From Me To You...

“He’s making a list and checking it twice...”

‘Tis the season for lists. Lists of gifts to buy and dishes to make, lists of holiday cards to send out, lists upon lists upon lists. Usually lists are helpful for me. They allow my mind to concentrate on whatever task is at hand without worrying about remembering the next task. In my work I make tons of lists! I have lists of ads to update, articles to write or proof, people to email, and then there is the Master List. I have a giant white board behind me in my office to keep me on track each month. It is mostly there as a checklist to make sure nothing gets missed in one of the magazines. But without that master list there would be things missing from one or more magazine that should have been there.

Then there are my mental lists of things I would like to do, things like movies I want to watch and books I want to read. I started to buy books theorizing that if I had them in front of me I would remember to read them. What actually happened is that I have a stack of books by my bed waiting to be read. The guilt is enormous.

The movie list is just a mental checklist. I see a preview and think, “Oh I would like to watch that when it comes out!” Of course by the time the movie is available I have completely forgotten about it.

I was scrolling through Netflix or Hulu, or one of the other online streaming services a couple of days ago and I came upon the movie The Meg. This movie is an update of the Jaws movies with a giant shark that terrorizes the locals. There is the ubiquitous beach full of tourists to churn through and the boat with well intentioned researchers to upend and eat. My favorite part was when they had finally caught and killed the monster after a terrifying chase scene. They were basking in that post victory glow and one of the scientists noticed that the bite of this shark did not seem to be big enough for the prints it had left on their underwater research facility.

Dum dum duuuum!!!! A new and even bigger shark leapt over their boat, eating several people and a chunk of the dead shark. Classic.

As much as I enjoyed the movie I have to admit it was truly terrible. Just awful. From the acting, to the plot, to the enhanced computer graphics.

Nothing was ever going to be award winning.

And yet I enjoyed the heck out of it. Partly because I love kitschy movies like that but mostly because it meant I could check it off my movie list. Finally I can get to the next thing on my list.

What is that you ask? Well I am going to pop some popcorn and cozy up with another wild ride, The Crown. Sure it may not have as much blood but it is just as vicious in its own way.

Business 411 When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.”

There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown.

• The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. It also allows for advertisers to re-position a brand or introduce a new product.

• Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times.

• Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, which can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession.

• When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current – and possibly future – sales.

An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.”

You’ve probably heard the buzz about probiotics helping to support gut health for humans - but did you know that probiotics can also help support the health of your pet? It turns out that both dogs and cats can benefit from probiotics as a regular part of their overall healthy, nutrientrich diet.

How do probiotics work?

The intestines contain billions of bacteria that are collectively called the “microbiome.” When an imbalance exists in the microbiome, it can cause digestive upset, leading to unpleasant symptoms - including excess gas or loose stool. That’s where probiotics come in. Probiotics are live, beneficial bacteria that help promote balance in the intestines - for humans and animals alike.

Prosciutto-Wrapped Shrimp with Smoked Paprika These are lavish-looking appetizers suitable for any party or get-together with your family.

Prep time 15 minutes; Cook time 6 minutes; Total time 21 minutes Ingredients 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1 and 1/2 teaspoons smoked paprika 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 pound jumbo shrimp (16/20 pound), shelled and deveined with tails left on 4 ounces very thinly sliced prosciutto sliced lengthwise into 1/2-inch strips

Instructions Preheat broiler and place cooking rack about 4 inches below heat source.

Spray rimmed baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray, or line with parchment paper.

In a small bowl, combine olive oil, paprika, and pepper. Add shrimp and toss until coated with the seasoned olive oil.

Wrap each shrimp with a strip of prosciutto, spiraling it up the shrimp until the shrimp is encased. Place shrimp on the prepared baking sheet.

Broil for 3 minutes until the tops are crispy, then turn and broil for another 3 minutes until the other side is browned.

Serve with little napkins, with the crispier side up.

Serves 6.

Help Local Seniors Did you know that by 2040, 20% of Americans will be 65 and older? As the population of older adults increases, it’s crucial to recognize and celebrate the rich depth of experience, talents and unique perspectives of such a large segment of the country. Yet, all too often, older people are overlooked and undervalued.

How to connect with seniors in your community 1. Call every week Make it a regular habit to call your older friend, neighbor or family member each week, so they have a friendly conversation to look forward to.

Ask them about their life, and tell them stories about yours. Gelb says this is an activity SCAN encourages by offering employees paid time off to volunteer.

2. Offer to pick something up Offering to get some groceries or a prescription for an older person can make their lives a lot easier. Don’t wait to be asked for help, as someone living alone may be reluctant to reach out. Just call and say, “I’m heading out to the store - can I pick something up for you?”

3. Help them stay safe Make sure any vulnerable person you know has face masks, hand sanitizer and the ability to order or ask for what they need. Mask up and offer to help them sanitize their doorknobs and phone after you drop by with a delivery. Help them use video conferencing to communicate with family members or friends.

4. Find ways to keep them engaged Drop by with a care package containing things they might like to do: a jigsaw puzzle, a deck of cards, large print books or crosswords. If you’re a good cook or have a green thumb, bring them a sample of your latest dish, offer to help with yard work, or bring them a plant that’s easy to care for - and that gives you a reason to stop by to check on them next time.

5. Be their tech support To communicate with the outside world, older people may have to rely on smartphones, computers or tablets that can sometimes be complicated or confusing to use. Teach them how to use apps like Zoom, set up a charging station for their phone or tablet, reboot devices so they run better - or just ask if they’re having any problems accessing their email or using their phone.

Lessons In Resilience Billionaire Mark Cuban was fired from his first job in software. Actress Jameela Jamil endured three life-changing medical diagnoses before breaking big in Hollywood. Musician John Legend was receiving unemployment checks while waiting for his big break.

Life is rarely linear or straightforward - even for some of the most successful people in the world. From minor speed bumps to cavernous potholes that force an abrupt U-turn, everyone experiences significant disruption to what they had imagined their life might look like. For many of us, 2020 has been one of those years.
