From Me To You...

After a long trip to check on my family I am firmly back in this country and in this time zone. I brought back all the chocolate I could fit into my suitcases and the most beautiful, delicate mugs from an art gallery. They are light, thin, perfect for a cuppa in the afternoon and even better, my Dad bought them for me.

He wanted to get me a gift and although he waved many options before my eyes, nothing seemed right. I had seen these beautiful mugs in an art gallery on one of my first days there, but I hesitated. They were expensive. But so beautiful.

The shape of them is wonderful to hold. Cradle.

The texture is sublime, almost soft to the touch, and there is an indentation for your thumb halfway up the vessel. It adds to the whole experience of sipping a warm cup of tea.

I did not think I would get them but in the end I made room in my luggage and dad bought me two! They made it all the way across the Atlantic in one piece (well one piece each) and I treasure them.

Until I get careless and I knock them against the sink, or drop them and then they will break.

Which they will, eventually. I am under no illusions about my ability to keep these safe and hand them down to successive generations. But I use them anyway.

That is one of the great secrets of life. If you have something you love, you should use it. Don’t hide it away in a cupboard in case the Queen comes for a visit. What if she never does? Then you are depriving yourself of a pleasure in life, saving it for a rainy day and, news flash, we live in a desert. If there is one thing I have learned from the last few years it is that nothing is guaranteed. Nothing is a sure thing. Take the trip, smell the roses, use the fancy mug.

Colon Cancer Studies show that many Americans have delayed routine health screenings during the pandemic.

Screenings can be life-saving, in particular with colonoscopies which can detect polyps or early cancers in the colon.

Polyps and colon cancers rarely create symptoms such as pain or bleeding. Early detection and treatment, even before symptoms appear, results in improved survival rates.

A concerning finding is that incidence of colon cancer is increasing among people younger than age 50. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has recommended that screenings begin at age 45.

The colon is the lowest part of the intestine, also called the large intestine. The inside lining of this six-foot long tube can give rise to growths called polyps, and some polyps can grow into colon cancer. Through colonoscopy, doctors can inspect the inside lining of the colon and remove polyps.

“Almost all colorectal cancers start with a polyp, which is small area of unchecked

growths on the inner lining of the colon. With colonoscopy we can remove polyps and which helps prevent cancers from forming,” explained Debora McClary, MD, a colorectal surgeon on the medical staff at Abrazo Health.

Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers in the Unites States, and the secondleading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., noted Dr. McClary. “Advanced colon cancer can be lethal so it’s important that we find early cancers or find them as polyps and get them completely removed.”

“In general, the risk of developing colon polyps and cancer increases as one ages, so the recommendation now is that patients have a screening colonoscopy around the age of 45 and every ten years thereafter until age 75,” added Ylli Zhubi, MD, a colorectal surgeon on the medical staff at Abrazo Health.

If a patient has a first-degree relative – such as a parent, sibling, or child – with colon cancer or colon polyps, one should consider being tested earlier than age 45 and more often, he said.

Dr. Zhubi acknowledged that some may want to avoid colonoscopy in favor of other screening options, a decision that is up to each individual.

“However, colonoscopy is the most sensitive method for picking up colon polyps and it allows us to remove colon polyps during the test,” he said.

Without a credit score or solid credit history, you may be unable to borrow money to buy a car, have trouble getting an apartment or job.

Your credit history is viewed by many as not just a summary of your creditworthiness, but also trustworthiness. Credit histories take time to build, and to some degree may indicate to others how good you are at managing your money.

To build and improve your credit history, here are important tips to follow.

1. Use credit - carefully Using a credit card to make small purchases, then paying them off on time is the best way to build your credit score. Your score will improve due to how long you hold credit accounts, and also by: * Making on-time payments every month * Using no more than 30% of your credit

* Not having too many lenders checking your credit at the same time * Not applying for multiple loans or credit cards at one time 2. Plan ahead to pay bills on time Use calendar reminders to keep track of payment due dates each month. If money is tight, contact creditors ahead of the due date to let them know you’re having difficulties, and to ask about options.

3. Apply for a personal loan or credit card Begin building your credit history by applying for a personal loan or a credit card. Keep in mind: Not all lenders will approve you without a credit history.

4. Become an authorized user Become an authorized user on someone else’s credit card account. This gives you the benefit of having that person’s credit payments included on your credit report. Being an authorized user is a great way to help build a positive credit history.

5. Check your credit score Checking your reports helps ensure that all the information is accurate, as well as showing you what factors may be impacting your score so you can make improvements.

Follow these tips consistently over time, and you’ll be able to build a solid credit history - and a better future.

Air Fryer Potato Crusted Lemon Pepper Salmon

Ingredients • Buttermilk Whipped Potatoes • 1-1/3 cup Water • 1 teaspoon Salt • ¼ cup Unsalted Butter, softened • ½ cup Milk • 2-2/3 cup Instant Mashed Potatoes • 1/3 cup Buttermilk • ¼ cup Sour Cream • Lemon Pepper Salmon • 1-1/2 pounds Salmon Filets, skin and pin bones removed Cut into 4-ounce pieces • 2 teaspoons Olive Oil • 2 Tablespoons Lemon Pepper Seasoning • 2 Tablespoons Fresh Chives, chopped Preparation 1. To prepare the mashed potatoes heat the water to a boil and add the salt and the butter.

When the butter is melted add the cold milk and stir in the instant mashed potato flakes. Allow the mixture to sit for about a minute, then fluff

with a fork. Gently fold in the buttermilk and the sour cream. Transfer the potatoes to a pastry bag or a resealable plastic bag with a star tip if desired (you can also gently spoon the mashed potatoes on top of the salmon if you don’t want to be super fancy). It’s important the potatoes be creamy but not too loose, otherwise they won’t stay on top of the salmon, and you will have a mess in your air fryer.

2. Place your salmon filets on the air fryer rack and lightly coat the filets with the olive oil.

Season the salmon all over with the lemon pepper seasoning and pipe some of the mashed potatoes on top of the salmon.

3. Set the air Fryer to 400 F and cook the salmon for 12 minutes, if you wish your salmon to be well done, cook it for 14 minutes. This of course depends on the starting temperature of your salmon as well as the thickness.

4. When the timer goes off, remove the salmon, the potatoes should be lightly golden and the salmon should be opaque but still moist.

5. Plate the salmon and garnish the dish with the fresh chopped chives and some fresh slices of lemon if desired.

Did you know hearing trouble is the third most common chronic health condition? The CDC reports that noise above 70 decibels (dB) over a prolonged period may start damaging your hearing, and noise above 120 dB can cause immediate harm. Not sure what decibel level you’re experiencing? Here’s an easy rule of thumb: If you have to shout to hear conversation, it’s too loud.

Here are common noise hazards you may encounter every day, and how you can protect your hearing.

1. Home projects Tools around the home, including lawn mowers, l and power tools, can be about 90-112 dB. This is considered a dangerous noise, especially when you use them for long periods of time.

2. Live music events When music is played for large audiences, the noise level is increased to about 110-130 dB. Even smaller venues using amplification can be dangerously loud. Listening to music at this volume for over an hour causes hearing loss, which is why musicians struggle with hearing loss more than most other people.

3. Exercise classes Fitness trainers often blast music to pump up everyone for the workout. Loud music in a small room can be about 80-116 dB, which increases everyone’s risk of hearing loss the longer they’re exposed to it.

4. Boating/driving/motorcycle riding If you’re boating, wind noise alone can be about 80-100 dB, on top of engine noise that may reach anywhere from 70-90 dB. According to the American Academy of Audiology, individuals driving with car windows down for more than an hour daily are three times as likely to have hearing loss. Motorcycle riders are exposed to engine noise that can reach up to 100 dB or more, in addition to wind noise.

How to protect yourself: * Wear high-quality hearing protection * Take “quiet breaks” * Shorten the duration of your noise exposure * Use power tools and equipment outside * Turn music down Because hearing loss occurs over time, limit incidents of exposure to overly loud environments as much as possible.

Home Sweet Home Nothing makes your home sparkle like a good Spring-cleaning session. If you have kids, pets, or are prone to asthma, using natural solutions offers you peace of mind while you’re disinfecting your spaces. There are plenty of natural, DIY cleaners just waiting for you in your pantry, and possibly even your fridge.

• Lemons: Cut up a lemon and place the slices in a bowl of water at the center of your microwave and cook it on high for five minutes. Once that timer beeps, allow it to rest for another two minutes before removing it (while wearing oven mitts, of course). Then, watch as those food particles encrusted to the walls wipe away effortlessly.

• Salt: When it comes to a fresh blood stain, cover it with salt and then blot it with cold water.

Continue until your stain disappears. Similarly, when you’re faced with removing red wine, use enough salt to cover the area and allow it to soak up the spilled liquid. Then, launder the item as you normally would.

• Distilled white vinegar: Add two cups of it to a dishwasher-safe cup or bowl and place it in the YOUR

top rack of your dishwasher.

Without any dishes or silverware inside, run your dishwasher on the hot cycle and say good-bye to that funky odor your appliance sometimes emits.

• Vodka: Look in your liquor cabinet for this natural remedy! If you have a pet who’s recently had an accident on your carpet, you know how challenging it can be to get that smell out.

Vodka to the rescue! Simply spritz the area with vodka and the odor will disappear as the alcohol evaporates.

• Ketchup: This condiment isn’t just a barbecue staple. Ketchup can shine up tarnished silver and brass and even stainless steel. Simply coat or submerge your item in ketchup for 10 minutes and then rub it back to its original luster.

In the summer, bee stings are to be expected as you head outdoors to enjoy parks and picnics.

Every year, bee stings send people to the emergency room. To keep your family protected when enjoying outdoor activities this summer, it’s important to know what to do for a bee sting and how to remove a stinger.

What are the symptoms of a bee sting?

Many stung by a bee will experience a sharp, burning pain followed by a red welt at the sting site. You will likely see a small white spot in the center of the welt where the stinger punctured the skin. The swelling and pain typically resolve within a few hours, but in some cases, individuals can develop a more severe reaction. For those who are allergic to bee stings, however, they could experience anaphylaxis, which could be deadly. Some symptoms of anaphylaxis include

rashes or hives, tongue or throat swelling, nausea and vomiting, wheezing, dizziness and loss of consciousness. Call 911 immediately if an individual experiences symptoms of this severe allergic reaction. If they have an EpiPen® use it immediately at the first signs of a severe allergic reaction.

What to do when you are stung by a bee: It is important to remove the stinger as quickly as possible. Pinch or scrape it, or swipe the edge of a flat object across the welt to dislodge the stinger. If a stinger is left in place, it could leave room for infections or cause a foreign body reaction. After removing the stinger, use soap and cold water to clean the area. Use a cold compress to alleviate some of the pain, you can also use anti-inflammatory medicines.

Antihistamine and hydrocortisone ointments are recommended to calm the local reaction.

How can you prevent bee stings?

The best way to prevent bee stings around the backyard is to avoid beehives. Bee colonies can become defensive and attack as a united front if they feel their nest is being threatened, so it is best to call in a licensed pest control professional to remove a nest. Unfortunately, while insect repellants work quite well for mosquitoes and ticks, they have little effect on bees. Keeping all these tips in mind will help lessen your chances of being stung and will leave room for more summer fun!

Mental Health These past couple of years have been challenging in lots of ways and many people, particularly older adults, have felt the weight and impact of loneliness and social isolation.

This has been especially true when staying home and sheltering in place has been recommended to increase safety. With less contact with others, it has been difficult for older adults to maintain the relationships that are so important to mental, as well as physical, well-being. In fact, loneliness has been found to lead to health risks, such as: * Depression * Poor sleep * Anxiety * Hypertension * Cognitive decline * Heart disease and stroke

It becomes incredibly important to understand these effects and impacts of loneliness and social isolation. You might think the two concepts are very similar, if not identical, but they have important distinctions. Loneliness is the feeling of being alone and social isolation is the lack of social contacts. A person can feel alone, even if they have a wide social circle and, on the flip side, it’s possible for someone to not have many social connections yet not feel alone.
