To date, Phoenix Valley market demand continues to be robust and real estate values continue to rise.

From Me To You...

agent at the airport.” Great! So there is more time to add. Heck, I might as well bring a large suitcase if I have to wait (it is included for free on international flights so woo hoo!). Back to the timeline. I am getting in my car at 4am which means I get up at... you guessed it, 3am. With that annoying sound mocking me, “You could have flown in the afternoon!” it seems to say.

For years now, my alarm has been a blaring, cacophony of sound. An angry klaxon, shrieking at me, “Wake up! Wake Up! WAKE UP! The noise would jar me out of sleep and hurtle me into whatever horrible thing I had decided I needed to wake up early for. Flights I couldn’t miss, children who had to go to school, deadlines I had to make. Well this is not a good way to start your day. Ahem, you get the idea. Take it from me, all that does is get me angry and no-one wants to start a trip angry. So I recently I always manage to book a flight that means I had an epiphany. Why not change my alarm have to get up at 3am. Why? I have no idea. to something soothing? My phone has at least Perhaps that is the cheaper flight, or in the frenzy a hundred options to choose from, with many of making sure I don’t miss out on a deal I ‘forget’ more that I can download - just as soon as I that a relaxing 8am flight means I need to be figure out how to do that. My children have had there 3 hours before which puts me at 5am. Still a ton of different alarm clocks through the years. do-able. Oh, right, I live almost an hour from the I remember one that yelled “Get out of bed you airport. So now I need to be in my car, passport lazy child!” in a Simpsons character’s voice, one in hand, bags packed to the limit (but not over) so that you had to throw at a wall, and the latest I can avoid checking in. Why not check in online version is the most torturous of all. You have to you say? Great idea, but I can never check in solve a math problem to switch it off. Now the online. I must have been flagged somewhere problem is something simple like “What is 7x6?” because I always go through the online process However at that time in the morning what I hear in a vague hope that this time it will be different, is, “If a train leaves Newark at 10am and the only to be denied at the final page. “We are cookies need 17 minutes to bake, what color is sorry but you will have to check in with a ticket the cat?” Not good. I resolved to use something that would gently wake me, ready to start the day with a smile on my face. I found a sweet chiming song that starts quietly, gradually getting louder if you don’t turn it off. Fantastic, I am ready for my 3am wake up call. Funny thing though, I find that I can hate anything that wakes me at 3am, even the sweet, dulcet chimes that seem to mock me anyway. I guess I am just not a morning person. But will I remember that the next time I book a flight? Probably not. Catherine Uretsky Editor, Viva magazine catherine@estrellapartners.com 623-594-9283 Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

Workouts You Need You want to live the healthiest life possible and you realize that to do so, you can’t rely on the same old exercise routine. You need to change it up and adjust your plans as you grow older. It may seem daunting, but the good news is that staying fit can be easier than you think.

“Many older adults know their fitness routines have to change as they age because of injuries, chronic aches and pains,” says Julie Logue, SilverSneakers(R) training manager for Tivity Health. “That’s why finding the right health plan during Medicare’s open enrollment period is so important. It’s especially valuable to find a health plan that includes SilverSneakers, which is the nation’s leading fitness program designed exclusively for older adults. It’s much easier to be consistent with exercise when you find a program you love.” Yoga is popular with fitness enthusiasts of all ages, and for older adults, practicing yoga can improve balance, flexibility, mental focus, core strength and breathing efficiency. It can also be a wonderful stress reliever. If you are new to the

6 Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

practice of yoga, or if you feel unsure or unstable during any class, consider using a wall or chair to aid you in your balance for certain poses. Make sure to protect your joints by moving gently into stretches and poses, never forcing your body into any posture. Strength training, sometimes called resistance training, supports bone health and aids in the prevention of osteoporosis, improves your balance and supports a healthy weight. Regular strength training also can make everyday activities easier. Whether it’s dance or another calorie-burning cardio exercise like cycling or walking, getting your body moving is a fun and healthy way to improve your lifestyle. Cardio exercise has also been shown to improve your coordination, agility and reaction time, as well as help you manage your blood pressure and improve cognitive function. Improvements to your regular exercise routine will support you in your goal of living a healthy life, but you can take the next step with the support of a program that includes classes, digital tools and workouts designed with seniors in mind.

Wine Pairings Forget everything you’ve heard about pairing wines with Brie and apples In the man’s own words, here are Dan Dunn’s pairings.

1. With a big, juicy burger After all of those holiday meals, guys really get a hankering for a burger. Think of a great hamburger as you would a classic artist such as Paul Simon. Both are something special on their own, but when paired with the right partner - be it a robust cabernet sauvignon or a spindly, curlyhaired tenor from Queens - well, that’s when the real magic happens. Alas, Simon and Garfunkel called it quits a long time ago, but I’m happy to report that cab and burgers are still making beautiful music together. 2. With pork For smoky roasted pork, a popular dish around the holidays, you can go with a little richer, heavier red - say, cabernet sauvignon - but try the same thing with a honey or maple-glazed ham and you’ve got a mouthful of clash. For sweeter preparations, think mid-bodied reds like a bourbon barrel-aged red blend, aged in charred

Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

bourbon barrels for 6 months, delivering a finish as smoky as it is smooth. 3. With lamb Lamb is most often associated with Easter. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, eh? There promises to be plenty of lamb in the offing over these festive final weeks of the nothing-if-notextraordinarily interesting year that was 2018. No matter how it’s cooked - grilled, braised or roasted - that rich, savory meat demands robust red wine at its side, like a nice zinfandel, with its larger-than-life berry fruit character.

Germs In Your Kitchen Your kitchen may look clean, but here’s the dirt on what’s really happening. Although a quick daily clean might keep some of the bacteria at bay, it’s important to remember that germs are lurking in the dark corners often overlooked! These are three places in the kitchen where germs like to hide, along with things you can do to clean up your act.

been hanging on that loop by the kitchen sink? A week? A month? Can’t remember? According to researchers from the University of Mauritius, towels can develop some nasty bacteria - the kind that causes foodborne illnesses - when they’re used for a full month. To keep things cleaner, get into the habit of grabbing a clean towel every few days.

1. Your refrigerator It’s true, germs can and do hang out inside your refrigerator, especially in the meat and vegetable compartments. In the NSF study, these tested positive for E.coli, salmonella or listeria 36 percent of the time. To keep food safe, discard food that’s past its prime, and maintain a consistent temperature level in the fridge, ideally between 40 and 32 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. You should also get in the habit of regularly cleaning refrigerator door handles and meat and vegetable drawers!

3. Your food prep surfaces Whether you’re making your lunchtime sandwich or chopping veggies for dinner, don’t be deceived by the spotless appearance of your countertops, sinks and cutting boards. The NSF study discovered that fecal coliform has a presence on these surfaces. It’s important to take the extra step to keep bacteria from lingering on these surfaces where they can contaminate your food. Before you gather your ingredients, wash all meal prep areas with hot, soapy water.

2. Your dishwashing station Be honest. How long has that kitchen towel

10 Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

Now that you know what to do to combat hidden bacteria lurking in your kitchen, you can prepare meals and feed your family with much greater peace of mind.

Simply Thankful

As Thanksgiving approaches we take inventory of our lives and what we are grateful for. For most of us it is pretty much the same from year to year. Our family, friends, job, health, home etc., things we take for granted the rest of the year. But what if you had few to none of these things? I have spent the last two years travelling between here and Kenya. I have gone to bed with the threat of waking up to war. I have shared my room with rats, snakes, cockroaches and many other crazy African bugs. And I have learned to not take so many things for granted in my life. Working at a children’s home with 184 kids, I have seen the poorest of poor. I have lived in the bush and at times without running water, electricity and common conveniences. What I have learned is heart wrenching and joyful at the same time. These kids have come from various situations, some survived near death, torture and other atrocities hard to imagine. They are true survivors. The children at the home have next to nothing, but they are happy! They are given a chance at

an education, they eat three good meals a day and have dorms with beds and bathrooms. Bathrooms are a true luxury and not easy to find when travelling around Kenya. Usually it’s a cho, meaning a wood hut with a hole in the ground and you better be carrying tissue with you too. These children also get medical care that very few can afford. Even with these amazing opportunities, they still live in a way that most westerners could not understand. The first thing people here usually say to me is “how awful and sad it must be”, but It’s not. It is obviously not an easy life, but I am humbled to be a part of these kid’s futures and helping make their little piece of the world better. It is not easy but as a group we are making a difference. My experience in living there has taught me to be grateful for not only the big things in life but things that no one here even thinks about. It is always more of a culture shock for me to return to The States then returning to Kenya since life is hard but simple there. I wish everyone could have the experience of living in a third world country. My purpose is still to help bring awareness about Kenyan struggles and especially the wonderful children’s home that has stolen my heart. As this holiday season comes around, be thankful, be grateful but most of all don’t forget to count the ‘little’ things that we have been blessed with. When the pie burns, the turkey is dry, crazy Aunt Mary lets her mouth run off and you missed that Black Friday deal, take a breath and step back. Look around at what is important and let it go. Managing Depresion Sadness and grief are normal human emotions. These feelings can often last for a short period of time. However, when these emotions last for many days or weeks, depression becomes a concern. According to the American Psychiatric Association, depression is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, depression is among the most treatable of mental disorders. Between 80 percent and 90 percent of people with depression eventually respond well to treatment. Almost all patients gain some relief from their symptoms. Symptoms of depression It can be difficult to know when feeling down is turning into something more concerning. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, a major depressive episode may include some of these symptoms: * Persistent sad, anxious or “empty” mood * Feelings of hopelessness * Feelings of guilt, worthlessness or helplessness * Restlessness, irritability

Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

* Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies * Decreased energy * Difficulty concentrating, remembering or

making decisions * Insomnia, early-morning awakening or oversleeping * Low appetite and weight loss, or, overeating and weight gain * Thoughts of death or suicide * Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment (such as headaches, digestive disorders and pain for which no other cause can be diagnosed)

Three steps that can help Step 1: Get screened by a qualified mental health expert. Step 2: Talk to your healthcare provider about a treatment plan. Depression can be managed with the right treatment options. Step 3: Follow a treatment plan closely and take medications as prescribed. Depression doesn’t discriminate. It impacts all races, ages and genders. Keep in mind, if you are ever feeling suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-2738255 immediately.

Yum Yum

The French term amuse bouche refers to dishes that are served according to the chef’s selection alone and often accompanied by a complementing wine. Well at Amuse Bouche in Surprise, the menu is very fluid, as the chef continues to change the featured items based on his own favorites, feedback from his regulars, and what ingredients are in season, while retaining select staple items such as the fabulous French Onion Soup (yes, this is the best we have ever had). Under new management since Feb-2018, Amuse Bouche’s Chef John is often seen in the dining room interacting with guests pairing wines, sharing stories, and generally enjoying the atmosphere. Chef John likes being himself and making food that people with enjoy in a variety of cuisines using nothing but the best ingredients sourced from around the country. What makes Amuse Bouche exciting are the Delicious dishes and the artful presentation which is representative of the chef’s passion for cooking. The décor is a very warm and welcoming with indoor and outdoor seating available. Amuse Bouche offers sophisticated American dishes with a European flair that appeals to all ages. In addition to the many menu items, Amuse Bouche offers weekly featured themed meals

from different nations. Vegetarian and Gluten Free menu items are available and there is a Children’s Menu available upon request. Some of our favorites are the Duck Drumettes in a Sweet Ginger Orange Glaze, Beef Bourguignon, Lobster Mac & Cheese, Chicken Pot Pie, and the Veggie Pastries. Do not leave before asking about the Bread Pudding and Homemade Pies. “We are looking forward to brunch in the near future.. … … hope to see you there., but be sure to make a reservation!” Amuse Bouche offers a full service bar with daily Happy Hour specials and high-end wine selections on weekends. “If you don’t like the wine, we will buy it back and drink it ourselves!” jokes Chef John. Reservations are not required but highly recommended, especially for Sunday brunch, as well as weekend evenings. Be aware the restaurant is closed on Mondays. Catering services are also available. It goes without saying, Amuse Bouche is clearly one of our favorite restaurants in the valley and we are already looking forward to our next visit.
