From Me To You... “Welcome to the new normal!” How many times have you heard that recently? And what does your ‘new normal’ look like? Is it much the same as before Covid came crashing into our lives? Are you back to work and socializing, or are you confined to your home, sheltering in place?

I think most of us are somewhere in the middle of those options. Back to work, absolutely, but perhaps being more mindful of who you see and how you take part in social gatherings. Many of you have taken on the role of substitute teacher. I know that is the biggest change in my daily life. My son is enrolled in an online version of high school which involves watching a very dry, pre-recorded, ancient (I am talking early 1990’s) presentation for each subject and participating in tests and quizzes to show his grasp of the knowledge. The problem is that it just doesn’t work. What teenager do you know that can learn effectively this way? Oh, and to add a cherry on top, there are many times when he has answered a question correctly (for example using the word one instead of the numerical value 1) but it was marked incorrect. Frustration is high in our household on those days. I am sure many of you have similar stories to tell and I sympathize with you.

Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

So to help him as much as I can, I have been auditing his classes. As he watches the Power Point presentation, I take notes and think of ways I would have presented that information. I try to explain the lesson in a way that a teenager will understand and absorb. I can do this in some subjects with ease. History? Love it! Sociology? Not a problem. Physics???? Oh dear lord, physics. I purchased Physics for Dummies to help me and I have come to the conclusion that I am indeed a dummy in physics. Not because of the Physics but because of the Math! I have discovered glaring holes in my Mathematical education, in particular Trigonometry and Algebra. Turns out you need a sound grasp of Trig and Algebra to solve the many, many, many equations in Physics. Who knew? So off I went and purchased Algebra for Dummies. I should probably get Trig for Dummies while I am at it ... Turns out that my ‘new normal’ consists of realizing how many gaps I have in my education and trying to prevent that from becoming my son’s reality too. Good luck to you all, whatever your ‘new normal’ is throwing at you! Catherine Uretsky Editor, Viva magazine catherine@estrellapublishing.com 623-594-9283

Medicare Part B Medicare Part D, which helps cover prescription drug costs, has its own terminology. Medicare Annual Enrollment runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, so now is a good time for a refresher on key words to inform your coverage decisions for 2021.

Deductible, copay and coinsurance A deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket in a given year for eligible prescription drugs before your plan’s coverage kicks in. The deductible can vary from plan to plan. Some plans charge a copay, a flat fee, each time you fill a prescription. For example, a plan may require you to pay $2 when you fill a prescription for generic drugs and a higher amount for brandname drugs. With coinsurance, you pay a set percentage of the cost of the drug instead of the flat fee associated with a copay.

Formulary Part D plans are offered by private insurance companies, and each plan has what’s known as a formulary, a list of the prescription drugs covered under the plan. And keep in mind that plan formularies can change from year to year, so don’t assume that the prescription drugs covered under your current plan will carry over in 2021. Drug tiers A Medicare Part D plan’s formulary is made up of tiers, depending on the cost of the medications. The lower tiers generally include preferred generic drugs, and many plans cover these medicines with low or no copay or coinsurance. Higher tiers generally include brand-name drugs and specialty medications and tend to have higher copays or coinsurance. So, talk to your doctor to see if the brand-name prescription you take can be replaced with a generic version. Preferred pharmacy network A Part D plan may designate a preferred network of pharmacies, and if you use these pharmacies, you can save money on prescriptions. The donut hole The majority of Part D plans have a coverage gap known as a “donut hole.” For example, in 2020, you enter this donut hole once your out-ofpocket costs (including deductibles, copays and coinsurance) for prescription drugs reach $4,020. Once you’re in the donut hole, you will pay 25% of the cost of your drugs. In past years, this percentage was higher. In 2020, once your outof-pocket costs reach $6,350, you exit the donut hole and pay a smaller coinsurance. Your Part D plan tracks your out-of-pocket spend progression and should be accessible on your plan website and monthly statements. same sequence simultaneously.

A wave of new research has demonstrated that implementing practices like meditation can increase mind-body awareness/mindfulness, raise self-esteem, improve concentration, strengthen memory and prevent depression.

•When you chant Sah, touch the index fingers of each hand to the thumbs. •On Tah, touch your middle fingers to your thumbs. •On Nah, touch your ring fingers to your thumbs. •On Mah, touch your little fingers to your thumbs.

Since yoga and meditation techniques can be done at home, it’s something that anyone can do to support their mental wellness. To make Kirtan Kriya meditations part of your mental hygiene routine, follow these steps:

Sing the sounds “Sah, Tah, Nah, Mah” while performing the mudras sequence with the fingers of both hands. At the same time, visualize the sound flowing in through the top of the head and out the middle of the forehead.

Sit comfortably in a chair with feet flat on the floor or sit on the floor with legs crossed. The key is to be comfortable with the spine straight. Keep eyes closed and breathe naturally as the meditation unfolds.

•For one minute, sing the sounds out loud. •For one minute, use a loud whisper. •For the next two minutes, repeat the sounds silently to yourself. •Then whisper the sounds for one minute and then sing out loud for one minute, for a total meditation time of six minutes.

The chant uses the basic sounds, “Sah, Tah, Nah, Mah”, taken from the Sikh words “Sat Nam,” meaning “my true identity.” The thumb is touched to each of the other four fingers in sequence. Both hands perform the

Senior Pets

As members of the family, we love our pets unconditionally. We would do anything to ensure they live long and happy lives with us. That’s why as they age it is important to be aware of the different ways to care for our pets to help them remain healthy and energized as they reach senior status. Purina has answers to these common questions about aging pets to help you be the best pet parent for your furry family member. 1. When are pets considered “senior”? Cats and dogs are generally considered senior when they reach the age of 7 years. No matter what age your pet is, make sure they get regular veterinary checkups and necessary preventive care, like required vaccinations. Watch for signs of aging that could need attention. You may notice changes in their skin and coat, their appetites may diminish, or their activity level may slow down. “Changes in appetite and behavior may indicate underlying health concerns, so it’s worth sharing your observations with your vet,” said Dr. Kurt Venator, DVM, Ph.D. and chief veterinary officer at Purina. “Dogs may also experience hearing, vision or cognitive changes as they age that are hard to detect, so pay attention if your dog responds less promptly to voice commands, bumps into things as they Estrella Publishing - Viva magazine

walk or seems to have trouble doing activities he once enjoyed.” 2. Do pets need special nutrition as they get older? While most people know puppies and kittens have different nutritional needs than adult dogs and cats, few owners realize that senior animals also need food tailored to them. An effective senior pet food formula can help control chronic health conditions, manage a pet’s weight and improve their mental focus. 3. How can you keep an older pet active and alert? Dr. Ragen McGowan, Ph.D., a Purina pet behavior scientist, notes that “just like people, older pets can become set in their ways and naturally slow down as they age. Keeping your senior pet active is a simple, fun and effective way to help them stay healthy and nimble. Remember, that it is just as important to keep your pet’s mind active as it is to keep their body active.” Try out a couple of these activities with your pet: * Play with new toys and games - When was the last time you got your pet a new toy, or played a game of fetch? Puzzle feeders and games can go a long way to keeping your pet mentally active. * Introduce variety to your pet’s life - Vary your walking route by visiting an unfamiliar park or drive to a walking trail to give your dog a new place to discover. Introduce your cat to the outdoors by taking her on a walk on a harness and leash. * Train your pet - Yes, even older pets can learn new tricks. * Spend time with your pet - Petting, talking to and playing with your pets can help keep them happy and alert. Grooming them regularly will also give you a chance to bond as well as look for changes in their skin, toenails, ears and coat that your vet may need to know about. With regular care, proper nutrition and loving attention, aging pets can live a long, enriching life and enjoy every moment they have with you. October 2020

Business 411 When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.”

don’t give cost incentives, they can change the ad message to being expensive but worth it. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides. Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/ or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share. Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.” -----------------------------We at Estrella Publishing are open for business and here working overtime to support our clients and potential future clients with their marketing strategy.

There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown. • The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. It also allows for Call / text 623-594-9283 with any questions advertisers to re-position a brand or introduce a new product. • Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times. • Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, which can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession. • When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current – and possibly future – sales. An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.” An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits. Another strategy used by marketers is changing the ad message and using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. Some advertisers will offer interest-free loans, coupons or special promotions to boost sales and market share. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. Flu Vaccine

Flu causes millions of illnesses, hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations, and tens of thousands of deaths in the United States yearly. This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever to get a flu vaccine to protect yourself, your family and your community from flu and its potentially serious consequences.

Reducing the number of people who are sick with flu also can reduce the burden on our medical systems. More people getting vaccinated can mean that fewer people will need to go to doctors’ offices for flu treatment and testing, and fewer people will need to seek urgent medical care or be hospitalized with flu. These reductions in doctor visits and hospitalizations can help save medical resources needed for the care of COVID-19 patients.

CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older get their flu vaccine in September or October, or as soon as possible after that. While what will happen this fall and winter is uncertain, CDC is preparing for flu and COVID-19 to spread at the same time. Besides making people sick, this could result in a dangerous public health situation because both diseases can cause serious illness that might require hospitalization. Getting a flu vaccine provides the best protection against flu and is particularly important this year. Flu vaccines help reduce the risk of developing potentially serious flu complications. This is especially important for people with certain long-term health conditions like diabetes, asthma and heart disease. Flu vaccines are also important for people who are 65 years or older who are more likely to get very sick from flu.

Non-Stress Beneficiary Deed To Aviod Probate If you want one or two adults to receive your home or real estate upon your death, a Beneficiary Deed can be a non-stress way to avoid probate. A Beneficiary Deed is in essence a “pay on death designation” for real property. A Beneficiary Deed avoids probate without giving up any present ownership interest in the property, like joint tenants with right of survivorship does. The Beneficiary Deed is fully revocable. Where there are co-owners, the surviving owner can revoke the Beneficiary Deed. The owner retains control. The owner does not need to consult the beneficiaries or be concerned about the beneficiaries’ creditors (unlike joint tenants). The Beneficiary Deed is a great tool for people who have all other assets in accounts that have a “pay on death” designation of some type. The Beneficiary Deed is not a good tool if you want to leave your real property to more than two

people, to minors or to adults with special needs receiving government assistance. In those instances, a trust is the best non-stress way to avoid probate Estate planning does not need to be complex or confusing. You deserve to have your questions answered when they arise. Our documents are drafted to provide the benefit of avoiding obstacles and disputes, whether you have multiple beneficiaries or one special heir. Yoga 4 Sleep

These Kundalini Yoga techniques can help if you have recently begun to suffer from poor sleep or you struggle with an ongoing sleep disorder. According to “Yoga Can Help With Insomnia” by Psychology Today, “Researchers at Harvard Medical School investigated how a daily yoga practice might affect sleep for people with insomnia and found broad improvements to measurements of sleep quality and quantity.” First, it’s critical to maintain good sleep hygiene. These are the habits that put you in the best position to have a full night of quality sleep. Signs your sleep could use improvement include taking too long to fall asleep, waking multiple times with difficulty falling back asleep, overall light and restless sleep, and drowsiness during the day. While each person must adopt consistent sleep hygiene practices that work for them, here are some guidelines that you can follow to sleep better. * Avoid bright screens and stimulants like caffeine, alcohol or nicotine close to bedtime. * Exercise during the day so the body is ready

51 Years

to rest later. Be mindful of timing; exercising too late in the day can disrupt sleep. * A light snack is OK, but avoid heavy meals or spicy food before bed. * Drink a glass of water before sleep since dehydration can disturb the sleeping mind. Waking up to use the bathroom is less disruptive to a whole night’s sleep than dehydration. * Practice a restful activity before getting into bed. For example, do gentle yoga and slow breathing exercises, read a book, pray or meditate. * If your nighttime sleep is poor, avoid napping during the daytime. The 3HO Foundation recommends using these Kundalini Yoga techniques to quickly achieve deep sleep in just a few minutes: Step 1: A busy mind has difficulty sleeping. Quiet your thoughts by first visualizing all your worries, ideas and problems, wrapping them up in a package, then placing that package on a shelf in your mind. You’ll be amazed at how many are gone, solved or improved by the time you wake up. Step 2: Lie on your stomach, turn your head so your right cheek is on the pillow. This automatically opens your left nostril to bring in cooling, calming energy. Practice long, deep breathing in this position. Then block your right nostril completely with your hand and continue long, deep breathing through the left nostril. Step 3: Once you feel drowsy, turn to your preferred sleeping position on your back or side. Continue long, deep breathing until asleep. Sleep is always an important component to health and wellness. During stressful times, quality sleep is difficult to achieve. These steps will help you refine your sleep routine and discover better rest. To learn more, visit kundaliniresearchinstitute.org.
