Avoid the Storm Arizona Monsoon Safety Tips
Monsoon Season in Arizona is June 15th to September 30th, although moisture doesn’t normally build up until the first week of July. It is not uncommon for Arizona to receive half of its yearly precipitation from the Monsoon season alone. The season can bring heavy rains, flash floods, high winds, dust storms, and even tornadoes.
General Safety Tips
Keep an emergency kit handy that includes portable cell phone chargers, battery power lights, a mini first-aid kit, and AM/ FM radio.
Contact your city or town office or local fire station to see if they offer sandbags to protect your residence.
Keep a raincoat an/ or umbrella handy in case there is an immediate downpour.
Clear gutters, overgrown vegetation and other obstacles around your home to ensure water runs away from the building.
Beware of potential health risks of playing, wading and swimming in collected stormwater. It could contain runnoff and pollutants, as well as be electrically charged from downed power lines.
Driving Safety Tips
511
SLOW Don’t enter a dust storm or torrential downpour area if you can avoid it.
When faced with low- or zero-visibility conditions, pull your vehicle off the pavement as far as possible, stop, turn off lights, set the emergency brake, take your foot off of the brake pedal to be sure the tail lights are not illuminated.
If you can’t pull off the roadway, proceed at a speed suitable for visibility, turn on lights and sound horn occasionally. Use the painted center line to help guide you. Look for a safe place to pull off the roadway.
Be careful of flooded areas, since a majority of casualties occur when drivers misjudge the depth of standing water or the force of running water.
Go to www.az511.gov, call 511 or download the free AZ 511 app for updated road and weather conditions.

From Me To You...
when anyone is sick has great merit, and going forwards I am encouraging my family to do the same.
Back to school! It is hard to believe I am saying those words. For so long our children and grandchildren have been stuck at home and life has been on pause. But now life can resume — as if nothing happened. I already see message boards full of posts from parents scrambling to find specific school supplies, asking which school or class local children are going to attend, and over all of this is the palpable sense of relief that we can finally get back to normal.
I don’t know about you, but we amassed quite the mask collection during the pandemic. It took a while to find the right size, shape, and coverage for everyone, resulting in a basket full of left overs. I suppose I could fashion them into a small quilt or tea cozy but tucking them into backpacks seems much easier. That way if the kids end up in a situation where a classmate is coughing and spluttering, they can whip out a mask and protect themselves.
I don’t know about you but when I started to venture out into the world again I was tentative to say the least. Like a creature emerging from hibernation, I was not sure what the world would look like after so long. It is one thing to have a layer of protection (i.e. a mask) between me and those germs, but walking around without a mask took some getting used to.
Going back to that quilting idea. I bet there is an enterprising group of quilters out there who could make a covid quilt from all our masks. It could be placed in a museum so people could see it in the future and marvel at what we have overcome. I will not be one of those people — I still haven’t finished my crocheted blanket I started at the beginning of the pandemic!
It wasn’t just the protection I missed. Having a cloth over half of my face has had several advantages. You see, the mask not only gave me protection, it also covered half of my wrinkles and half of any blemishes. Add a pair of sunglasses and I barely showed my face to the world at all! Ever run out of the house after chugging a cup of coffee? No need to be concerned about breathing noxious fumes over everyone when you wear a mask! It also reduced the amount of halitosis I was exposed to. That was quite a bonus.
Catherine Uretsky Editor, Viva magazine catherine@estrellapublishing.com 623-594-9283
Vanity aside, the best side effect of wearing masks for my family was the reduction of colds and flu that we experienced last year. Every year we suffer through various viral bugs, and due to health issues, a cold in my children becomes pneumonia for me. I am sure some of that freedom form illness was due to the quarantine, but once the kids went back to school I had braced myself for the expected germ swap. And... nothing! No colds, no flu, no random virus swept our house and it was glorious. I think the Japanese culture of mask wearing Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

Long Covid The COVID-19 pandemic has had more impact on the world than could have been imagined. One unexpected impact is the long-term symptoms some people experience for weeks or months after recovering from the disease, a syndrome called long COVID. Researchers estimate 10% to 30% of people who contract COVID-19 develop long COVID after recovering from the disease. Those suffering from long COVID experience ongoing combinations of symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, body aches, coughing, joint pain, chest pain, intermittent fever, difficulty concentrating, headaches and even continued loss of taste and smell. Others also report the mental impacts of prolonged symptoms, which include depression, anxiety, changes to their mood and sleep, and a mental “brain fog” that won’t lift. In all, people suffering with long COVID can have up to 200 symptoms. Dr. Archelle Georgiou, an author and expert in consumer healthcare, said that minimizing symptoms and the people who are experiencing long COVID is another unfortunate stage in this · Open every night from 5 pm to 1 am pandemic. · Every child seen by a pediatrician · Faster than the emergency room Understanding · Online registration to get into queue that long or register for telehealth visit · Telehealth visits from anywhere in AZ COVID is a · AHCCCS and most major insurance real syndrome, accepted, cash pay rates available should be · Easy access off 101 and I-10 treated by · Rapid COVID testing available experts, and is 623-643-9233 not imagined GoodNightPeds.com may be a relief for some who are 10320 W McDowell Rd Bldg. ongoing effects of the virus. While the number of infected people who will develop long-lasting symptoms is unclear, what is true is those with long COVID can be old, young, healthy or those with chronic conditions. Although many experiencing prolonged symptoms of COVID-19 do not require hospitalization, the ongoing symptoms still have a major impact on their daily lives, livelihood and, of course, health. A recent COVID Symptom Study of more than 3,700 people with long COVID in 56 countries found that more than half were not able to work full time because of their ongoing symptoms. With symptoms varying from day to day, individuals can feel isolated - alone on an unpredictable journey. The pandemic has revealed how truly important connecting and seeking social support from your family and friends is as you go through challenging times. Suffering from ongoing symptoms of COVID-19, like any other health journey, can be difficult to endure alone. There are many resources to read online, however having support from others and a sense of community are also very important. Connecting with other long COVID patients in a virtual community is an important way to stay abreast of new health information and a way to get emotional support as you navigate your health journey. Finding social support and connection is important considering those who are experiencing long COVID or long-lasting symptoms are reporting a rise in sense of isolation, according to a 2020 study. “Research has shown listening to other people’s stories can improve both mental and physical health. Sharing your story is empowering and liberating and helps not only yourself but others through creating empathic connections and supportive audiences,” said Georgiou. In the presence of the unknown of long COVID, love and support can be a lifeline. The power of meaningful connections is real, and the support of a community is crucial as long COVID patients continue through their health journey. August 2021

When the weather gets hot, it’s natural to seek cooling remedies such as splashing in a pool, sipping iced beverages and making meals that are quick to prepare and don’t heat up the kitchen. Fresh grapes are a cooling ingredient that can refresh and elevate summertime meals with a burst of color, flavor and pleasing texture. For a fabulous finish, go all in with a refreshing Grape Tart with Lemon Cream for dessert. Using a store-bought, prebaked tart shell or graham cracker crust makes this an easy, no-bake confection. Fresh Grape Tart with Lemon Cream Prep time: 15 minutes plus chilling Yield: Makes 10 servings Ingredients 1 prebaked tart shell or graham cracker crust 4 ounces reduced-fat cream cheese (Neufchatel) 1/4 cup low-fat sour cream
2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice About 3 cups grapes, halved Directions In a medium bowl, whisk together the cream cheese, sour cream and 2 tablespoons sugar. Whisk in the lemon juice. Spread the cream cheese mixture over the tart base, leaving a 1/2inch border. Arrange the grapes in concentric circles over the cream cheese mixture. Chill until ready to serve.

Out & About
After over a year of staying home, people are eager to start exploring places both near and far again. Mother Nature offers ample opportunity for adventure, with outdoor recreation activities to suit every personality. Whether you’re planning a road trip across the country or opting for a local day trip, you can ensure you’re ready for a memorable experience outside by packing wisely. Be proactive about sun protection Few things are better than the smell of fresh air and the warm feeling of the sun on your skin. However, too much sun can cause sunburn, heat exhaustion or worse. No matter the outdoor activity, it’s important to take proper sun protection steps. Start by dressing in light layers, which can not only help you stay comfortable as temperatures change throughout the day, but also serve as protection from the sun. Clothing made from cotton is a good option because it is lightweight and breathable. A hat that protects the eyes and face is a must-have, as well as UV-blocking sunglasses.
nutrients to keep you satisfied for long periods of time. Get the gear Comfort is key to enjoying the great outdoors. If your exploration will get you up close to Mother Nature, pack clothing and accessories that are easy to wash if they get dirty. You’ll also need the right apparel, like proper footwear for all day play. Feet may get wet or sweaty, so consider socks made with moisture-wicking wool to avoid blisters. Finally, the flora and fauna are some of the best parts of exploring the world around you, but keep in mind that includes bugs. Avoid wearing strong perfumes or heavily scented deodorants that may attract insects on adventure day and bring your preferred bug repellent in your bag to ward off bites.
Of course, make sure to add sunscreen to your travel bag and reapply regularly throughout the day. The American Cancer Society recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 and reapplying it every two hours, or more frequently when swimming or sweating. Stay fueled and hydrated From the beach to the mountains and beyond, having wholesome snacks and drinks on hand helps maintain energy levels so you can fully enjoy any outdoor activity. Pack a reusable water bottle and make sure you have enough to stay hydrated in the summer sun. As for snacks, the best backpack options are easily portable, don’t require refrigeration and are full of protein and Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

Furry Friends As we ease back into “normal” life, try these home remedies to help your pup manage their anxiety. * Identifying triggers The first step to calming your pet is to identify the events that may trigger their anxiety, such as thunderstorms, loud noises or long periods of alone time. Once identified, you can better prepare for when you’re leaving the home. * Create a safe space Make a den to serve as your pet’s safety zone while you’re away. Use soft, plush bedding inside a small crate in a designated place within your home to create a safe space your pup will want to nuzzle into. All dogs, large and small, like to feel safe. This tip is also helpful during thunderstorms, fireworks and any other anxietyinducing events. * Play peaceful tunes Try soothing your dog with classical or peaceful
music. Classical music has been successfully used in many studies to calm pets. Keep the volume at a level that can drown out any outside noises, while not being overwhelming. * Get moving Take your dog for a run, walk or play fetch before any events or leaving the house. This will help tire them out, and thus reduce their anxiety throughout the day. Try incorporating these activities into your daily routine. * Nutrition is key A balanced diet does more for your dog than just manage their weight. Making sure your pup is getting the necessary nutrients can improve their digestive health, skin and coat, energy levels, allergies and sensitivities, and more. Determining and meeting the unique nutritional needs of your pet is made easier with personalized nutrition from Tailored Pet. By taking an online quiz about your dog’s needs, Tailored customizes a food blend optimized just for them. If your pet’s anxiety becomes severe visit your veterinarian for a medical examt. REVERSE MORTGAGE FAQ'S Will the government or lender own my home?
Can my family member have ownership in my home if I should pass?
NO! The homeowner(s) who occupy the property will remain on title and have full ownership. The reverse mortgage is simply a lien recorded against the property, just like any other mortgage.
Yes! The owner(s) may add other family members or place the home in a trust, so family automatically has ownership in the property and equity as well.
Will my family be responsible for the debt?
If I take out a reverse mortgage, does that mean I will leave nothing to my family?
NO! A reverse mortgage is a non-recourse loan, so if your value ever falls below what you owe, your family will never have to pay the deficiency.
You must own your home outright in order to do a reverse mortgage! FALSE! You may already have existing mortgage, which can be refinanced and paid off with the reverse mortgage. A reverse mortgage could
14 Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine
be just what you need!
NO! Reverse mortgages have insurance automatically built in to protect the family. Most homes continue to increase in value over time leaving even more equity for family. Even if the property value should decrease below what is owed, the family can acquire the property for 5 percent less than market value regardless of how much is owed or how low the value may be.
