From Me To You... The world is full of distractions. As I sit down to write this column, for example, I am listening to music (brain building Grieg but admittedly it is a distraction), looking out the window at my neighbors washing their vehicle, smelling my breakfast cooling on the counter, and a myriad of other small things. One distraction that I love is television. In particular cooking shows. There is nothing more enjoyable to me than watching other people cook and thinking that if I had the time or the patience I too could make a perfect Mille Feuille or Beef Wellington. I am also realistic enough to know that I probably shouldn’t try them if I want to keep the waistline I have worked so hard for. I know some people who cook for others and do not eat anything themselves. Not me. I am the ‘taste a little as you cook then dig in when it is ready’ kind of person. One cooking show that I delight in is The Great British Baking Show. Not only is there a cornucopia of delightful food, but the contestants are a joy to watch. They all get their instructions and off they go. Then something wonderful happens. They start to help each other. Even the hosts get in on the act. “What can I do to help dear?” They often ask, grabbing a large bowl or sifting an ingredient. And when the time draws to a close all the contestants jump into action. “I’m done, love, what can I do?” Or “Let me put those on your plate for you!” One time a contestant noticed an oven that had not been turned on and she helpfully told her fellow baker as she turned it up to the correct temperature. I love it! It is their competitive camaraderie that makes me smile. My husband doesn’t understand it at all, shaking his head in bemusement. “Don’t they realize this is a competition?” he mumbles under his breath as he walks away.

high time to get back into the kitchen and whip up a country loaf. In my youth I baked all the time. I joke about Mille Feuille but I can actually make it, rough puff pastry and all. Now this baking occurred at a different altitude and hemisphere so the ingredients are not at all the same. Did you know that flour contains different amounts of gluten depending on where you are in the world?? Something to be aware of if you are making bread. Needless to say, my recipes no longer work, so I scoured the internet and set to baking. The first day (I had forgotten how long it takes to make bread) yielded one sprained wrist (kneading accident), flour in my eyes and a slightly dense loaf. Not to be defeated I ate it with as much butter as I could slap on it and the next day I adjusted my kneading, proving and baking times and I managed to bake a pretty decent loaf of bread. I think I may try to make Beef Wellington after all. Someday... Catherine Uretsky Editor, Viva magazine catherine@estrellapartners.com 623-594-9283

Viva Values

A Facebook group is a page created for an organization, community or business to promote activities. Users can then join the group and post their thoughts on a wall and interact through discussion threads. Groups are a great way to connect with friends and neighbors and have discussions that are relevant to your community such a local business, school activities, criminal activities, lost fur babies, request recommendations, etc.... The main purpose of groups is to help Facebook users socialize around any topic in their community. Once inside the Group, Facebook works only slightly different than your profile. A Group does not use the timeline but rather displays posts in direct chronological order, similar to the pre-timeline manner. Also, members of the Group can see who has seen a post, which is a unique feature for Group accounts.

Outreach

PebbleCreek Irish American Club’s Charitable Contributions Every March the PebbleCreek Irish American Club hosts a Charity Golf Tournament. This is the Club’s major fundraiser and we appreciate the generosity of our local businesses. The PCIAC has three pillars: social, education and charity. In previous years, the Club has donated to The New Life Center, The Southwest Lending Closet, and three high school students were awarded scholarships. This year, twenty-two applicants were interviewed and six deserving Millennium High School students were awarded scholarships of $500 or $1,000 each. In addition, The PCIAC presented two checks to two local charities and another check for $1,000 to the Irish Cultural Center in downtown Phoenix. The ICC provides a comprehensive and interactive cultural and learning experience linking Arizonians and visitors with the people of Ireland and other Celtic culture. They promote and preserve Irish and Celtic heritage and its influence with other cultures. There website is azirish.org. Mutts on a Mission received a check for $2,000. It is a local organization that was founded in 2008 by several residents of PebbleCreek. Their R.E.A.D. program (Reading Education Assistance Dogs) was started in 2017 to improve the literacy

Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

skills of children at the elementary level. They have experienced a significant improvement in student reading levels and confidence when they read a book to a dog. This is because there is no peer pressure and it is non- judgmental. Mutts on a Mission is currently volunteering at the Barbara B. Robey School, the Litchfield Elementary School, the Littleton Elementary School in Avondale, and the Odyssey Preparatory School in Buckeye and would like to expand. The Homeless Youth Connection. Founder Larry Cervarich, a resident of PebbleCreek, established this charity in 2010 after realizing there are many young people in our area that are homeless, but they still want and need to go to school. They have 12 paid staff, primarily Case Managers working in schools with students and over 30 volunteers. The HYC provides homeless youth with housing, food, clothing, hygiene items, school supplies and support to help them thrive. Their vision is “when you take away the worry about basic needs, homeless youth will thrive, graduate, and succeed.” The HYC is serving over 600 students in our area and anticipate that number to grow to 800 next year. Currently, there are 140 seniors in the schools where HYC is working and 120 will graduate this year. This is an amazing accomplishment! The PC Irish American Club donated $5,000 to the Homeless Youth Connection. Thank you to all that support our Charitable Golf Tournament. Not Ready For Fido? According to the ASPCA, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters every year. Adding a shelter pet to your family can be fulfilling, but what if you’re not ready or able to adopt?

1. Donate money or product. Many animal shelters and rescue organizations have direct donation links posted on their websites. Monetary donations go toward pet food, medical attention and vaccines for the animals. Animal shelters and rescue organizations also often create Amazon wish lists with desired products. Shelters typically ask for pet treats, toys and grooming supplies. 2. Provide a temporary home. An increased number of animals placed in shelters need foster care before they are ready

10

Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

to find their forever homes. Foster needs range from postop surgical care to puppy growth care and medical support. Food, medication and other supplies are typically provided when fostering. Contact your local shelter to fill out an application. 3. Volunteer at your local shelter or rescue organization. Animal shelters and rescue organizations offer numerous volunteer roles, such as dog walkers, adoption support and training support. Many positions don’t require prior experience and can be applied for on your local shelter or rescue organization’s website. Volunteer positions vary in expectations and demand, so there is a position for everyone. 4. Take photos of adoptable pets. Help animals find homes sooner by taking adoption photos for local shelters. Many people search for adoptable pets online, and with a great profile picture, animals have a greater chance at being adopted.

Celebrate Every Day

If you look at most people’s calendars, the days that stand out are the big ones - national holidays, anniversaries, graduations - in other words, those occasions that almost require special parties, rituals or ceremonies. But the truth is, it’s the everyday moments that people remember, and that are worth cherishing. Why wait for a “big” reason to celebrate the everyday act of living? Here are just a few ways you and your friends or family can elevate the small but special events that truly make life wonderful. Making a new friend You recently met someone you think could become a great friend. It gets harder to make new friends as adults, so why not nurture your new relationship in a memorable way? Invite him or her over for a casual lunch.

Nailing that presentation You or your partner just pulled off an amazing presentation for a meeting at work after stressing about it for days, so why not celebrate all that hard work with a special dinner together? Enjoy your favorite cheeseburgers, pork chops, juicy

steak or filet mignon - tonight is a good night to enjoy a favorite meal as your reward. Mid-week birthday While you wait for the blow-out birthday plans scheduled for the weekend, don’t just let the big day pass by without any festivities at all. Too busy to bake? Pick up a dark chocolate cake - or at least some cupcakes - at your local grocery store or bakery. Girls’ lunch How long has it been since you last invited your best pals over for a visit, just because you felt like it? Why not throw together a quick lunch party on the weekend for a couple of your favorite friends? Serve take-out on your most beautiful dishes - spending time together is the most important part, so don’t stress about the food! Find ways to commemorate - and treasure - the simple, ordinary days that mean the world to you.

Make A Difference

We are all busy and distracted these days, and it can often be difficult to find ways to make a difference to those less fortunate in our communities. However, today it is simpler than ever to give back, and you do not have to alter your hectic routine to make an impact.

Give back while you shop If you want to make a difference with your shopping dollars, look for retailers that give a percentage of their profits to those in need. Many retailers and grocery stores also provide shoppers the opportunity to donate to causes when they are at the checkout register. With just a couple of extra clicks, you can opt to add a small contribution to your total bill to provide resources to a worthy cause. Give while you work up a sweat Several apps on the market allow you to donate to your charity of choice for every mile you walk, run or bike - the miles can even add up as you carry your phone around all day. All you have to do is download an app, select your favorite charity & get moving!

Give back while you de-clutter Next time you join in on the Marie Kondo craze to clear out your closets, consider sparking even more joy by donating gently used items to a local nonprofit. Clothing and goods you no longer use can be life-changing for those in need. Give your time With crammed schedules, it can seem like a big commitment to volunteer, but today’s nonprofits offer flexible arrangements. Most nonprofits welcome any level of assistance, even one-time engagements or a couple of hours a month. Contact a local nonprofit you are interested in to ask about volunteering opportunities. Making a difference with your dollars or giving your time can feel great, and it can also be effortless. Find a way to make a difference that works for you - and then go for it!

Elevate your Evening

Whether you’re hosting a sit-down dinner, a family-style meal or a cocktail party, offer unique food and drink choices to suit the season. A charcuterie board is a great start - all you need to add are some stand-out drinks to make an impression.

1. Create a charcuterie board. Charcuterie boards can be appetizers or the main attraction at a cocktail party. Select cured meats like salami, smoked sausage and prosciutto along with with spreadable choices like pate, plus an array of cheeses. Choose softer, mild cheeses and harder, sharp cheeses to appeal to every palate. Add sliced French bread and/or crackers, with accompaniments like olives or fruit. Round out the board with little dishes of mustard, honey or quince paste. Get creative as you arrange everything on a board or platter. The idea is to provide guests with a variety of seasonal flavors they can mix and match in fun ways. 2. Punch up your party. Instead of adding bartender to your multitude of host duties, make a delicious Rum Punch ahead of time:

Rum Punch 3 ounces Angostura 5 Year Rum 1.5 ounces lime juice 3 teaspoons brown cane sugar 1 dash Angostura orange bitters 4 dashes Angostura aromatic bitters Garnish: lime wedge, grated nutmeg, maraschino cherry Shake all ingredients and strain into ice-filled glass. Garnish with lime, cherry and nutmeg. 3. Sugar and spice and all things nice. For an easy dessert you can make well in advance, offer guests a platter of chocolate truffles or freshbaked cookies. Another fun option: Cut squares of ready-made puff pastry, add your favorite jam, fresh fruit, chocolate or nut spread, then fold the dough, seal with wet fingers and bake on parchment paper at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes. There’s no reason fall entertaining can’t have the same fun and flair as summer soirees. With great food and drink choices, the possibilities are endless.

Home Decor

Do you have a bathroom that’s starting to look a little dated and drab, but perhaps doesn’t need a complete remodel? If you’re craving a change, you can update the space’s style with a few strategic steps. Not only will you elevate the appearance of your bathroom, but you’ll be boosting your home’s value as well. Here are ideas for updating your bathroom space with fashion and function in mind: Flooring replacement The floor in your bathroom gets used and abused, with frequent foot traffic as well as moisture from baths and showers. Replacing the flooring gives the space a noticeable face-lift. Add a heated floor element to give the space upscale appeal. Not into tile? An alternative is luxury vinyl flooring that gives the illusion of wood but with better durability. Vanity upgrades One way to update a vanity is to replace the top portion with granite, quartz, marble or concrete.

This can change the entire look of the vanity and update it with modern style. Consider updating the hardware as well. Mirror and lighting One of the hottest trends in bathroom design right now is lighted mirrors, adding both elegance and function to a bathroom. Shower style Replacing the shower is a massive project, but if you want to update the style with less effort, replace the shower curtain or door. If you have a shower door, it can be difficult to keep the glass clean. A new crystal-clear door from your local home improvement store will add a clean, updated look to the space. If you have a curtain, swap out old material for one in a fresh hue that evokes just the right feel for the space. Linens and rugs Last but not least, to update the style of your bathroom space, don’t forget about fresh linens. New hand towels, bath towels, rugs will update the visual appearance of the room in an instant. Simply swap out new for old and you’ll not only love the look, but there’s something luxurious about wrapping yourself up in a fresh plush towel after a long bath or shower.

Keep Your Packages Safe While online shopping offers up a convenient way to purchase holiday gifts, many consumers are concerned about their delivered packages going missing. Ensuring your online holiday purchases are securely delivered can make your cyber shopping experience even more rewarding and stress free. Here are five tips that will keep your packages safe and your holidays happy.

1. Get deliveries straight to your garage with Key by Amazon Online retailers such as Amazon serve as a popular holiday shopping destination. This season you can get your Prime packages delivered safely and securely right in your garage with Key by Amazon in-garage delivery. Amazon recently launched the new service to provide Prime members the option to select in-garage delivery at checkout.

2. Give specific delivery instructions Most delivery services allow customers to set instructions. Ask your mail carrier to knock or ring the doorbell so that you are immediately alerted when a package arrives at your door. Consider requesting that you mail carrier drop off packages in an out-of-sight spot. Get creative with these drop-off locations and use other delivery points such as back porches or patios. 3. Sign up for delivery alerts Major mail carriers and delivery services have systems for tracking packages. You can use tracking numbers to determine where an item is, and when it should be delivered. Check with your delivery provider to see if you can sign up for alerts via email or text message for when your package is shipped, out for delivery and delivered. 4. Team up with a neighbor Work with a trustworthy neighbor to mutually look after each other’s packages. If a neighbor is home during an anticipated delivery, ask permission to have packages sent to their address or have them hold deliveries that come to your front door. Return the favor whenever possible, and bake a holiday treat or give a small thank-you gift to show your appreciation. 5. Request a signature If you are ordering expensive items online, it is a smart idea to require a signature for delivery. If you are not home at the time of delivery, the mail carrier will typically leave a note with options for rescheduling the delivery for a more convenient time or picking the package up in-person. Holiday shopping is already stressful. Give yourself the gift of peace by trying out some of these package delivery tips, and spend more time enjoying the moments that matter.
