From Me To You...

We are at a new stage in our lives, we have finally arrived at our Empty Nest. It feels like an amazing achievement to be honest. I have had the responsibility of raising children since 1988 (with one year off for good behavior) and I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I am so proud of the adults we have raised who are leading their lives and forging their own paths. But before I can truly hand off all responsibility, I have to get the last two to the finish line - graduation and college. I just wound up two sets of final college tours, and let me tell you, I learned a few interesting things along the way. Not about college or even raising children. About the Wonderful World of Travel.

That is what my life has become of late. From Mom to travel agent in one easy step. Between scouring the internet for airfares, arranging hotel accommodation, and transportation at the college, I have barely had time to catch my breath. I did discover a way to save money on flights in the process. I was searching for cheap flights from Phoenix to Pullman, Washington. I know the normal routes and airlines that service

them, but during my search a new option popped up. I didn’t want to book with the cut-rate site that had the deal, but they did show me how to get my son from here to Pullman in less time, and saved me $300 in the process - book separate tickets through two different airlines! That moment when I had purchased the first fare and was trying to secure a seat on the next one gave me chills, but it all worked out in the end. He made it there and is on his way back as I write this.

This was his first solo adventure and although I was nervous that something would go wrong, he navigated it with ease. He even got to play in the snow, in April...

The upside of that experience is that I know he is going to be just fine on his own, and that eases the transition into the next stage of our lives.

But is it truly an empty nest? Not really, they are all still there with us, we just have to loosen the reins and let them do it on their own from here.

Online Safety It’s never been more important for parents to ensure their children are safe and staying productive online. With so many popular apps, websites and streaming services, keeping track of what your children are exposed to can be difficult. Even the most cautious kids can become victims of cybercrimes, especially child identity theft.

Children 18 years old and younger are often targets of identity theft because their unmarked credit scores and Social Security numbers are rarely monitored. According to a report by Javelin Research, child identity fraud costs families in the U.S. almost $1 billion a year and requires much time for parents to resolve. The report also found that 1.25 million children were victims of identity theft in 2021 and 1 in 50 children became an ID fraud victim in 2021 These statistics are frightening, but that doesn’t

mean that parents need to live in fear. By taking proactive steps to protect your children online, you can empower them to use technology responsibly while keeping them safe from potential online threats.

Child internet safety is not a new topic, but it’s become even more relevant to the public thanks to the rapidly growing number of social media platforms and other digital sites and apps.

The issue is so prevalent that it’s caught the attention of lawmakers. Introduced to the U.S. Senate in February, the Kids Online Safety Act is a bipartisan bill that would create new rules and safeguards to protect children from stalking, exploitation, addiction and dangerous materials online.

We’ve all heard the phrase “clean eating” but for some, creating a daily diet made up of only these foods can be intimidating, especially when looking to put a healthy meal on the table at the end of a busy day. Fortunately, “eating clean” doesn’t have to be daunting.

Fill your pantry with high-fiber whole grains (like 100% whole wheat pasta, bread, cereals and flour, and foods like quinoa, millet and brown rice). Add half the shake (5.5 fluid ounces) to each jar and mix until very well combined. Cover with lids and refrigerate at least 4 hours, or overnight.

Before serving, lightly toast pine nuts in a 400-degree oven for 3 minutes. Top each jar with 1/2 tablespoon roasted pine nuts, 1/2 teaspoon coconut shreds and a pinch cinnamon. Makes 2 servings.

Going EV? Electric vehicles (EVs) are increasing in popularity as drivers consider the operating cost of owning an automobile as well as the environmental impact of their commutes. The number of electric vehicle models available has nearly doubled in the last few years and the market is getting charged up. The rising demand for electric vehicles has led to a larger inventory of new and used plug-ins in the auto market.

“EVs have high safety ratings and offer a quieter ride,” said Kevin Quinn, vice president of auto claims at Mercury Insurance. “Add in low maintenance costs and the opportunity to reduce a vehicle owner’s carbon footprint, and it becomes very appealing to consumers who are looking to buy a new car.”

EV owners can also charge their vehicles with portable chargers, but how owners obtained those chargers could make a difference on which type of insurance would be needed. If the portable charger came from the dealership with the vehicle, it would be covered by their auto collision or comprehensive insurance. However, if EV owners purchase a portable charger after buying their vehicle, they may need special equipment coverage.

While reports of fires happening while EVs are parked and charging are rare, owners should always be mindful when charging their vehicles. “Electric vehicles are still relatively new to the marketplace so automakers are still perfecting them,” said Lee. “EV owners need to do their due diligence and make sure they’re properly educated about their manufacturer’s recommendations for proper charging.”

With more than 2 million electric cars on the road in the U.S., EV owners know that home charging is one of the most important aspects to owning an electric vehicle.

According to the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Home Charging Study, 84% of EV owners regularly charge their vehicle at home. It costs about half as much to charge an EV at home as it does to charge at a public station. Home chargers also offer the convenience of being programmed so they draw power during off-peak hours, saving EV owners money.

Most EVs come with a Level 1 charger allowing drivers to charge at their residence from a standard 120-volt household outlet. This method can take several hours, typically overnight, to get back most of the car’s range. For this reason, many EV owners purchase Level 2 charging stations to be installed in their home. Level 2 charging allows for a quicker charge using a 240volt outlet.

Caregiving Myths The number of baby boomers, a demographic with 52 million people who are 65 and older, is projected to double by 2060. Many from this group will want to stay in their homes. When you have pests in your home, whether insects or animals, you want them gone quickly. No one wants to live with bugs, mice, or other pests. It’s tempting to call the first exterminator that you come across. However, like any professional service provider, some exterminators are better than others. When your safety and the comfort of your home depend on it, it’s important to take the time to find a good exterminator.

Licensed & Insured In most states, exterminators need to be licensed. Make sure that anyone you are considering has a recent license and is insured.

In most states, insurance isn’t required. However, it can be a good thing for them to have, and most exterminators will have a general liability insurance policy.

Reputation Do a little digging online to review their history and record. Check with the BBB to see what their rating is. Look for online reviews too. How long has the company been around? Consider asking friends for recommendations. If you have a few exterminators in mind, and you’re not sure which one is going to be the best fit, ask for references.

Policies and Plans Finally, ask about their treatment plans. What pests do they treat and how do they treat them?

What chemicals do they use? How will the pesticides be applied? Are alternatives available and what is their cost? Do they offer integrated pest management? This is a type of pest management that strives to minimize the use of pesticides. If pesticides are required, do they offer instructions or recommendations to reduce your exposure? And do they offer a plan to protect your home against future pest problems?

Do they use a multidisciplinary approach where they use a variety of methods to clear your home of pests?

Finally, you’ll also want to ask if there is a guarantee. Most exterminators do guarantee their work. However, some will have exceptions and exclusions. When you are eliminating pests from your home it pays to do your homework.

Gratitude

Gratitude has been shown to help kids and adults practice resilience through tough times by focusing on the positive emotions that come with spending quality time with family and friends. Throughout the year, it’s important to find opportunities to reflect and think of ways to relieve the stress of today’s world and infuse gratitude and thankfulness into your family members’ lives. Try one of the following ways suggested by Joy Turner, Kiddie Academy Educational Child Care vice president of education, to help you practice gratitude with your children and family: 1. Head offline Dedicate some time during the week to spend offline - no electronics. Cell phones, video games, computers and tablets give short-term happiness. Spending time together making memories is what brings long-term happiness. As a family, share the things that make each other feel happy.

2. You’ve got mail Have everyone in the family write a thank-you letter to someone they care about. Be prepared with stationary or greeting cards and stamps.

Then, take a family walk to the mailbox or a trip to the post office after dinner to send them together.

3. Create a gratitude jar Invite your family to jot down things they’re grateful for on slips of paper and put them in a jar. Then, go around the table picking them out and taking turns reading them. Make sure to write the year of when you created the jar - year over year, you can look back on past jars.

4. Home is where the heart is Part of practicing gratitude is realizing that there are others who are in need. If you can, safely support a local group that helps people who are experiencing homelessness or gather food to take to a local food bank. Find a local organization that can help you make an impact and engage your child in the critical life lesson of giving back to those in need.

5. The grand finale - dinnertime Prepare your meals as a family! The act of preparing food with your family teaches children to be thankful and appreciative. It also provides a time to reconnect with family and focus on what is important in your lives.

With some resilience and a grateful attitude, you may create a new gratitude habit that will help your child’s character development.
