We built a home in Estrella last year to use for vacations and eventually become snowbirds, at least that was the plan. As we came down for getaways we fell in love with Estrella, our neighbors, and the overall community. We decided this would be our forever home. So, we packed up and left rainy Portland Oregon in the rear-view mirror and came down to Estrella full time. We purchased an amazing pool building and landscaping company with a 25-year track record of high-quality projects. We are excited to bring our quality and service to our Estrella neighbors.

From Me To You... You know that feeling you get when something bad happens, or is about to happen? The pit in your stomach. The feeling that you have a gaping chasm opening up inside and all hope is lost. A sense of impending doom.
and living a life away from home I still get uneasy when I know they are driving long distances, or even just driving late at night. My parental radar goes into overdrive and nothing is right until I know all my ‘babies’ are safe. Silly, right? There is nothing I could do to help them if they did get into trouble, but nevertheless I am on high alert.
Quite dramatic I know, but about this time last year I felt that all was not well in the world. I talked to my husband about it at the time, dismissing it as worrying for no good reason. Well it turns out that maybe I did have a good reason. Not that I knew Covid-19 was going to cause a global pandemic and turn our world inside out forever. But I knew, deep down, something was ‘off’.
Perhaps it is also because my children are still in the phase of their lives where they truly believe themselves to be indestructible. The feeling that they can conquer the world and nothing can harm them. Perhaps that is because I have been in front of them, every step of the way so far, clearing the path and reducing the risks, checking for danger before they see anything amiss. Perhaps it is endemic in all young adults.
We often have these gut feelings and as a woman I know them well. Although it took living in America to bring them out of me. Walking down a dark, deserted street at night in my youth I have felt misgivings. A sense that something was not quite right. Perhaps it was that person walking towards me or a noise behind me. I learned to trust those instincts and duck into a storefront or cross the street to a well lit area, or to just book it out of there as fast as I could. Living in New York in the early 90’s you learned to be street savvy pretty quickly.
Whatever the reason it is an important right of passage. Without that lack of fear I would never have blazed a trail across the world, bringing me to this country and creating the life I have now. So pay attention to that little voice in your head — but don’t let it stop you from conquering your own challenges and getting the life you want.
Now my instincts revolve more around my children. Even though they are mostly grown up

Adopt A Pet
Before you foster or adopt - and especially when considering a pet as a gift - it’s best to make sure you’re ready not just for the fun and companionship pets can bring, but also for the responsibilities. Preparing thoughtfully in advance will ensure you and your new pet are happy and comfortable at home. “This year has been so unexpected, but one constant is that animals always bring positivity and comfort,” says veterinarian Dr. Marty Becker, founder and CEO of Fear Free. “If you’re preparing to adopt or foster a pet, it’s important to ease their transition into your home.” Here are questions to ask before bringing a new furry friend home. 1. Does your living situation allow pets? If you live in a rental, there are likely animal rules. Even if pets are allowed, additional fees might be added to help pay for possible damage or cleaning. Be sure to identify any such limitations before adopting or fostering a pet.
Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine
2. Do you have everything you need? With pets come supplies: food and dishes, toys, bedding, litter boxes (for cats), leashes (for dogs), plus cleaning supplies. Make sure you’re prepared with enough funds to support the ongoing needs of your four-legged pal. 3. Will you have time to spend with your pet? Now it may feel like you have plenty of time to take walks, play with pets and cuddle, especially while family members are working and learning at home. However, since we might not always be remote, it’s important to plan for changes in schedules down the road. 4. Can you create a relationship with a veterinarian? If you don’t already have a veterinarian in mind, start looking for one in your area. Ask pet-loving friends, neighbors and family for recommendations. Once you find a vet, call ahead to inquire about wellness visits, and establish a relationship so you’re prepared. Spending time preparing now will create more time to relax and play with your new best friend later. Being a pet parent is a rewarding gift especially now - because it offers opportunities to increase your capacity for responsibility, compassion and play.

The Bug Guy
2020 was a challenge for all of us. I encourage every one of you to do something, anything to help your family, friends, and neighbors to have a better 2021. It can be as simple as saying good morning, to as extravagant as paying for the next persons order at the drive thru. You can put your elderly neighbors trash bins away for them or ask if they need anything from the grocery store. Its not hard to do something kind for someone, in fact, it is easy. The little acts of kindness can change the day for someone having a rough day or week. While we don’t have snow and the opportunity to offer to shovel our neighbor’s sidewalk, it is January and very cold in other areas of the country this time of year. These temperatures around the country bring us our winter neighbors. You can often tell a snowbird from a permanent resident as they wear long pants in the winter. Even our permanent residents may be rethinking their attire as this winter is slated to be a little warmer and drier than last year, and so far, that has been the case. With this weather pattern we can expect to see a “higher than
normal” volume of bugs and a definite increase in termite activity! Here are a couple things you should be aware of to help keep your dwellings as safe as possible: Termite activity is commonly visible as small dirt colored shelter tube coming from the ground up the foundation wall and then disappearing into the lower edge of the stucco. Shelter tubes may also be visible inside the house as dirt-colored tubes on an interior wall and possibly hanging from the ceiling, like a stalactite. Termites are not a DIY treatment. Therefore, we recommend a professional inspection if you see any of these signs on the exterior or interior of your home to validate whether you have an infestation. This inspection will provide recommended treatment to protect your home from further damage. Submitted by Larry Cash, of Estrella Mountain Pest Control, Estrella Resident

Money Matters Now that 2021 is upon us, we can make a fresh start – and one way to do that is to make some New Year’s resolutions. Of course, you can make these resolutions for all parts of your life but have you ever considered some financial resolutions? Here are a few such resolutions to consider: • Don’t overreact to events. When the coronavirus pandemic hit, the financial markets took a big hit. Many people, convinced that we were in for a prolonged slump, decided to take a “time out” and headed to the investment sidelines. But it didn’t take long for the markets to rally, rewarding those patient investors who stayed the course. The events of 2020 followed a familiar historical pattern: major crisis followed by market drop followed by strong recovery. • Be prepared. At the beginning of 2020, nobody was anticipating a worldwide pandemic and its terrible consequences, both to individuals’ health and to their economic wellbeing. None of us can foretell the future, but we can be prepared by building an emergency fund. Ideally, such a fund should contain at least six 3.5” x 2.5” | Maximum Size: 30 pt months’ worth of living Font expenses.
• Focus on moves you can control. In response to pandemic-related economic pressures, some employers cut their matching contributions to 401(k) plans in 2020. Will some future event cause another such reduction? Instead of worrying about things you can’t control, focus on those you can. When it comes to your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan, put in as much as you can afford this year, and if your salary goes up, increase your contribution. • Recognize your ability to build savings. During the pandemic, the personal savings rate shot up, hitting a record of 33% in April, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economy Analysis. Of course, much of this surge was due to our lack of options for spending it. When we reach a post-pandemic world, see if you can continue saving more than you did in previous years – and use your savings wisely. These aren’t the only financial resolutions you can make – but following them may help you develop habits that could benefit you in 2021 and beyond. Home Sweet Home If you’re a homeowner, making some New Year’s resolutions may pay dividends all year long. Take a look at four easy to implement improvements that won’t break the bank. In fact, some may even put money back in your pocket.
1. Conserve Energy. Commit to turning off lights in rooms you’re not using and unplugging gadgets not being used. From coffee makers to laptops, you may be squandering energy and dollars. Be sure to properly maintain your heating and cooling systems so they’re operating optimally. Look for leaks around your windows and doors. Caulk the drafty areas or consider installing new energy-efficient windows and doors, this helps keep heat or air-conditioning in your home where it belongs. 2. Do a Safety Check. Knowing your home is safe and secure offers priceless peace of mind. If you didn’t change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in the fall, now is the time. A seldom discussed hazard is your dryer’s lint trap. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, highly-combustible lint, which
YOUR
builds up in your dryer’s trap, accounts for more than 15,000 building fires per year. Make sure those are cleaned out!
3. Deep Clean and Declutter. Making a resolution to love where you live can make your year more enjoyable, a good way to do that is to give it a serious cleaning. Of course, you can simply hire a house cleaner, but if you want to save money, just pick a room and get going. From washing bedding and windows to deepcleaning appliances, you’ll love the results of freshly-scrubbed spaces. 4. Plan for the Coming Years. The new year is a great time to take stock of what needs to be fixed or improved. Landscaping upgrade? New roofing or patio? How about painting or replacing furniture? You don’t have to entirely renovate or remodel to enjoy home improvements. Start with these four resolutions, and by year end, your home will be a better place to live. There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.” There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown. • The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. • Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times. • Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession. • When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current and future sales. An increase in “share of voice”
typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.” An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits. Another strategy used by marketers is using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides. Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share. Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.” -----------------------------We at Estrella Publishing are open for business and here working overtime to support our clients and potential future clients with their marketing strategy. Community Garden When the current events do nothing but give you a headache, there is a seed of hope growing in our own neighborhood. The Estrella Realtor Networking group, a group of 35 local realtors, has been brainstorming on ideas to give back to our community. In the past, the Movie Night in the park was a fan favorite, but with today’s state of affairs, it was time to try something new. The Realtor group wanted to do something year-round for our neighborhood when an old idea blossomed, bringing back the proposal of a Community Garden. This grassroots idea was meant for likeminded people to gather and grow their new seeds of hope, and share their knowledge and help others do the same. In a time of uncertainty this would be a welcomed retreat for so many of our neighbors. After hours of research, a 28 page proposal was submitted for the HOAs review. Research included other community gardens, Newland developer, restaurant owner, social media platform conversations, master gardeners, and companies interested in helping develop this exciting vision. As of December 1st the HOA has given their blessing for the Estrella Realtor Networking Group to submit plans to the design review committee for approval to develop on a scenic lot located at Presidio. This 55 x 55 graded lot has access to parking, electrical and water, all things that were not available before
when this idea was brought up by a group of residents in years past. The concept is to have 16 individual raised beds, each with their own spicket to control watering for their own individual needs; with this the self-sustained garden will offer an exciting new way to learn about establishing gardens in the Sonoran desert. Currently the goal is for the Estrella Realtor Networking along with Pioneer Title & Allyson Knappenberger with DK Home Mortgage to raise $6,000 to support the infrastructure along with material donations from Newland, Estrella HOA, ASM Masonry, Diamondback Concrete and Agave Landscape. We hope to break ground in February 2021 for March planting. The mission statement created for this project is, “Volunteers committed to developing a selfsustainable community garden in Estrella. We do this by bringing together diverse groups of people, with a focus on youth development. Together we strive to develop and beautify the site and empower community members of all ages and abilities. If you are interested in getting your own garden plot, or joining the Estrella Garden committee please go on Facebook Estrella Community Garden Volunteer Page or reach out to one of the helping hands in the Estrella Realtor Networking Group at www.localestrellarealtors. com

Chronic Conditions? While some people with a COVID-19 infection may experience relatively mild symptoms, the disease is of greater concern for the 56% of Americans who may have at least one risk factor linked to an increased chance of complications.
Two increasingly common risk factors for COVID-19 are obesity and type 2 diabetes, which in some cases may be improved or even reversed with appropriate lifestyle modifications. As the COVID-19 situation evolves, it is important to recognize that daily decisions related to diet and activity may make a difference in the severity of infection. Research shows people with existing diabetes whose blood sugar is well controlled may require fewer medical interventions and are more likely to recover from COVID-19. Here are tips to consider related to obesity and type 2 diabetes amid the COVID-19 pandemic: Monitor your body mass. While body mass index (BMI) has potential shortcomings this calculation of height compared to weight may provide a helpful measure to monitor. In fact, people with
even moderately elevated BMI levels may have an increased risk of developing complications related to diabetes. Use interval eating. Also called intermittent fasting or time-restricted eating, this approach alternates periods of fasting and non-fasting during the day or across the week. People interested in this approach to eating should discuss it with their health care provider, as medication regimens may need to be adjusted. After-meal walks. People seeking to better control their blood sugar levels and weight should also consider short walks after eating meals or snacks. Whenever possible, make time for a 15-minute walk after each meal to help reduce the risk of blood sugar spikes. By considering these tips, these challenging times may serve as a catalyst for people to help improve their health and reduce the possible risk of complications from COVID-19.
