From Me To You...

If you are privileged to live long enough, you will come to realize that everything changes.

Relationships change, circumstances change, heck even people change. The key in life is to roll with those changes, learn from them when you can, and move along to the next phase in your life.

Personally I usually enjoy change. As an optimist I will always look for the good in a situation or person, and that means that even when something knocks me for a loop I will dust myself off and find the positive. In fact I have come to see change as a personal challenge. What can we do with this? Does it open up opportunities that were not there before? Moving across the country can be scary but what about the new best friend who is waiting to be discovered? Or the amazing vistas that you have only seen on a computer screen? What about the smell of creosote after it rains? OK, not everyone will like that one but I do!

Perhaps my love of change is inherited, my paternal grandmother lived in government housing and could not afford to buy a new house. So the people on her street would swap homes every few years. My uncle emigrated to New Zealand to effect change in his life - a poor farmer, he saw an opportunity to work for land in a new country and he lived Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

out his life as a contented kiwi farmer, with many acres to call his own.

I love moving, not the physical effort of the job, but the change and newness of a different situation thrills me. Of course moving is a time consuming and expensive proposition and is not always realistic, so when I am in one place for too long I start to change my house on the inside. Some would call it updating, for me it releases the pressure of ‘sameness’.

I have known people who have bought a home after visiting the model and placed their own versions of that furniture in exactly the same configuration as the home they first saw. Crazy.

And they kept it that way, for as long as they owned the house! Now that makes my head ache.

When my husband worked in corporate America and was away on business trips I would make the most dramatic changes. He would return to rooms painted different colors and furniture rearranged. I have even moved rooms around inside the house. One of our daughters commented that during her childhood she had a bedroom in almost every room of the house. True story. Now that he works from home I have to fly thing by him first. My long suffering husband has come to accept my need for change and usually agrees with my ideas although painting the kitchen white took me two years of persuasion, but as soon as the first door was done he agreed it was the right move.

Now that I think of it I can remember my father often using the phrase, “A change is as good as a rest.” I believe I have taken that expression to heart and I encourage you all to do the same.

On Our Cover

West Valley Wind Ensemble free concert March 22,2020 @ 3:00 pm, Eagle’s Nest Ballroom The West Valley Wind Ensemble (WVWE) is a 70-piece concert band comprised of volunteers who enjoy making music long past their high school and college years. The band began in the early 1990’s with just a few players, but quickly grew to the band it is today. By definition, a “Wind Ensemble” has the same instrumentation as a Concert Band but with fewer players. In several of the sections in our band we have one player on a part. An important part of our charter was to keep alive the early repertoire written for American Concert Bands, marvelous band transcriptions of orchestral repertoire and newer music written in those traditions. Programming for each concert seeks to find an enjoyable balance between musically challenging both the

band members and the audience with a lighter fare, including a march, of course.

Our members come from all walks of life and many of us are happy retirees, with four of us living right here in Pebble Creek. Steve Thomas, a retired high school principal in the Chicago area, has played clarinet with the band for 4 years. Steve also plays in the Surprise Pops Band and a clarinet choir called Cactus Clarinets and in the Estrella Mountain Community College Band.

Shirlee Lansing, also a clarinet player, joined the band 3 years ago, and is a retired Clinical Social Worker. Shirlee started playing the clarinet in the 4th grade and has played ever since, including in a college band and community bands in Bloomington, MN before coming to Pebble Creek. She currently plays in the Arizona Winds, the Surprise Pops Band and Cactus Clarinets, in addition to the WVWE. Darrel Bjornson plays trombone in WVWE and also was one of the original members of the Pebble Creek Big Band, playing for 15 years. Darrel also plays in the Estrella Mountain Community College Band.

Darrel served in the military for 24 years and, after retirement, joined the faculty in the College of Pharmacy at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa before moving to Pebble Creek in 2003.

Another trombone player, who still plays with both WVWE and the Big Band is Larry Tallant.

Larry has lived in Pebble Creek since 2007 and is a retired engineer for Lockheed-Martin. Larry comes from Denver, CO. WVWE will be performing a concert at PebbleCreek Resort Community in the Eagle’s Nest Ballroom on Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 3:00 pm. Snacks will be provided and beverages can be purchased at the Eagle’s Nest Lounge and brought into the concert. Our concerts are free. Please bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to the Valley View Food Bank in Surprise with whom have a strong relationship.

We are a non-profit 501(3)(c) and are funded by donations we receive at our concerts or contributions online or by mail.

Ditching cable for “streaming” services is all the rage these days. Despite what one may think, it’s easy to make the move from traditional cable or satellite TV to a highly affordable TV-watching experience. But where do you start? If you’re thinking of cutting the cable cord and don’t want to go cold turkey, you can test the waters with this quick-start guide that will prepare you for the jump to being a full-fledged “Cord Cutter” at a fraction of the cost of cable. 1. What do you want to watch?

Love nail-biting true crime dramas? Are you a romantic who needs to see every heart-warming ending? Perhaps a sports nut who needs to see every game? There are streaming TV services that appeal to every appetite, and you can subscribe to more than a few for a lot less than traditional cable or satellite. It is easy to imagine a bundle of services that is perfect for you, yet costs less than what you’re paying now.

3. How to watch Chances are, you already have a number of ways to stream TV in your home. There are apps for computers, smartphones, tablets; and of course a slew of devices like Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV. If you have a smart TV, you can watch streaming content directly on your TV via an internet connection. If you need to pick up a streaming device, it’s a one-time cost.

4. An antenna for local With a one-time purchase of an HDTV antenna, you can grab all the free, over-the-air channels available in your area and bring it directly to your TV. To find out how many local channels will be available using an over the air TV antenna, go to AntennaWeb.org and enter your address.

There’s a ton of additional information available online about the next steps, but once you have a high-speed internet connection and a streaming TV device, all you need to do is decide what to watch!

2. Check out free trials Not sure what streaming TV services are best for you? Try some free trials. Almost all TV streaming services offer free trials, so you can pick a couple to try out before making any commitments. If a service requires a credit card to sign up for a free trial, don’t panic. There should be the option to cancel before the trial ends and you are charged anything.

Support For Veterans

Many veterans seeking to transition from military service to civilian life face barriers to employment, often because their military experience doesn’t translate well to a traditional resume. But veterans with disabilities face an even bigger barrier. Traditional hiring and employment fairs are ineffective for many disabled veterans. Veterans with disabilities, especially those who are significantly injured or ill, are less likely to attend large public events with crowds or in locations that are not easily accessible.

Unemployment and underemployment of veterans robs society of the valuable skills and strong work ethic of the veteran population and also impacts veterans and their families in myriad ways. Lack of employment or regular engagement in activities can lead to increased rates of depression, low self-esteem, anxiety, and other health issues for veterans and their families.

Paralyzed Veterans of America’s employment program, PAVE (Paving Access for Veterans Employment), specializes in helping veterans

with disabilities find meaningful employment.

PAVE employment analysts and vocational rehabilitation counselors work with clients to overcome barriers to employment at all stages of their life and career. This assistance is offered free of charge not just to disabled veterans, but to any veteran, transitioning service member, spouse, or caregiver across the country.

PAVE’s newest service, PAVE Connect, is a virtual engagement initiative that bridges a critical gap for veterans by reaching those who do not have the time, means, or ability to attend traditional employment or educational events.

Through PAVE Connect, members of the veteran community can: * Interact with PAVE employment experts through virtual meetings. * Meet employers eager to hire from the military and veteran community and gain insight to understand opportunities available within their organizations. * Access an online library of timely, relevant career information - on their schedule and from any device. * View recorded presentations and access other tools and resources on demand. * Discover a wide range of meaningful education, volunteer, and employment opportunities.

The PAVE program, with offices across the country, already assists veterans where they are at their time of need, rather than asking clients to come to them. In addition, if a client has a disability, PAVE experts will consult the whole way with the veteran and their employer to make sure adaptive equipment is available and compatible. Burst of Music Burst of Music is back for its 13th consecutive year to bring you a whole new and more energetic show.

PebbleCreek’s own “big band” will be on stage at the Renaissance Theater from March 26th through the 28th…that’s three nights only. Tickets go on sale online March 7th at 8:00 A.M. *Please note tickets will be for sale online only…there will be no in person sales prior to performance nights. To purchase tickets

online go to the HOA website. Cost is $16.50 each including fees.

Under the direction of their new director, Jeff Buda, the Musicians will be performing a wide variety of numbers including pop, swing and jazz…but with an all new and exciting format. Making her debut as the first regular featured soloist with the Big Band is noted “songster” Karen Follett.

This year’s performance promises to be the best ever… you won’t want to miss it. So re-member March 7th at 8:00 A.M. when tickets go on sale and will continue thereafter until 5:00 P.M. the evening of each performance.

If there are seats still available on the nights of the concerts they will be sold in the lobby beginning at 6:30 P.M. Last year each night was “sold out,” so get your tickets early.

On a personal note: This “reporter” was fortunate to be able to sit in on a recent rehearsal session and all I can say is WOW! “In the Cool,Cool, Cool of the Evening, I’ll tell them you’ll be there!” BURST OF MUSIC XIII…you’ll agree just keeps getting better and better.

Healthcare Powers Of Attorney The medical healthcare power of attorney identifies an agent, a trusted family member or friend, who can give consent to medical treatment if you cannot. If insurance requires transfer to a skilled nursing facility before going home from the hospital, your agent can arrange that for you.
