingly affected by stroke and its risk factors? Strokes happen when blood supply to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. In either case, parts of the brain become damaged or die.

Coordinator at Abrazo West Campus.

Every minute counts when a stroke is suspected. May is National Stroke Awareness Month, when health care professionals remind the public that understanding the signs of stroke are key to getting care.

More than 87 percent of strokes in the U.S. are ischemic strokes, caused by a clot that cuts off blood flow to a part of the brain. These types of strokes are largely treatable if a patient gets to a hospital in time.

Stroke affects about 800,000 people in the U.S. each year. Thankfully, residents of the West Valley have a Primary Plus Stroke Center nearby at Abrazo West Campus in Goodyear.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers a simple test to act FAST if you think someone may be having a stroke:

Face – ask the person to smile, does one side of the face droop? Arms – can the person raise both arms? Does one arm drift downward? Speech – ask the person to repeat a simple phrase, is the speech slurred or strange? Time – if you see any of these signs, call 911 right away. Also, note the time when the symptoms first appear, this helps health care providers determine the type of treatment needed. Submitted by Abrazo Health

Days are getting longer, temps are warming up, and you have lots of plans - but do you lack the energy to make them happen? Fortunately, simple meal and snack swaps, plus new approaches to your exercise routine, can help get you moving again. For better long-term energy and nutrition, try: * Apples - Apples provide filling fiber, vitamin C and antioxidants. * Avocados - These are a great source of heartfriendly monounsaturated fat, plus oleic acid, folate and vitamin E. * Nuts - Most nuts combine protein, healthy fats and fiber that help you feel full, so you’re less likely to experience energy dips. * Leafy green vegetables - Spinach is one example, full of nutrients like fiber, iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamins A, C, E and K - plus energy-boosting iron. Add spinach to any egg dish, soup or salad. * Fatty fish - Salmon is popular for good reason, as it’s flavorful plus full of protein and hearthealthy omega-3 fatty acids to fill you up and minimize blood sugar swings.

Try this recipe for a protein boost: Chai Latte Overnight Oats 2 tablespoons quick cooking oats, raw 2 tablespoons hemp hearts 2 tablespoons chia seeds 2 tablespoons coconut, unsweetened, shredded 1 Atkins Iced Chai Protein Shake 1 tablespoon pine nuts, roasted 1 teaspoon coconut, unsweetened, shredded 2 pinches ground cinnamon In each of 2 6-ounce jars with lids, mix 1 tablespoon oats, 1 tablespoon chia seeds, 1 tablespoon hemp hearts and 1 tablespoon coconut shreds until evenly combined. Add half the shake (5.5 fluid ounces) to each jar and mix until very well combined. Cover with lids and refrigerate at least 4 hours, or overnight. Before serving, lightly toast pine nuts in a 400-degree oven for 3 minutes. Top each jar with 1/2 tablespoon roasted pine nuts, 1/2 teaspoon coconut shreds and a pinch cinnamon. Makes 2 servings.

Pediatric mental health: What’s a parent to do? As a parent, seeing your child struggling can be overwhelming. Between 2016 and 2020, the rates of depression and anxiety in children and adolescents increased by over 25 percent (JAMA Pediatrics, 2022). Unfortunately, these rates have continued to rise since 2020 as a result of the stress and changes from the COVID-19 pandemic. What can you as a parent do to support your child? 1. Encourage your child to talk about how they are feeling and work to increase your child’s emotional literacy. 2. Limit screen time- this one is SO hard, I get it! Unfortunately, research has shown that for every hour above 1 hour of screen time per day there is an exponential increase in depression and anxiety. 3. Know the signs of when to get helpnoticeable changes in appetite and sleep (increases or decreases), changes in mood such as irritability and isolating, a drop in grades, and/ or less activity. The signs are not always the same for kids and adults. 4. Spend positive and productive time together as a family talking, playing games or being outside (fresh air, activity and sunlight are linked to decreased depression and anxiety). Families who know me or follow Periscope Pediatrics, know I frequently recommend the UnGame as a great way to have meaningful and deep conversations with your children in a less intrusive way. This can be done in combination with a game like UNO or Jenga or have everyone draw a card at the dinner table to get the conversation flowing. Estrella Publishing - White Tanks View magazine

5. If your child comes to you to discuss depression, anxiety or even suicidal thoughts, DON’T take it personally and DO take it seriously. Remain supportive and understand how hard (and scary) it likely was for them to come to you about what they are experiencing 6. Don’t be afraid to get help. Fortunately, resources are available: from teen suicide hotlines to the Crisis team who will come to your house to evaluate if your child needs a higher level of care for mental health concerns to your school counselor, short term resources abound. Just know, you and your child are not alone; this has been a difficult time for everyone and many children (and adults) are struggling- your child’s mental health is not a reflection of your parenting!!! And above all, remember you are not alone! Submitted by Counselor Amber- Periscope Pediatrics

Medicare Scams Since 1965, Medicare has provided health care coverage to millions of Americans. Anyone on Medicare is at risk of Medicare-related fraud, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) continues to warn people to watch out for scammers who steal Medicare Numbers and other personal information to exploit beneficiaries’ benefits. Broadly speaking, Medicare fraud occurs when someone makes false claims for health care services, procedures and equipment to obtain Medicare payments. Medicare fraud costs taxpayers billions of dollars and puts the health and welfare of beneficiaries at risk. “Medicare fraud is a serious issue that has affected millions of people in our country,” said CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure. “Anyone on Medicare is at risk of being a target of Medicare fraud, so you should use the CMS fraud tips to stay alert to protect yourself. By being aware of potential scams and reporting any you come across, you can do your part to protect yourself and others from Medicare fraud.” How to spot Medicare scams There are many types of Medicare scams, taking the form of unsolicited emails, phone calls, text messages, social media posts and phony websites. Scammers often claim to be from the Medicare office, an insurance company or a government office. They’ll ask for your personal and financial information, such as your Medicare or Social Security Number, so that they can submit false claims for payment. Remember that Medicare will never call, text, email or contact you through social media asking for your Medicare Number. 14 Estrella Publishing - White Tanks View magazine

Some common Medicare scams to watch out for include: * Offers of “free” genetic testing * Calls or emails about free medical equipment, such as a knee brace, walker or cane * Solicitations for other services, such as offers of “paid” clinical research trials While this is not a comprehensive list, these examples give you an idea of how to spot potential Medicare fraud. Scammers will do their best to present these services and products as genuine in exchange for your Medicare Number. How to protect yourself Now that you know how to spot Medicare fraud, you’ll need to know how to protect yourself from potential fraudsters. Remember to: * Guard your Medicare Number just like your Social Security card and credit card * Share your Medicare Number only with trusted health care providers * Review your Medicare statements, watch for services billed that look suspicious, and ask questions if something looks wrong How to report scammers Reporting Medicare fraud protects you and millions of other people with Medicare and those with disabilities. If you or someone you know have experienced Medicare fraud or suspect an offer you’ve received is a scam, report it as soon as possible. You will never be in trouble for reporting fraud. To learn more about Medicare fraud, visit Medicare.gov/fraud. To report potential Medicare fraud, you can call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-6334227) or report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
