From Me To You...

Have you heard of the Sandwich Generation?

It sounds like a great place to be, right? Grilled cheese, or ham and cheddar on wheat bread with a pickle on the side? Actually it is none of those. What it does involve is having children who are growing up (or have grown and fled the nest) then all of a sudden, your reliably independent parents slip and break a hip, or they don’t seem to remember like they used to, or they just need you to help them get by with daily tasks. You are sandwiched in between both generations, taking on the burden - sometimes all at once - of caring for everyone.

It is a tough spot to be in, not one that most of us prepare for, and not one that most of our parents desire either. The awkward conversations arise. Who tells Dad he should not be driving anymore? Is someone able to help Mom make sure she takes her medication? Did anyone mention plans for later life? Is there money put aside for long term care? Is there a will? Did anyone talk to Mom and Dad about funerals, or cremation?

I have had most of these conversations with my parents and my in-laws in the last few months.

Some of them out of necessity and some so we can all be prepared. Let me tell you, it is not easy. Then, just when you think you have it all locked in place, the future you were preparing for may end up not being the one that comes about. My mother has always planned on aging in place. She has a chair lift so she can get to her room, a life alert device so she can call for help if necessary, a cleaning service to keep up with the housework and a local meal delivery service so her freezer is fully stocked. Then there are the friends who pop by to check on her and keep her spirits up should she feel lonely. Sounds perfect, right? Well all of this was premedicated on her declining physically. The problem that is beginning to arise is that due to Long Covid (the lasting, nasty effects of the disease), she is facing other challenges. losing words, and it is driving her crazy. She is most likely having mini strokes causing the memory and coherence issues, and that is creating a situation we did not anticipate. How long can she stay in her perfect home? That is a question I am having to come to terms with. The future we all planned together has gone and a new alternative is before us.

We will navigate it, sandwiched between other responsibilities and the need to parent our parents.

What I would like you to come away from this letter with, is the understanding that planning is key. Not just for the obvious things, but for other eventualities. If you have a resolution this year that you follow through on, it should be this.

Plan your estate. I don’t care if you are 24 or 74, you need to let people know what your wishes are- in every eventuality you can imagine. Start a conversation with your loved ones and take some of that burden away from them - you can even bring sandwiches.

Bell Ringers

This year has given us a whole new meaning to “ringing in” the Holiday Season. The Estrella REALTOR® Networking Group and The Salvation Army teamed up to ring the iconic red bell at Safeway during Real Estate Wednesdays in December.

This group effort not only brought forth a lot of great dance moves and holiday fun but also amazing contributions to support local families. The Salvation Army exists to meet human needs wherever, whenever, and however they can, and it was our honor and privilege to play a small role in that.

This is our first year serving as bell ringers, and the group fundraising goal was $1,000.

Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our community, we raised over $700 the very first day! With such enthusiasm and spirit surrounding the bell ringing, the group has already set an exciting goal for 2022.

The Estrella REALTOR® Networking Group is always looking for new ways to support our community, and in 2021 we were able to help build the Estrella Community Garden and provide scholarships to our schools. Our group firmly believes neighbors helping neighbors is what makes Estrella a special place to live.

The Bug Guy

As I look back on where we were last January, I am humbled by how far we have come, and how much we have overcome. COVID-19 and its variants have touched our lives in ways we never saw coming, my family has suffered through this, as have a lot of yours too. Together we have risen to the challenge, and I believe that we are on the climb out of this COVID event. Together there is nothing we can’t accomplish! Together we will beat this! Together we will look back on this and say, “you can’t beat us”. Together we will prevail!

While we can prevail and overcome as a society, other species are also looking to prevail.

Specifically, rodents, rats, and mice are very prevalent right now. With a mild fall and a mild winter, we can expect to see an increase in vermin activity. Here area few signs to look for:

These rodents find habitats in and around your home. The following are some typical nesting examples: 1. Pack rats like to nest at ground level, around BBQ grills, pool equipment, and other items that can appear to be a safe place. Nests are often comprised of bits of cactus, pieces of cloth or material, almost anything that they can use to create a comfortable habitat.

2. We also see mice nesting in patio furniture cushions and inside umbrellas that have been stored for the winter. Mice can also nest in your attic or garage, winter makes attics prime real estate for mice.

3. We are seeing an increasing rise in another rodent species, Pocket Gophers. These gopher’s burrow and leave a small entry hole approximately 2-3 inches in diameter. These holes are generally close to a large rock or other landscape feature.

4. While we also have Kangaroo rats as another of our desert dwelling rodents, they are not a common occurrence. Kangaroo rats typically nest in low ground bushes.

Look around your home and property for these signs and potential habitats. If you suspect that you have a rodent infestation, it is in your best interest to call a professional exterminator for an inspection and to determine the correct course of action to address the infestation.

Covid Testing When you think about efforts to fight the spread of COVID-19, vaccinations, hand washing and masking likely come to mind. However, one important effort that must remain the first line of defense is effective testing. Testing, combined with other defensive measures, is essential to keeping ourselves and our loved ones safe. The two main types of tests authorized for detecting COVID-19 are polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests and antigen tests. Here is what you need to know about both: Antigen tests Also referred to as rapid tests or rapid antigen tests, these tests work by quickly identifying protein fragments from a virus and providing test results in about 15 minutes. Despite being fast, antigen tests can be less accurate than other testing options because they are less sensitive. Because no special equipment is needed, antigen tests may be performed in various community settings or at home. This convenience has made antigen tests, particularly at-home options, popular when quick results are needed, as when returning to an office or preparing for an event like a vacation.

However, there is more room for error when self-testing, as opposed to having a test administered by a trained professional.

When to take it: When in need of results quickly Speed: Results usually available in 15 minutes

Chance of user error: High Ease of use: Doesn’t require equipment or chemicals; easy to use at home or point of care Effectiveness on variants: Low PCR tests PCR tests are also referred to as molecular tests, viral RNA tests or nucleic acid tests. These require special equipment and are typically sent to a lab, with results often available within 24 hours, depending on location. Some PCR tests provide results in just 20 minutes, however, these tests are mostly available in healthcare environments, such as hospitals. Why would someone use a test that takes longer to get results? The answer: accuracy. PCR tests have remained a touchstone in diagnostics due to their heightened accuracy over antigen tests.

They are highly sensitive and can detect very small amounts of virus genetic material in a sample, such as viral DNA. These tests have a sensitivity of about 98%, much higher than comparative data for antigen tests. This is why PCR tests can detect active infections nearly every time, and it is rare for someone uninfected to receive a positive test.

National Historic Trails Interpretive Center celebrates 20 years If you’ve always been fascinated by the legends of the American West, the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center in Casper will be right up your alley - or wagon trail. Founded 20 years ago, the center commemorates American Indian history and the early explorers, with an emphasis on the many historic trails that have gone through Casper, including the famed Oregon, Mormon, California and Pony Express trails, as well as the Bridger and Bozeman trails. You can still see some of the remaining ruts of these trails in the area today, allowing you to imagine the legendary journeys of everyone from fur trappers and homesteaders to ranchers, miners and more as they traveled West.

When you’re ready to travel, Casper has plenty of wide-open spaces and things to do, all while practicing social distancing.

Dental Care

It’s no secret, the holidays are a sweet time of year with seemingly endless sugary snacks, drinks and desserts. That, coupled with a long break from school can mean grazing in-between meals is at an all-time high for families across the nation. Dr. Jeannie Beauchamp, president of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, shares her top teeth tips. * Schedule (or reschedule) those dental appointments: Like many other medical appointments, pediatric dental check-ups have been pushed off during the pandemic, causing cavity-prone kids. Dr. Beauchamp has noticed an increase in cavities, tooth decay and longer cleaning times in patients. Preventive dental appointments not only catch compromised teeth but offer children educational reinforcement on proper dental cleaning and habits. Leaving cavities untreated can result in larger, lasting health issues. * Teeth are NOT present openers: Teeth make for excellent tools when it comes to eating, drinking and enunciating. But spare those tiny teeth when it comes to opening packages, snacks or presents. This can lead to weakened enamel and expensive and painful repairs. * Avoid constant snacking: It’s important to limit in-between meal snacking to prevent unwanted wear and tear on teeth that can

cause the tooth enamel to weaken and lead to tooth decay or cavities. Dr. Beauchamp also warned, many children might have fallen into a pattern of grazing throughout the day due to digital learning and encourages families to set boundaries when snacking. * Keep a routine: Make brushing and flossing a priority and ensure kids brush thoroughly for two minutes at least twice a day. Keeping a routine means preventive dental appoints as well, shared Dr. Beauchamp. With regular pediatric dental appointments, there are fewer dental emergencies. * Water, water, water! Drinking water in between meals encourages saliva, washes away bacteria/ food debris, and neutralizes plaque acids. This includes drinking fluoridated water, proven to keep teeth strong and reduce cavities.
