From Me To You... Back to School! Those three words struck terror in my heart as a child, new people, new schedules, new places, new opportunities to embarrass myself with the amount of things I didn’t know. Would my new back-to-school outfits be cool or not? Would I get the teacher everyone loved, or be stuck with the ones everyone dreaded? The list was endless.

As a parent I felt slightly differently about back to school time. Entertaining 4 small people of varying ages for several months in the blistering heat of summer vacation went rapidly from an adventure full of opportunities to becoming a burden of keeping them busy and trying to stop the endless bickering. I must say that despite my resolutions at the beginning or each summer I did use television and later the internet in heavy doses - always in a educational way, of course ;) Now I am getting a degree and back-to-school applies to me. It is very different approaching education as an adult who has chosen to reapply myself to academia. I am soon to begin my second year as a Mature Student and this time

Call now and Save!

I have a confidence in my abilities as well as an interest in what I will be learning. Finding notebooks and pens is fun when I am doing it for myself. Ordering text books and choosing my subjects holds an appeal that I don’t remember from my youth. I studied Shakespeare in high school and we all dreaded it. The groans as we tried to understand the language would reverberate around the classroom. Now I see Twelfth Night on the curriculum and I am excited for the challenge. Perhaps that has something to do with my ability to get help via the internet now but either way it is going to be interesting. Having a full year under my belt I have the confidence that I can do this, and I realized that I enjoy learning. Interacting with others taking the same path and making new friends is all part of this journey and I am looking forward to going back to school!

Curb Appeal It’s a well-known fact that homes with strong curb appeal not only tend to sell faster, but also have higher perceived home values - as much as 7%-14% more. While there are many large-scale renovations that can add curb appeal to your home, there are just as many simple refreshes you can make without spending a lot of time or money. Here are five easy ways to boost your home’s curb appeal - and its value - in as little as a few hours: 1. Clean or repaint your front door Simply washing away some of the built-up dirt and grime can breathe new life into this focal point of your home. For an affordable, more eyecatching upgrade, consider painting your front door a bold, vibrant hue that coordinates with the rest of your home’s color palette to help draw buyers in.

concrete cracks are both common and inevitable given they are in high-traffic areas and are susceptible to the annual freeze/thaw cycle. Without proper attention and repairs, these cracks are not only unsightly, but can lead to more serious issues or worse, pose safety concerns. 5. Add color with flowers or plants From adding flowers or planters on your porch, to installing window boxes for an added pop of color, this is an easy and affordable afternoon project that instantly makes your home look more welcoming, approachable and modern while adding to its perceived value. Be sure to choose varieties that will get enough sunlight based on where they’re planted and mix and match colors based on your home’s color scheme for the best results. For more tips to help tackle your home improvement projects, visit DAP.com.

2. Ensure your doors, windows and siding are sealed With warmer months there often comes rainy and wet weather, so now is the perfect time to ensure your doors, windows, siding and other exterior surfaces won’t fall prey to water leakage during the next summer storm. 3. Update outdoor hardware and lighting House numbers, the entry door handle and porch light fixtures are all elements that add style and interest to your home’s curb appeal. Also consider updating your porch light fixtures for added appeal and safety. Complete your entryway upgrade by choosing a new entry door handle or lockset that complements your house numbers and light fixtures for the most cohesive look. For all three, bronze finishes often look best with traditional homes, while brushed nickel suits more modern ones. 4. Repair any unsightly cracked concrete Driveway, sidewalk, patio, and other outdoor 4

Perfect Pergola Do dreams of lazy days soaking up the sun have you looking for ways to extend your living space outdoors? You’re not alone. A little inspiration and a new pergola make it easy to extend your living space outdoors. Here are three simple ways to incorporate a pergola into your backyard layout and bring the ultimate outdoor space from concept to reality. Frame an open-air workspace Consider using a pergola to frame a flexible open-air workspace that’s separate from the house. Pergolas typically sport uncovered rafters for slight but noticeable shade - much like sitting under a tree. This can help reduce the sun’s glare on a computer screen while still allowing natural light and a warm breeze to flow through the workspace. You can increase the amount of shade these open-air structures cast by draping outdoor curtains from the rafters. Finish setting the scene for heads-down concentration with comfortable outdoor furniture, potted plants and lighting accessories. Don’t forget to provide access to an outlet to keep computers and phones fully charged.

Cook up a designated zone for dining al fresco If your home’s layout is limiting the number of guests you can entertain, consider bringing activities that are traditionally done indoors to the backyard. For example, a pergola can help define a designated zone for cooking and dining, complete with a full-size outdoor kitchen or bar. And with the right building materials, there’s no need to worry about what effects these types of activities might have on your backyard structure. Create a relaxing backyard getaway If it’s difficult to find time for yourself within the walls of your home, use a pergola to create a backyard getaway that invites rest. Typically, freestanding pergolas can be assembled across any type of outdoor surface, so consider installing it in a secluded corner of your property for moments of meditation. Create a peaceful sanctuary next to a pool or water feature to enjoy the sound of moving water during an at-home yoga practice - or a nap. Complete your restorative backyard getaway with outdoor lighting for ambience on a summer night. Whatever its function, it will surely add one-ofa-kind personality to your home’s outdoor living space.

Clean Machine Face it - as much as you enjoy having a clean home, limited time and energy can make cleaning seem like a never-ending chore. However, there are some tips and tricks that can help you optimize your time for better results, so you can get back to doing what you love. Try these pro tips to help you become more efficient with your cleaning routine.

1. Schedule it Just as you schedule important appointments on your calendar, make sure to block off time for at least one regular cleaning session each week, so you don’t run into the end-of-the-weekend panic or go into a whirlwind of cleaning when someone’s about to drop by. Set aside time for a full-home run-through to pick up clutter, dust and vacuum. Allow extra time on high-traffic rooms where cleanliness is especially important, like the kitchen and bathrooms. 2. Delegate it You don’t have to do it all. Get everyone in the household involved in your cleaning efforts. Make sure to be specific and clear about what

6

Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

each person’s obligation is, and that they schedule time on their calendars too. Family members will be more consistent if you give them choices about their chores and/or rotate them so nobody is stuck doing the hardest chores all the time. 3. Start at the top Work from the top down, as dust you sweep away from cleaning ceiling fans, windows and other surfaces will settle on the floor during the process. Tackling your floors last will be satisfying as well as highly effective for a feeling of overall cleanliness. 4. Troubleshoot the trouble spots As you implement your cleaning process, take note of areas that always get dirtiest or accumulate the most clutter. Typical areas might be “dumping spots” such as near your front entrance or by a staircase. Consider providing a box, bin, shelf or hooks to hold things that would just end up cluttering that area. With these tips, you can put an efficient process in place to accomplish your cleaning chores more quickly and easily - and have time to enjoy the results of your efforts.

Yum Yum

Fresh ears of corn are one of those foods that bring back memories of care-free summer days with backyard barbeques or beachside clambakes ~ yet we can take advantage of it year ‘round in its frozen and canned forms as well! I’m a soup girl, usually ordering it when I’m dining out if it’s on the menu, and I make it at home since it’s often a great way to use up leftovers in the fridge with a few pantry additions. This version of corn chowder is a crowd favorite ~ layering of flavors and textures ~ the sweet crispness of corn kernels, the creamy smoothness of the pureed potatoes and coconut milk, and the spicy kick of Madras curry powder. Many supermarkets carry McCormick Organic Mild Curry, yet you can easily order Rajah Mild Madras Curry Powder from Amazon for $7.

1 T chopped fresh cilantro Salt & pepper to taste Saute onion, garlic, and thyme in butter over medium heat in a large stock pot until onion begins to soften. Add the corn, stock, potatoes, and sugar and bring to boil. Lower heat and simmer for 25-30 minutes. In separate pan, melt 2 T butter and add curry powder; cook 3-5 minutes until fragrant. Remove soup from heat to puree in food processor. Scoop half of the soup into the bowl of the processor and blend until smooth. Return to soup pot. Stir in curry butter, coconut milk, cilantro, salt & pepper; cook for an additional 15 minutes so that flavors can blend. Best eaten the day it’s made! And always have some crusty bread nearby whenever you serve soup!! Submitted by Maureen Woods

Budgeting Food and gas prices continue to rise, on top of record-high housing costs in many cities across the U.S. If you’re an older adult who is already living on a tight budget, today’s inflation can be particularly difficult. Fortunately, there are programs available that can help you save money on health care, prescriptions, food, utilities and more. One of the easiest ways to find out if you’re eligible for benefits is to visit the National Council on Aging’s BenefitsCheckUp.org. The free and confidential tool connects older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers to benefit programs. The site is easy to use, even for people with minimal digital experience. “It only takes a few minutes to learn about all the programs available and how to apply,” said Ramsey Alwin, president and CEO of NCOA. “For example, there are Medicare programs that can boost your budget by helping with prescription drug costs, as well as premiums, deductibles and coinsurance.”

There are thousands of programs on BenefitsCheckUp, including: * The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which can help you pay for healthy food * The Medicare Part D Low Income Subsidy and Medicare Savings Programs, which can help people with Medicare afford their out-of-pocket health care expenses * The Housing Choice Vouchers and Public Housing Programs, which can help with housing costs * Supplemental Security Income, which provides cash for basic needs * The Affordable Connectivity Program, which provides discounted internet services * The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which can help you pay for home heating and cooling Millions of older adults are eligible for, but not enrolled in these programs. In fact, NCOA estimates that $30 billion in benefits go unused each year simply because older adults don’t know about these programs - or how to apply. BenefitsCheckUp.org will give you a personalized list of benefits you may be eligible for and the steps you need to apply, including links to the correct government agencies and applications.

Ahoy!

Below are 5 tips from Discover Boating to improve your nautical know-how in no time to ensure the best possible experience on the water. 1. Learn the rules of the water. It is important to have the boating information and certifications you need to be a safe and responsible boater. By consulting Discover Boating’s safe boating tips, developing a safety checklist and obtaining the necessary training or certificates in your state, you not only protect yourself and your passengers but also other boaters on the water. 2. Take a class. Take the helm and become a confident boater. Sign up for a boating lesson to hone your powerboating, sailing or watersports skills by mastering the basics while having fun along the way. 3. Visit a boat show. Boat shows are an ideal place to immerse yourself in the boating lifestyle and provide a unique opportunity to meet faceto-face with - and shop - a variety of boat dealers and marine product companies all under one

roof. Most boat shows also offer educational opportunities (often complimentary) whether you’re a seasoned skipper looking to improve your skills or a new boater looking for tips on everything from boating safety to navigation and boat operation. Find a boat show in your area. 4. Look for the seal of approval. When shopping for a boat, whether at a boat show, online or at a dealership, check to make sure it is NMMA Certified. NMMA Certified boat and trailer manufacturers have been independently inspected to ensure they meet strict industry standards for safety and construction, as well as all federal regulations. Look for the NMMA Certified sticker near the helm of a boat. 5. Preserve your boat with proper maintenance. Similar to car maintenance, there are a few areas that require regular maintenance by the owner, and a few areas that require maintenance at routine intervals, which most leave to the professionals. Prepare a boat maintenance checklist that covers everything from engine needs to cleaning to electrical systems to ensure your boat has a long lifespan. Enjoy your next boating adventure on the water. Visit DiscoverBoating.com for resources, storage options, tips and how-tos on the water.

Legal Advice NON-STRESS ESTATE PLANNING

Estate planning does not need to be complex or confusing. You deserve to have your questions answered and have documents that help you when you need it most. On-line services and computer forms simply do not address the variety of issues that might arise. The court process of probate can be avoided with a revocable trust for some but others can utilize a beneficiary deed with more ease. Privacy laws can prevent you from being assisted by your spouse or trusted friend or family member. Powers of attorney can be give the right person the legal authority to help you.

Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

However, you need the correct power of attorney – whether it be for finances; medical health or mental health. Inheritances for minors, whether children or grandchildren, can be bogged down by a court conservatorship, if a trust is not used. A court conservatorship is more costly and burdensome than a probate. A good estate plan provides centralized management for your assets whether you are incapacitated or upon your death and can avoid obstacles and disputes when there are multiple disputes.
