From Me To You...

Time is a funny thing. For many years time seemed to go so slowly. Every day lasted an eternity and there was little to distinguish one day from another. I measured my life in seasons or school and no school. Admittedly I was raising four children under 10 and wrangling my life in a new state, but still... I guess it is true that when you have small children the days are long and the years are short. I look back at that time in my life and remember just getting through the day.

Now it is very different. I spent months planning a trip this year. Coordinating schedules with the friends we were travelling with, finding and booking the best place to stay, organizing the things that needed to be taken care of here while we were gone. Then suddenly we were in the car, driving to our destination. The vacation itself flew by and we were home! Blink. Now I am submerged in my life again, that takes no time at all by the way, and looking ahead to other events.

I celebrated a milestone birthday this month and perhaps that is why I am musing on the subject of time. By all intents and purposes I am now middle aged. Wow, how did that happen? My parents were old when they hit this birthday, heck they were old 10 years before this birthday!

And here I am, feeling the healthiest I think I have ever felt, more secure in myself as a person in my personal life, my marriage and my friendships. And yet. I have this label.

I have not even begun to do everything I am capable of and want to do. I just have to get to retirement so I have the time to do some of those things! And there it is again. Rushing towards something to be able to do the thing I think I can’t do yet. I need to slow down and be in the moment.

That is a phrase we are hearing a lot recently. It is apt though. We all could do with stopping and appreciating the now. Look around at your life and see what you have achieved already. What is good in your day? Whether it is as big as buying a new house or as small as checking off an item on your to-do list. Savor it. Enjoy the victories and don’t let time drag you along in its wake.

Retiring at 65?

Planning to retire on your 65th birthday?

We didn’t think so. The traditional notion of retirement - a switch from full-time work to fulltime leisure - is becoming a thing of the past for millions of Americans. Delaying retirement or returning to work may influence your Medicare decisions. Here are some points to keep in mind if you plan to continue working past your 65th birthday or return to work.

Why enroll in Medicare at 65?

If you’re about to turn 65, you have a sevenmonth window called an Initial Enrollment Period (IEP). That includes the month of your birthday, the three months before and the three months after. If you don’t have health insurance through your employer, your IEP is the time to figure out which Medicare coverage would work best for you. If you have coverage through your employer and plan to keep working, check with your HR department or benefits administrator to see how Medicare might work with your employer coverage.

How Social Security benefits can affect your Medicare enrollment If you already receive Social Security benefits when you turn 65, you’ll be automatically enrolled in Original Medicare (Parts A and B), and your Medicare card will arrive before your 65th birthday. Your Part B premium will be automatically deducted from your Social Security

payments. If you don’t want Medicare Part B, notify Medicare to opt out. Many wait to claim Social Security until their 66th birthday or later to increase their monthly payments. If you fall into this group but still want Medicare coverage when you turn 65, it’s up to you to enroll because it won’t happen automatically.

Penalties for delaying Medicare enrollment If you’re planning to work beyond 65, you may be able to wait until you retire to enroll in Medicare. If your employer plan doesn’t offer prescription drug coverage, or if the coverage isn’t as good as Medicare, consider enrolling in a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.

That’s because Medicare imposes a permanent late enrollment penalty that will increase your monthly premium if you later decide to sign up for a Part D plan. You must be enrolled in Part A and/or Part B of Medicare before you can enroll in Part D. When you retire or lose your employer coverage, you’ll be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). You can enroll in Parts A and/or B for up to eight months after the month you retire or your employer health plan coverage ends, whichever comes first. But if you delay beyond eight months, you could pay more for your Part B premium - for as long as you have Part B. For each year you delay enrollment in Part B, an extra 10% is added to your premium.

Bottom line Just because you delay your retirement doesn’t mean you should delay your Medicare enrollment. Talk to your HR or benefits coordinator at work to get personalized advice based on your needs.

Fire Safety

This simple fire safety checklist can help ensure your home and family are protected from the threats of smoke, fire and carbon monoxide.

1) Install smoke alarms on every level and in every bedroom. Three out of every five home fire deaths result from fires in homes without smoke alarms or with no working smoke alarms. For maximum protection, install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement.

2) Testing and maintaining alarms is key. Alarms should be tested regularly and replaced at least every 10 years. Help ensure your alarms remain in good, working order by changing the batteries at least every six months. Many cities and states require sealed 10-year battery alarms, so check with your local fire department if you do not know what to install.

3) Equip your home with fire extinguishers.

Beyond alarms, having fire extinguishers - and knowing how to use them - is an important part of maintaining a safe home for you and your family. Every 24 seconds, a fire department responds to a fire, according to the NFPA, so being prepared to fight small fires is critical.

Place extinguishers in convenient locations on every level of the home, in the kitchen and in the

garage.

4) Protect against the “silent killer.” An odorless and invisible gas, CO is the number one cause of accidental poisoning and can only be detected with an alarm - yet only 47% of homeowners report owning a CO alarm. Just like smoke alarms, be sure to check all CO alarms regularly using the “test” button for continued protection.

5) Plan. Practice. Repeat. Make sure to involve everyone in your household in creating a plan and practice it at least twice every year. As part of this plan, equip second-floor bedrooms with escape ladders and discuss how to use them. Identify two ways out of each room and a meeting place outside. Emphasize that once at the predesignated meeting area, call 911 and wait until officials clear your home to re-enter it safely.

Medicare Enrollment Medicare Open Enrollment is about to kick off.

For most people already enrolled in Medicare, the annual Open Enrollment period (Oct. 15 through Dec. 7) is the only opportunity to make changes to your existing Medicare coverage.

During Medicare Open Enrollment, Medicare beneficiaries can switch Part D prescription drug plans; switch Medicare Advantage plans; switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage; or switch from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare.

Dan Klein, president and CEO of the Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation, offers the following tips for navigating Medicare Open Enrollment.

1. Do your homework Changes to your health status, doctors or other healthcare providers, prescription drugs or budget may mean that your current plan is no longer the most cost-effective choice for you.

2. Make sure your doctors and providers are in-network If you visit a doctor, hospital or pharmacy that is outside of the network, you will likely have to pay more.

3. Make sure your medications are covered It’s important to ensure that your plan covers the medications you need and that the plan’s network of pharmacies makes it convenient for you to access your drugs.

There may be assistance available to you if you cannot afford the out-of-pocket costs for your prescription medications. You should research your options now.

You may qualify for a federal Medicare Low Income Subsidy to help pay for your prescription drug costs. You may also be eligible for a patient assistance program that provides people with financial assistance to cover out-of-pocket costs for their medical treatments. Life Insurance When a loved one dies unexpectedly, the last thing families should have to think about is how they’re going to pay the bills or whether they can stay in the house. But the reality is that, according to research from LIMRA1, 35% of households would feel the financial impact of losing a primary wage earner within 30 days.

So why don’t more people have it? Scaturro lists general misunderstanding about the product and competing financial priorities as the two most common reasons that people don’t have coverage.

“Consumers generally overestimate the cost of life insurance by three times, according to LIMRA,” says Sean Scaturro, Director of Insurance Advice and a Certified Financial Planner for USAA.

Here are the biggest questions around life insurance: Who needs life insurance?

The short answer, according to Scaturro, is nearly everyone. “If someone would be negatively impacted financially by your passing, you need life insurance,” he says. “So, whether you’re single, married, kids or no kids, you likely need life insurance.”

What type is best?

There are two general types of life insurance term and permanent. Term lasts for a set period - 10, 20, 30 years - and provides coverage if you pass away during that term. It may also be the most affordable type of life insurance. Permanent life insurance lasts your entire life, if premiums are paid. It’s a more expensive option, but has added benefits, such as gaining cash value, that could make it a positive addition to a retirement plan.

How much coverage should you have?

A quick and easy way to estimate your overall life insurance needs is using the acronym L.I.F.E. (Liabilities & debts, Income to replace, Final Expenses, Education or Extra Goals to be paid for). Then subtract any existing policies, such as coverage provided by an employer, along with any savings, to determine your life insurance gap. Many online calculators exist, including one offered by USAA at usaa.com/lifeadvice.

If you have a free or low-cost option for coverage through your employer, take it, says Scaturro. But that shouldn’t be your only coverage.

The most important thing is to make sure your family is taken care of if something happened to you. Today is the day to make life insurance part of your financial picture and know that your loved ones are protected.

Energy Hogs

There’s nothing quite as comforting as pulling on your favorite hoodie when it’s fresh from the dryer. As much as you love luxuriating in that warmth and softness, you may not be aware just how much energy this beloved appliance burns through in a year. When it comes to energy savings in the laundry room, the dryer has long been an obstacle, and here’s why. * Unlike washing machines, refrigerators and other common household appliances, energyefficient dryer models have been absent from the market. It wasn’t until 2014 when the first ENERGY STAR Certified dryers became available. * Before then, dryer technology had stayed pretty much the same for decades. A standard dryer blows heated air into the drum chamber, removing moisture from the clothing. Then the hot, moist air is vented out of the machine (and out of the house). Because of that constant loss of heat, the machine works continuously to resupply the drum with hot air. * According to the EPA, the standard clothes dryer uses more energy than any appliance in a typical household, including the clothes washer and dishwasher.

Diamonds

Diamonds are extolled in movies and songs for good reason - their romance, allure and durability make them a symbol of love and fidelity. Diamonds are in demand from purists and romantics alike who want to indulge in the most coveted of gemstones. But did you know that there are many alternatives to mined diamonds? The following information on five gemstones comes from Jewelry Television (JTV).

Protect Your Pet

Face it, everyone loves their pets. And they often want to take their pets wherever they’re going.

In fact, a recent survey by Volvo Car USA and The Harris Poll found that 39% of pet owners would rather go on a road trip with their dog than a family member. Seventy-seven percent of respondents said that people don’t take vehicular pet safety seriously. Furthermore, nearly a third of dog owners reported leaving their furry friend home due to concerns about road safety.

These concerns aren’t unwarranted. The survey also examined driver behavior when pets were unrestrained in a vehicle and discovered eyeopening results.

What can you do to keep your pet safer while driving? Dr. Elisa Mazzaferro, a veterinary specialist at Cornell University, shares some common but unsafe practices that pet owners should avoid.

1. Don’t drive with your pet in the front seat In the event of a collision, your pet can be thrown into the windshield, even if restrained.

Unless the passenger side airbag is disengaged, airbag deployment alone can be very dangerous to a small pet.

2. Never drive with a pet on your lap In addition to distracting the driver, a pet can get caught under the steering wheel and cause an accident or projected forward into the windshield in the event of a collision. Additionally, the pet is positioned between the airbag and the driver, which is dangerous to both the driver and the pet.

3. Never drive with an unrestrained pet in the vehicle Beyond the animal being a serious distraction, an abrupt stop can cause a pet to fall quickly, causing soft tissue injury or worse. In the event of an accident, a pet could jump from the vehicle and run into moving traffic.

4. Never allow your pet to lean out of a car window While it may look like dogs are enjoying the rush of the wind in their fur, debris can be forced into their eyes and cause abrasions or punctures to their cornea, which could result in serious injury or blindness.
