From Me To You... “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.” - Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities Seems somewhat appropriate right now, doesn’t it? I have sat in front of my computer for a few days now, thinking of what to write to you. I have a quote swimming in my brain, “The last 24 hours have been a heck of a year!” And that sums up our lives. Things are developing and moving so rapidly that it is hard to keep up. As I write this our children are at home for the foreseeable future, and most of us are working from home. By the time you read this in a couple of weeks I anticipate the whole country will be on lockdown. The irony of my last article is not lost one me. When I said I welcomed change I did not mean this! It is not all doom and gloom though. I see examples of people helping others, sharing resources, putting up their Christmas lights and taping pictures in their windows so that those taking a walk can see them. Posting encouraging 4

words and funny memes for others to chuckle at.

Then there is the news. Ugh. I try not to pay too much attention to the sad statistics and instead focus on the positive ones. Let me share some with you. As of now there are... • 89,918 confirmed survivors of this virus • 95% of the confirmed cases are mild • 2 drugs already in existence have been successful in treating patients • 3 vaccines are in human trials in the US with other countries around the world conducting their own trials • 0 new cases have been reported in Hubei province (the epicenter of Covid19) in 2 days The thing to remember is that this will have an end point and that we should try to calm the crazy hamster wheel running in circles in our brains. “You can’t calm the storm... so stop trying. What you can do is calm yourself. The storm will pass.” - Timber Hawkeye As strange as things seem today we will get back to normal, even if it is a new normal. “Home isolation is not my preferred choice ... but it is a necessary one ...This is not a permanent state, this is a moment in time.” Gov. Gavin Newsom People will come out of this stronger, more connected and more grateful for the everyday things - going to a movie, visiting friends, travelling, attending school or college. While we are in this period I encourage you to be kind to each other, be kind to your family, and most importantly be kind to yourself. Until next month, Catherine Uretsky Editor, Viva magazine catherine@estrellapartners.com 623-594-9283 April 2020

Coronanxiety I’m sure that most of you know the basics about what you should be doing now to maintain your physical health: Get accurate updates and information from reputable sources such as the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control, frequently use hand sanitizer or wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, seek medical attention if you develop any symptoms, etc. But you also need to take care of your emotional health. One important way to do that is to manage your anxiety and to reduce your stress. Here’s how I’m managing my own coronanxiety and how you can manage yours. 1. Focus on what you do know as opposed to what you don’t know Whenever you notice that your anxiety is leading you to contemplate “what-if” scenarios straight out of World War Z, resist taking the bait. Instead, focus on the facts. For example, while you don’t know if you’ll get the virus, you do know that the majority of people who get

COVID-19 have symptoms that are minor and manageable. 2. Focus on what’s in your control as opposed what isn’t When you feel overwhelmed by what’s going on, take a pause from whatever you’re doing, and shift your mind to thinking about what’s within your control. For example, if you’re in the supermarket, you can’t control whether the other shoppers have washed their hands, but you can put on gloves or use your elbow to open doors and clean your hands thoroughly as soon as you get home. 3. Focus on what you can do as opposed to what you can’t Whenever you feel powerless, focus on the actions you can take instead of those you cannot. You know one thing all kids can and should do? Chores. Chores are good in times of stress because they allow you and your kids to take action and by doing so, counter your feelings of helplessness and powerlessness. Do your chores together whenever possible — for example, prepare a meal, wash the dog, start a vegetable or flower gardens — since this can enhance come see our large selection of outdoor accessories

bonding at a time when feeling close and connected is so important. 4. Help yourself by helping others Whenever you feel paralyzed by difficult feelings, one way to get unstuck is to help other people who are in need. Check on a neighbor who lives alone, text a friend who works in a business that’s been hit hard by the pandemic, or call an elderly family member to say hello. Practicing kindness and helping others are great ways to reinforce your own feelings of agency and control, and they have the bonus of making you feel empowered and connected — important feelings that we could all use more of during these times of stress and potential social isolation. 5. Limit your news consumption The situation is changing and developing by the hour which is keeping many of us glued to the news or to social media. However, when the news is especially stressful, it’s extremely important to find a balance between keeping informed and not becoming overwhelmed. Decide on specific times of day in which you will check the news, and check it only then. In between, try to focus on doing normal life activities as much as possible. We need to give our minds and bodies as many opportunities as possible to de-stress and recover, which means taking breaks from all stress-inducing activities such as news consumption or conversations about the news.

6. Keep your perspective Right now it can be hard for any of us — psychologists included! — to see the light at the end of the tunnel. But this emergency situation will resolve eventually. We don’t know if it will be in weeks or in months, but humans are highly adaptable creatures and life will seem normal again soon. World, we’re definitely being challenged right now. But we’re far from helpless. We can take control; we can take steps to actively manage our emotional health when we’re stressed or distressed; and we can communicate with our loved ones and stay connected to them. And once we do, we’ll emerge from this crisis having gained something of a great value, something that only true challenges can bestow — increased resilience, understanding and empathy. Business 411 When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.” There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown. • The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. It also allows for advertisers to re-position a brand or introduce a new product. • Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times. • Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, which can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession. • When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current – and possibly future – sales. An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.” An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits.

don’t give cost incentives, they can change the ad message to being expensive but worth it. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides. Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/ or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share. Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.” -----------------------------We at Estrella Publishing are open for business and here working overtime to support our clients and potential future clients with their marketing strategy. Call / text 623-594-9283 with any questions

Another strategy used by marketers is changing the ad message and using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. Some advertisers will offer interest-free loans, coupons or special promotions to boost sales and market share. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. Money Matters It’s Not Easy, But Look Past the Market Selloff These are challenging times. Like everyone, you are concerned about keeping your family safe and healthy, and you’re doing your part to help protect your community from the effects of the coronavirus. And if you’re an investor, you must also address your financial situation. How should you respond to the current market volatility and recent declines in investment prices?

First, though, it seems likely that the investment world will finally calm down only when the health situation shows signs of containment – and this will inevitably happen, despite the grim reports we are seeing these days. As a country, we have the motivation, the will, the solidarity and the resources to defeat the coronavirus and its effects, despite the pain and trauma it is now undoubtedly causing. So, back to our original question: What should you do? Here are a few suggestions:

Remember why you’re investing. Given the market decline, you may be tempted to change For one thing, try to avoid what many others your investment strategy. But keep in mind seem to be doing: panicking. The market selloff that your financial goals, such as a comfortable may feel unsettling, but it appears to be driven retirement, are longer-term than the shelf life as much, or more, by fear and panic than by of the coronavirus. These goals, not today’s economic or financial reality. headlines, should guide your decisions. Re-evaluate your risk tolerance. The recent Uncertainty is high, but there are reasons – solid, volatility provides a good test of your ability objective reasons – that provide more confidence to weather short-term swings in your portfolio. in the longer-term outlook, suggesting that If you’re having a hard time coping with these conditions still warrant an eventual rebound. losses, your portfolio may be positioned too U.S. unemployment entered this situation near a aggressively for your risk tolerance. 5 REASONS TO HAVE A TRUST A Revocable Living Trust creates the legal framework for your assets to be handled if you become sick or incapacitated or upon your death. Here are 5 of the top reasons to have a trust: 1. Your assets can be distributed without giving information to all heirs. Probates require notice to all heirs—including omitted children or siblings. 2. Assets located in multiple states can be managed without court involvement in any state. 3. A trust allows controlled distribution to minor children or grandchildren. Without a trust, a court conservatorship will be required for distributions to minor which have a value

over $10,000. Conservatorships involve annual expenses for court approved accountings, use of the funds is limited and all funds are dispersed at 18. 4. A trust can include incentives for children or grandchildren to go to college, stay away from drugs and become gainfully employed. 5. When you have multiple beneficiaries, including charities, there is centralized management of assets by the Successor Trustee of your choice. Sleep Apnea Myths While many are familiar with the term, sleep apnea is commonly misunderstood - and largely undiagnosed. In other words, millions of people have no idea that they’re suffocating each night while they sleep.

With sleep apnea, you stop breathing because the muscles in your throat relax, collapse and restrict airflow for 10 seconds or longer. When this happens, your brain triggers you to “wake” just enough to take a breath, 5, 20 or over 100 times an hour, even though you don’t remember waking at all. Sleep is one of our three pillars of health, along with diet and exercise. Persistent sleep interruptions can dramatically affect your quality of life. People with sleep apnea may experience low energy levels, dizziness, shortness of breath and chest discomfort. Short term, it can negatively impact your mood, productivity, personal relationships, and safety at work and behind the wheel. It’s also strongly linked to serious health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Here are common myths and truths about sleep apnea. Myth #1: Only people who snore have sleep apnea While it is true that snoring is the #1 indicator of obstructive sleep apnea in men and women - you can have sleep apnea without snoring, too.

* Forgetfulness * Sexual dysfunction * Frequent nighttime urination Some people with sleep apnea may also hear from a partner that they make gasping or choking sounds while they sleep. If you experience any of these symptoms, with or without snoring, you should talk with your doctor. Myth #2: Sleep apnea only affects men, overweight people, or those who snore Sleep apnea can impact anyone regardless of their weight, age or gender. In fact, 40% of newly diagnosed patients are women. While some people may be more prone to be affected by the disorder than others, sleep apnea does not discriminate. And it’s worth repeating: You don’t have to snore to have sleep apnea. Myth #3: Wearing a big, bulky, noisy mask is not worth treating my sleep apnea Today’s primary treatment for sleep apnea, continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, is smaller, quieter and more comfortable than ever. Some people even report that their CPAP machine is so quiet, they didn’t think it was on. If you have concerns about your quality of sleep, discuss them with your doctor. You can also take a short quiz on ResMed.com/FreeSleepQuiz to determine if you may be at risk for sleep apnea.

Other symptoms of sleep apnea include: * Constant tiredness * Poor concentration * Morning headaches * Depressed mood * Night sweats * Weight gain * Lack of energy 14
