From Me To You...
Welcome to the April edition of Viva!
It has come to my attention that many of you don’t know how we choose our cover models. Well let me explain the process... I get a call, or an e-mail (sometimes even a text) from someone who a) wants to be on a cover, b) knows someone who has done something worthy of recognition or c) wants to let the community know about a local club or group for the residents. I get in touch with them and as long as they live here (or occasionally have a strong connection to the community) I will arrange the photo shoot and interview. The whole process is relatively painless, no husbands have been harmed in the photo sessions, and it takes under an hour altogether. Some months I have many covers “in the bag” and other months I am scrambling to find people willing to share their lives with us. There have been instances when a company has requested to purchase the cover as advertising space. It happens, but not very often. In that case it is obviously an advertisement, for example if a political candidate has a cover it says on there that it is ‘paid for by ...’ Which leads me to the question of price for residents. There is none. If you are a resident and want to pose for my camera it costs you nothing but time. And of course you will be stopped from time to time when someone recognizes you as the star that you are! I hope that clears up the great mystery of “How to get on a cover” and that perhaps some of you feel inspired to get in touch and become a future cover model yourselves. It is also a great way for fledgling clubs and groups to get the word out there that you exist!

On Our Cover Wisconsin Party in PebbleCreek for 20 years! For 20 consecutive years, former Wisconsin residents have had an annual Wisconsin party in PebbleCreek to celebrate their home state. (The Wisconsin party is the only state party that consecutively has held a party every year) This year’s celebration included a birthday cake and decorations. Over 200 people attended. Upon entering the Tuscany Falls Ballroom, everyone was greeted by Bucky Badger, and had an opportunity for a photo with him and his assistant.
6 Viva
The highlight of the event was honoring Zita Wessa who started the Wisconsin Party 20 years ago. As a thank you, she was given a beautiful painting of Door County, donated by Al Carney along with a gift card to her favorite restaurant, Culvers.
When the party started getting bigger, there was not much shade in Sunrise Park , so it was decided to move indoors to Eagle’s Nest and make it an appetizer/dessert party and then a potluck dinner. Zita and her crew made the food for all the potlucks.
Culvers donated all the frozen custard and cheese curds along with a year’s supply of Culvers custard that was included with the Grand Prize Basket. In addition, over $1100 was raised for the Agua Fria Food Bank.
The last few years, the party has moved to Tuscany Falls Ballroom. The highlight year was when Craig Culver and his wife attended this event, and he shared their story of the growth of the Culver’s chain. It was a very inspirational story.
The first party in 1997, was held at the Activities Office and attended by about 25 folks. It then moved to the Eagle’s Nest pool and thereafter to the Estrella Park for a few years. When Sunrise Park was built, the party was held there for several years. Food was made by Zita and her crew for a few years, and then the food was catered.
Wisconsinites are very proud of their state, and we never forget our roots. We are very faithful to our hometown teams, the Packers, Badgers, Brewers, and to all that Wisconsin offers. Many of those who live in PebbleCreek summer in Wisconsin and retain homes there. We hope to see you on February 25, 2018 for the next Wisconsin Party!!!!

Tips for hosting a better brunch Love the idea of hosting a brunch, but begin to regret it the moment you’re toiling over a pan of bacon grease while your friends are chatting over mimosas? You’re not alone. Whether you’re planning a simple brunch for a small group or an Easter brunch to wow a crowd, these simple tips and ideas are guaranteed to get you out of the kitchen and into the action. Prepare a game plan. Developing a checklist will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed with to-do’s. Once you know how many people will be attending the brunch, start planning the menu, gather recipes and make a grocery list. Take inventory of your cooking supplies, serving dishes and tableware. While cleaning the house, identify what decorations are needed. Picture the scene the night before. Figure out how to serve the food, decide where to put the drinks, gather extra seating and put all the plates, cups, cutlery and napkins on the table. Also, don’t forget the mugs or cocktail glasses if you
Viva
Let Me Entertain You plan to serve coffee or mimosas. While it might seem obvious, these little details can easily be overlooked. Lastminute jobs are bound to happen, so conquering the planned details ahead of time will help keep you sane.
Create a menu full of make-ahead recipes. From drinks to dessert, make sure your menu allows you to spend more times with friends and family and less time in the kitchen. Sure, everyone loves a good omelet, but you’re not a short order cook. Instead, opt for low-maintenance recipes that can be prepared the night before and popped in the oven the next morning. You can never go wrong with classic egg-based dishes such as quiche, strata and casserole. If your culinary skills aren’t up for the task of cooking for a crowd, don’t be afraid to choose storebought or catered dishes. This will help alleviate any unnecessary stress and allow you to enjoy the event.
Ditch the pile of dirty dishes in favor of disposable tableware. Instead of standing over the sink cleaning, spend the extra time relaxing with family and friends. Set the table in style. Make sure your brunch is as stylish as it is tasty. For a “hare-raising” reaction from your friends and family, fold Chinet Classic White napkins into the shape of bunnies and display in the center of each plate. A bunny napkin fold can also double as a place setting card. Simply write the name of the guest on one of the bunny ears. It’s a pretty and practical way to add personality to the table.

Now is the time to join together in building an even stronger America. Two hundred forty years has taught us that only as one can we truly benefit from the many different opinions and solutions. Only as one can we overcome the vitriol that seems to have settled in our hearts and minds. Together, we succeed, separate, we fail. It really is that simple. The lyrics end with a startling reminder – “Especially the people, that’s America to me.” Stand next to a friend or relative and look at your reflection in the mirror. The only resemblance is that each has a nose and two eyes, two ears, a mouth. This is where the similarities end because if we look closer we see two different people. This is the strength of America – similar, but different. August 1945 may have been a different time, but the messages of those offerings are no different today. Furry Friends Leptospirosis
You may have heard the chatter at your local dog park or doggie playgroup about a new virus that is running rampant amongst our beloved four-legged friends. The reports boast some alarming numbers, dog fatalities, and signs of a possible outbreak. Much like the childhood game of telephone, as the story passes along the content become more and more misconstrued. So, let’s stick to the facts. Leptospirosis is a virus caused by bacteria called Leptospires. This bacterium lives in fresh water, soil, and mud. It is more commonly found in areas with tropical climates and high annual rainfall. The first case was documented in the 1800’s so it’s been around for some time. Leptospirosis can affect farm animals and dogs but is rare in
cats. The most common way that leptospirosis is spread is through the urine of infected animals, which can get into water or soil. Animals can become infected when they come into direct contact with this contaminated water or soil. The bacteria enter through cuts in the skin or through mucous membranes (eyes, nose or mouth). Drinking contaminated water may also infect animals. Is my dog at risk? Awareness and prevention are key. As a pet owner, you know your pet best. You know your pet’s personality, energy level, hunger and thirst levels. If you begin to notice that your pet is acting differently, it would make sense to monitor any signs and symptoms closely, such as: •Drinking more than usual •Urinating more than usual •Lack of urination

•Redness in the eyes •Severe weakness and depression •Reluctance to eat •Fever over 103.5° F •Vomiting •Diarrhea •Stiffness or severe muscle pain In terms of prevention, keep a close eye on your dog to ensure he is not drinking from puddles or community water bowls – easier said than done for sure! According to the CDC, dogs may pass the virus to each other; however this is rare. Not all dogs that come into contact with leptospirosis will contract it either. There are vaccinations available for Leptospirosis. Whether or not that is the best choice for your dog is a personal choice. Please speak extensively with your veterinarian about the best option for your dog based on his/her age, present health and any underlining medical conditions. Be sure to ask about the potential risks and side effects so that, together, you can make the best decision in the present moment for the safety and health of your beloved fur-friend. If you think your pet may have leptospirosis, contact your veterinarian immediately. There are specific tests to diagnosis this virus, which is treatable with antibiotics.

It Aint Over Candidate’s Corner
Exciting news! I am in a runoff election for the open seat on Goodyear City Council. I am so excited for this second opportunity to win your vote for a council seat! Did you know that I have lived in Goodyear since 2004? My husband and I moved here just in time for our oldest child to start preschool. Now he is a junior at our local high school! A big reason that 12 years have flown by here for us in Goodyear is that my parents also moved here when we did. They followed their grandkids, I know, no doubt about it! But now, they are both in their 80s, and Goodyear is the right place for all of us! Goodyear has grown up right around my family. But, our city is only starting to boom! For example, look at the growth we’ve experienced with the building of our Harkins Theater
12 Viva
in the past year! I look forward to further developing amenities, such as restaurants, retail offerings, cultural events, and opportunity for camaraderie! Families such as mine, and yours, need locations where we all feel safe and welcomed. My parents have needs now that I never noticed before! For example, we pay close attention to accessible restroom facilities, and entertainment we can enjoy without having to use stairs! A council member does more than attend meetings. I am blessed to be a stay at home mom. My availability for the residents of Pebble Creek, and all of Goodyear, is 100%. Yes, I have contacts in Palm Valley, Historic Goodyear, and Estrella who are also counting on me. But, I have the time to commit to this city! I have the desire. I have the energy, and I’m taking action! I will have the time to meet with police and fire personnel, hearing what their needs are to
keep our city safe. I can visit local businesses, listen to management and owners, and ask how the city can help them in continued success. I will get to know residents by attending your clubs, getting to know you and listening to what you need as Goodyear develops. I am the best candidate for you! Why? Because I understand wanting to keep home values high and finding a way to keep Goodyear safe and inviting while we grow! Yes, I represent all of the city. Not just my own community. Any decisions that are good for you ARE good for Goodyear! How can you help me during this runoff election? The number one thing I need is YOUR vote! Please share with neighbors and friends, let them know that I am your choice, and I’m excited to serve in our city. Please contact me at sara@gilliganforgoodyear.com with any questions, or a request for a yard sign! Submitted by Sara Gilligan

Home improvements to tackle before you move in You found the perfect home, so it’s not surprising that you want to move in as quickly as possible. However, there are some projects that are best done when the house is still empty. So, consider completing the following seven items before the moving trucks arrive. * Painting. A fresh coat of paint can instantly update a room, and it’s common to buy a home knowing you will need to paint several rooms or the entire house after the sale. However, painting is best done while every wall is accessible and there are no worries about getting paint on furniture or rugs. * Changing locks. Now is the time to change the locks on your new home to eliminate the risk of any former keyholders accessing your new space. Do this even if you know the former keyholders because you never know who they shared keys with. This fix is quick, inexpensive and it provides you
HOME SWEET HOME
with peace of mind.
* Flooring updates. Redoing a floor is always easier when the floor is empty. Whether you’re choosing to redo wood floors or lay tile before you move in, tackling this process now also allows you to keep wood and tile dust off of furniture and collectables. * Roof repairs. Roof repairs are a must. If the home inspection revealed any damage to the roof, make the necessary repairs before moving in. Choose a contractor experienced with the type of shingles your home requires. * Removing popcorn ceilings. No one likes these. We’re not sure anyone ever did, but alas, they are a common sight, especially in older homes. Popcorn ceilings (and walls) are easy to remove, but messy. Use a spray bottle to moisten an area, then scrape the texture off with a towel. Cleanup will be much easier if you complete this project before introducing your furniture to the space. * Fix leaks. If left untreated, water leaks can do serious damage to furniture, rugs, flooring and other
Viva
valuables. Leaks can also lead to secondary problems like rotting wood, mold and mildew. And let’s be honest, no one wants to live in a house where you can’t use the water, so address plumbing issues before you move in. * Child and pet proofing. Careful child and pet proofing can protect your babies (furry or otherwise). Gates at the top and bottom of stairs, outlet covers and locks on cabinets, drawers and any other place chemicals or medicines are kept, can help make your new home a safer place. As difficult as it can be, sometimes delaying your move-in by a few weeks can save months of frustration in the long run. So don’t wait, because the sooner you start, the sooner you can start your new life in your new home.

Yum Yum! Reorganize your kitchen to encourage healthy eating habits
“Practicing ‘mindful eating’ can be hindered by a disorganized refrigerator and a cluttered kitchen,” says celebrity nutritionist and healthy cooking expert KeriGlassman. “When you’re preparing and eating meals in an organized environment, you’re more likely to pay attention to what you’re eating and whether it really does nourish your body and mind.” And while Glassman says refrigerator organization is a first step in leading a healthier life, it’s sometimes easier said than done. In fact, independent consumer research of 1,000 adults, commissioned by LG Electronics shows that more than one-third of American families say fruits and vegetables are the hardest things to keep organized in the fridge. Glassman offers tips to get more organized in the kitchen for a healthier 2017: Take control of your refrigerator “Keeping healthy items in your refrigerator front and center can actually affect the nutrition value of what you’re preparing for your family,” Glassman says. “Today’s refrigerators are making this easier with advanced organization features, like fridges with the new LG InstaView feature that makes it simple to organize your food in a way that puts the most healthful
14 Viva
choices in easy view and reach.” This feature, now available in more than a dozen models in a variety of sizes, styles, finishes and prices, has a tinted glass panel on the right door that illuminates with two quick knocks to allow users to see what’s inside without opening the door. “And when you see healthy choices right in front of you, you’re more likely to choose those first,” notes Glassman. Additionally, transferring packaged- or bulk-foods into clear glass containers can help keep the fridge looking fresh, and keep your foods fresher longer - which in turn, allows the enticing colors of fresh fruits and veggies to draw your attention.
affect how healthfully you eat. “Keep a clear counter,” Glassman says. “Designate an area for keys and mail that is away from your cooking space. Don’t keep unhealthy snacks sitting out on the counter, where their high visibility will make them even more tempting.”
“A clean fridge with colorful fruits and veggies is key to healthy eating,” Glassman says. “My favorite weekend mornings are spent on color quests at the farmer’s market gathering at least seven different colored fruits and veggies. Not only does the fridge look gorgeous, it inspires fresh cooking and will improve your eating habits!”
After a meal, and especially after dinner, clear plates and clean up in the kitchen right away. Leaving chores for later will only draw you back into the kitchen, where you might be tempted to snack even though you’ve already satisfied your body’s nutritional needs. In fact, Glassman says, consider adopting a closed-kitchen policy after dinnertime. Close the door to the room, if you have one, and if your home has an open floor plan, avoid making unnecessary trips to the kitchen.
Kitchen counters often become the repository for lots of clutter, from kitchen electronics and small appliances, to car keys and the mail. The clutter takes away valuable cooking space and can
“Organize your pantry and fridge with the motto, if you see it, you’ll use it,” Glassman says. “Rearrange so the healthiest choices are most visible, and the less healthy ones aren’t in easy sight.” April 2017

Life As A Caregiver Take care of YOU
Posted on April 20, 2016 by lifeofacaregiverdaughter In my last post, I wrote about longterm health care and that all of us should have it. I applied for it when I first moved to Arizona. But let me prepare you for the process I experienced because it can be a bit intimidating, which I didn’t know until the time of the interview.
to remember three words and to draw the face of a clock with the time showing 10:30 on it. To this day, I remember those three words (table, apple and penny). But, I digress.
So now the nurse explains to me about the memory test. She’s going to tell me 10 words (10 words!!) to remember. Then we will chat. Then she will ask me to repeat the 10 words. Then we will chat again. Then she will ask me to repeat the A nurse came to my home for words again…and so on for three an hour-long interview, which times! So we begin. I remembered included learning about my health eight of them the first time. That’s history, taking my vital signs and good…and a little above-average. giving me an oral memory test! Then I remembered seven of them Yes….a MEMORY TEST!!! And the second time. That was pretty that’s when I began to freak out. What if I can’t remember anything? average. Then I remembered seven of them again the third time, but What if I flunk the test? What if a different seven. THEN she says they don’t give me the insurance? she’s going to say a list of words and I’m supposed to tell her if any Now, I was there when the doctor of those were among the original tested my mom for dementia. Her 10. I got those ALL correct!! So memory test included being asked
the interesting part here is that it is easier for us to distinguish the right words from the wrong words rather than having to recall the whole list of words on our own. This entire word process lasted about 30 minutes….and I passed!!! But I was SO nervous. I guess I’ve always hated tests! So what does all this really mean? It means, as a caregiver, you not only need to be focused on your family member’s needs, but you also need to be aware of your own. Not just getting enough sleep and exercise, and eating right, and taking time for yourself, and developing interesting things to occupy your body & mind apart from the task at hand. But for long-term preparation, as well. Like what I mentioned in an earlier post: make sure YOU have a will and a health care directive, make sure YOU have long-term health care, make sure YOU have a Power of Attorney in case something happens to YOU. Because, what if it did? What if it did and your family member is still alive? Who would take care of them? Submitted by Kathy Linton, West Valley Resident

New relief for knee pain may be on the horizon Innovations in modern medicine have brought many artificial joints and bionic body parts to patients. However, a prosthetic replacement for the meniscus - the tissue pad located between the thigh and shin bones - has not been available. Now two clinical trials underway across the U.S. may help make the “artificial meniscus” a reality, providing a new treatment option for millions of Americans with persistent knee pain caused by injured or deteriorated meniscus. The meniscus is highly vulnerable to tearing, both from physical activity and excess weight. Once damaged, it has a very limited ability to heal. More than 1 million partial meniscectomies to remove or repair a torn meniscus are performed in the U.S. every year about the same as the total number of hip and knee replacement surgeries combined. However, many patients still experience persistent knee pain following meniscus surgery.
The Doctor Is in
“I went from working out seven days week to having to stop any exercise activities,” Cullum says. “And my work as a parttime volunteer firefighter was challenging, since it was difficult to move any equipment and my mobility was compromised when responding to an emergency scene.”
Cullum says, “and I am ecstatic to be able to resume one of my favorite activities - volunteering together with my husband and children at our local fire department.”
Cullum discovered a hospital near her home town is participating in the clinical trial of the NUsurface Meniscus Implant - the first “artificial meniscus” designed to replace the damaged one.
“It is important to note that NUsurface is an investigational device that is limited by United States law to investigational use,” Dr. Alfred says. “Responses to the NUsurface can and do vary with each patient, so those interested in the trial should discuss their individual situations with a clinical trial physician.”
“There are limited options for patients who experience persistent knee pain following meniscus surgery,” says Dr. Richard Alfred, orthopedic surgeon at Capital Region Orthopaedic Associates and VENUS study investigator. “It is our hope that the NUsurface implant alleviates pain in these patients, allowing them to return to their previous levels of activity.”
Cullum received the implant in July 2016 through a small incision in her knee. She completed a sixNew York area volunteer firefighter week rehabilitation program, and she has now Tracy Cullum was diagnosed with returned to daily a meniscus tear eight years ago, leisure activities when the 42-year-old mother of like hot yoga two was experiencing a constant and her work ache and the inability to put any weight on her left leg. The NUsurface Meniscus Implant has been used in Europe since 2008 and Israel since 2011.
To be eligible for the clinical studies, you must be between the ages of 30 and 75, have pain after medial meniscus surgery and have had meniscus surgery at least six months ago. To find a study site near you, visit www. activeimplants.com/kneepaintrial.

To Your Health! Preparing for surgery? These tips could save your life
ASA offers the following steps to take before surgery to ensure the safest outcome:
If surgery is in your future, it’s never too early to prepare. Whether you’re having an outpatient procedure or a major operation involving a hospital stay, the American Society of Anesthesiologists encourages you to take simple steps to be ready for the big day, starting with talking with your physician anesthesiologist, a vital member of your care team.
Find out who will provide the anesthesia - Be sure your anesthesia care is led by a physician anesthesiologist. A physician anesthesiologist is a medical doctor who specializes in anesthesia, pain and critical care medicine and works with your surgeon and other physicians to develop and administer your anesthesia care plan. Physician anesthesiologists have 12 to 14 years of medical education and 12,000 to 16,000 hours of clinical training to ensure safe, high-quality care.
No one understands this more than 18-year-old Hunter Jones, who was diagnosed with a rare case of colon cancer and is grateful her physician anesthesiologist, Mary Herman, M.D., Ph.D., called off her initial cancer surgery. During the preoperative evaluation with Dr. Herman, Hunter mentioned a tingly feeling and numbness in her legs after her previous anesthesia experiences, including not being able to walk for a few days. Her symptoms sounded alarm bells for Dr. Herman, and she sent Hunter for additional tests, which revealed a brain tumor. If Hunter had proceeded with the anesthesia and colon cancer surgery, she might have been permanently paralyzed.
Your physician anesthesiologist will create a care plan for you, but you must provide detailed information. When you talk with your physician anesthesiologist before the procedure, be sure to discuss:
* Your health and medications - Provide details including how active you are, if you snore, and whether you have chronic health issues such as heart or lung problems, liver or kidney disease, “Hunter’s experience illustrates just allergies or any other medical how important it is to talk to your conditions. Bring physician anesthesiologist before your full list a procedure to fully discuss your of medications health, even something you might to the meeting, not think is relevant,” said Jeffrey and don’t forget Plagenhoef, M.D., ASA president. to include your Viva
vitamins and supplements. * Your use of recreational or illicit drugs - These substances can have a significant impact on your reaction to medications used to provide anesthesia and can affect the amount of anesthetic and pain medications you may require. * Your experience with anesthesia - If you’ve had a bad reaction with anesthesia, pain medication or anesthesia side effects in the past (or a family member has), it’s important to tell your physician anesthesiologist. * Your fears - Let your physician anesthesiologist know if you’re afraid of surgery or anesthesia. * Your questions - Write down your questions and bring them with you to be sure everything you’d like to know is discussed. * Your recovery - The physician anesthesiologist continues to care for you after surgery, so ask how any pain will be managed. The Best Advice Mom, Dad, & Captain Kirk I’m part of the television generation. It’s possible the Howdy Doody kids are the real first-gen couch potatoes. I was in kindergarten when Sesame Street debuted. I enjoyed Mr. Moose’s pranks on Captain Kangaroo and I was there when video killed the radio star with the launch of MTV. The vast array of television and movie characters, fictional or otherwise, became friends and teachers. Before you think that’s weird, it’s actually a common situation. Back in the 1970s, Marcus Welby, MD was a popular television show. Lead actor Robert Young received letters every week asking him to cure some mysterious ailment. Television is intimate; meaning it’s right in your home like a parent and other live-in family members.
My parents shared many words of wisdom. TV and movie characters filled the gaps in areas where my parents didn’t have the expertise. For instance, neither of them had been in outer space. The NASA moon launches gave scientific explanations on basic space survival, but the crew on the USS Enterprise who showed how to LIVE in space. Mr. Spock showed logic and thought processing, Dr. McCoy was an icon of caring, and Captain Kirk was a role model on how to be heroic wearing a ripped shirt. Sadly, my mom kept me from wearing a bed sheet as a cape to be the neighborhood Caped Crusader. My mom showed how to keep my room clean. The part with me actually cleaning my room was another matter. Hiding things was much easier thanks to Hogan’s Heroes and Secret Agent Maxwell Smart. Sometimes it worked and other times resulted in me being a bad boy. James Bond also
contributed to my espionage skills. Even more important: Bond was the epitome of suave. Kissing the girl one moment and karate chopping the bad guys the next. My dad is a great teacher how to be a gentleman and ways to charm the ladies. Although there was an “Ew!” moment years ago when my mom said he was an octopus while they were dating. Yeah…ew! Television characters continue to be a good teacher even in my adult years. I learned how to do a formal table setting in the 1990s from Animaniacs and “The Etiquette Song.” You can find the video online. We learn things from different people and sources every day. Some of the advice is good, sometimes it leads us to trouble. John Safin is President and CEO of the Southwest Valley Chamber of Commerce., Southwestvalleychamber.org.

Protect Your Identity 4 tips to help protect your identity this tax season Tax season is a busy time for everyone. From accountants and small business owners to families and individuals, especially as more people choose to file their taxes themselves. Unfortunately, it’s also a busy time of year for cybercriminals who use the flurry of activity to swindle sensitive personal information from unsuspecting victims. Take for example, Melissa, a marketing manager from Chandler, who last year received an alert from her online tax filing service that her account password had been changed. But she dismissed the notification as a mistake. “Two days later I got an alert from LifeLock about a credit card that I hadn’t opened.” Thinking this was strange, Melissa followed up with her tax filing service and found that a criminal had accessed her account, stolen enough personal information to open a credit account in her name and redirected her tax return to another account. Fortunately, Melissa was able to resolve her case but she is just one of a staggering number of individuals who’ve fallen victim to criminals lurking the web. According to research from Symantec, cybercriminals launched more than 1 million web attacks against internet users every day in Viva
2015. While this statistic may seem shocking, there are things you can do to help protect yourself and your identity from cybercriminals. Start by applying these four simple tips to keep your personal information away from cybercriminals this tax season: 1. File your taxes as early as possible. The sooner you file your taxes, the harder it will be for criminals to file taxes on your behalf for a refund, which a thief can do with only your date of birth and Social Security Number. If you want some extra protection this tax season, consider contacting the IRS to see if you’re eligible for an Identity Protection PIN. It’s a sixdigit code that is assigned to you by the IRS to help prevent misuse of your SSN on fraudulent federal income tax returns. 2. If you’re filing your taxes online, use a secure Wi-Fi connection or a Virtual Private Network (VPN). One of the best ways you can help protect yourself when e-filing is to use a secure internet connection and not a public Wi-Fi network. If you are not sure about the security of your internet connection, use a VPN an easy-to-use technology that ensures a secure connection.
and/or financial information through email, text messages or social media sites. If you receive a letter in the mail and you’re not sure if it’s legitimate, use the IRS lookup tool to find your letter: www.irs.gov/individuals/irs-noticeor-letter-for-individual-filers 4. If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, ask for their name, badge number and call back number. Report the call to the U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at 1-800-366-4484 and provide this information to confirm the authenticity of the caller’s request. If the caller isn’t willing to provide this information, hang up and report the incident to the IRS. If you believe you’ve been the victim of an IRS scam, you may also report this to the TIGTA at their website: www.treasury.gov/ tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml. Don’t delay in doing so. After all, it’s your identity and it is up to you to protect it every single day.
3. Remember the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) only communicates through the United States Postal Service. They will never request personal April 2017 25
