From Me To You... Welcome to the April edition of Viva! During a recent conversation with my Mum I found out that my childhood home is up for short term rent. For the next 6 months I could rent my memories. Let me tell you it was very tempting. Due to the location of this house it would probably cost more to get there than it would to rent, and I really could not take advantage of it this year as my summer is ridiculously overbooked already. Plus it is unfurnished and England in the summer is not exactly comfortable to start with. But still. It made me think, can you ever really go home? I flipped through the online pictures and immediately a sense of outrage overtook me. They had cut down nearly every tree that had surrounded my home. The cherry tree that I lay under reading Tess of the D’Urbervilles - gone. The oak I learned to climb and hide in - gone. The broad limbed beauty my siblings and I built a tree house in - gone. What else had changed? Well it seemed they had removed one bathroom only to relocate it on the opposite side of the house. Why? Beats me. In the kitchen there was an addition. A stove. Do

I noted that with an energy rating of ‘F’ they had not decided to improve the heating or insulation in the house. Now that I could have got behind. Every room had a fireplace to provide heat, and for that reason I can now win the fire starting challenge if I ever make it onto Survivor. Also the eaves over my sister’s bedroom would collect snow every winter, only to release it in a beautiful waterfall in the spring. In front of her doorway. Inside. I am guessing that may still be a problem. Despite all these glitches it is still the home I grew up in and it holds a special place in my heart. The indoor shutters are still there - 19th century insulation at it’s best. The amazing staircase that wraps around the outside of the entrance hall reminds me of decorating trees at Christmas. And sliding down the bannister, to my parent’s horror. The long driveway where I learned how to use a stick shift and had the horrible job of shovelling when it snowed still winds past fields and around the front of the house. Yes, the house has changed but my home is still there, peeking out behind the improvements that subsequent owners have made. Anyone want to go in on a temporary house share with me? On Our Cover

Pebblecreek Pickleball is Golden! This is true not only because of the many medals won by our club members at the recent USAPA sanctioned pickleball tournament but because of the tremendous turnout and support of our member volunteers. Within 17 different categories, there were a total of 213 volunteers over the three days of the tournament. They stepped up to the plate whenever they were needed, including using every possible means to dry the courts on Thursday morning. “The best part of this tournament was the tremendous team support. It made my job as Tournament Director one of the best I’ve undertaken,” says Mike Crabtree. One of the external participants wrote, “I just finished playing in the tournament, & I have to say that was the best run tournament I’ve ever been in. The hospitality was by far beyond

anyone’s expectations, the volunteers were so nice all the time & always had a big smile on their faces, & the facility was beautiful. Great job.” This is just one example of many comments received from both external participants and our own members. Special thanks goes out to our major sponsors, Earnhardt Motors, Estrella Parkway Medical Center, Waste Management, and Franklin Sports, who provided each tournament participant with 3 X-40 Pickleballs. As evidenced by the numerous sponsor banners displayed on the courts, we had strong support from the community and the tournament was a financial success. Funds raised will be directed to many future capital expenditures to benefit our members. Participants were eligible to win one of the many prizes donated by Paddletek, Selkirk Sport, Pickleball Central, Steve McElroy, Deb and Steve Smedley, Dr. David Ott (OrthoArizona), Linda Costello (Cherry Creek Mortgage Company), Foot Solutions, Estrella Mountain Dentistry, Title Boxing Club, Papa Murphy’s Pizza, Harkins Theatres, Cindy Watty (Alfresco Travel). “I won the Selkirk Epic paddle. I was so excited to win and I LOVE the paddle,” says Maureen Dolan, Pebblecreek Pickleball Club member. Medal winners were delighted to receive an engraved wineglass that represented either gold, silver or bronze, a pleasant change to the usual medal. Last but not least, our club members won 32 medals - 8 Gold, 11 Silver and 13 Bronze. Had the Women’s Doubles event not been cancelled due to rain, the medal count would have been even higher. Kitchen Ideas As the hub of activity in a home, the kitchen serves many purposes: meal prep base, dining area, family gathering place, celebration zone, and entertainment center, to name a few. Does your high-use, heart-of-the-home kitchen meet the challenges and needs of your family life? If not, then it’s time for a renovation. The good news is that remodeling the most used room in your house not only improves the space itself, it increases the overall value of your home.

So what are you waiting for? Start planning your kitchen remodeling project today. Here are six ideas, ranging from minor to major: * Replace your faucet. For the amount you use your kitchen faucet, functionality and ease-of-use should be top priorities. * Paint your cabinets. If replacing your kitchen cabinets is not in the budget this year, repainting them is the next best thing. A fresh coat of paint can dramatically change the appearance of your kitchen. Select a paint that dries hard so it can

stand up to wear and tear; choose a satin finish paint to hide imperfections in the cabinet surface. To complete the look, consider replacing the cabinet hardware. Pick the style that appeals most to you and remember knobs are more common on cabinets, handles on drawers. * Add a backsplash. Create an instant wow factor by enhancing the walls above the work areas of your kitchen. The use of varying shapes and materials can really showcase your creative side. Today’s homeowners are choosing larger sized subway tiles, introducing a bit more color to this traditionally neutral-colored area of the kitchen, experimenting with varying tile patterns, and choosing metallic and mirrored finishes. Extending the backsplash all the way to the ceiling, with the use of shelving instead of cabinets for storage, is a new trend gaining ground. Whatever your choice, a new backsplash can delight you every time you enter the kitchen. Whatever your level of kitchen remodeling, these upgrades are sure to make life easier and more enjoyable in a room that is the focal “living” room in any home. Go ahead and plan your renovations today - and experience the benefits for years to come.

Moments of Zen

you love, like spending quality time with your family. 3. Choose quality over quantity.

If you’re one of the many people who feel frazzled on a regular basis, you’re probably longing for a vacation or a day at the spa. Fortunately, there are plenty of easy ways to cut stress that you can sneak into everyday life. From mealtime to bedtime, if you start embracing small moments to be more mindful, you’ll be surprised how fast you can cut down on overall stress.

Make the most of your time each day by being intentional with your activities. Whether it’s playing a new board game with the kids after dinner or watching a TV show with your spouse, small quality moments can help you relax and enjoy yourself and your family when at home.

Here are five simple examples of how you can find your own moments of Zen today:

Take those extra moments to reflect on everything you accomplished during your day or week. This will help give you a sense of pride and is a real confidence-booster.

4. Take time to reflect.

5. Break from technology.

1. Take a 5-minute walk. Whether it’s getting fresh air or just getting yourself moving, a change of place and pace can reduce stress and give you a few moments to relax, especially during hectic times. For example, take a 5-minute break while dinner’s cooking to walk around the block. Weather not right for a walk? Give your body a quick stretch with an at-home yoga session.

Take a break from technology, even if it’s only for 5 minutes. Set down your phone, turn off the television and step away from all electronics. Just giving your mind a break from the active world of technology can reduce stress and help you mentally reset, especially during mealtimes, where being present is particularly important. These are just five simple examples, but moments of Zen can be found anywhere if you take the time to look for them. Remember, the little moments are what make the biggest impact in life, and by embracing mindfulness, you’re setting the stage to be able to focus on what really matters.

2. Find quick-and-easy solutions. If making dinner for your family seems like a daunting task, choose quick-and-easy options designed to take the hassle out of meal prep. The frozen food aisle is a great place to begin your journey toward finding your happy place in the kitchen. Here, you can find a variety of products that taste great and require minimal prep work, so you can dedicate more time to doing the things

Furry Friends

Pet parents know that there’s nothing like the love of furry family members. Keeping your pets healthy is a priority because you want them to live as long as possible. However, health care costs for pets are expensive, and if you are dealing with additional expenses such as prescriptions for chronic conditions, it can become a burden to your budget.

Fortunately, there are several things pet owners can do proactively to keep pets healthy and save money on health care costs. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is just as applicable to pets as it is to their human caregivers. One of the most important things a pet parent can do to ensure the ongoing health of any animal is to bring them in for annual checkups. During wellness checkups, veterinarians can screen for a variety of health conditions. They provide insight on diseases, age-related concerns, dental health, nutritional considerations and so much more. Plus you’re able to provide your pet with important vaccinations. Regular checkups help vets identify problems sooner rather than later, and this can translate to more affordable health care costs to pet parents in the long run. Costs for managing your pet’s health can be a bear with pet owners spending more than $8 billion on prescription and over-the-counter medications annually. The Inside Rx Pets program offers savings on commonly prescribed medications such as insulin and antibiotics, as well as seizure, glaucoma and anti-inflammatory drugs. Benefiting from these discounts is easy for pet parents: If your pet’s veterinarian writes a prescription for an applicable medication, simply Viva

download the free discount card from the Inside Rx Pets website and present it with the prescription at one of the 40,000 participating pharmacies located across the U.S. that fill prescriptions for animals. Obesity is a growing concern for many pets. Poor nutrition paired with limited exercise causes pets to put on additional weight. This weight can put them at higher risk for health concerns like diabetes, osteoarthritis and ligament injuries. These health concerns not only risk the quality of life for Fluffy or Fido, but also can deeply impact your pocketbook. Pets, just like humans, require exercise and proper nutrition to stay healthy and feel their best. Whether that’s letting your rabbit out of the cage to run or going on a walk with your dog, be sure to make regular exercise a part of your fur family’s routine. If you’re unsure what is appropriate for your pet, call your veterinarian or bring it up at a wellness visit. They’ll be delighted you reached out for more information to keep your pet healthy. Choosing between a pet and an unexpected health expense is something no one wants to experience. Being prepared can make a big difference when facing difficult decisions, so it’s wise to have savings set aside in case of a rainy day. Some people are starting pet health savings accounts (HSAs) that are similar to the accounts that people hold for themselves to pay for medical expenses. Whether you choose that path or a traditional savings account, when you have an emergency fund you won’t have to worry about any unexpected expenses, so you can simply focus on getting your pet well again. Being proactive is important for keeping your pets healthy for many years. From scheduling annual wellness visits to taking advantage of the Inside Rx Pets discount card, there are many easy actions pet parents can take today to reduce costs so furry family members stay well. Life As A Caregiver

her sitting in the family room. Her face lit up when she saw me. It was wonderful. There wasn’t too much to talk about since she doesn’t remember much of what happens during her day, but we laughed and hugged….that was all we really needed. I left after about an hour…and would return in two days.

I knew the day would come when I could no longer care for my mom in the manner it took to keep her comfortable. I knew it because I had read about it over and over. I knew it because the support group I attend spoke about it. I knew it because that is the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. I knew it because all the people I know That day wasn’t as positive. I wasn’t allowed to return for two weeks. It honestly felt like someone had socked me in the stomach (on the one hand), but I also felt an enormous amount of relief (on the other hand).

The kind people at her new home said their job was to take care of her…and MY job was to enjoy her. That sounded like a good plan. I could deal with that. So when the day finally came when I could visit her, I was so excited and anxious to see her. I came through the beautiful living room and found

Putting our precious cargo in the caring hands of others is exactly the right thing to do as Alzheimer’s patients decline. These professional caregivers are emotionally removed from the horrible reality of the disease and can care for our loved ones efficiently and without hesitation. The constant reminder of how mom is declining surrounds me mentally but not visually like it did when she lived here. That is the healthy ‘break’ that people speak about when warning family members who are caregivers…the ‘break’ from the visual picture we get of our loved ones in discomfort and decline 24/7…the frustration and sadness that we feel all of the time while trying to enjoy them. I continue to work on getting over the guilt and the powerless feeling of not being able to control the situation. I am slowly getting my life back, but it is a new life. Life with my mom in a care facility. The reality of this is that I will have to go through this loss again when she passes away. Hopefully, I will be stronger and better prepared. Hopefully. The Bug Guy Top 9 Reasons to Hire a Pest Control Professional

Pest control professionals are well known for their bug-zapping abilities, but many homeowners still attempt to handle pest infestations by themselves. Usually, they’re motivated by a desire to save money, but this article shows the many reasons why hiring a professional exterminator in the first place is simply the best choice. 1. The services of a pest control professional may cost less in the long run than attempting to battle household pests yourself. Many homeowners purchase treatment after treatment in a vain attempt to rid themselves of pests. 2. Professional exterminators are trained to safely use chemical pesticides. All chemicals, whether available to consumers or only to professionals, carry certain hazards and risks. If these pesticides are applied or stored improperly, damage to property, ill health effects, or even death may occur. 3. The pesticides that professionals use are more powerful and more effective than those that are available for purchase by consumers.

18 Viva

4. Professional pesticides last longer. They provide residual protection for as much as six weeks to five years, depending on the type of pesticide applied. 5. An exterminator can identify the pest that has invaded your home and plan a treatment program to target that exact pest. Some species of ant, for example, are attracted to protein-based baits but will totally ignore sweet baits. 6. Some pests pose a danger to humans in the form of bites or stings. Professional exterminators will wear protective clothing that prevent bees, fire ants, rodents, or other pests from coming into close contact with them. 7. Professional pest control companies often provide an effectiveness guarantee that their treatment efforts will keep pests at bay for at least 30 days. 8. When dealing with chemical pesticides, accidents may sometimes occur and damage to property can result. A professional exterminator will carry insurance to cover any potential damages. 9. Using the services of a pest control professional will save time and effort on your part. It takes much less energy to let a professional take care of things. Ask a Pharmacist There’s no denying that prescription drug coverage and medications can be complex territory. Enter UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement’s Chief Pharmacy Officer Mike Anderson, PharmD. Below, Anderson answers some common questions people ask about drug coverage and prescriptions.

Q. How do I know if my prescriptions are covered by my Medicare plan? A. Whether you get coverage through Medicare Advantage or a standalone Part D plan, each has a formulary, a list of prescription drugs covered. You’ll want to look closely to make sure your medications are covered. Health insurers post plan formularies online, or you can call your plan to request a printed version. Keep in mind that plans can change from year to year, so don’t assume that prescription drugs covered this year will always carry over. Q. How can I save money while remaining on my medications? A. There are many ways to do that: Home-delivery pharmacy benefits can save

20 Viva

money and a trip to the pharmacy. Some mail-order pharmacies offer the convenience of ordering a threemonth supply of drugs delivered to your home for less than purchasing at a retail location. If you prefer to visit a pharmacy, check if your plan offers programs or preferred pharmacy networks to help you save on prescriptions. Switching to generic drugs or drugs on a lower tier of the formulary is another step that could save money. If you are taking brand-name medications now, discuss generic alternatives with your doctor. Q. Can I split my pills in half? A. Talk to your doctor about whether pill-splitting for your medication is medically advised. Also, consult your pharmacist on whether the actual pill form presents risks. Some pills are dangerous when split, because splitting affects how quickly the drug is released into your body. Other pills become ineffective when split, because the pill contains a coating to protect it from stomach acid, and splitting the pill breaks that coating. If you have concerns, talk with your pharmacist.

Eat Healthier

Start small. You don’t have to completely overhaul your diet in a day. Start with small things, like taking your lunch to work instead of eating out, cutting down on soda or getting a new cookbook of healthy recipes to inspire you. Cook at home. When you eat out, even when opting for the “healthy” items on the menu, you could be getting hidden doses of salt, sugar and fat. When you cook at home, you can control exactly what you’re eating, down to the nutrient. It’s healthier for your pocketbook, too. Explore your health insurance discounts. Many health plans offer resources, discounts and incentives for leading a healthier life.

Eat the rainbow. Colorful foods are packed with nutrients. Red foods help heart health and improve memory. Orange foods are good for your eyes, yellow foods help with digestion and brain function, purple foods are powerful antioxidants and green foods are good for your eyes, musculature, bones and teeth.

a solution), pre-cooked frozen shrimp (usually processed with salt), condiments like ketchup and mustard, smoked anything and cottage cheese. Watch your sugar. Too much sugar leads to weight gain, abdominal obesity, low HDL and high LDL, elevated blood sugar and a whole host of other problems. But like salt, sugar can hide in foods you might think are healthy, including instant oatmeal, jarred pasta sauce, smoothies, flavored yogurt and salad dressing. A good rule of thumb: Read the label, and if it has a double-digit sugar count, ditch it. Meatless Mondays! Going vegetarian one day a week is a great way to get more veggies into your diet. Just don’t pack on the refined carbs like white bread, pasta or potatoes in place of the meat. Practice mindful eating. Go all Zen with your food. Focus on what you’re eating, how you’re nourishing your body, and how much you enjoy the taste of the food. Eating at your desk, in the car or in front of the TV makes it more likely you’ll overeat.

Slash the sodium. Lowering your sodium intake can help lower your blood pressure and get rid of water weight. But it’s not as easy as putting down the salt shaker. Sodium lurks in places you’d least expect it. Some surprisingly high-sodium foods: raw chicken (if it’s been pumped up with

Digital Payments Modern digital technology has replaced landlines, television antennas, VCRs, CDs and many other things that were once part of our daily lives - and the next thing to go may well be cash. A few years ago, the idea that we would no longer use cash would have seemed outlandish, but it’s happening right before our eyes. A 2016 Gallup poll found only 24 percent of Americans made all or most of their purchases with cash, compared to 36 percent five years ago. Plus, according to a recent U.S. Bank Cash Behavior Survey, more consumers say they prefer the use of digital apps to make payments versus cash. Digital payments, specifically person-to-person (P2P) payment technologies, have made it fast, safe and convenient to send and receive money from a mobile device. Where once people exchanged cash, they are increasingly sending money to one another via P2P technology services like Zelle(R), which connects the nation’s leading financial institutions to enable consumers to send fast payments to friends, family and people they trust.

typically within minutes when both parties are already registered. * Simplicity

Using P2P makes it easy to send money to friends and family with a bank account in the U.S. - whether you’re using your banking app on your phone or the online banking portal on your laptop, you can pay friends back or request money from family wherever you are and without ever looking for an ATM. * Safety Make sure you only send money to people you know and trust, and make sure you type in their phone number or email address accurately when you send funds. By only sending money to people you’re already familiar with, you help to mitigate your chances of falling victim to scams. Are the days of wrinkly dollar bills and trips to the ATM over? Maybe, maybe not - but as more people switch to mobile payments, the convenience, security and ease will revolutionize the way people exchange money.

If you haven’t already joined the 100K consumers, on average a day, who are signing up to use P2P payments, the experts at Early Warning Services offer three ways to be “Money Smart” in a Digital World: * Speed When rent is due, or someone’s birthday is coming up, time and money are critical! Don’t send money that will take days to get to someone or could get lost/ stolen at the post office. With Zelle you can safely send money,
