From Me To You... You know that feeling you get when something bad happens, or is about to happen? The pit in your stomach. The feeling that you have a gaping chasm opening up inside and all hope is lost. A sense of impending doom.

youth I have felt misgivings. A sense that something was not quite right. Perhaps it was that person walking towards me or a noise behind me. I learned to trust those instincts and duck into a storefront or cross the street to a well lit area, or to just book it out of there as fast as I could. Living in New York in the early 90’s you learned to be street savvy pretty quickly.

Quite dramatic I know, but about this time last year I felt that all was not well in the world. I talked to my husband about it at the time, dismissing it as worrying for no good reason. Well it turns out that maybe I did have a good reason. Not that I knew Covid-19 was going to cause a global pandemic and turn our world inside out forever. But I knew, deep down, something was ‘off’.

Now my instincts revolve more around my children. Even though they are mostly grown up and living a life away from home I still get uneasy when I know they are driving long distances, or even just driving late at night. My parental radar goes into overdrive and nothing is right until I know all my ‘babies’ are safe. Silly, right? There is nothing I could do to help them if they did get into trouble, but nevertheless I am on high alert.

We often have these gut feelings and as a woman I know them well. Although it took living in America to bring them out of me. Walking down a dark, deserted street at night in my

Perhaps it is also because my children are still in the phase of their lives where they truly believe themselves to be indestructible. The feeling that they can conquer the world and nothing can harm them. Perhaps that is because I have been in front of them, every step of the way so far, clearing the path and reducing the risks, checking for danger before they see anything amiss. Perhaps it is endemic in all young adults. Whatever the reason it is an important right of passage. Without that lack of fear I would never have blazed a trail across the world, bringing me to this country and creating the life I have now. So pay attention to that little voice in your head — but don’t let it stop you from conquering your own challenges and getting the life you want. Business 411 When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.”

pricing can return. For some advertisers that don’t give cost incentives, they can change the ad message to being expensive but worth it. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides. Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/ or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share. Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.” -----------------------------We at Estrella Publishing are open for business and here working overtime to support our clients and potential future clients with their marketing strategy.

There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown. • The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. It also allows for advertisers to re-position a brand or introduce Call / text 623-594-9283 with any questions a new product. • Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times. • Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, which can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession. • When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current – and possibly future – sales. An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.” An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits. Another strategy used by marketers is changing the ad message and using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. Some advertisers will offer interest-free loans, coupons or special promotions to boost sales and market share. When the economy bounces back, regular Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

Adopt A Pet

Before you foster or adopt - and especially when considering a pet as a gift - it’s best to make sure you’re ready not just for the fun and companionship pets can bring, but also for the responsibilities. Preparing thoughtfully in advance will ensure you and your new pet are happy and comfortable at home. “This year has been so unexpected, but one constant is that animals always bring positivity and comfort,” says veterinarian Dr. Marty Becker, founder and CEO of Fear Free, in partnership with BISSELL. “If you’re preparing to adopt or foster a pet, it’s important to ease their transition into your home.” Here are questions to ask before bringing a new furry friend home. 1. Does your living situation allow pets? If you live in a rental, there are likely animal rules. Even if pets are allowed, additional fees might be added to help pay for possible damage or cleaning. Be sure to identify any such limitations before adopting or fostering a pet.

at home. However, since we might not always be remote, it’s important to plan for changes in schedules down the road. Will there be time in your family’s schedule in the future, so your pet will have all of their needs met - including companionship and attention? Consider adding special comfy beds or leaving a radio on to help your pet adjust to being home alone. Get them gradually used to being on their own by taking short outings without them - leading up to the time when family members need to return to the workplace. 4. Can you create a relationship with a veterinarian? If you don’t already have a veterinarian in mind, start looking for one in your area. Ask pet-loving friends, neighbors and family for recommendations. Neighborhood social media groups often have great suggestions, too. Once you find a vet, call ahead to inquire about wellness visits, and establish a relationship so you’re prepared.

Also, make sure there’s room for your pet to have their own space. “One immediate change you can make in your home is to create a dedicated space for your new pet with bedding, food, water and toys to help them feel safe,” recommends Becker. 2. Do you have everything you need? With pets come supplies: food and dishes, toys, bedding, litter boxes (for cats), leashes (for dogs), plus cleaning supplies. Make sure you’re prepared with enough funds to support the ongoing needs of your four-legged pal. 3. Will you have time to spend with your pet? Now it may feel like you have plenty of time to take walks, play with pets and cuddle, especially while family members are working and learning Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

Spending time preparing now will create more time to relax and play with your new best friend later. Being a pet parent is a rewarding gift especially now - because it offers opportunities to increase your capacity for responsibility, compassion and play. And if you’re fostering, you’ll have the special opportunity to prepare a pet for their future forever home. January 2021

Napa At Home From canceled plans and trips to work from home and beyond, you’ve likely had to sacrifice a lot in 2020. But while you’re staying at home and doing your best to be safe during a pandemic, there’s one thing you shouldn’t have to compromise on - high-quality wine. And if you’re a seasoned wine drinker, you know that Napa Valley is the place to be.

“Napa Valley’s reputation is globally recognized, but its output is remarkably small,” says Elizabeth Vianna, winemaker at Chimney Rock Winery. “We produce only 4% of California’s total wine production, but that 4% represents the very best California has to offer.” So, if you can’t have a travel adventure for the holidays this year, Napa Valley can come to you. Here’s how to bring a little luxury to your life and experience wine country without ever leaving your home.

1. Set the mood with music Turn up the music and get ready to relax. Choose your go-to wine tasting playlist or search for one that’s already been created wherever you listen to music. It’s all about what gets you in the wine-tasting mood. 2. Try a virtual tasting Escape to wine country with a virtual visit to prestigious Napa Valley wineries. You can even purchase wine to taste during the session that will be shipped directly to your home or can be sent to a loved one as a holiday gift. 3. Treat yourself to a cinematic getaway Wine and film share a profound link: the ability of a single sip or scene to whisk your senses away to a wholly different time and place. After all: Wine, popcorn and a good movie makes for a great time, any night of the week. 4. Get cooking If you were really exploring Napa Valley, you’d be feasting on fresh, local fare for every meal. Whatever you choose to cook or order in from your favorite restaurant, don’t forget to select wines that pair well with your food choices.

Out Of Pocket Costs Whether or not you stay up to mark the new year, an expensive reality hits many Americans on Jan. 1: medical insurance deductibles reset to zero and out-of-pocket costs go up. Along with co-pays and coinsurance, those outof-pocket costs can put essential medications out of reach. Many people are forced to choose between paying bills, their medications, and putting food on the table. But there are ways to cut those high out-ofpocket costs. The Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation, a national charity that provides financial assistance to help people pay for their prescription medications, offers these tips for reducing your out-of-pocket costs for the lifesaving medications you need. Talk to your healthcare team. Be honest with your doctor and pharmacist about the challenge of affording your medications. It may be difficult for you to talk about your finances, but remember, your healthcare team is on your side. Let them know what you can afford and they may be able to tailor a treatment plan that fits within your budget.

Sign up for FundFinder. FundFinder is a free web-based app developed by the PAN Foundation that connects you with a charitable patient assistance foundation that could help pay the out-of-pocket costs for your prescription medications. Shop around. You’d be surprised how much drug costs can vary from pharmacy to pharmacy. Make a few calls to make sure you’re not paying more than you have to for the medications you need. And ask about discounts and coupons, like the NeedyMeds discount card, which could help you save up to 80% off prescription drug prices. Check your state’s assistance programs. Many states have assistance programs for residents who are having trouble paying for their medications. The first place to start is with your state’s department of health. They can tell you about the programs that are available and whether you qualify. They also may have information about other programs in your area that are designed to help people afford their medication.

Look into ‘Extra Help.’ Medicare beneficiaries may qualify for programs like, Extra Help, also known as the Low-Income Subsidy program. This program can significantly reduce your prescription costs. Ask for generics. Many name-brand drugs now have generic equivalents, especially if the drugs you’re taking have been on the market for a while. Generics are significantly cheaper than their name-brand versions. And don’t worry. Generics are run through the same safety and efficacy tests by the FDA to ensure their quality and effectiveness.

Looking ahead to the new year should be full of hope, not worries about affording prescription medications. You can learn more about patient assistance charities like PAN and the ways you can get help paying for your prescription medical treatments at panfoundation.org. January 2021

Chronic Conditions? While some people with a COVID-19 infection may experience relatively mild symptoms, the disease is of greater concern for the 56% of Americans who may have at least one risk factor linked to an increased chance of complications.

Two increasingly common risk factors for COVID-19 are obesity and type 2 diabetes, which in some cases may be improved or even reversed with appropriate lifestyle modifications. As the COVID-19 situation evolves, it is important to recognize that daily decisions related to diet and activity may make a difference in the severity of infection. Research shows people with existing diabetes whose blood sugar is well controlled may require fewer medical interventions and are more likely to recover from COVID-19. Here are tips to consider related to obesity and type 2 diabetes amid the COVID-19 pandemic: Monitor your body mass. While body mass index (BMI) has potential shortcomings this calculation of height compared to weight may provide a

helpful measure to monitor. In fact, people with even moderately elevated BMI levels may have an increased risk of developing complications related to diabetes. Use interval eating. Also called intermittent fasting or time-restricted eating, this approach alternates periods of fasting and non-fasting during the day or across the week. People interested in this approach to eating should discuss it with their health care provider, as medication regimens may need to be adjusted. After-meal walks. People seeking to better control their blood sugar levels and weight should also consider short walks after eating meals or snacks. Whenever possible, make time for a 15-minute walk after each meal to help reduce the risk of blood sugar spikes. By considering these tips, these challenging times may serve as a catalyst for people to help improve their health and reduce the possible risk of complications from COVID-19.

Non-Stress Beneficiary Deed To Avoid Probate

If you want one or two adults to receive your home or real estate upon your death, a Beneficiary Deed can be a non-stress way to avoid probate. A Beneficiary Deed is in essence a “pay on death designation” for real property. A Beneficiary Deed avoids probate without giving up any present ownership interest in the property, like joint tenants with right of survivorship does. The Beneficiary Deed is fully revocable. Where there are co-owners, the surviving owner can revoke the Beneficiary Deed. The owner retains control. The owner does not need to consult the beneficiaries or be concerned about the beneficiaries’ creditors (unlike joint tenants).

Covid-19 Vaccine COVID-19: What is an Emergency Use Authorization?

According to the FDA, an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) is a mechanism to facilitate the availability and use of medical countermeasures, including vaccines, during public health emergencies, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic.1 An EUA allows the use of medical products, not yet approved, when there are no adequate, approved and available alternatives.2 Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the FDA has issued EUAs for select medical products and drugs it believes may help address the impact of the virus on the American public.3 What are the criteria for a COVID-19 vaccine candidate to receive an EUA? When the Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary has issued a public health emergency the FDA may issue an EUA after it has determined that the following requirements are met2: * Based on available scientific evidence, including data from clinical trials, it is reasonable to believe that the product may be effective to prevent, diagnose or treat serious or lifethreatening diseases or conditions that can be caused by SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19).

* The identified and potential benefits of the product, when used to diagnose, prevent or treat the identified serious or life-threatening disease or condition, outweigh the identified and potential risks of the product. * There is no adequate, approved and available alternative to the product for diagnosing, preventing or treating the disease or condition. Who will have access to a vaccine that receives an EUA? In the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will recommend the allocation of vaccine doses and who should receive a vaccine first, if there are not enough doses of the vaccine for everyone. On December 1, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) made initial recommendations on who should be offered COVID-19 vaccination in the initial phase of the U.S. COVID-19 vaccination program, while there is limited vaccine supply, and recommended that healthcare personnel and residents of long-term care facilities should be prioritized first.4 Will an EUA mean that the vaccine has been tested for safety? Issuance of an EUA for a COVID-19 vaccine requires a determination by the FDA that the vaccine’s known and potential benefits outweigh its known and potential risks based on data from at least one well-designed Phase 3 clinical trial that demonstrates the vaccine’s safety and efficacy in a clear and compelling manner.2 An EUA for COVID-19 vaccines will be assessed by the FDA on on a case-by-case basis considering all available scientific evidence.2 “The FDA’s Emergency Use Authorization process serves an absolutely critical role during public health emergencies. Throughout the COVID-19 global pandemic, we have welcomed the opportunity to work collaboratively with the FDA, CDC and regulatory agencies around the world to help fight the COVID-19 global pandemic,” noted Donna Boyce, vice president of Global Regulatory Affairs for Vaccines at Pfizer.

Stay Safe!

Avoid prolonged sitting. Even if you must set a timer to remind yourself, take frequent breaks from sitting and engage in rejuvenating strolls or take part in activities that involve standing.

By now, most seniors are aware that they’re among the most vulnerable demographic groups when it comes to contracting COVID-19. That said, a recent nationwide poll by Tivity Health a national provider of senior fitness, nutrition and healthy lifestyle solutions, indicates many are probably not getting the exercise they need to maintain optimal health. Maintaining regular exercise during COVID-19 need not be difficult. If you’re a senior wanting to maintain effective workouts each day, here are some tips you can follow even if you’re practicing social isolation.

Use others as motivation. If you feel more motivated when not exercising all by yourself, you might optimize FaceTime, Zoom or even a quick phone call to interact with fitness-minded others as you work out at home.

Start slowly. If you haven’t been exercising, you’ll want to ease into your new routine gradually. You should jump-start your new regimen with safe exercises like light weightlifting and taking walks (keeping distance from others for safety).

Whether you’re staying at home or practicing safe social distancing while out and about, there’s no need to give up the exercise that can help you maintain optimal health during the pandemic. Take steps now to ensure you’re taking good care of yourself through ageappropriate workouts and movement.

Subscribe to a digital exercise program. You do not need to leave your home to exercise each day. That’s especially true if you sign up for a high-quality digital regimen that fits well with your exercise goals and preferences.

Check out local fitness centers. Before attending local gyms, learn what they’re doing to keep their customers safe and to align with recommended CDC guidelines. If you feel safe enough to participate, exercise in open spaces where you can maintain six feet of distance from others.

NO! Reverse mortgages have insurance automatically built in to protect the family. Most homes continue to increase in value over time leaving even more equity for family. Even if the property value should decrease below what is owed, the family can acquire the property for 5 percent less than market value regardless of how much is owed or how low the value may be.
