From Me To You... Those of you who know me understand that I love to travel. Covid put the kibosh on that for a while, but I am beginning to spread my wings again. In fact, I am writing to you from a foreign country - not the trip I planned, but it has it’s bright spots nevertheless. In my youth I would fill a backpack with whatever clothes were clean, grab my camera, and I was off. Not a care for creature comforts, not much planning at all, but with a ton of enthusiasm! As I have aged my requirements have changed somewhat. The itinerary is considered, reviews taken into account, and excursions mapped out along the way. Packing is more specific too; I have to factor in comfy shoes and adequate layering. What stays with me on the plane now must allow for all the electronic devices - plus chargers. The most useful necessity I travel with though, is my own pillow. I cannot emphasize enough the value of sleeping with the right pillow. Imagine traveling to a far-flung location and you can’t appreciate all the glory of those Roman ruins because you have a crick in your neck. It is the little things that make so much difference.

Then there is coffee. I do love my coffee, and recently, thanks to a discerning relative who introduced me to Nespresso, I have become a coffee snob. As with my pillow, a great cup of coffee sets me up for a wonderful start to my day. And as I only drink one cup a day, it has to be good! I used to travel and make-do with whatever coffee I could find, but on this last trip I decided that as I was going for an extended stay, and I knew that the only coffee on offer would be instant, I would have a machine shipped to my location. Oh boy am I glad I did. Not only did I find it for a third of the original price but now I can gift it to my hosts when I leave. You could say I gave them two gifts, the joy of a cheerful morning, plus a new appliance.

Catherine Uretsky Editor, Up The Hill Magazine info@estrellapublishing.com 623.398.5541

On this particular trip I am in the land I grew up in, so my packing became even more challenging. I had to bring enough clothes for varied weather possibilities, the aforementioned electronic devices, adapters so I don’t blow up said electronic devices, and most importantly, room to bring home delicacies form my youth. Although I can have almost anything shipped to me in the US, it is vastly more expensive, and I don’t get to try things first. Plus, there are Easter Eggs like you wouldn’t believe here. Giant hollow chocolate spheres filled with yummy confections!

On Our Cover Estrella resident Joe Perkins is featured on our cover this month, sitting under his Eagle Scout project, a shade structure for American Legion Post 53 in Buckeye.

Joe started his scouting adventure in 2014, with Pack 1213 in Magnolia, Texas. Over the next 8 years, Joe has had the privilege of living in 5 different states, belonging to 5 different Packs and 3 different Troops. His journey has taken him from Texas to Arizona to Louisiana to North Carolina and back to Arizona, each step of the way he was able to continue the path to Eagle. Joe had a strong desire to choose an Eagle Scout project that would serve local veterans. Reaching out to the American Legion Post 53, they offered up the idea of a shaded area over the picnic tables. This shaded environment would provide the veterans the opportunity to be outdoors and protected from the sun for years to come. The simplicity of the project provided Joe with experiences far beyond his expectation. Who would have thought the Pythagorean Theorem he just learned in school would be put to practical use? Working directly with the city planning department for permits, gave him insight to how local government works. Acquiring a Structural Engineer to guide him with such things as the depth and strength of poles, types of concrete, yep more math. Obtaining a Commercial Contractor to oversee the project, improved communications skills. Reaching out to family and friends asking for donations to fund the project, boosted his desire and belief in his endeavor. But most importantly, working closely with a Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

project mentor gave him confidence, leadership to direct others, communicate with a variety of different people and learning how to use an assortment of tools to efficiently complete the task. The road to Eagle has taken Joe on many adventures, along with many places across this great country. He has had several strong mentors influencing his direction from his Troop Leaders, his grandfather, Dave, and his dad who was his biggest inspiration, also an Eagle Scout. As a result of this journey, he aspires to be a Marine aviator. Congratulations Joe, we look forward to seeing you do great things in the future! Special thanks to Debbie Perkins for this article.

Live Long & Prosper Say goodbye to fad diets and fleeting exercise trends; it’s time to introduce yourself to a new way of living life to the fullest: The Blue Zones way. National Geographic researcher and bestselling author, Dan Buettner spent two decades researching areas of the world where people live the longest, healthiest lives, and identified five locations where people consistently live to 100 or beyond. He calls these areas “The Blue Zones”: * Sardinia, Italy * The islands of Okinawa, Japan * Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica * Ikaria, Greece * Loma Linda, California, United States Once these areas were established, Buettner and his team studied and identified the lifestyle

characteristics that might explain the longevity of those living in each location, including their diets, levels of physical activity, social networks, views on life’s purpose and more. His findings are fascinating, but to make things even better, they are simple and often fun to achieve. It’s 5 o’clock somewhere Raise a glass and smile because people in all Blue Zones drink alcohol moderately and regularly. The trick is to drink one or two glasses of wine, per day, with food or friends. Everyone can toast to that. Go ahead, skip the gym Regular physical activity is still an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but Buettner suggests moving naturally around your environment, doing things that you love. Grow a garden and tend to it daily. Walk to the store with friends. Just move your body naturally and frequently. Grab a buddy Successful centenarians in the Blue Zones put their families and friends first; they keep aging parents and grandparents nearby or in the home, they commit to a life partner, and keep a valued group of friends close. After a difficult 2021, and a rough start to 2022, it’s officially time to start living a better, longer, and happier way of life - the Blue Zones way.

friendly website is not only crucial to compete in today’s marketplace, but it can also be the difference maker in a business’ survival.

The last few years have brought incredible challenges to small and micro businesses (SMBs), plus some amazing stories of tenacity and survival. These businesses have seen enormous changes, fueled by consumer habits that are here to stay. If your small business does not yet have an online presence and hasn’t yet mastered ways to accept digitized payments online or in-store, now’s the time to get on board. E-commerce has grown exponentially and it’s not going anywhere. Plenty of tools and tactics are available to help any size business develop and grow their e-commerce capabilities. Here are some tips to help get your business where it needs to be. Create or improve your website Developing an attractive, seamless and user-

DaveHardySolar.Estrella@gmail.com

If you don’t have a website, start here: * Make sure your web address/URL is easy to say, spell and remember. * Select a website host and platform. The host allows your website to have connectivity to the internet, while the platform helps you design and build your website. * If you don’t have a web designer on staff, hire a professional to design a website that’s easy to navigate, and that helps consumers quickly understand your business, its services or products. Create new ways for customers to make digital payments “More than ever, people are engaging across multiple channels - shopping online, in-store and through mobile apps,” said Jeni Mundy, Global SVP Merchant Sales & Acquiring at Visa. “We’ve seen that SMBs who have embraced digital commerce and made changes to the way they operate not only have weathered the pandemic better but are also setting themselves up to thrive in the future.” Build customer loyalty and engagement Social media platforms can help you attract new customers, engage with them and reward their participation and loyalty. Creating content like blogs as well as encouraging customer reviews and postings can help build a sense of community with your customer base.

The Great Reset To help you understand how to navigate the unique, rapidly changing job market, Rob Mundell, senior vice president of Talent Solutions at Charles Schwab, shared his advice for people navigating the job market at every stage of their careers. “Now is a great time to think about how to make the most of your career, but not everyone knows where to start. One of the most fulfilling parts of my job is helping people along that journey,” says Mundell.

Entering the workforce: Scale up your networking Those looking for a new role should be engaging with their network regularly to help uncover positions that could be their dream role. Think about it, remote work has made it far easier to schedule a 30-minute video call than it is to meet for coffee, and networkers are likely to find more luck today convincing people to take the time to chat in a virtual setting. Reach out and ask for informational interviews. Virtual career events, which are available through schools or professional organizations, have become increasingly common.

Call now and Save!

Rejoining the workforce after a break: Tell your story A critical skill many individuals in the job market have had to display is the ability to practice perseverance. The good news is that experiencing an employment gap is less of a deal-breaker than job seekers may think, and most companies are sympathetic to the challenges job seekers have faced. In this environment, storytelling is critical. For example, if you had to take time off work to care for family members or prioritize yourself, these are relevant attributes for an employer to consider. Now more than ever, companies are looking for resiliency, work ethic and passion, so don’t undersell your story. Being part of The Great Reset does not always require leaving your current employer - in fact, as employers work to retain talent, more are willing to accommodate internal career moves. Regardless of what position you’re interested in, leverage your experience. Don’t underestimate the unique perspective you bring from your knowledge and time within the company.

Internet Safety Today, Americans lose more money to digital crime than to home burglary. About 80% of U.S. adults say they are not doing enough to protect their personal information online, however, most don’t know where to start conversations with their families about internet safety. Here are five tips you can follow to stay safe online. 1. Get creative with passwords While it’s easier to remember a few passwords for many accounts, you are leaving your family open to identity theft and other cyberattacks. Update your passwords to consist of a random combination of letters, numbers and symbols. 2. Tighten up your social media privacy Most people provide personal information like their name, birthday, job and hometown on social media without a second thought. To help prevent identity theft, review the privacy settings for your social media platforms. 3. Don’t ignore updates Don’t ignore system and browser updates as they provide critical updates that protect

against hackers and fix any critical issues in software. When possible, enroll in automatic updates and use antivirus software, antispyware and a firewall on your computer.

4. Avoid suspicious websites When shopping online, it’s crucial to know what makes a website safe to explore. Check to see if “https” appears in the URL. Also, review the site for misspellings, grammar mistakes and lowquality images. 5. Stay alert for phishing scams Phishing attacks are emails, phone calls and texts that appear to come from a reputable source but attempt to instill fear and urgency in the recipient. Phishing scams offer too-good-to-betrue deals, urgent notification to reset an account login or contain an attachment or hyperlinks. To protect your family against phishing, teach your loved ones to: * Never share credit card details or sensitive personal information like your Social Security number via email or phone. * Don’t open any attachments or click embedded links. * Don’t download software from unknown email addresses.

Home Sweet Home 5 Lucky items to give your home good vibes The leprechaun has become one of the most popular good luck symbols associated with Saint Patrick’s Day. But don’t worry, you don’t need to decorate your entire home with these little green mischievous practical jokers. If you are looking to bring good luck into your home here is a list of traditions and ideas for you to try. 1. Burn sage: For centuries, white sage has been used to drive out bad energy and keep your home safe from unwanted visitors. It’s thought to have healing properties and calm nerves. The qualities of sage have been recognized by scientists, who found burning it can reduce the number of airborne bacteria by 94%. 2. Adopt a fish: These watery pets are believed to bring good luck. Fish are thought to absorb negative energy in the home, and they can also symbolize health, happiness, abundance, prosperity, and wealth. 3. YOUR

associated with peace, while peaches represent immortality. Nine oranges in a room are said to ward off bad luck, while pomegranates are believed to promote fertility. 4. Dream catcher: Stemming from Native American cultures, the dream catcher is designed to capture nightmares and evil spirits, making the owner happier and more balanced. These attractive items usually have a web-like design and are decorated with beads and feathers, so they’re a treat for the eye as well as for your mood. 5. Love elephants: Widely regarded as lucky, the noble elephant is a symbol of wisdom and strength. Bring some of their peaceful vibes into your home with some beautiful artworks or ornaments featuring these gentle giants. Changing your luck could be as simple as buying some fish, putting fruit in a bowl, or burning some sage. Pick the method that works best for your home. Good Luck! The Bug Guy

piles of natural or artificial debris, or rocks. They will also utilize underground burrows of other animals. In the winter, they retreat into caves or similar places to hibernate. These snakes can live approximately 15-20 years in captivity and can range in size from 3 to 5 feet long with a few reaching 7 feet long.

Spring in the desert, certainly, is the best time of year! Comfortable weather, not too hot, not too cold unfortunately some of the animals we share the desert with feel the same way.

The rattle of the rattlesnake is made up of a protein called keratin (the same protein that your hair and fingernails are made of). A new segment is added each time a rattlesnake sheds, but they can shed at different rates. Because of this, and the fact that segments can break off, you really can’t tell a snake’s age by counting the segments. A rattlesnake can move its rattle back and forth 60 or more times per second.

Western diamondback rattlesnakes are pit vipers. This means that they have a heat sensing pit located behind each nostril that can detect differences in temperature, sometimes differences that are only a fraction of a degree apart. The heat given off by an animal is detected by the snake helping it to determine predator from prey. This snake is considered a generalist, which means that it isn’t too picky about its habitat. It can be found living in deserts, grassy plains, forests, rocky hillsides and areas along the coast. It lives in elevations from below sea level up to 6500 feet (2000m). This species ranges throughout the southwestern United States (Arizona, California, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas) and northern half of Mexico. Mice, rats, rabbits, gophers, ground dwelling birds, lizards and other small animals make up the diet of this snake. They also have many predators, and not always because the predator wants to eat them. Animals such as deer, antelope, cows and horses regard the diamondback as a threat, and they may try to trample or stomp the snake. Eagles, hawks, roadrunners, kingsnakes, coyote, bobcats or foxes however are predators who look at these snakes as a source of food.

Rattlesnake prevention methods can include habitat modification and alteration. Areas around your home can be addressed to make it less appealing to rattlesnakes. Controlling prey populations is another key way to prevent a rattlesnake encounter. Submitted by Larry Cash, of Estrella Mountain Pest Control

DIY Décor

Spending the winter months indoors, living spaces can quickly lose their luster. There are plenty of ways, however, to revamp your home and the good news is you don’t have to spend a lot of time or money to do it. Here are four ways to give your home a fresh start Update your living space If you’re ready for a new look, adding some throw pillows is the best way to elevate your home’s décor. Yes, they are soft and comfortable but, they aren’t just fluff. By adding throw pillows in various sizes and incorporating new colors, you’ll be amazed how it transforms your living room into a cozy oasis for your human and furry family. Freshen the air Adding a fresh scent to your indoor air provides a welcoming atmosphere. There are multiple ways to give yourself and your family a breath of fresh air. Try simmer pots with seasonal scents, candles or diffusers, and carpet deodorizer made from baking soda and essential oils, especially if you have pets.

Bring the Outdoors In Houseplants are another excellent way to breathe life into your surroundings. Plants placed throughout the home can brighten and energize a room. There are varieties of plants that need a ton of sun, while others prefer shade or there are 50/50 mixes. So, seek varieties that work with your aesthetic, lighting and space. In your quest to find the perfect plant, don’t overlook the planter. Go bold with patterns or colors to liven up a bland space that could use a punch of pizazz. Accent walls A fresh coat of paint can completely change the look of your home and freshen up dated living spaces. Choose a complementary or accent color to go on one wall with neutral colors on the other walls to perk up a room. Don’t want to paint? Easy-to-apply, removable wallpaper comes in a variety of colors, textures and patterns. Get creative with patterns and designs from jungle scenes to floral to geometric or retro. The best part is that you can remove it easily when you no longer enjoy it. So, add a home refresh to your to-do list and refresh your home with a brighter, airier outlook.
