Welcome to 2024! We made it once more around the sun on our journey through time - a rollercoaster ride that we’re all strapped into, and Father Time is the mischievous carnival barker, egging us on with his relentless ticking.

He’s the ultimate stand-up comedian, dropping punchlines in the form of birthdays, deadlines, and unexpected plot twists. The New Year, with its glittering ball drop and champagne toasts, is just Time’s way of saying, “Hey, buckle up for another lap around the sun!”

Now, let’s talk resolutions. The New Year’s resolutions are the punchlines we come up with to counter Time’s relentless jesting. We promise ourselves to hit the gym, eat more greens, and finally learn that elusive salsa dance. But let’s be honest, Father Time is sitting in the audience, snickering at our well-intentioned attempts to outwit him. “Oh, you think a gym membership is going to stop me?” he chuckles, adjusting his scythe.

As the clock strikes midnight, it’s as if the universe is delivering its own punchline—

“Surprise! You made it to the next level!” We cheer, we hug, and we sing “Auld Lang Syne” with gusto, as if by sheer celebration, we can slow down Time’s relentless march.

In this grand comedy of existence, the New Year is our chance to join the laughter, to embrace the absurdity of resolutions, and to revel in the unpredictable hilarity that time throws our way.

It’s a reminder that we have the power to find joy in the journey, to laugh at life’s quirks, and to share a good-natured guffaw with the ultimate timekeeper himself.

So, here’s to another year in the cosmic comedy club! May your New Year be filled with laughter, resilience in the face of cosmic jokes, and the wisdom to appreciate the punchlines that make this wild ride worthwhile. Green Thumb Since the inception of the Estrella Community Garden at Presidio in 2021, the garden committee has looked for ways to bring the “Community” to the Community Garden. We were so pleased when Girl Scout Troop 2894 heard our call! The Girl Scouts is a long-standing tradition amongst our young women and the garden committee wanted to see how we could assist the next generation. As you may or may not know, Girl Scouts work on attaining badges for many different areas as they progress through the ranks of Daisies to Ambassadors.

One which you might be more familiar with-say it all together...Girl Scout Cookie Sales! But oh... there are so many more! Ranging from Robotics to Democracy and everything in between. Our goal at the Garden is to provide a classroom for the Girl Scouts that gets them outdoors and their hands dirty!

So now, we invite the rest of the Estrella Community to our “Community Garden”! Each month during our season (September-June) we host Second Saturdays at the Garden. An hourlong activity that will prove to heal thy soul and

leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated!

Come pick some fresh herbs, learn about the benefits of composting, improving your irrigation or hear from a Master Gardener.

This is a learning platform for all skill sets, and welcome you to learn alongside us. Whether you are a seasoned gardener or have been doing it all your life, there is something for everyone! Our Second Saturday events are from 9am-10am and are a great way to get out and meet your fellow Estrella/Canta Mia neighbors...not to mention the view is beautiful.

If you are not familiar with the Gardens location, it is at the Southeast corner of the Presidio parking lot. It is open from Sunrise to Sunset.

Even if you are not a plot owner, we invite you to enjoy the serenity- read a book, chat with a friend, enjoy the scents of the Estella Community Garden and reset. It’s that powerful!

Yum Yum New Year’s Day Black-Eyed Peas

Total Time 60 minutes (plus soaking) Ingredients 8 servings 2 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling 4 oz. slab bacon, cut into ½” pieces (optional) 1 medium onion, finely chopped 5 sprigs thyme, plus leaves for serving 4 garlic cloves, smashed 2 cups dried black-eyed peas, soaked overnight, drained Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper Step 1 Warm 2 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil in a large saucepan on the stovetop over medium heat.

using), and cook, stirring occasionally, until some of the fat begins to collect in the pan and bacon starts to look shiny, about 5 minutes.

Step 2 Add 1 medium onion, finely chopped and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden and tender, about 5 minutes. Add 5 sprigs thyme, 4 garlic cloves, smashed, 2 cups dried black-eyed peas, soaked overnight, drained, and 8 cups cold water and bring to a simmer over medium-high.

Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer gently, skimming any foam from surface, until beans are tender, 35–45 minutes. Discard thyme; season with kosher salt.

Step 3 To serve, drizzle beans with extra-virgin olive oil and top with thyme leaves and freshly ground black pepper.

Do Ahead: Dried beans can be cooked 3 days ahead. Let cool; cover and chill.

Resolutions

The tradition of making New Year resolutions has a long and diverse history, rooted in various cultural and religious practices that span centuries. The concept of setting goals for selfimprovement and reflecting on personal growth as the year comes to a close is a common thread that weaves through different societies and time periods.

One of the earliest recorded instances of New Year resolutions can be traced back to ancient Babylon, around 4,000 years ago. The Babylonians celebrated the New Year with an 11-day festival called Akitu, during which they made promises to the gods to repay debts and return borrowed objects. These promises were considered a way of starting the year with a clean slate and ensuring the favor of the gods.

In the modern era, the tradition of making New Year resolutions has become a global phenomenon, with people from various cultures participating in the practice. While the resolutions themselves may vary, common themes include health and fitness, financial stability, personal relationships, and career advancement. The tradition has also been influenced by the rise of self-help literature and the wellness movement, which promote the idea of continuous self-improvement.
