From Me To You... As a child summertime was full of endless possibilities. Playing with friends, reading, going on long family walks, visiting relatives, vacationing, sleeping in, and just relaxing. As a parent it seems to be full of finding things to do with the kids. Summer camps, activities, swimming, travel, more swimming, organizing school supplies for next year, day trips, museums, and more swimming. Also in Arizona the importance of staying cool either at home or anytime we have to leave the house is at the top of the list - hence all the swimming. This year my summer is being dubbed “The Summer of Moving Out” and with 3 kids going on to college or the start of their own independent lives, we have a busy time ahead. As I write this I am in Tennessee with one kid (ahem adult), buying furniture and helping her set up her life here. There are so many things to help her organize that it sometimes makes my head spin, I really think moving from state to state is more complicated than moving to America here from abroad.
Call now and Save!
Once this one is settled, it is on to the next location for a college drop off. I am looking forward to that one because of the weather. Summer in Washington state sounds a heck of a lot better than braving the Arizona heat. I can go for walks outside without applying factor 70 sunscreen, I will have to apply bug repellent though, so there is a trade off. After that we go to Hawaii. I know these kids have made some interesting choices... but who am I to argue with a week spent floating down a lazy river or touring a volcano? Although this summer is packed with exciting trips and activities, what I am really looking forward to is the fall. I can read, sleep in, go for long walks and reconnect with friends and family. As I think about it, it is beginning to sound a lot like the summers of my childhood, but thankfully without the specter of a new school term ahead of me!

Let Go Of The Past Letting go of things you’ve done or things that have been done to you in the past can be difficult. Like forgiveness, letting go means releasing yourself from emotional pain you live in by holding on to what happened. You’re not condoning what was done or giving anyone a pass; you’re simply deciding that you don’t want to live in that place of hurt anymore.
Letting go involves four components: 1. Change your self-talk. There’s no sense hanging on to something you can’t change. Come up with a phrase to say whenever a memory of the past is triggered, such as “let go”, “stay in the present” or “I am not my past.” 2. Focus on what you can control by working on mindfulness, or staying in the moment and enjoying what’s in front of you. Don’t judge the past by saying you failed at something so you
shouldn’t try again. Don’t make assumptions about the future by saying you’ll fail because you’re not capable, smart enough, etc. Don’t let preconceived notions get in your way. Instead, handle each situation in the now. 3. Take the perspective of a friend. If a friend did what you did, would you judge her so harshly? Likely not. You would probably give her the benefit of the doubt or say she did her best with what she had. Apply this to yourself instead of holding yourself to a different standard. 4. Try to find a lesson in what happened. Is there anything you learned, any takeaway from the experience? Not all situations have obvious lessons and some may not have a discernible lesson at all. It’s always worth seeking, though. Sometimes, the lesson is in what you learned about yourself. Life is too short to hold onto pain. Ending your self-inflicted suffering is within your control. Free yourself from your emotional chains by letting go of what’s holding you back. Be patient with yourself. You are reprogramming your brain, and this takes time and lots of practice. Online Deals
Shopping online can help make summer fun more affordable. You can find great online deals on beach and pool accessories, warm-weather clothing and more. However, to make sure you’re getting the best deals, you’ll need to follow some online shopping strategies. Check out these five tips to help you save time and money this summer. 1. If you’ve ever bought something during a Black Friday sale, you know how rewarding it can be to wait and get a big-ticket item at a bargain price. You can use this tactic year-round by becoming familiar with seasonal retail sales.According to NerdWallet, if you’re looking for fitness equipment for your home gym or TVs and electronics, then take advantage of discounts in January. If you need to replace your old mattress, wait and buy in
September around Labor Day. Make a list of items you’d like to purchase this year and research the best times to shop so you can get the best deal possible. 2. There are numerous shopping apps and tools that help ensure you’re getting what you need at the lowest price. Some even offer cash back for simply using the savings tool when you complete your purchase. 3. Have you ever gone to buy a plane ticket and realized that the price has gone up within a matter of hours? Dynamic pricing (also known as surge pricing, demand pricing and time-based pricing) is to blame. This strategy allows companies to adjust the price of an item in real time based on supply and demand. To avoid markups, delete your browser’s cookies or shop in a private window, especially when buying airline tickets or booking a hotel room. Also, if you don’t need an item urgently, leave it in your cart. You’ll likely get an email the same day or a day or two later that the item you were thinking of purchasing has had a price drop. 4. Are you using your cash-back rewards? If you have a cash-back credit card, you make back some of what you spent on your regular purchases like gas, groceries and household products. While it may not seem like a lot for individual purchases, cash-back rewards can quickly add up, so you can put that money in the bank or apply it toward other purchases. 5. You’ve probably been asked at grocery stores, clothing retailers and gas stations about joining the store’s loyalty and rewards program. These programs are generally free to sign up for, and you can even do it at checkout in most places that offer them. Simply input your phone number and/or email address and you’ll earn reward points or receive coupons and discounts for future purchases.

Cool It! As the summer cooling season gets underway, there are several practical and low-tech steps that homeowners can take to help improve the comfort of their indoor environment. Following are five tips that can help homeowners stay cool, get more value from their home’s cooling dollars and care for their home’s air. * Consider the heat source. The two most common paths for external heat to infiltrate a home are through the windows and via problems with attic ductwork. “Solar heat gain through windows is a primary source of heat gain, closely followed by attic ductwork,” says Tom Casey, an Owens Corning AirCare Contractor. “But when it comes to bang for the buck, attic issues are easier to resolve, are more affordable and may have a faster payback.” Assuring that a home’s attic has an adequate amount of attic insulation can help guard against warm attic air infiltrating into the conditioned part of the home. Conversely, in the winter, sufficient attic insulation can help safeguard against warm air from the living space escaping into the cold attic. Closing curtains and blinds or installing awnings can also help keep solar heat out of a home’s living area. * Size matters. Bigger is not better when it comes to a home’s HVAC Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine
system. Proper sizing of a home’s comfort system refers not only to the condenser unit that powers air through the home, but the system of ducts that deliver air to each room. A highefficiency system will not deliver its value if ducts in the attic are leaky, loosely connected or have developed holes and tears. EnergyStar reports that an average home loses up to 30% of the air that moves through its duct system due to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts. * Service regularly. Regular maintenance by a qualified technician - even when the system seems to be operating properly - can help protect the longevity of a homeowner’s investment in a high-efficiency system. During the visit, the technician should ask the homeowner about any unusual noises or smells, as well as any comfort issues in specific parts of the house - such as a room that is always too warm or cold. It’s essential that the technician measures airflow through a home’s ductwork because inadequate airflow is a major culprit when it comes to efficiency. “If the airflow isn’t right, nothing else will be right,” says Tom Casey, an Owens Corning AirCare Contractor. * Consider a home’s age. Homes built even a few decades ago were not built to the same energy codes as today’s homes. The result is a gap between today’s high-performance heating and cooling equipment and the home’s attic ductwork. “Basic, low-tech craftsmanship can either make or break performance in terms of good duct design or installation of proper insulation,” says Casey. He notes that while homes must be built to code, the building code represents the bare minimum requirement for system performance. * Avoid making equipment work harder than necessary. Don’t plant landscaping near the outside condenser unit. The area around and atop the unit should be free of obstacles. And be sure to replace your HVAC system’s air filter as directed by the manufacturer.

Safe Travels
It’s time to start looking forward to your summer travel plans. As you make your packing lists and research the sites and activities for your destinations, don’t forget to review digital safety rules. Check out these five tips to avoid security risks and keep you and your family safe. 1. Public Wi-Fi is great for staying connected on the go, but it also allows bad actors the opportunity to place malware on your device and access your identity and finances. Be proactive and use a virtual private network (VPN) when connecting to public WiFi.
accessing these documents on your phone, make sure your phone is locked with a complex password. 3. It’s fun to share your fun moments from your vacation with friends and family, but what you share on social media may make you vulnerable to cyberattacks and even physical ones. For example, sharing where you’re planning to travel or announcing your location while on vacation creates opportunities for someone to find you or break into your home while you’re away. 4. There are plenty of travel scams on the internet. As you look for flights, rental cars and accommodations, do so through a legitimate, trusted site. Remember, you’re entering sensitive information about your family’s identities and financial information.
2. While it might be reassuring to carry physical copies of your important documents like your passports and vaccine cards, you’re leaving yourself and your kids vulnerable to identity theft. Instead of carrying paper copies, store copies of your important documents online digitally in a secure app. Since you’ll likely be
5. When making purchases during your vacation, use your credit card instead of your debit card. Credit cards tend to offer more financial protection than debit cards, and if you spot a suspicious purchase on your recent transactions or latest statement, you’ll likely be able to get your money back.

Balance
As you age, it may be challenging to keep your life feeling both balanced and positive. Keeping up with your own health and nutrition, changes to your professional career, and spending time with friends and family can all lead to stress, which may have a negative impact on your overall feeling of well-being. You can support a well-balanced lifestyle by making more positive choices around nutrition and daily activity. Here are five things you can try to improve the balance in your daily life. 1. Sneak in more protein throughout your day Up to 44% of adults over 60 do not meet minimum protein requirements, according to The Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging. You can increase your daily protein intake with snacks like nuts, seeds and Greek yogurt, but it can still be challenging to get enough protein through normal diet. 2. Try new recipes Visit your local grocery store or farmers market regularly to stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables, which provide vitamins, fiber and other nutrients that your body needs. Have fun

experimenting with new recipes using these fresh ingredients. 3. Explore the outdoors Fresh air can feel invigorating, and getting exposure to even a small amount of sunshine every day gives you vitamin D, which is known to help boost your mood and energy. A simple way to enjoy the outdoors is to take a daily walk, but if you want more variety, consider new hobbies that bring you out into Mother Nature. Taking part in outdoor activities can make a real difference when it comes to finding balance and enjoyment each day. 4. Plan social times Having strong social ties and meaningful relationships increases quality of life and adds balance and meaning to your days. It’s not about quantity of connections, it’s about quality. Make time to socialize with friends, families and people in your community. 5. Prioritize rest A balanced day isn’t just about eating well and moving your body. You need to make rest a top priority, especially as you age, so your mind and body can properly recover. This means getting at least seven hours of sleep a night, as well as taking breaks during the day if needed. There’s nothing wrong with a quick nap, so listen to your body.

Legal Advice
MAKE A WILL, NOT A MISTAKE While there are many forms of estate planning documents available on line, there are just as many ways to make mistakes that could cause problems for you and your loved ones.
Original documents are important. Financial institutions want to see original powers of attorney and Wills. The court process to probate a copy of a Will can be double the time and cost of probating an original. Legal terms have specific meaning. The term “heir,” when meaning “descendants,” could result in unintended rights to a spouse or sibling. Powers of attorney should not be contingent on you being incapacitated. Once you are found
Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine
incapacitated, you lose your legal rights to handle financial decisions. You should not have to lose your rights, when you just need help on the phone or going to the bank. Health care powers of attorney should cover mental health as well as medical health care. Avoid court intervention by having a complete health care power of attorney. If you have a revocable trust, be sure your assets are titled in the trust or made payable to a trust. If you do not have a trust, be sure you fully utilize beneficiary designations in order to avoid probate.
