From Me To You... It’s January already and you know what that means? Resolutions! Ideas of things you want to improve upon, or achieve, in the next calendar year.

I usually try not to make any resolutions because I feel I am setting myself up for failure. If they were things I could do, wouldn’t I already be doing them? However, I am always up for a good challenge, so this year I am determined to try and run a 5k. Oh boy, now I’ve put it out there for everyone to see. I have many friends who run, they do 5ks, 10ks and I even know a couple who ran a marathon this year. (Well she was disappointed in herself as she only did the half because she had no time to train, but for heavens sakes if I could run 13 miles without training I would be pleased as punch!) In order to see if 5 kilometers was even possible I tried running 3 to start. I would say I managed 2/3s of it at a decent pace and had to walk the rest. In my humble opinion that’s how far a normal person goes without training. In theory I am fit enough to do the race, but my stamina is what gets me. I have been working out consistently over the last year and my strength has improved dramatically (not to brag but I can lift over 100lbs with my legs and a whopping 45lbs with my puny arms) and health-wise I am ready. Now I have to increase the dreaded cardio to get my lungs to stop screaming at the mile mark.

the 17 obstacles my stomach plummeted. I had no choice at that point, it was run or get trampled under the enthusiastic feet of the other runners. I got through the race and thought the easy part was in front of me. Boy was I wrong, here came the obstacles. The first obstacle was a swim under logs in a pool filled with water and ice. Ice! Fine. Then came a tunnel. In the ground. I took one look at the tiny hole in the ground and thought, “There is no way I can fit in there!” But I did. And then I found some relief. It was quiet and dark in there. No-one to see if I was moving. So I rested my head and relaxed. Until I heard the next contestant behind me army crawling towards my refuge. The race ended with a leap over a fire pit. At that point I couldn’t imagine jumping over anything but somehow I managed. I am determined to train and not to repeat my mistakes next time. One might even call that a resolution. Catherine Uretsky Editor, Viva magazine catherine@estrellapartners.com 623-594-9283

I have done a 5k in the past, but I think I was so traumatized by the experience it has me a little gun shy. I signed up for the Gladiator 5k Fun Run for charity - and to be honest because my friend and I had drunk a glass of wine or two and thought it would be a great idea. We planned on training and of course did nothing to prepare. So when the day loomed over me, I knew I was in trouble. When I got to the course and realized it was a 5k up into the Estrellas before Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

Viva Values

A Facebook group is a page created for an organization, community or business to promote activities. Users can then join the group and post their thoughts on a wall and interact through discussion threads. Groups are a great way to connect with friends and neighbors and have discussions that are relevant to your community such a local business, school activities, criminal activities, lost fur babies, request recommendations, etc.... The main purpose of groups is to help Facebook users socialize around any topic in their community. Once inside the Group, Facebook works only slightly different than your profile. A Group does not use the timeline but rather displays posts in direct chronological order, similar to the pre-timeline manner. Also, members of the Group can see who has seen a post, which is a unique feature for Group accounts.

Why The Glass Matters Wine connoisseurs know something even more important than facts about vintages and varietals: It makes a big difference how your wine is served. From the correct temperature to the glass you drink from, how any wine is presented can change the entire experience.

And it’s not just about aesthetics - although a beautiful glass may enhance your visual experience, the size and shape of a wine glass can alter any wine’s aroma and taste, for better or worse. The size and shape of the glass affects not just how the wine responds to its environment (exposure to oxygen and temperature, for example), but how we drink it. The way you hold the glass, how you tilt your head (forward or back - consider a martini glass versus a wine glass), where your nose is centered as you sip and where on your tongue and palate the wine first hits can all impact your experience of the wine. What do you need to know so your guests will experience your wine at its very best? Here are some guidelines:

Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

Red wines In general, the best glasses to enhance the bigger and bolder flavors of most red wines should be taller and have a larger bowl than glasses meant for serving lighter or more delicate wines. Larger glasses allow a wine to breathe more and permit the wine’s flavors and aromas to develop more fully.

White wines The ideal glass for most white wines will be U-shaped, with a smaller bowl than when serving red wines. One of the reasons is that it helps prevent the wine from warming up too quickly, as whites are best served somewhat chilled. The more upright shape of the glass also allows aromas to be released sufficiently - without losing any aroma - for these lighter wines. Sparkling wines When serving champagne, prosecco or other sparkling wines to your guests, flutes or a tulip shaped glass are recommended. These glass shapes allow the chilled wine to stay cooler longer. Whereas a wider glass would offer too much surface area, letting the delightful bubbles fizzle out more quickly. A narrower glass helps to preserve the carbonation of your sparkling wine longer.

Up, Up And Away! Temps have cooled off in Phoenix. The sun will be out early in January 2020 when the hot air balloon races and Street FoodFest return to the Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Arizona. For the third year, the Goodyear Ballpark will play host to the 9th Annual Arizona Balloon Classic featuring the Street FoodFest and will benefit the Valley of the Sun United Way as a Community Partner. The Valley of the Sun United Way’s mission is to champion youth success and break the cycle of poverty for Valley families. “We fight to end hunger in the classroom, to end homelessness, and to put a stop to financial instability.” A portion of ticket sales will go directly back to the Valley of the Sun United Way programs. The Arizona Balloon Classic is Arizona’s premier hot air balloon race & festival and the only race in town, will attract up to 20,000 fans and consumers. In 2020, the Arizona Balloon Classic will consist of multiple “Hare and Hound” Hot Air Balloon races. Actual hot air balloon racing consists of multiple competitions in order to get the closest to the center of a target, which will determine who the winner of the “Race” is. The “Hare” balloon leaves first to place the “Target” and the rest of the balloons; the “Hounds” chase the “Hare” to the target. The “Hound” balloons are subjected to dropping markers onto a large target on the ground. The closer the marker is to the center of the target; the better chances of qualifying for the $2,500 cash purse. Sort of like darts from the sky, except you’re moving where the winds take you.

Races will be open to the public on Saturday, January 25th and Sunday, January 26th. Evening “Glows” on Friday night, January 24th and Saturday night, January 25th. *Weather permitting and all events are subject to change. The event will be held at the Goodyear Ballpark (1933 S. Ballpark Way – NE corner of Estrella Parkway & Goodyear Blvd. in Goodyear, Arizona). In addition, there will be hot air balloon rides, hot air balloon tether rides, live music, food, beer tents, FREE inflatables at the QT family fun zone, stunt bike riders, fireworks and more. Advance ticket on sale right now at www.abcfest. com. Visit - www.abcfest.com or www.facebook. com/ArizonaBalloonClassic for additional details and updates. If you would like additional information about this topic, please contact Tim Matykiewicz, (480)560-9095 or tim@azeventsgroup.com. About Valley of the Sun United Way Since 1925, Valley of the Sun United Way has unified diverse partners, donors, business supporters, nonprofits, government and faithbased communities to build a stronger Valley for us all. United Way and its 90,000 donors, 400 business supporters and 5,000 volunteers fight to break the cycle of poverty by ensuring children and youth succeed, ending hunger and homelessness, and increasing the financial stability of families. Join the fight, visit vsuw.org.

On Saturday and Sunday mornings, up to 25 hot air balloons will participate and partake in the competitions that are set up. Spectators and fans are encouraged to watch the hot air balloons as they participate in the “Hare and Hound” races.

The Right Pill While the effort to sustain better overall health is commendable, there is skepticism among healthcare experts regarding the medical benefits of dietary supplements. When caring for your health, it’s important to know the critical differences between prescription medicine, overthe-counter medicine and dietary supplements. Prescription medicine is a pharmaceutical drug that legally requires a medical prescription to be dispensed. In the United States, before prescription medicine can be marketed and sold it must be tested rigorously and deemed safe, effective and manufactured to highquality drug standards by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The prerequisite of medical practitioner oversight reflects the potential benefits and risks of prescription medicine and the importance of taking it appropriately. Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs are drugs that consumers can use without prescription, based on the assumed ability of the consumer to selfdiagnose the condition and then use the OTC drug by themselves without medical monitoring.

Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

OTC drug candidates are also assessed by the FDA for safety and effectiveness. Often drug manufacturers submit data to the FDA showing a drug is appropriate for self-administration accompanied by studies showing that the product’s labeling can be read, understood, and followed by the consumer without the guidance of a health care provider. Additionally, concerns about side effects can sometimes be managed by approving OTC drugs at lower doses than their prescription counterparts. A notable example is ibuprofen, which launched as a prescription drug in 1969 and became an OTC drug in 1983. Dietary supplements are not prescription drugs and are classified by the FDA as food. As such, they are not intended to treat disease and their safety, efficacy and manufacturing quality have not been reviewed or approved by the FDA. Dietary supplements are “products taken by mouth that contain a dietary ingredient such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and herbs or botanicals, as well as other substances that can be used to supplement the diet.” They can sound very appealing as they promote hope and possibilities. In part, this is because advertising of dietary supplements is not subject to the restrictions and disclosures of prescription drug advertising. Consumers need to know that when a product label says it “may work,” it hasn’t necessarily proven to the FDA that it is effective. With so many options and perceived “solutions” in front of consumers today, it’s critical that you check with your healthcare professional if you have a condition that requires a “therapy.” Only a healthcare practitioner should be providing medical guidance on what you should take given your specific medical needs and 03/31/20 history. Home Sweet Home Here are some healthy behaviors and design tips to help you bring nature’s sanctuary indoors.

Fill your home with photos of nature Surrounding yourself with images of nature can have a positive effect on wellness. Try framing some photos of special memories in nature like a hike with your family, beach sunset or mountain view. Let in more fresh air and natural light Today’s homes are built tighter and more sealed, which means they trap toxins from daily living - such as cooking, cleaning, pets and more - inside. Adding skylights that can open is a simple home renovation project to improve fresh air flow, helping rid indoor air of pollutants. Additionally, studies show that exposure to natural light helps to sync your circadian rhythm, allowing for better sleep at night. Fill your home with natural scents Up your chef game by using fresh herbs in your cooking that will fill your kitchen with natural fragrance. Making an indoor herb garden ensures you’ll always have some on hand. You can also incorporate fresh herbs into bouquets or wreaths. Meditate or do yoga in the morning Waking up with stretching or meditating is

a great way to prepare yourself for a successful day. Open the blinds or curtains on your windows and skylights to let in early morning light and help you feel invigorated and refreshed. Go green with your decor Reap the benefits of nature by bringing it inside, adding greenery or even fruit into your decor. The possibilities are endless - use a bowl of fresh fruit as a centerpiece or mix different sizes of pots to create a succulent gallery. Little touches of green in each room will go a long way. Use natural cleaning products Many common cleaning products have harsh chemicals that can be inhaled or absorbed into your skin. Combat the dangers of these toxins by switching to natural cleaning products. You’ll feel safer and more relaxed when your home is chemical-free. From boosting your home’s natural light to going green and adding plant life, it’s easy to turn your home into a natural oasis with these simple steps.
