From Me To You...

Back to School! Those three words struck terror in my heart as a child, new people, new schedules, new places, new opportunities to embarrass myself with the amount of things I didn’t know. Would my new back-to-school outfits be cool or not? Would I get the teacher everyone loved, or be stuck with the ones everyone dreaded? The list was endless.

As a parent I felt slightly differently about back to school time. Entertaining 4 small people of varying ages for several months in the blistering heat of summer vacation went rapidly from an adventure full of opportunities to becoming a burden of keeping them busy and trying to stop the endless bickering. I must say that despite my resolutions at the beginning or each summer I did use television and later the internet in heavy doses - always in a educational way, of course ;) Now I am getting a degree and back-to-school applies to me. It is very different approaching education as an adult who has chosen to reapply myself to academia. I am soon to begin my second year as a Mature Student and this time

I have a confidence in my abilities as well as an interest in what I will be learning. Finding notebooks and pens is fun when I am doing it for myself.

Ordering text books and choosing my subjects holds an appeal that I don’t remember from my youth. I studied Shakespeare in high school and we all dreaded it. The groans as we tried to understand the language would reverberate around the classroom. Now I see Twelfth Night on the curriculum and I am excited for the challenge. Perhaps that has something to do with my ability to get help via the internet now but either way it is going to be interesting.

Having a full year under my belt I have the confidence that I can do this, and I realized that I enjoy learning. Interacting with others taking the same path and making new friends is all part of this journey and I am looking forward to going back to school!

I’m a soup girl, usually ordering it when I’m dining out if it’s on the menu, and I make it at home since it’s often a great way to use up leftovers in the fridge with a few pantry additions. This version of corn chowder is a crowd favorite ~ layering of flavors and textures ~ the sweet crispness of corn kernels, the creamy smoothness of the pureed potatoes and coconut milk, and the spicy kick of Madras curry powder.

Summer Curried Corn Chowder 1 large yellow onion, diced 2 garlic cloves, minced Pinch of dried thyme OR ¼ tsp fresh thyme leaves 2 T unsalted butter 3-1/2 C frozen corn OR 4 ears fresh, shucked with kernels cut off cob 4 C chicken bone broth or vegetable stock 2 large gold potatoes, peeled & diced

1 tsp sugar 2 T unsalted butter, melted 1 T Madras curry powder (or mild curry if you like it less spicy) ¼ - ½ C canned coconut milk 1 T chopped fresh cilantro Salt & pepper to taste Saute onion, garlic, and thyme in butter over medium heat in a large stock pot until onion begins to soften. Add the corn, stock, potatoes, and sugar and bring to boil. Lower heat and simmer for 25-30 minutes. In separate pan, melt 2 T butter and add curry powder; cook 3-5 minutes until fragrant.

Remove soup from heat to puree in food processor. Scoop half of the soup into the bowl of the processor and blend until smooth. Return to soup pot.

Stir in curry butter, coconut milk, cilantro, salt & pepper; cook for an additional 15 minutes so that flavors can blend. Best eaten the day it’s made! And always have some crusty bread nearby whenever you serve soup!!

Fall Sports Kick Off in Estrella Mountain Ranch The weather is about to simmer down and the kids are back to school. Soon, we’ll hear referee whistles and fans cheering as fall sports kick off “up the hill.”

MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS Estrella is home to two K-8 elementary schools; Estrella Mountain Elementary and Westar Elementary. They make up two of the seven signature schools in the historic Liberty Elementary School District.

This fall, the district offers girls volleyball and boys soccer for grades 6-8. Student athletes travel between all 7 schools in the district to compete for the championship title in November.

School Pride

No matter how poor your former state is, it provides more funding per public school pupil than Arizona. 50 years ago, my first “real” job was in Minnesota, with Albert Lea Area Schools. Minnesota, is only slightly above the US average in its funding of public schools. It pays $15,932 per public school pupil – 62% more than Arizona’s $9,814 average per pupil. Albert Lea Area Schools happens to have the same student population (give or take 3 students) as our Liberty Elementary District. Albert Lea Area Schools gets $14,919 per pupil – 77% more than Liberty Elementary District’s $6483 per pupil.

I left teaching, but continued to believe in public schools. I’ve been a Site Council member at Estrella Mountain Elementary since about 2007.

Between 2008 and 2018 the state cut 20% of funding to all public schools, including ours. The decline in state support can also be measured by the ratio of public education funding dollars to

our state’s gross domestic product: In 2008 it was 3.2%. By 2018, it was down to 2.2%.

Arizona provides very minimal state funding to public schools. Districts must rely on local funding – overrides – for key programs like all-day kindergarten, music, art, PE, after school sports, reduced class sizes and financial incentives to help attract and retain teachers.

The Liberty Elementary SD override, in place since 1983, failed last November. One-third of the money for the override programs is gone and ALL funding disappears next year if voters don’t restore the override this November. The average district in Arizona gets 16.3% more money per pupil than Liberty Elementary SD. Without override funding for the afore-mentioned programs, what would the district’s choices be?

Charge tuition for all-day kindergarten? Increase after-school sports fees? Lay off all music, art & PE teachers? Increase class sizes? Lose teachers to districts with higher pay?

Arizona public school students are already getting short-changed by the state. We need to step up locally to approve the Liberty Elementary SD override in November.

Clean Machine Face it - as much as you enjoy having a clean home, limited time and energy can make cleaning seem like a never-ending chore.

However, there are some tips and tricks that can help you optimize your time for better results, so you can get back to doing what you love.

1. Schedule it Just as you schedule important appointments on your calendar, make sure to block off time for at least one regular cleaning session each week.

Set aside time for a full-home run-through to pick up clutter, dust and vacuum. Allow extra time on high-traffic rooms where cleanliness is especially important, like the kitchen and bathrooms.

2. Delegate it You don’t have to do it all. Get everyone in the household involved in your cleaning efforts.

Make sure to be specific and clear about what each person’s obligation is, and that they schedule time on their calendars too. Family members will be more consistent if you give them choices about their chores and/or rotate them so nobody is stuck doing the hardest chores all the time.

3. Start at the top Work from the top down, as dust you sweep away from cleaning ceiling fans, windows and other surfaces will settle on the floor during the process. Tackling your floors last will be satisfying as well as highly effective for a feeling of overall cleanliness.

4. Consider tech-forward cleaning tools To make cleaning easier and less time consuming make sure you’re using the best tools possible for each job you need to tackle, and every chore will be that much easier.

5. Troubleshoot the trouble spots As you implement your cleaning process, take note of areas that always get dirtiest or accumulate the most clutter. Typical areas might be “dumping spots” such as near your front entrance or by a staircase. If there’s no place for family members to neatly store shoes, backpacks, purses or items that need to go up or downstairs, consider providing a box, bin, shelf or hooks to hold things that would just end up cluttering that area.

With these tips, you can put an efficient process in place to accomplish your cleaning chores more quickly and easily - and have time to enjoy the results of your efforts.
