From Me To You...

I am no longer allowed to throw balls in the house. Apparently my family is tired of dodging random missiles, picking up broken items and occasionally getting winged themselves. In fact as soon as I reach for a dog toy people duck for cover. I find it a little insulting to be honest.

My aim is not that bad, most of the damage is caused by rebounds and people walking into the line of fire. That is the line I am going with anyway.

It is amazing how many things I aim for in life and get a near miss, but it is not about the ones you miss. As I try to instill in my children, you learn more from failing than success. Sure success is more fun, but failing builds resilience, tenacity and drive. Learning that lesson young is preferable as it can be a hard lesson to learn as an adult.

One of our children is good at math. I mean he just gets it. When I hear a problem that starts with “A train leaves the station at 10am...” my head starts to throb and the world fades to black.

He always knows the answer, always did. Then he went to high school and hit a wall. He stopped loving math and took a couple of years to come back to it. But he did, and pretty spectacularly at that, completing his college math before even starting his finance degree. He fell, figured out that if you fail at something you learn, pick yourself up and do it differently next time - and

he learned it when he was young. That is a skill which makes him able to roll with the punches in his adult life.

Many people never learn that lesson, repeating their mistakes over and over again.

We all see the pizza joint that goes out of business only to be replaced by yet another pizza joint. There has to be a reason it is not successful in that location!

As for my pitching skills, I am not giving up just yet. Practice makes perfect is another phrase I am hanging on to - perhaps I should just take it outside for a while.

Adding Protein You may have noticed protein bars and shakes popping up at grocery stores or gyms. Coverage of the benefits of protein is all the rage. So it might be surprising to learn that almost half of older adults are not consuming enough protein, thus negatively impacting their health, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging.

What role should protein play in our diet?

“Protein can be thought of as one of the building blocks to our muscles, bones and blood,” said Dr. James Metcalf, a medical director with UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement. “Not only does protein help keep our body strong, it helps promote good balance and mobility - all important factors to being able to live independently as we age.”

Additionally, protein helps combat common signs of aging, like declines in muscle mass, strength and function, which can put you at greater risk of falling and fracturing bones.

But before you grab the nearest protein bar, let’s discuss exactly how much protein you should consume each day.

How much protein do I need The National Academy of Medicine’s

recommended dietary allowance for protein is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day. For an adult who weighs 195 pounds that’s 71 grams per day; for someone who weighs 170 pounds that’s 62 grams per day.

While it is helpful to know how many grams of protein you should aim to consume each day, knowing the amount of protein in the foods we eat can be a bit of a mystery. Below are some sources of high-quality protein and the corresponding amount of protein in each, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture FoodData Central database: * Chicken breast (one): 54 grams of protei * Salmon (0.5 fillet): 40 grams of protein * Lentils (one cup cooked): 18 grams of protein * Black beans (one cup cooked): 15 grams of protei * Greek yogurt (one container; plain, nonfat): 10 grams of protei * Egg (one): 6 grams of protein Bottom line If you feel you might benefit from adding some sources of protein into your diet, be sure to talk with your doctor before making any drastic changes.

Increasing your protein consumption will not be a silver bullet to keeping your body healthy as you age. Staying physically active is also important to help maintain your health and live your best life.

Real ID and Your Driver License

Does your driver license have a yellow circle with a star in the top right corner like the one pictured? If not, your license will no longer be adequate ID to travel on a plane or enter a federal building after September 30, 2020.

So, you have a year to update if you want to.

This change is due to the Real ID act of 2005 and you can find out more about it on the Arizona Department of Transportation website: https:// www.azdot.gov/motor-vehicles/driver-services/ arizona-travel-id When I moved to Arizona a few years ago, I got a plain old ordinary Arizona license; it was valid for over a decade and I even liked the picture! But since I fly regularly, I decided to update my license to comply with Real ID (also known as Travel ID). And I decided to update early because the process must be completed in person – although the initial application can be filled out on line. I am imagining this transition is going to create chaos the closer we get to the deadline: lines at the Department of Transportation and very frustrated people at security checkpoints on October 1st, 2020. I am all for avoiding that!

The application is available on the azdot. gov website; the application walks you thru three categories of documents that are required to strengthen the identification value of your license. The list includes things like a passport, social security card and proof of residency (utility bills, tax bills, etc…). Each category has options.

Follow the online directions carefully – I watched several people get turned away for not bringing the correct paperwork.

Appointments to complete the in-person review of your documents can be made online at the azdot.gov website. In addition, the state has contracted with some 3rd party vendors who are authorized to review your documents and update your license. For the most part, 3rd party vendors do not require appointments and a list of authorized sites is available on the Department of Transportation website. Keep in mind, though, that 3rd party vendors are going to charge more (plan on at least double) than the state fee of $25.

If you are not online and would prefer to talk with someone about your options, the department has posted this phone number: 602-255-0072.

This transition is going to impact many, many people and plenty of folks will get caught unaware and be denied boarding at the airport because they just didn’t know the transition was happening. Avoid the chaos. If you use your driver license to fly, get it updated now!

Good Night!

As you drift off to sleep, how does your nightly position affect your health?

Whether you prefer stomach, back, side or curled into a fetal position, the way you snuggle into the pillow may affect your breathing patterns, neck and back pain, and circulation. A less-serious effect, but one most people would probably like to avoid, is an increase in facial wrinkles.

Sleeping position pros and cons Here are some of the pros and cons of go-to nightly postures, according to the National Sleep Foundation.

1) Back: Lying on your back and assuming a neutral body position typically results in the least amount of strain on your head, neck and spine.

But studies show links between back sleepers and snoring, so if this is something you are prone to, try flipping to your side. Also, sleeping on your back is not a good choice if you have sleep apnea, because your tongue can fall back, narrowing the airway.

2) Side: Side-sleeping, which is the most common position for adults, helps to open our airways to allow for steady airflow to the lungs.

Researchers have found resting on the side may boost brain health, at least when monitoring the sleeping patterns of laboratory animals,

but a separate study showed the potential for increased wrinkles in side-sleepers.

3) Fetal position: The fetal position helps improve circulation and is a good bet for people who tend to snore. Be sure not to curl too tightly as you drift off, however, as it may cause difficulty breathing.

4) Stomach: Sleeping on your stomach may make breathing regularly a challenge because airway passages could be compromised. Others may experience neck pain or tingling in joints and muscles due to poor circulation, which is a common challenge for people with diabetes. To help avoid putting pressure on the spine, tuck a pillow under your pelvis to keep a neutral lumbar position. One other negative: Enhanced wrinkles may be a side effect of stomach slumber.

While changing your default sleeping position is no easy task, you can help the process by supporting your head and legs with pillows designed for your ideal position.

Purple Leash Project An estimated 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will experience some form of domestic abuse in their lifetime. Escaping abusive situations and starting over in a new and safe environment is an overwhelming experience for victims, especially when pets are involved. An added challenge is that very few domestic violence shelters in the U.S. currently accept and house pets. This leaves abuse victims with a difficult decision - flee to safety but leave their pet behind or stay with their abuser? Almost half of domestic violence victims choose to stay in an abusive situation out of fear of what might happen to their pet.

As those who live with pets can attest, pets do so much for their humans - they provide unconditional love and comfort, they demonstrate loyalty and devotion, and they teach people about care and compassion. Pets can also sense when their owners experience sadness or pain, and their physical presence can provide comfort and promote healing. In essence, pets and people are better together.

How can you get involved in the Purple Leash Project?

Be vocal and spread awareness about this issue - Domestic violence is an issue that many people aren’t comfortable talking about. Don’t be one of them. Instead, use your voice to advocate for your neighbors with pets who may be struggling with abuse by raising awareness of the lack of pet-friendly options for domestic violence victims. That’s why Purina has partnered with RedRover, a national nonprofit organization that helps people and animals in crisis situations, to create the Purple Leash Project. The Purple Leash Project not only raises awareness about this issue, but the program also helps provide funding and resources necessary to help more domestic violence shelters become safe, healing spaces for pets and people.

As part of the initiative, Purina is committing more than $500,000 to establish Purple Leash Project grants, which are awarded in partnership with RedRover to shelters across the country to fund renovations to make their shelter spaces pet-friendly. The Purple Leash Project aims to increase the number of pet-friendly domestic abuse shelters across the U.S. to ensure there are more resources available for survivors with pets in every state.

Resourceful thieves and cyber criminals continue to find new ways to hack U.S. consumers’ sensitive personal information. Have you ever stored credit card information on your phone for added convenience to make payments in a checkout lane? Do you ever store passwords in apps to transfer funds between accounts? And what’s to keep hackers from accessing a wireless network you check your email on while you’re grabbing a quick cup of coffee?

The latest trends in home decor reveal a desire for a feeling of tranquility and calmness, perhaps as a response to today’s overly busy and distracted lifestyles. From Marie Kondo’s decluttering craze to a return to natural materials in home design, everyone is looking for a way to create a peaceful, less hectic inner space. When it comes to home decor, less is definitely more.

How can you tap into this yen for a little more Zen? 1. Simplify your design strategy When revamping your room to create a more minimalist effect, choose a limited color palette, meaning one to three colors at most.

Select mostly more muted or neutral colors, though you can use one vivid color in a piece of furniture or art to grab the spotlight. Let the textures of the materials that you use for the floors, walls, ceilings and furnishings - whether

they are natural wood, stone, ceramics, glass, tile, fabrics or canvas - create the room’s visual interest instead of yesterday’s too-busy colors and patterns. Choose a couple of contrasting textures, like glass and reclaimed lumber, or woven fabric and stone, to highlight in the room for the best effect.

2. Declutter your spaces Decide what items you really want and need to be in each room and get rid of the rest - or find a way to store it neatly, preferably out of sight.
