From Me To You... With the rise in services like Netflix and Hulu, it is easier to catch your favorite show and watch at your leisure than ever before. This has also led to the phenomenon of binge watching - sitting through a season or series at a time. In reality I have been doing my own form of binge watching for years, turning on House Hunters or Friends every night.
of disasters also became somewhat comical when viewed that way. I mean, how many horrible things happened to that cast and the poor patients they treated? Subway pole pinning two strangers together, a man attacked by his girlfriend’s lion, near drownings, plane crashes, car crashes, it makes you think twice about visiting Seattle.
There are advantages to screening shows this way. You can fully immerse yourself in the story and follow complicated plot lines more easily. If you are watching a show you have seen before then multitasking comes into play. For example as I write this I am streaming The Big Bang Theory in the background. Bazinga!
Shows like Grace & Frankie and Santa Clarita Diet are released all at once. You can see the whole thing as quickly or slowly as you want. It makes the gaps between seasons harder to wait for but I guess you can’t have everything.
Something that occurred to me is that the way shows are written will have to evolve as we turn more to binge watching. I was watching Grey’s Anatomy and when I saw it originally the plot lines made sense. However, once I started watching one episode after another, the stories seemed to speed up. Relationships blossomed, evolved and ended in a matter of hours, not weeks as I remembered it. The sheer number
I have also come to realise that the significance of the show you pick has increased in importance. If you dip in and out of a show once a week for half an hour or an hour it is not too much of an investment of your time. Now with binge watching, there better be something that makes one series worth the days or weeks you will be spending together. Something light and silly or a drama that pulls you in perhaps. Maybe a historical romance, you know so you can learn something while you fritter away all those hours. I was planning on starting Game of Thrones next week but with all the backlash over the last couple of episodes I am rethinking that choice. Which shows do you love to watch? Email me with your favorite shows that you think are worth binge watching. I look forward to your recommendations! Catherine Uretsky Editor, Viva magazine catherine@estrellapartners.com 623-594-9283

Moving Made Simple Moving is an exciting time as you look forward to settling into your new home sweet home. However, it’s also a stressful time as you try to move your belongings from one place to another. Here are some top tips and tricks to take the stress out of moving so you can look forward to settling into your new home: Sort and label boxes wisely: Not only will being organized help you pack faster, it will also streamline the unpacking process at your new place. Label boxes by item type and and room. For example, “kitchen: pots and pans” You might also consider using colored markers for each room type or adding a shape, such as a star or triangle, for easy visual sorting. Keep clothes hanging: It’s a pain to have to unhang clothes, fold and then rehang on hangers
when you unpack. Instead, when clothes are still in your closet, group by four or five and use a garbage bag to protect and hold them together. Open the plastic bag and insert clothes from the bottom up, then tie the top around the hangers. Voila! Keep important documents with you: Whether you’re moving by yourself or hiring movers, there are plenty of boxes that need to make it from point A to point B. A few things should never be in those boxes, mostly because they aren’t worth the risk of getting lost or damaged. These include personal documents such as birth certificates, bank records and wills. These should be kept with you in a safe spot at all times. Moving can be hectic, but these tips will help limit the chaos and simmer the stress so you can worry less and be excited more. Remember, enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

Viva Values MAKING MEMORIES
Wherever you go, whatever you are doing, the impulse is to take photographs…...sometimes LOTS of them! These are treasured by all because they tell our story, show our heritage, our family, friends, adventures and experiences. So many residents of PebbleCreek are taking wonderful travel vacations to new, exciting places or just enjoying friends and family throughout the year. Capturing and preserving these special events is priceless. Whether you are using a camera, I-phone, I-pad or other types of equipment, the result is a digital image that now needs to be saved or shared. What are some options? In the 1960’s, Kodak came out with color film. At that time, my family took an extensive trip to Europe and we took many photographs. But, the emulsion (the chemical on the paper) was not stable and all the photographs have since faded to unrecognizable images. Then Kodak got it right and we all started printing 4x6 images by the hundreds. We framed them, enlarged them for the wall, and sent them to friends and family. Now, paper and ink are archival and will last for 100 years or more. Today, with digital capture, all of these photos are on our phones, I-pads and computers. We share them through e-mail, social media and other digital forms. Will we be able to see and enjoy
Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine
them in posterity? What about making a book to share your favorite images from a recent trip, a special family gathering, or simply the beautiful cacti and flowers in Arizona. You will learn to be a better photographer as you download each image and, with a discerning eye, choose maybe 30 images from a trip or event. You will find you no longer need to take 100’s of photos vacation but will begin to think about how you want to display or share the image as you take each one. You will be surprised at how your composition and lighting capabilities will improve. Photobook companies (i.e. Shutterfly or Costco Photos) offer a wide variety of options for your desired final product. For images of children, you may choose a 5x5” image book, or larger depending if they are closeup or you have captured them in activities. The companies give you templates that allow multiple images per page, different sizes, or maybe just a large photo on each page with optional captions or description. You have choices of type of paper, soft or hard covers, lay flat or traditional pages. The books usually go up to 11x13” in size and some specialty companies will even customize the photobook. This can be a fun project not only for your personal enjoyment but make great gifts and is a fabulous way to share and preserve these memories because they will never fade! Mental Health & Genetics Mental illness is relentless. Patients and their caregivers face stressful days and restless nights - filled with profound physical and emotional challenges. For Brandon B.*, a patient with bipolar disorder, life was like being on a roller coaster, rotating mercilessly out of control. Mental illness is pervasive too. Brandon is one of millions of Americans - over 46 million, in fact - whose lives are impacted by mental health conditions. That equals one in every five adults 18 years of age and older in the U.S. who suffers from mental illness, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). The burden of mental illness is further ominous when viewed through the lens of its financial consequences. According to an editorial in the
American Journal of Psychiatry, serious mental illnesses cost patients more than $193 billion per year in lost earnings. The overall health care delivery system is impacted as well. The NIMH reports that mental health care expenditures are the third most costly medical condition, behind heart conditions and trauma, and tied with cancer. Globally, the World Health Organization projects that depression will become the largest health burden by 2030.
Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine
In spite of these dynamics, there is reason for optimism for improved treatment of mental illness and positive patient outcomes. Working with his doctor and eventually finding the medication that worked best for him, Brandon was able to slowly work his way out of the depression that was crippling his life. “Any time you are dealing with mental health, there can be trial and error in order to identify the medication that works best for you,” says Brandon. “It took me five to six months working with my doctor and trying two medications before I finally found the right one. I was lucky in a sense. For some patients it can take years before they find the medication that actually works.” What helped Brandon break the churn of failed medication trials that many mental health patients experience? He found the answers he hoped for in genetic testing. Through a simple cheek-swab genetic test Brandon’s personal genetic markers were identified. The test, administered at his doctor’s office, analyzed Brandon’s genes from two critical standpoints: the effect a drug would have on his body; and how his body would metabolize the same drug. Ultimately, the Genomind test provided the precision information that was needed to help his doctor select an appropriate and safe drug for Brandon’s bipolar disorder. The science of genetic testing is steadily influencing the paradigm in the personalized treatment of mental illness. More and more doctors view genetic testing as a valuable component in their clinical toolkit.

Oral Health As You Age
We all know brushing our teeth twice a day is crucial to keeping our smile bright, but most of us probably don’t understand how dental hygiene can impact our overall health, especially as we age. Going to the dentist is one of the most important things we can do for our health. Alison Komarek, DDS, with UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement, answers some of the most pressing questions older adults have regarding their oral health.
Q: How often do I need to go to the dentist? A: Adults, especially those 65 and older, should get to the dentist every six months to one year. Routine dental exams are critical, as they allow your dental team to develop a baseline for your overall oral health, so they can spot changes as you age. Dental X-rays may be taken. These are useful in helping to detect cavities or other areas of concern that are not noticeable by looking in the mouth. Even if you have no remaining teeth, routine X-rays are helpful to evaluate the remaining bone and soft tissues. A head and neck screening for oral cancers is also recommended. Oral cancer primarily affects
older adults and routine screenings are the best way to help ensure early detection. Q: What is gum disease and is it treatable? A: Gum disease, an infection of tissues that surround and support teeth, is one of the most common oral health issues facing older adults. Gum disease can be hard to detect, as it is often painless. Signs of gum disease include: * Gums that bleed easily, or are red and swollen * Receding gum line * Loose or sensitive teeth The earlier your dentist can catch this manageable disease, the better. Early-stage gum disease is generally straightforward to manage through professional cleanings, while late-stage gum disease can be more complex. Q: My mouth has gotten drier as I age, what is that all about? A: You’re not alone here - dry mouth, or xerostomia, affects 30 percent of adults age 65 and older, according to the American Dental Association. Dry mouth is often caused by medication you may be taking; ask your doctor or pharmacist if xerostomia is a side effect of one or more of your medications. Bottom line: Adhering to a consistent dental hygiene routine and seeing the dentist regularly are some of the best things you can do for your oral health. In addition, if you see or feel something out of the ordinary in your mouth, call your dentist and make a dental appointment as soon as possible.

Saving $ On Healthcare
Rising premiums and different levels of coverage can make health care costs seem very confusing. Here are 5 simple ideas that could help you save on your health care costs. 1. Plan for medical bills. Just as you would ask a mechanic to estimate the cost of service on your car ahead of time, don’t be afraid to ask providers what services will cost. Many providers will work with you to arrange a payment plan when a medical bill is not covered by your insurance, or if you are uninsured or have a high deductible. Don’t be afraid to negotiate 2. Save money on prescription medications. If you are uninsured, or your insurance doesn’t cover certain prescription medications, an Inside Rx card may be an option for you. The card is not insurance but is a free discount prescription card that provides deep savings on select brand
and generic medications. There’s even a card for your pet’s prescriptions. Next time you’re picking up a prescription, download the card on your phone and show it to your pharmacist to see if you can benefit and how much you could save. Eligibility requirements and a complete list of the medications offered through the program can be found at InsideRx. com. 3. Shop around. You could save money by comparing the price of medications in pharmacies near you. Inside Rx compares the prices in locations near you to help find the best deal for your medication at a pharmacy close to you if you are using the discount card. Also, discuss with your doctor if switching to a generic medication is an option for you; this could save you money when purchasing your medications. 4. Take advantage of wellness plans. If your employer offers a wellness plan, participate. You may even get perks such as partial coverage of gym memberships. Talk to your employer’s human resources office about health savings or other plans that may be available to save you out-of-pocket costs. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to make sure you understand how the plans work. 5. Don’t delay treatment. If you’ve been diagnosed with a condition that requires treatment or medication, don’t put off starting your treatment. Talk with your doctor about any financial concerns so together you can create a plan to improve your health at a cost you can afford.

Digital Decluttering There’s an aspect of tidying up that most of us may be forgetting: our digital clutter. From Christmas pictures that are still taking up memory on your phone, to hundreds of old texts that are eating up your gigabytes, there are plenty of things you can digitally declutter, and once you get started, you’ll be amazed at how zen you’ll feel.
1. Organize your photos: Photos are notorious for taking up a ton of space, and can add up quickly if you don’t regularly back them up. To get started, find a free cloud-based service to help organize your pictures. As you upload, make sure to select “delete after uploading” to kill two birds with one stone and save a little time. 2. Delete old texts: Text conversations can pile up fast and take up valuable storage, especially if they contain images or videos. There’s no need
Freedom
to keep unimportant ones around. As you go through your messages, save only the vital conversations you’d need to keep as a record or for reference, otherwise, send them to the trash! 3.Tidy up your email: Tidy up your inbox by taking some time to delete all junk and trash messages, and then organize further by adding folders where you can store like-minded emails. 4. Delete unused apps: Apps not only take up your device’s memory, but can make for a cluttered screen too. If you find yourself consistently scrolling left and right trying to locate an app, that may be a sign that you have too many, or just need a little organization. Pare down your apps by deleting the ones that you never use. Then move the ones you use most frequently to the first screen, leaving lesser-used apps toward the back. You can also group similar apps into folders to further clear up your screen. 5. Clean up your desktop: Finally, find a quick 15 minutes to clean up your computer’s desktop. Having rogue folders labeled “miscellaneous” and random icons cluttering up your screen can make it difficult to find what you actually need at a moment’s notice. So this season, when you’re gearing up to spring clean your home, don’t forget to digitally declutter too!

Child Hunger
Did you know more than 13 million youth in the U.S. don’t know where their next meal is coming from? This is especially true during the summer, when children and teens don’t have access to free or reduced-cost lunches or breakfasts offered during the school year. In fact, over 22 million kids receive free or reduced-cost lunch during the school year, yet only 3.8 million kids have access during the summer, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. How can you help children struggling with hunger? Here are some concrete steps. Give to a food pantry. Find out what your local food pantry needs. Typically, they need items such as canned proteins like tuna, salmon, chicken, beef or
beans; peanut butter; plus canned fruits and vegetables without added salt or sugar. Ask if they accept fresh produce and milk, as this is often what is most lacking in the diets of children struggling with hunger. Organize a food drive with your house of worship, civic group or neighborhood to maximize your efforts. If you can’t donate food, ask your local food pantry if you can donate time. Even sorting and organizing food can be helpful. Support programs that feed children healthy meals. Every summer, millions of children and teens who rely on free and reduced-cost lunch programs at school are at an increased risk of going hungry. The Y’s Summer Food Program helps fill that gap and is made possible with support from the Walmart Foundation. Depending on your community, the program may be hosted at local YMCA locations, or at parks and low-income apartment complexes, so transportation is not a barrier. You may not spot the child hunger right in your neighborhood, but what you do in your community makes a difference. Visit theyfeedskids.org to learn about resources to help kids, discover healthy affordable recipes and find ways to make a difference in a child’s life.

Headache Help Nearly 40 million Americans experience migraine and the World Health Organization lists headache disease as the third leading cause of productivity loss due to disability. “People often underestimate the pain they experience and think their only choice is to endure,” said Dr. Seymour Diamond, executive chair and founder of the National Headache Foundatio. “There is nothing normal about pain in your head, yet even today after treating headache and migraine for over 60 years, I still see doctors dismissing their patients’ symptoms.” It can be easy to dismiss a headache as normal, but normal shouldn’t be confused with common. Headaches can also be caused by your daily habits that may be easily removed from your routine or can help your doctor develop a treatment plan.
Know your headache and migraine triggers
* Food is one of the more common triggers, from smoked foods to alcohol and avocados, that is often overlooked. Keep a food journal to see if you can identify patterns and triggers * Weather changes, including high- and lowpressure systems * For women, menstruation and hormone fluctuations or imbalance * Screen time * Stress and a compromised sleep schedule Headaches or uncharacteristic migraine symptoms can indicate you need medical attention. People are often reluctant to call their healthcare provider or go to the ER because they don’t want to arrive only to learn that nothing out of the ordinary is wrong. Diamond advises, “If your symptoms are out of the ordinary for you, absolutely seek medical attention from a specialist and get help. Your headache or migraine should not keep you from living your life to its fullest.” Common signs that you should seek medical help for your headaches * You have more than the occasional headache (more than twice a week) * Your headache persists, and continues to get worse or won’t stop * Your headaches interfere with your normal activities of daily life * You find yourself taking pain relievers more than two days a week * You take over-the-counter medications for headache relief, but the recommended dosage is not adequate Headache and migraine are serious conditions and you shouldn’t be afraid to talk to your doctor.
