From Me To You...

Back to school! It is hard to believe I am saying those words. For so long our children and grandchildren have been stuck at home and life has been on pause. But now life can resume — as if nothing happened. I already see message boards full of posts from parents scrambling to find specific school supplies, asking which school or class local children are going to attend, and over all of this is the palpable sense of relief that we can finally get back to normal.

think the Japanese culture of mask wearing when anyone is sick has great merit, and going forwards I am encouraging my family to do the same. I don’t know about you, but we amassed quite the mask collection during the pandemic. It took a while to find the right size, shape, and coverage for everyone, resulting in a basket full of left overs.

I suppose I could fashion them into a small quilt or tea cozy but tucking them into backpacks seems much easier. That way if the kids end up in a situation where a classmate is coughing and spluttering, they can whip out a mask and protect themselves.

I don’t know about you but when I started to venture out into the world again I was tentative to say the least. Like a creature emerging from hibernation, I was not sure what the world would look like after so long. It is one thing to have a layer of protection (i.e. a mask) between me and those germs, but walking around without a mask took some getting used to.

Going back to that quilting idea. I bet there is an enterprising group of quilters out there who could make a covid quilt from all our masks. It could be placed in a museum so people could see it in the future and marvel at what we have overcome. I will not be one of those people — I still haven’t finished my crocheted blanket I started at the beginning of the pandemic!

It wasn’t just the protection I missed. Having a cloth over half of my face has had several advantages. You see, the mask not only gave me protection, it also covered half of my wrinkles and half of any blemishes. Add a pair of sunglasses and I barely showed my face to the world at all! Ever run out of the house after chugging a cup of coffee? No need to be concerned about breathing noxious fumes over everyone when you wear a mask! It also reduced the amount of halitosis I was exposed to. That was quite a bonus.

Vanity aside, the best side effect of wearing masks for my family was the reduction of colds and flu that we experienced last year. Every year we suffer through various viral bugs, and due to health issues, a cold in my children becomes pneumonia for me. I am sure some of that freedom form illness was due to the quarantine, but once the kids went back to school I had braced myself for the expected germ swap.

And... nothing! No colds, no flu, no random virus swept our house and it was glorious. I 4 Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

Money Matters Like most people, you may have several financial goals. But can you reach them all? It would be simple if you had great wealth. But you’ll likely need to rank your goals in terms of their importance to your life and then follow appropriate strategies to achieve them. When prioritizing your goals, consider following this process: • Identify goals as “must have” or “nice to have.” Making sure you don’t outlive your resources is a must-have goal, so you need to be as certain as possible of achieving it. On the other hand, a nice-to-have goal might be something like buying a vacation home. If you don’t attain the money needed for this goal, you do have room to compromise, perhaps by scaling down to a smaller home in a different area or just renting a place for a few weeks a

year. Having this flexibility can provide a psychological benefit, too. Since this goal doesn’t have an either-or outcome, you won’t have to feel that you failed if you don’t get the big vacation home – instead, you can still enjoy the results of your investment efforts, even at a more modest scale.

• Put “price tags” on your goals. You need to know what your goals will cost. To arrive at these price tags, you may want to work with a financial professional who has the tools and technology to create hypothetical illustrations and scenarios.

• Follow an appropriate strategy. The nature of your goals and their estimated cost will drive your investment strategy. So, for example, using the must-have goal mentioned above – the need to avoid outliving your money – you’ll want to balance your growth objectives with your comfort with risk, as well as maintain an appropriate withdrawal strategy when you’re retired. However, for a nice-to-have goal, such as your large vacation home, perhaps you don’t need the same urgency – consequently, with part of your portfolio, you might be able to take more risk in hopes of greater returns. And if you fall short, you can always go with Plan B – i.e., the smaller home or the rental experience.

• Monitor your results. As you pursue your goals, whether must have or nice to have, you’ll want to check your results regularly. If you think you’re not making enough progress toward your desired goal, you may need to make adjustments. But don’t overreact to short-term swings in the financial markets or in the value of your portfolio, or take on an inappropriate amount of risk. When trying to reach your goals, you can alter your path, but it’s usually not a good idea to change directions altogether.

The decisions involved in identifying, prioritizing and achieving your goals can be somewhat involved. But by following a well-designed process, you can help yourself get to where you want to go.

The Bug Guy

When thinking about pest control, too often we conjure images of someone running around with toxic chemicals spraying haphazardly and putting human health at risk. A pest management professional uses Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to control pests, not simply relying on the application of pesticide. IPM relies heavily on the inspection process to develop a control strategy.

A pest management professional is trained to understand pest biology and to think like a pest.

What does it like? Where will you find it and why is it there? What can be done to make it go away?

IPM control strategies can include blocking a pest’s entrance into a building, removing or reducing favorable conditions for the pest, or physically removing the pest with traps or a vacuum. When a control product (pesticide) is applied, it is used in a manner where it will contact the pest and have limited contact with people or pets based on label guidelines.

Control products are necessary tools for the pest control professional, but they can have a bad rep in the eyes of the public. This is due to

misinformation and a lack of understanding of the products available. No longer are the days of DDT or chlordane being applied inside and out of every American home. Now, treatments are targeted to where the pest will be present and its hiding spots (generally cracks & crevices).

Thanks to advancements in technology, many of today’s control products are less hazardous when used per label instructions than those previously on the market. Some are even less hazardous than commonly used household products. Most homeowners never think to wear eye protection and gloves when wielding a gallon of bleach in the laundry room, despite its corrosive properties and danger label.

The mission of the pest control industry is to protect people and their investments. Termites can destroy a building. Rodents can contaminate food, spread disease and cause property damage. Roaches can produce allergens that trigger asthma. Mosquitoes, fleas and ticks can spread blood-borne pathogens. Bed bugs can cause physical and emotional harm. Professional pest control has an important role to play and can be safely integrated into areas where we live, work and play.

Home Sweet Home Home Organization Projects in 1 Hour or Less

In a perfect world, you’d be able to carve out hours (or days) to get your home perfectly organized. But we don’t live in a perfect world, and most people don’t have that kind of time. But some good news is… You don’t need a crazy amount of free time to organize your home; there’s plenty you can do in just an hour—or even less.

A recent article from realtor.com outlined the most effective home organization projects based on time available. So, what are some of the best organization projects to tackle when you’re tight on time?

If you have 5 minutes, do a quick declutter. If you only have a few minutes to organize, look for an area that’s visibly cluttered—like a kitchen countertop or coffee table—and spend that time putting unnecessary items away and clearing the space.

If you have 15 minutes, clean out your junk drawer. Just because your junk drawer is full of miscellaneous items doesn’t mean it has to be disorganized! If you have 15 minutes, empty out your junk drawer and use small plastic drawer inserts to organize and separate items by type or category.

If you have 1 hour, get your children’s toys in order. If you have kids, chances are, there are toys everywhere. Next time you have an hour, clean up all the toys that are out and about in your home. Then, pack away all but 10 toys. 10 toys is a manageable number and won’t overwhelm your space with clutter—and when your kids are ready to play with something new, just rotate in 10 new toys from their collection.

Bottom line…You don’t need a ton of time to get your house organized. By tackling smaller projects one by one, you can get your home in order—one hour (or a few minutes) at a time.

Fresh grapes are a cooling ingredient that can refresh and elevate summertime meals with a burst of color, flavor and pleasing texture. For a fabulous finish, go all in with a refreshing Grape Tart with Lemon Cream for dessert. Using a store-bought, prebaked tart shell or graham cracker crust makes this an easy, no-bake confection.

Fresh Grape Tart with Lemon Cream Prep time: 15 minutes plus chilling Yield: Makes 10 servings Ingredients 1 prebaked tart shell or graham cracker crust 4 ounces reduced-fat cream cheese (Neufchatel) 1/4 cup low-fat sour cream

2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice About 3 cups grapes, halved Directions In a medium bowl, whisk together the cream cheese, sour cream and 2 tablespoons sugar.

Whisk in the lemon juice. Spread the cream cheese mixture over the tart base, leaving a 1/2inch border. Arrange the grapes in concentric circles over the cream cheese mixture. Chill until ready to serve.

Teenage Dreams As the sunny days, late nights, and way too many iced coffees of summer come to an end and the school year begins, I can say I’m going to miss it.

This summer was great, and I had so much fun!

My days were filled with reality tv, shopping trips, ice cream and long car drives with my sisters and friends. However, I was also lucky enough to go on 2 vacations this summer.

The first was to southern California for 2 weeks which was fantastic. I have always loved the San Diego area, the people, the food, the air, everything seems happier. One of my favorite places to go is Bird Rock in La Jolla. At this beach, you can find sea lions soaking up the sun and swimming in the waves which is amazing to witness up close! If you ever find yourself in the area, I recommend eating at Breakfast Republic for brunch, and Rockin’ Baja Lobster for dinner, both places are on my all-time favorite restaurants list. My sisters and I took lots of pictures, collected many seashells and got crispy sunburns.

The second vacation I went on was to New Orleans, LA and Pensacola, FL. New Orleans was a vibrant and eclectic city with beautiful architecture and a unique culture.

The city overall gave a feeling similar to being in New York, lots of hustle and bustle and grand buildings. And because I had watched Princess and the Frog countless times, we had decided that if we went to New Orleans, we must have beignets. So good! We compared two popular places Cafe Beignet and Cafe du Monde, and our family came to the conclusion that Cafe Beignet won. Then we drove to Pensacola and stayed in a house right on the beach! Every morning I sat on the sand, drank coffee and watched the waves. We didso many things: mini golf, glow in the dark kayaking, card games and lots of swimming.

Now I’m filled with butterflies for starting school.

On the one hand I’m excited for the potential of great friendships and new opportunities that the year at this school will bring - especially the games and dances. On the other hand, I am nervous about going to school in person and being a completely new student. Wish me luck!

Vaccinations

As families prepare to send their kids back to in-person classes, there might be one essential item parents still need to add to the back-toschool list – immunizations. Staying up to date on immunizations helps keep communities safe from an outbreak of a life-threatening disease.

Unfortunately, millions of people fell behind their vaccination schedule during the last year, as they could not physically visit the doctor or put off well-checks during the worst of the pandemic.

While telehealth appointments are extremely valuable, it is still important to make time to see your doctor in person to make sure you and your family are up to date on these vaccinations.

Do you know the last time you or your children received their booster tetanus shot? Or if you and your loved ones are still protected against hepatitis? It is important to keep up to date with these vaccines to receive the best protection against deadly viruses.

If you are still unsure why vaccinations are so necessary, consider the 1.5 million people who

die from vaccine-preventable diseases every year. According to the World Health Organization, around 86% of children around the world are vaccinated. These vaccinated people prevent anywhere from two to three million people from dying each year.

If 90-95% of children were immunized against preventable diseases - millions of lives could be saved.

Keeping up to date with your and your family’s vaccinations helps the population as a whole maintain herd immunity – a phenomenon that the world is attempting to reach to be protected against COVID-19. With teachers and kids heading back to the classrooms this fall, it has never been more important to take stock of your health and receive proper care.

After more than a year of physically distant learning, teachers are cautiously excited to return to the classroom. Yet parents remain anxious about what to expect in the new school year. Among the many challenges the pandemic brought onto families with school-age children, coming home with exposure to a potentially life-threatening disease should be the least of your worries this upcoming year. Do your part by checking in with your doctor to confirm you and your family are protected.

If you are unsure of your vaccine history, you can request a copy of your immunization records from your primary care doctor. Upon pulling up your records, they may have you schedule an appointment for a vaccine or booster shot. If you do not have a primary care physician or are unsure of your previous health history, there are many healthcare resources like Jewish Family & Children’s Service that are open and ready to connect you to the right kind of care.

Long Covid

The COVID-19 pandemic has had more impact on the world than could have been imagined.

One unexpected impact is the long-term symptoms some people experience for weeks or months after recovering from the disease, a syndrome called long COVID. Researchers estimate 10% to 30% of people who contract COVID-19 develop long COVID after recovering from the disease, with more women reporting lasting symptoms.

Those suffering from long COVID experience ongoing combinations of symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, body aches, coughing, joint pain, chest pain, intermittent fever, difficulty concentrating, headaches and even continued loss of taste and smell. Others also report the mental impacts of prolonged symptoms, which include depression, anxiety, changes to their mood and sleep, and a mental “brain fog” that won’t lift. In all, people suffering with long COVID can have up to 200 symptoms.

Dr. Archelle Georgiou, an author and expert in consumer healthcare, said that minimizing symptoms and the people who are experiencing long COVID is another unfortunate stage in this pandemic. Understanding that long COVID is a real syndrome, should be treated by experts, and is not imagined may be a relief for some who are suffering with the ongoing effects of the virus.

While the number of infected people who will develop long-lasting symptoms is unclear, what is true is those with long COVID can be old, young, healthy or those with chronic conditions.

Although many experiencing prolonged symptoms of COVID-19 do not require hospitalization, the ongoing symptoms still have a major impact on their daily lives, livelihood and, of course, health. A recent COVID Symptom Study of more than 3,700 people with long COVID in 56 countries found that more than half 20 Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

were not able to work full time because of their ongoing symptoms. With symptoms varying from day to day, individuals can feel isolated - alone on an unpredictable journey.

The pandemic has revealed how truly important connecting and seeking social support from your family and friends is as you go through challenging times. Suffering from ongoing symptoms of COVID-19, like any other health journey, can be difficult to endure alone.

There are many resources to read online, however having support from others and a sense of community are also very important.

Connecting with other long COVID patients in a virtual community is an important way to stay abreast of new health information and a

way to get emotional support as you navigate your health journey. Finding social support and connection is important considering those who are experiencing long COVID or long-lasting symptoms are reporting a rise in sense of isolation, according to a 2020 study.

“Research has shown listening to other people’s stories can improve both mental and physical health. Sharing your story is empowering and liberating and helps not only yourself but others through creating empathic connections and supportive audiences,” said Georgiou.

In the presence of the unknown of long COVID, love and support can be a lifeline. The power of meaningful connections is real, and the support of a community is crucial as long COVID patients continue through their health journey.

Backpack essentials for road trips and outdoor adventures After over a year of staying home, people are eager to start exploring places both near and far again. Mother Nature offers ample opportunity for adventure, with outdoor recreation activities to suit every personality. Whether you’re planning a road trip across the country or opting for a local day trip, you can ensure you’re ready for a memorable experience outside by packing wisely.

Be proactive about sun protection Few things are better than the smell of fresh air and the warm feeling of the sun on your skin. However, too much sun can cause sunburn, heat exhaustion or worse.

No matter the outdoor activity, it’s

important to take proper sun protection steps.

Start by dressing in light layers, which can not only help you stay comfortable as temperatures change throughout the day, but also serve as protection from the sun. Clothing made from cotton is a good option because it is lightweight and breathable. A hat that protects the eyes and face is a must-have, as well as UV-blocking sunglasses.

Of course, make sure to add sunscreen to your travel bag and reapply regularly throughout the day. The American Cancer Society recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 and reapplying it every two hours, or more frequently when swimming or sweating.

Stay fueled and hydrated From the beach to the mountains and beyond, having wholesome snacks and drinks on hand helps maintain energy levels so you can fully enjoy any outdoor activity. Pack a reusable water bottle and make sure you have enough to stay hydrated in the summer sun. As for snacks, the best backpack options are easily portable, don’t require refrigeration and are full of protein and nutrients to keep you satisfied for long periods of time.

Get the gear Comfort is key to enjoying the great outdoors. If your exploration will get you up close to Mother Nature, pack clothing and accessories that are easy to wash if they get dirty. You’ll also need the right apparel, like proper footwear for all day play. Feet may get wet or sweaty, so consider socks made with moisture-wicking wool to avoid blisters.

Finally, the flora and fauna are some of the best parts of exploring the world around you, but keep in mind that includes bugs. Avoid wearing strong perfumes or heavily scented deodorants that may attract insects on adventure day and bring your preferred bug repellent in your bag to ward off bites.
