From Me To You...

Welcome to the first issue of White Tanks View magazine. We hope you enjoy the articles, puzzles and games. Be sure to reach out to our advertisers, they are local and ready to help plus, they are the reason you get this publication for free every month!

I am a planner, always have been. In fact I usually have a plan, a back-up plan, and a worst case scenario plan. I suppose it is because I work on an “assume the best but prepare for the worst” mentality and for that you need a few plans. We also have four children and that takes a ton of planning. School, work, extra-curriculars, they all need to be combined in the plan.

Now that three of our kids are adults I thought I could ease up on the planning and allow others to take the lead. Well, as Michael Chabon said, “Man makes plans... and God laughs.”

for them up to this point. The problem is that it doesn’t work in our family dynamic.

I can’t drop everything to pick someone up from school when they decide not to go to a friend’s house after all, or they have to buy something for school the next day. I can help them out when I know what’s coming, we are working on that together and I know it will get better with time.

Long-term plans are something else I love to do.

You could call it a form of dreaming I suppose.

The things I would love to do if everything comes together. I have been planning a family trip for a couple of years now but because of Covid my plans keep getting shelved and changed.

My father turned 80 this summer and we were all supposed to be in England for a month of celebrations and exploration. Obviously that did not happen according to plan. We spent the summer in the US - California and Florida, where we dodged hurricanes and humidity. Fun, but not the original plan.

I am also coming to a new stage in life. Planning for retirement. Not the financial part, that happened many years ago, thank goodness.

Our lives changed dramatically a few months ago I am talking about the fun part. Downsizing to a smaller house, traveling, taking on a new and we have since welcomed two teenage girls hobby. All the things I have been putting on the into our home and our family. We love having back burner while I get on with the business of them and we have known them for most of their raising a family. The possibilities are endless lives so the transition is mostly seamless. Except well as endless as my budget allows anyway. I for the planning. These kids have never learned have never been to Belize, or on safari, I was how to plan ahead. For anything. They live on supposed to live in New Zealand with family the fly and change plans on a whim. They are when I was younger, perhaps I could finally see truly go with the flow girls and it has worked what life is like in the antipodes.

Whatever I decide to do I know that there will be many plans to make - and really that’s half the fun!

Pumpkin Fest at the Princess

Phoenix Greek Festival

Following the end of its summer space-themed events, the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess will host its fall festival with mini carnival rides, a pumpkin patch, fireworks, and a hay maze. New this year is The Cider Orchard with flaming ciders (alcoholic and nonalcoholic), kettle corn, and caramel apples, Mystic Passage with animatronics and photo opportunities, and “The Spookeasy” at the Plaza Bar.

The Phoenix Greek Festival at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Phoenix will celebrate 60 years in 2021. The three-day festival will have Greek food, music, dancing, and vendors selling artwork and jewelry. Friday, 5 p.m. - 10 p.m., Saturday, 11 a.m. - 10 p.m, and Sunday, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1973 E. Maryland Avenue, Phoenix AZ 85016; admission is $5, food and drink are extra; parking is $5 at church or free at Charles Schwab (24th Street and Lincoln).

Schnepf Farms Pumpkin & Chili Party

Schnepf Farms’ yearly fall festival runs throughout the month of October with a U-pick pumpkin patch, 10-acre corn maze, pig races, small amusement rides, hayrides, petting zoo, live entertainment, bonfires, chili dinners, and a spooky train ride. A new attraction this year will be a ropes course. Tickets are $24 per person and include more than a dozen rides, including superslide, hyperloop, ropes course, zip lines, plus a petting zoo, 4-acre, and 10-acre corn mazes. The train ride, haunted bus, food, and pumpkins are separate costs. A season pass is $79.

Kids and families can venture through a five-acre corn maze, play mini-golf, and jump on a giant jump pad, among other activities, at Vertuccio Farms’ yearly fall festival. There are also giant tube rolls, pumpkins, duck races, a petting zoo, barrel train rides, and pumpkin bowling. Admission is $12 per person. Kids two and younger are free.

Pet of the Month Spikey is a year old bearded dragon who owns Marley Park resident, Cash Malera.

Cash bought him with his birthday money last year. When Spikey isn’t outside on his leash with Cash, he can often be found staring out the window like he is in the photo.

He also loves cuddling under your hair and falling asleep, chasing flies, and roaming around the house. It’s not uncommon for him to end up under the couch which then must be moved so he can be rescued. Meal worms are his favorite and he HATES kale.

Furry Friends Did you know honey bees are responsible for over 35% of the foods you eat, as well as the honey you enjoy? Honey bees are vital to the health of the planet and to the food chain, as they are necessary for pollinating more than 90 food crops including fruits, vegetables and nuts - plus alfalfa, which is used as feed for the livestock that supply our meat and dairy. There are many ways you can enjoy the fruits of the honey bees’ labor, while also helping to support their habitats and ensuring they’ll be around for generations to come. The National Honey Board has partnered with registered dietitian Maggie Michalczyk, RDN, to bring you her favorite planet-friendly tips and ideas. Here are Michalczyk’s tips for enjoying and celebrating the hardworking pollinator.

1. Celebrate pollinator foods Honey bees are needed to pollinate over 90 crops. So the next time you are enjoying apples, avocados, cherries, almonds or sunflower seeds, you can celebrate the fact that all of these foods are made possible by hardworking honey bees.

2. Sweat for bees Movement is key to a balanced life. Skip the pesticides in your yard and pull weeds by hand instead. Then make sure to plant bee-friendly flowers and flowering herbs in your garden and yard.

Chicken Sheet Pan Dinner with Grapes, Carrots and Parsnips Ingredients 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin 1 1/4 teaspoons turmeric 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 2 large garlic cloves, minced 4 chicken thighs on the bone, skin removed and visible fat trimmed 2 medium onions, sliced 1/3-inch thick 3 carrots, peeled and cut in 2 and 1/2-inch sticks 2 medium parsnips, peeled and cut in 2 and 1/2inch sticks Freshly ground pepper 1 1/4 cups red California grapes

In a large bowl, stir to combine the oil, cumin, turmeric, salt and garlic. Add the chicken, turning to coat, and then transfer smooth side up to the baking sheet. Add the vegetables to the bowl and toss in the remaining spiced oil, then distribute them around the chicken pieces on the baking sheet. Season with freshly ground pepper.

Directions Heat the oven to 400 F with rack in the center.

Line a shallow baking sheet (10x15 or 11x17) with parchment paper or foil (shiny side down). If using foil, spray with vegetable oil cooking spray to prevent vegetables from sticking.

Roast the chicken and vegetables for 25 minutes. Sprinkle the grapes over the vegetables and roast about 5 minutes more, until the juices run clear when the chicken is pierced with the tip of a small sharp knife. (Note: for softer roasted grapes, add them to the pan earlier.)

Community Cares Our family loves Halloween in Surprise. There are amazing decorations to see, the excited energy that crowds of kids trick-or-treating create, and the fun of handing out candy too. I would argue that is more fun than the actual trick-or-treating, but don’t tell my kids!

Trick-or-treating brings candy, and with candy comes… candy wrappers. The day after Halloween always finds the local neighborhood littered with candy wrappers and other trash that demonstrate how much the neighborhood children enjoy their “Halloween Haul” every year. This year let’s work together to keep our community beautiful!

Before Halloween, consider talking to your kids about the importance of keeping track of their trash, and not littering.

Our family’s strategy is to put any trash we create

in our trick-or-treat bag and sort it our later.

Another option would be for parents to carry a separate bag for your trash as well as any trash seen on the ground along the way.

This year, the day after Halloween is a Monday, which for many means a walk to school. We typically walk our kids to school, and it is an easy opportunity to help clean up the mess of the night before. We grab a trash bag on our way out the door and pick up anything we see on our route. Don’t forget to bring the hand sanitizer!

Home Sweet Home One of the questions I’m asked most often is whether it’s a good time to buy a home. The answer depends on your current circumstances and homeownership. If you own your current home, but are looking to upgrade, downsize, or relocate, I typically recommend selling and buying now. Home values have appreciated significantly in the past year, making it a great time to sell. At the same time, low interest rates mean you can afford to purchase a more expensive home, especially if you’re reinvesting the equity from the sale of your current home.

If the market softens, it will be at least partly because interest rates have increased which means that even if it’s still a good time to sell, you may not be able to afford the house you want because your monthly payment will be higher.

If you don’t currently own a home, then it becomes a bit less straightforward. Prices could fall and that would seem like a better time to buy, but a softer market and falling prices will likely mean interest rate increases. That means you still might not be able to afford to buy the

house you want. All the crystal balls and market experts in the world can’t really predict what will happen with the market, overall economy, and interest rates, so if you can afford what you want at today’s low rates, buy now. If you can’t afford to buy now, then you could take a wait-and-see approach and hope housing will be more affordable soon. Unless you can pay cash for a home, however, it’s important to keep in mind that “affordable” is just as much about the monthly payment as the actual price of the home; and payment amounts are dependent on interest rates. A home purchased for $450,000 at today’s interest rates is going to be much more “affordable” than a home purchased for the same $450,000 at higher interest rates in the future.
