From Me To You... There is something about a front porch that has always called to me. A place to sit and sip, take in the world and let the neighborhood get acquainted with you. It screams Americana to me. One of the iconic things about this country that I was quite surprised did not exist as much as I had thought.
I always imagined that when I bought a house it would have a front porch, complete with a swing, comfy cushions, a flag waving proudly on a pole, a dog curled up at my feet while I sipped coffee and waved my children off to school in the morning. None of that ever happened. Except the coffee - I have sipped a lot of coffee in the mornings as I scrambled through the chaos that is getting children ready for school. Back to the iconic image idea. As a foreigner moving to this country I imagined many things that I would find. The vastness of the country that one is very true - this country is bigger than some continents. As a young adult I travelled across country by Amtrak. If you ever have the chance, travelling by rail is a wonderful way to
see and appreciate this beautiful country. Its states are as different as countries and are worth taking the time to visit. Opportunity is another iconic ideal that many people come here for, streets not quite paved with gold but at least the ability to find your place and do well if you try hard. To some extent that is true, I have done well and it was due to a lot of hard work, but that is changing for our children. Despite their endeavors and opportunity the sheer cost of everything is holding them back. Many young adults are either foregoing college because of the cost, or if they do go they are crippled with debt that they will most likely carry well into their 50’s. Families are forced to welcome their offspring back into their homes so they can survive. Not the image I carried in my backpack 27 years ago when I first landed at JFK. Then we moved west. Into the Wild Wild West land of cowboys and rugged desert. Surprisingly there were more front porches out here than I expected, still not at my house though... I had heard that there were Coyotes and Roadrunners to be found out here. Images of large brightly colored creatures zooming around dodging cunning animals wielding TNT danced through my head. Imagine my surprise to see the diminutive brown bird scurrying across the street one morning without a Meep-Meep to be heard. That was a Roadrunner? Wow, sadly disappointing. Now the coyotes, those I have found to be as wiley and scrawny as in the cartoons, but thankfully with less access to explosives. On Our Cover
Pebblecreek Quilters enjoy not only the creative process of making a beautifully sewn project, they also enjoy giving and doing for others. The group spends every third Saturday wrking on a variety of needed items for the following designated West Valley groups: New Life Center, PC Pet Companions Club, Hospice of the Valley, Ryan’s House, Natalie’s House and Abrazo Hospital. In addition to these organizations, members also make items for their own charities. For example, Priscilla Naworski’s goal last year was to make one baby quilt per week to be given to her church’s work in the valley. This winter, Geri Johnson and Pam Scandore set a goal of making 300 dresses from the Heart that will be given to the PC Community Church for their boxes that are given to Operation Christmas Child this cooming winter.
During 2018, 218 quilts were made and given to designated community organizatioons. Other sewing projects thaat were doonated included activity mats for dementia patients (17), dog beds (189), Hope Bags for the New Life Center (55), Walker Caddies (17), and Hope Bags with toiletries (34). In addition, 26 quilts were given to veterans who live in PebbleCreek during the Veterans Day celebration. There were a total of 624 items made and donaated by the members. Any residents of PebbleCreek that are interested in coming too the Diamondback Room in the Creative Arts Center on the third Saturday of the month are invited to bring their sewing machine and join in the fun of making and giving to others. Viva Values Enjoying our Local Park System
hiking with the PebbleCreek hiking club is an ideal way to enjoy our local parks with friends who enjoy the out of doors. In addition to hiking, depending on the facility, visitors can camp, horseback ride, fish, bike, shoot and try their hand at archery.
Sometimes you just have to leave the manicured landscape behind and experience some natural beauty. And PebbleCreek is ideally located to do just that. The Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department has 13 park facilities throughout the region that offer challenge, adventure and a wide range of outdoor opportunity. Estrella Mountain Regional Park and White Tank Mountain Regional Park are both within a 15 or 20 minute drive of PebbleCreek. The White Tanks trails tend to make all of the surrounding development just disappear while the Estrella trails offer views of the valley. There is actually a Maricopa County library right outside the entrance to the White Tanks so there are plenty of educational opportunities on that property… and the Estrella rangers also offer many planned programs – like hikes to watch the sun rise or enjoy a full moon. If you want to catch up on everything that is happening at the parks, their informative website is Maricopacountyparks.net. You can also follow Maricopa County Parks on Facebook. The trails can be easy… but they can also be CHALLENGING. Like – get lost and feel a little frightened challenging. I have had both very easy and tough experiences and am now very careful to take plenty of water and a phone – and to heed the advice of park rangers. I often venture out on my own, but for some PebbleCreek residents,

Another treasure is Lake Pleasant Regional Park. Located a bit further off the beaten path from PebbleCreek, it is a 45 minute drive. But once you get there, the 10,000 acre lake is a haven for water sport lovers. Folks jet ski, motor boat, swim, paddle board, kayak…. float in inflatable floaties and life preservers… a little of everything. There is a marina where people store their boats and even a Dillon’s restaurant right on the water. As I type, most Maricopa County parks charge an entrance fee of $7 per vehicle and many outdoor enthusiasts will find it worth their while to get the annual pass for $85 (note that some PebbleCreek residents, 65 and older, will qualify for a senior discount on the annual pass!). Why I Grill
Why do Americans love grilling so much? The reasons are wide ranging. Some grill to relax. The backyard is their escape, and the flame calms them. Others barbecue for nostalgia. The grill is a time machine to the best childhood moments. Many grill for the sheer joy of cooking. The sizzle on the grates, the smell rising to the sky, the juices dripping on the coals. As we enter peak grilling season and celebrate National Barbecue Month in May, the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association looks to grilling celebrities to discover why we love gathering around the flame and to ultimately encourage everyone to grill this summer and beyond. 1) Boog Powell, I grill for nostalgia: Orioles legend and professional barbecuer Boog Powell loves to grill because of a childhood experience. “I started grilling when I was 10 years old when my dad, brother and I made a big slab of ribs on a homemade grill on a family camping trip. It was probably the best ribs and the best barbecue that I’ve had in my life. I have been hooked on barbecue since then, and I still love it, more now than ever before,” adds Powell. 2) Tobias Dorzon, I grill for my health: Tobias Dorzon, former professional football player, professional chef and champion of Food Network’s “Guy’s Grocery Games” grills for the health benefits and delicious flavor. Dorzon notes, “Grilling is a healthier alternative because it burns the fat off meats and it uses less oil. Plus, grilling takes less time to cook and it keeps all the nutrients and flavors throughout your food.” 3) Christie Vanover, I grill for fresh air: Christie Vanover, owner and operator of Girls Can Grill, loves grilling because it allows her to spend time outside. Vanover says, “My motto is ‘Anything that can be cooked in the kitchen can be cooked on a grill.’ I grill year-round, because I love being outdoors and soaking up the fresh air.” For more reasons, tips and tricks, recipes and information on grilling, visit www.whyigrill.org.

Lawn Care
Let’s face it. We all want a beautiful carpet of green to create the backdrop for entertaining, playing and relaxing. However, what you may not realize is the benefits of a beautiful lawn go well beyond its aesthetics. Well-maintained lawns support healthy community environments. For instance, grass captures dust, smoke particles and other pollutants to help keep air cleaner. Plus, grasses absorb carbon dioxide and break it down into oxygen and carbon. Healthy lawns also protect important water resources. A thriving lawn can help absorb unhealthy runoff that would otherwise reach water sources used by communities. Additionally, lawns are natural coolants. Lawns can be 31 degrees cooler than asphalt and 20 degrees cooler than bare soil. Communities that house healthy lawns, parks and commercially landscaped spaces just look nicer and feel more welcoming. Properly managed green spaces also help minimize the growth of weeds that can cause allergies, making it difficult for residents to enjoy time outdoors. Additionally, studies show that public green spaces can reduce stress, lower health care costs and improve quality of life.
Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine
Noise reduction is another big benefit for communities with healthy landscapes, particularly important in urban settings. Studies show that lawns and landscapes can reduce noise levels by 20 to 30 percent over hard surfaces like concrete and pavement. More than just providing a quiet, calm space, healthy landscapes make communities safer, too. Neighborhoods with tree-lined streets and larger yards have reduced crime. Get a head start on smart lawn care with these fast tips from the experts at NALP: 1. Daily watering is not necessary. Instead, give your lawn a deep soak every couple of days, so the moisture can penetrate the soil down to the roots. 2. When mowing, never remove more than onethird of a grass blade for a finished height of 2 to 3 inches. 3. Keep grass clippings on the lawn after mowing. They break down and provide nitrogen and nutrients to the soil for a healthier lawn. 4. Change directions when mowing. The pattern change will control coarse grass and create more even surfaces. Downsizing
Sometimes downsizing is inspired by a move and other times it’s simply a proactive effort to keep a home clutter-free and make things easier for the next chapter of life. Although it can feel overwhelming, with a few smart steps, the process can be easy and even enjoyable. Use these eight tips to get started: Sort it out: Creating a system before organizing and downsizing can help the process go smoother. This can be as simple as getting large boxes and labeling them with Keep, Donate, Gift or Throw Away. Enlist some help: Ask your spouse or kids to help you go through your items and decide what to keep and what to get rid of. Some items that you find difficult to part with may not be things that your children want: consider parting with the items your kids aren’t interested in inheriting. Think about safety: Whether you’re moving into a new home or preparing to age in place, it’s important to consider safety factors as you age.
Clutter is a trip hazard for seniors, so keep this in mind as you go through items. It might be time to get rid of throw rugs, exposed cords and cut down on end table clutter to make room for a lamp that provides extra light. Consider your new space: If you’re moving, evaluate how much space you will have in your new home to help decide what to keep. That massive claw-foot couch might not be suitable for a modest living room. Memory care concerns: If a loved one is moving into a memory care community you want the new space to be as comfortable and familiar as possible. “Set up the new apartment as close to the layout at home as possible. For example, put the nightstand on the same side of the bed and decorate the room with familiar items,” she suggests. Peruse paperwork: Take this opportunity to get paperwork in order. It’s also smart to have electronic records of these types of documents and have a conversation with loved ones who need to be aware of their existence. No matter the specific reason, it can feel great to downsize and organize your belongings.

Hair You Go
Did you know that what you eat affects your hair? While there are many possible causes for hair loss - stress, the environment, health problems - achieving thick, full and healthy hair ultimately starts with your diet. Research shows that certain nutrients, including iron, zinc, B vitamins, vitamin C and omega-3s are essential to healthy-growing hair, while lack of these nutrients and certain inflammatory foods can lead to hair loss and slower-growing hair.
you have dandruff, slow-growing hair or hair loss, low levels of zinc might be the culprit. Biotin is the most well-known B vitamin that helps keep the hair thick and healthy. A deficiency can lead to hair loss. Additional B vitamins, including and folate (B9) also support healthy hair growth, as B vitamins create red blood cells, which carry oxygen and nutrients to the scalp and hair follicles. Omega-3s are essential fatty acids that are anti-inflammatory powerhouses. Since your body does not produce them naturally, you must consume them through your diet. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect against oxidative stress caused by free radicals, which can hamper hair growth. It helps you absorb iron from plant-based foods, and supports the body in collagen formation, which is required for optimal hair growth.
Integrative nutrition health coach Maria Marlowe has partnered with Nioxin to spread the word about how nutrition contributes to achieving a beautiful mane. Here are her best tips about what to eat - and what to avoid - for optimal hair health. What to avoid: Sugar and high-glycemic foods produce inflammation in the body. Healthcare Wishes Imagine you are in an accident or a sudden illness leaves you unable to speak for yourself. Your loved one or caregiver may be faced with a difficult decision about whether to continue lifesaving measures. How does that person know what to do?
Discuss, decide and document. These are three important steps to take to ensure your future care preferences are known and remove a burden from your family. Planning for major injuries or sudden illness may feel awkward, but timely conversations with family members can ensure your care preferences are honored and that your caregivers don’t have to guess what you might want. “It’s simpler than you think to get started,” said Dr. Stephanie Peterson, a senior medical director at Optum. Here are a few tips from Peterson: 1) Choose an advocate. This should be someone who knows you well, is calm in a crisis, understands your preferences, is not afraid to ask questions of care providers
14 Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine
and will advocate on your behalf.
2) Talk with your advocate and doctor about your future care preferences. Let your advocate and doctors know what’s most important to you in life. What are the activities and abilities that make life most worth living for you? What are the things that give you comfort when you’re sick? When, if ever, should your advocate decide that it’s time to “let go”? And who else should they include in that decision? 3) Write it down. Formalize your decisions by putting them in writing. 4) Give copies of your plan to your advocate, family members and doctors. Make sure they are aware of your plan, and take some time to go over the document with them. “I have seen firsthand the sense of peace, calm and satisfaction families experience when they know their loved one’s wishes have been fulfilled,” Peterson said. Advance care planning improves quality of life and reduces anxiety. “Don’t make people guess what you want. Make your future care preferences known.”

Volunteer Vacations Looking for a vacation that’s not only fun, but also meaningful? Wish you had more time to volunteer in a way that really makes a difference? There’s a simple solution: Plan your next vacation around a great volunteer opportunity. Whether on your own or with the entire family, volunteering on vacation is a wonderful way to explore a favorite destination or someplace you’ve always wanted to go, while contributing to a cause you care about. With the Travel for Good program from Travelocity, you can easily explore volunteer activities in popular vacation destinations all over the U.S. Most activities require anywhere from just a few hours to a whole day. Here are just a few of the types of opportunities you can find on their interactive volunteer map.
Freedom
Concerned about hunger? Visit Washington, D.C., to sort food donations, stock shelves and assemble nutritious food packs for elementary school children at Food for Others. Volunteers age 12 and older can sign up for weekday shifts, making it a great opportunity to teach your tween or teen children about how they can make a difference. Care about animals? You can spend time at The Nashville Zoo, one of Tennessee’s most popular attractions, to enjoy the wildlife while assisting at one-time volunteer opportunities for special events like the adults-only Brew at the Zoo and holiday-related celebrations for Easter, Halloween and more. Passionate about the environment? Plan a trip to California to volunteer with Surfrider Foundation, which organizes regular beach cleanups around the Bay Area. Or head farther south to help out at San Diego Coastkeeper, an organization that helps make sure San Diego’s waters are safe and clean. It’s easy to locate nonprofits in need in some of the top cities across the country by checking out www.travelocity.com/travelforgood. Make your next vacation both memorable and meaningful by finding the right volunteer opportunity for you.

Carbs On The Go Quality carbohydrates like whole-grain breads, milk, yogurt, fruits and legumes are an important part of a balanced diet, especially for children and teens. For adults, reducing the amount of empty carbs you eat can be a great way to meet your personal wellness goals. It’s important to replace those carbs with lean meats, healthy fats and nutrient-dense vegetables. Here are a few simple suggestions to eat on the go while still following your current diet. Keto-style A ketogenic diet, also known as keto, is a popular diet that balances protein, fat and carbs roughly in the following breakdown: * 10 percent or less of their calories from carbs
Caesar, oil and vinegar or Chipotle Southwest. Carb-conscious
If keto sounds too ambitious for you, there are other simple ways to reduce carbs in your diet, like asking for a lettuce wrap instead of a sandwich. Quality carbs Trying to improve the overall nutrition quality in your diet, but don’t want to cut carbs? Try these easy swaps: * Swap white bread for wheat. Select whole grain-certified 9-Grain Wheat * Swap sweet sauce for savory. Try mustard, oil and vinegar or mayo * Swap sweet drinks for water. Choose bottled water or unsweetened fountain drinks
* 70 to 80 percent of their calories from fat * 10 to 20 percent of their calories from protein One good way to follow a ketogenic diet is with a salad starting with a lean meat such as rotisseriestyle chicken, turkey breast, steak or roast beef. Add in some veggies like lettuce, spinach and onions. Then top it all off with a dressing that has less than 2 grams of carbs like ranch, savory

Confidence Boost The power of music extends beyond just a good beat to listen to. It can be a source of inspiration for new ideas or serve as an instant confidence booster at times when you need a little push. Whatever the reason may be for pressing play, music can inspire you to get out of your comfort zone and try something new. To get aspiring musicians and fans alike started with their musical explorations, Total Wireless is sharing four tips on how to find total confidence through the power of music. 1. Learn a new instrument: Joining a music class with a friend is a great way to feel more confident about your new venture. Whether you’re picking up your first instrument or are already a skilled musician, challenge yourself to learn something new and push yourself out of your comfort zone. It can feel intimidating to know where to begin,
so use your smartphone to do a little research before taking the next step.
2. Make a confidence-boosting playlist: When you’re having a tough day, use the power of music to give yourself an instant confidence boost. Using your favorite music-streaming app on your smartphone, compile a playlist of your favorite songs for a quick pick-me-up wherever you are! 3. Discover new music: Diversify your song library and discover new music by using your smartphone to explore new artists and genres. Get started by searching for artists that are similar to a few of your current favorites, or select a random playlist on your favorite music streaming app and see what new artists are recommended for you. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even take your music exploration a step further and check out a local band at their next show. 4. Take the stage: Resolve to broaden your horizons and take that next big step to center stage. If you’re a longtime musician, aim to book a gig at the largest venue you’ve ever performed at, or if you’re new to the craft, find the courage to get up during an open mic and test out a new song. While this can be intimidating, just go for it and remind yourself that “you got this.” Whether you’re an experienced musician or a playlist professional, remember to get out there and try something new!
