From Me To You... Having many choices in life seems like a wonderful thing, but are you like me in that if I have too many choices I am paralyzed by indecision? I always say that if I can choose between three things then I am happy. Any more than that and I just can’t seem to decide. And if my decision affects others, which it most often does, then I am struck even more by the weight of my picks.

Take vacations. I love to plan them and dream about the destination and the cute boutique hotel or AirBNB that I will be resting in at the end of a day well spent. I can spend hours, or even days scouring travel sites and reading recommendations looking for that perfect holiday - and mostly enjoy it. Once it gets to making an actual decision I come to a screeching halt. I love this hotel but will my son be OK with sharing a room with his parents again? Or perhaps this house rental would be a better option, again someone will be sleeping on a couch, but it’s just for a few nights... I usually manage to narrow it down to a few options then the reviews throw me off - there are always good and bad ones. This house has the best ambience! But it is also in a shady neighborhood and we shouldn’t go out at night. This hotel has the largest rooms (very important when traveling with children)! But it doesn’t have a restaurant/pool on site (also very important when travelling with children). This one is perfect! But it is way out of budget. Sigh.

to see and do everything, that I almost ruined it for everyone. After 2 days of force-marching the family around the first two parks on a tight schedule, it occurred to me that there was no earthly way ‘to see and do everything’. So I took a deep breath and decided that being in the happiest place on earth meant that we should at least try to be happy ourselves. I gave up control and let the kids guide our days from then on. Did we do the Muppet 4D ride more times in a row than I care to remember? Yes. Did we blow our fast passes on It’s A Small World? Yes we did. Did the kids have the best time? I like to think so. The complaints certainly stopped, so I take that as a win. Our next vacation (the first since Covid) is coming up and I think I have everything set. As long as those darned hurricanes don’t decide to visit the same town as us, we should have a wonderful time. Even I know I can’t choose the weather!

Once accommodation is set then I move on to planning our time. What will we be doing? Everything! Seriously. On our first trip to Disney World, many years ago, I was so wound up with the idea that a vacation that cost the same as a car should give you only the best memories, and that we had 4 Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

On Our Cover As the day begins to fade and the golden glow of the sunset emerges, people start to gather along the waterfront to enjoy the sunset’s beauty. If you have ever been to Key West, this nightly tradition will remind you of the sunset celebration in Mallory Square. While it’s not the carnival atmosphere of Key West, EMR lakes are busy with resident activity around this time.

Strolling around the lake to capture sunset photographs, I have seen EMR residents at North Lake enjoying a variety of activities at sunset including picture taking on the dock, enjoying a

picnic basket, meeting with friends, or getting some exercise at the end of the day. One EMR resident said she enjoys the beauty of sunset at the lake and enjoys going because of “the light breeze and watching the palm trees swaying. Very tranquil ambiance out there!” Gathering to watch the sunset has a bit of anticipation with it: what will mother-nature provide tonight? Ever wonder where the sunset gets its colors? The white beam of light from the sun is scattered and the shorter wavelength light components, namely green and blue, are removed producing the typical reddish-orange color of the sunset. Throw in some clouds and you are likely in for an amazing sunset treat! While EMR residents take advantage of the North and South lakes as gathering spots to watch nature’s beauty, some EMR residents are able to watch sunsets from their backyard. Imagine being able to live in EMR where you can watch the sunset from your pool while enjoying your favorite drink? Did I mention that living in EMR is like living at a resort? Money Matters You might think you need to have a large estate or millions of dollars to benefit from working with a trust company, but that’s not the case. And if you’re not familiar with what a trust company can do, you might be surprised at all the services it can provide, including the following: • Wealth management – Typically, when working with a trust company, it can manage retirement accounts, monitor investments and disburse funds, make changes as needed and ensure compliance with government reporting for contributions, withdrawals and rollovers. While different companies operate in different ways, you may have an arrangement in which you work with a personal financial advisor and a separate portfolio manager. • Financial management during incapacity – If you were to become incapacitated and couldn’t make financial decisions, a trust company can step in, giving you peace of mind from knowing that your financial assets will be managed by a team of professionals, helping protect you and your family from potentially dire consequences. 3.5” x 2.5” | Maximum Font Size: 30 pt

•Trust administration – The company can act as trustee for a trust you’ve established, such as a revocable living trust, which can allow your estate to avoid probate while providing you with great control over how your assets will be distributed at your passing. Alternatively, the trust company can work alongside an individual you’ve designated to execute the terms of a trust. When it’s time to settle your estate, the trust company can handle the valuation, dispersion and re-titling of assets, pay off any debts and expenses, and complete any tax returns related to your estate. In addition to providing these practical services, a trust company may benefit you in a more intangible way. It’s unfortunate but true that, in many families, dividing up assets can cause conflict and bitter feelings. But when a trust company serves as trustee, it impartially administers distribution of the assets based on the instructions you’ve provided in the trust – helping minimize family disputes over inheritances. The Bug Guy

The hot Arizona sun can send temperatures skyrocketing in June with daytime highs of 115 degrees or more hitting the west valley. Humidity levels crash because the sun’s energy heats the air, preventing water vapor from being released. We all look forward to the sweet relief of monsoon season when high temperatures fall about 10 degrees to the 100-105 degree range and heavy rains soak the parched desert. During the monsoon period, the dew point temperatures can rise to the 55-65 degree level across the Phoenix metro area and the relative humidity can exceed 40 percent. This increase in humidity produces thunderstorms, which are more common in higher elevations but occasionally move onto the desert floor. Sometimes these thunderstorms carry little rain but produce a haboob, or dust storm. The most

intense haboobs lift dust over 5,000 feet into the air and travel up to 150 miles. Other times, thunderstorms across the Southwest produce torrential rain in a short period of time. In these situations, rivers, creeks or dry streams quickly fill and produce high water on roadways, even in cities like Goodyear and Buckeye. Monsoon season is a fact of life in the desert, but you might not realize they are a catalyst for some of the most dreaded winged creatures … termites. Termites love monsoon season, which sends them swarming by the hundreds as they search for that “special someone” with which to make babies and start a new colony. The moisture eventually draws them inside where they look for wood that comes in contact with house foundations and cracks in building exteriors. A firmly established termite colony can be difficult to eradicate and if left untreated, termites can cause structural damage to your home. It’s good idea to get ahead of curve with some preventative service before the seasonal pests can cause permanent and expensive damage. Now that the summer rains are imminent, it’s time to call your pest professional to protect your most important investment – your home. Stay Fit Seniors! It’s no secret that staying physically active supports overall well-being, especially for older adults. Improved health, lower health care costs and reduced hospital stays are some of the benefits enjoyed by active seniors, according to a recent nationwide study by Avalere Health and Tivity Health, a national provider of senior fitness, nutrition and healthy lifestyle solutions, including SilverSneakers, a community fitness program designed for older adults. The study compared new SilverSneakers participants and closely matched non-participating Medicare Advantage beneficiaries.

So how much are healthcare costs reduced by participating in this program? The study’s findings showed the total cost of medical care for participants to be 16% lower than for nonparticipants and total annual average health expenses among participants to be $4,463 compared to $5,303 for non-participants. That can make a big difference, especially for people with fixed incomes. “This research shows that seniors who are regularly engaged in more healthy behaviors enjoy improved health outcomes and lower health care costs compared to those who do not incorporate exercise in their daily routine,” said Julie Logue, fitness expert and senior trainer at Tivity Health. “More than just exercise, the impact of senior fitness is also emotional and social, providing older adults an opportunity to make meaningful connections with others.”

build endurance. Any movement is better than no movement, so be proud of your efforts. Listen to your body and when you need to rest or take a break. Research senior programs: Fitness programs focused on the needs of older adults help position you for success while also connecting you in community or virtually with likeminded people. SilverSneakers is a national fitness membership program that offers fitness classes designed for seniors at over 15,000 locations nationwide including a FLEX network outside of a traditional fitness center such as parks, medical centers and community centers. Check virtual options: Not everyone is comfortable with indoor fitness, so consider online alternatives. Members have access to more than 13,000 instructor-led live classes each month as well as over 200 classes in our OnDemand library. Check eligibility: Some health plans offer options for low-cost or no-cost fitness programs. For example, SilverSneakers is available at no cost for adults 65 and older through select Medicare plans. Visit silversneakers.com to verify eligibility. “Improving health and combating social isolation and loneliness are significant benefits of senior fitness, the measurable reduction in health care costs can’t be ignored,” said Logue. “There are a variety of programs to suit all interests, abilities and lifestyles to help seniors find safe, enjoyable and convenient ways to get moving today.”

She recommends the following tips to keep in mind when starting an exercise routine: Talk with your doctor: Before you try a new fitness routine or take a class, speak with your doctor to make sure it’s a good fit for your health needs. Teenage Dreams Just like that, I lost everything.

I was an average seventeen year old girl. I did well in school, played sports, and attended the usual high school events. I had lots of superficial friends, you know, like those people who tell you your hair looks good and ask, “How are you?” but don’t expect a genuine response. However, my best friends were amazing. Together we gossiped an unhealthy amount, drank way too much coffee, excessively watched scary movies, ate lots of junk food, and always listened to music at the loudest volume possible. Our usual problems consisted of immature boys, perfecting our appearance and family drama. All these experiences, good or bad, I always shared with my mom. She was everyone’s mom and the best person I’ll ever know. We would talk and laugh and had an unbreakable bond. I had gotten into a rhythm, a routine with all of these components in my life, and I was comfortable. I’d become so comfortable that I had even started planning my future. I’d dreamt of playing

in the senior night games with teammates I had grown to love. Fantasized about wild and carefree adventures with my best friends. Envisioned the day my name would be called, and as my principal handed me my diploma, I’d spot my mom in the audience looking at me with happy tears. How naive of me to think these fantasies would become reality. My mom passed away before the school year was over, and with her being a single mom, I had to move. Thankfully, I have been taken in by a family whom I grew up with and that I love greatly, but everything has changed. The life I had is now nothing but a memory. I am the same seventeen year old girl but now I have a new school, a new family, and so many lessons to learn. Follow along with my trials and tribulations as I navigate life as a teenage girl in 2021, let’s make this journey together. I’ll be back next month to share how things are going. If you have any advice, tips or experiences for me that can help me grow and learn, feel free to share! Sincerely, Ace

Summer Help

Being a teacher always comes with challenges, but through the uncertainties of the pandemic, it quickly became one of the toughest jobs in the country. Tasked with keeping students calm, engaged and learning - whether in school, at home or hybrid (not to mention added safety protocols) - was a big ask. Yet, as they always do, teachers rose to the challenge and helped keep students learning while providing a muchneeded sense of normalcy. As educators attempt to rest and refuel for next school year, summer is a great time to show you care and appreciate all they do. Here are five simple ways to give a little love back to the teachers that work so hard for students:

Volunteer Leverage your talents and interests to help out at local schools. Ask about what your family can do over the summer months to help the community and build school pride. Ask about maintaining the school garden or grounds, see if the library needs help sorting books, offer your time to assist teachers cleaning their rooms, or sign up

to volunteer during back-to-school days. Prevent summer learning loss During summer break, kids can lose valuable knowledge in reading and math - a phenomenon commonly referred to by educators as the “summer slide.” You can help prevent it by making learning a regular part of your child’s summer break by weaving in short activities throughout the day. Make your way through fun workbooks and try to read 20 minutes a day. Explore your local community by visiting a museum, growing a garden or visiting a park. Embrace STEAM and try building DaVinci’s Bridge with pencils or creating bookmarks from duct tape and craft supplies. Experiential learning is great for the summer months. Spread the good word During difficult times, words of encouragement and appreciation mean the world. Write a handwritten letter to the principal and share your appreciation for a specific teacher who made an impact on you this year. Go online and post positive reviews on educational websites. Encourage your child to speak positively about school by leading the way yourself - kids adopt and reflect your attitude, so show appreciation for teachers and a high value of education, and your children will do the same. Buy extra supplies According to The National Center for Education Statistics, 94% of teachers reported spending their own money on classroom supplies without reimbursement. Buy extra supplies for the classroom when school shopping and shop at Staples Stores where it benefits teachers directly: Starting July 1 through September 30, teachers earn 20% back in rewards on every purchase parents make when they sign up for Classroom Rewards. Teachers can register and parents can sign up at Staplesconnect.com/ classroomrewards. Teachers do so much for children and have been a pillar of hope and stability during the pandemic. These simple ideas will have a big impact while conveying your gratitude.

College Visits If you’re a high school junior or heading into your senior year, college is likely at the top of your mind - and probably your parents’ mind too. A campus visit, virtually or in-person, is a key way to narrow down your college choice. So, where do you begin? 1. Research schools Make a wish list of schools - from the size of the school and location to area of study and postgraduation career opportunities. It’s also a good idea to attend college fairs, so you can talk with college representatives and current students. From your list of schools, check out their options for touring the campus - either in-person or online. There may be limited capacity for inperson tours, so schedule early. By attending campus tours, you’ll get a feel for the campus environment, and if a particular college is a good fit for you. 2. Budget for campus visits Expenses for traveling to and from college tours can add up quickly. Know the maximum amount

that you or your parents are able to spend on these visits. This includes the cost of gas, airfare, food, accommodations and other activities. Consider even setting up a separate bank account for money to use toward college visits. That way, you’ll be prepared to stick to your budget. 3. Get your questions about classes and campus life answered Most in-person college visits are led by student tour guides - giving you a great opportunity to hear their perspective about academic programs, admissions and student life. Additionally, make use of a college’s offer to talk with current professors and students. If you’re unable to attend in-person, this is a way to still experience the school and people. Other questions to cover can include housing options, sports and extracurricular activities that interest you personally or are unique to a school. 4. Find out what financial aid options are available Look into financial aid options, such as scholarships, grants and work-study programs. When federal student loans, grants or scholarships don’t cover your total costs, private student loans are a great way to bridge the gap in funding.
