The holidays can be a challenging time, family get togethers are wonderful but they also bring tension. All those personalities in one place can sometimes be more than one room can hold.

The uncle who thinks he is funny, the cousin who boasts about everything, the sister you spend your life competing with, these are some of the characters that pop up in most people’s lives.

It is so easy in life to see the worst in people, to lean towards the negative in a situation but this month I challenge you to find the glimmer.

The opposite of a trigger. Those moments when happiness can shine through the gloom and spark joy not fear.

Coined by Deb Dana, a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in complex trauma, in her 2018 book “The Polyvagal Theory in Therapy,” “glimmers” refer to small moments when our biology is in a place of connection or regulation, which cues our nervous system to feel safe or calm.

Perhaps it is time for you to be the bigger person and let that animosity go - you will eventually feel better for it and at the very least you will have ‘won’ the best sister award for the night.

Hold your head up at that family gathering, strong in the knowledge that you are the best version of yourself. That you may not be perfect, but you are a person worthy of love and understanding. On Our Cover

Our cover model this month is Louise Privette, local resident, dancer and author. She was approached by her dance instructor a few years ago and asked if she would pen his biography. Armed with tons of research, she proceeded to interview Tristan Peigne over the next seven years, while they travelled to dance competitions, and before her own lessons at his studio. The result of all that work is a look behind the scenes of a live well lived.

Louise takes on the journey with Peigne as he establishes himself in the dance world, opening his own studio, only to be thwarted by first a flood, then Covid shutdowns. Rallying, and with a new sense of purpose, he has taken these setbacks and re-established his brand in Buckeye. The humanitarian in him also found time to establish a non-profit organization giving Veterans access to dance, allowing movement and achievement to soothe mental wounds which he segued into online classes during the pandemic.

If you have watched TV shows such as Dancing with the Stars it may seem that anyone can become a proficient dancer after a few weeks of intensive training. Reading this book will open your eyes to the depth of commitment and talent needed to achieve the level of success Peigne has attained.

The Bug Guy

The December holidays are a time for joy, festivities, and quality time with loved ones.

However, as we deck the halls and roast chestnuts on an open fire, uninvited guests may be scheming to crash our holiday parties – pests!

Fear not, for I bring you a hilarious guide to keeping those pesky pests away during the most wonderful time of the year.

First and foremost, let’s talk about the notorious Christmas tree invaders. These sneaky critters love to hitch a ride on your evergreen and unleash chaos in your living room. To combat this, we recommend performing a good oldfashioned Christmas tree shake-down. Vigorously shake that tree and watch as any creepy crawlers make a grand exit. Just make sure your pets are not startled in the process – the last thing you want is your furry friend playing fetch with a spider!

While you’re busy putting up decorations, don’t forget to be vigilant against unwanted creepy crawlies that may take up residence in them. Check every nook and cranny for signs of pest infiltration. Imagine hanging mistletoe and finding yourself face-to-face with a spider instead of your significant other! Talk about an unexpected twist in your holiday romance.

Green Thumb Mary, Mary quite contrary how does your garden grow? We may all recall the nursery rhyme from our childhood but never has it been more true to life than in our very own community garden!

Our gardeners from across the country are learning that growing vegetables and herbs in the desert is not only possible…but thriving!

Many gardeners have been harvesting already as of the writing of this article.

We are also sharing our knowledge with the community at large every month at our Second Saturday in the Garden events!

This past Veterans Day, we collected damaged American Flags for proper disposal, learned about composting from a local company called Recycle City, they offer a pickup service and use our food scraps in their local farm and feed and completed our annual Lady Bug release, sharing 3,000 lady bugs into the garden.

We have our next “Second Saturday at the Garden” event on December 9th from 9:0010:00, stop by Santa’s Secret Garden for a picture with Santa, some hot chocolate and treats! Kathi (with an i) “Mom”, Tammy shouted into the phone, “don’t put up with that. There are plenty of nice guys out there who would love to date you!” That’s what I heard Tammy, our receptionist yell into the phone as Rick Jones and I were awaiting our next appointments. I waved at her and said, “Yeah, and I’m one of them!” Rick said “So am I!”. Tammy then tells her Mom, “There are two guys here who would be perfect” (note lack of exclamation mark here). So I waved my arms and said, “Transfer that call back to me,” and I raced back to my tiny cubicle.

And that’s how it began 29 plus years ago. It was early February. I picked up my phone and said “This is Mike.” Kathi told me her name, and we talked for a few minutes. Being the super salesman I picture myself to be, I suggested we meet for lunch sometime, so we met near her office at a Chinese food restaurant. She surveyed me, and I, her. She was drop dead gorgeous!

I discovered she was a single Mom, divorced just a couple years (I for one) with four kids at home.

I asked a closing question, “Would you like to go out Saturday, maybe dinner or something?” She

said something about playing darts after and I said “sure, then it’s a date.”

That next week, I was full of butterflies, I pried as much information out of Tammy as I could, was able to determine Kathi was interested. But she had been dating a fellow for about a year, who also had kids, and the relationship was rather erratic.

Our first date was at a fancy steak house at the Point. She was playful, and surprised me when she tried to flick a pea from across the table at me - and missed and hit a diner sitting at the next table. I believe my mouth was agape, and she feigned embarrassment. I was going to skip desert, but, as time would tell, that is always her favorite part of the meal! We did go out to a hole-in-the-wall bar, drank a couple beers, and played darts. I won, but she was competitive and by the evening’s end, she was insisting I had surely cheated!

It was the beginning of ten months of hiking, trips to softball tournaments, dinners. It was after the third date we kissed for the first time, and we saved the rest until the I do’s. We were married December 3rd, honeymooned in Tahiti, and we bought a home for all of us. Happy anniversary, Kathi!

We can end up with a lot of odds and ends of Bread, Croissants, Bagels + Cheese at Café Bebida. This inspired a Savory Bread Pudding recipe that is a perfect side dish for the holidays.

The better the bread + cheese you use, the better this recipe comes out. Just save your bread ends or loaves that have gone stale in the freezer until you have enough for a batch. Feel free to improvise using whatever herbs you may have on hand. You can also add pieces of ham, cooked bacon, or sausage if you like.

Savory Bread Pudding Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees 1 tbs Butter 1 medium Onion (red, yellow or white), diced ½ tsp dried Oregano ½ tsp dried Thyme 1 tbs Olive Oil 8 ounces of Brown Mushrooms, wiped clean and sliced Salt + Pepper ¼ tsp Paprika 1/8 tsp Cayenne Pepper 2 Cups Whole Milk (you can substitute Low or Fat Fee but Whole tastes better) 3 Large Eggs, beaten 2 tbs sliced Green Onion.

3-4 cups assorted Bread, cut into 1-2 inch cubes 2 cups mixed shredded cheese such as Provolone, Cheddar, Swiss, Gouda, Jack,

Parmesan, or whatever you have on hand. The more the merrier.

Sautee onions in butter over medium-high heat.

Add herbs and cook until onion is soft. Add the olive oil to the pan, turn up the heat and add mushrooms, cook stirring frequently about 3 minutes. Add ½ teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon pepper, Paprika and Cayenne and remove from heat.

Beat eggs thoroughly then add milk, ½ teaspoon salt and add green onions.

Butter rectangle baking dish and arrange half the bread on the bottom. Top with the mushroom mix, and then half the cheese, then remainder of bread and top with the rest of the cheese.

Pour milk mixture over the top. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove cover and continue baking about another 10-15 minutes until custard is set. Don’t worry if some of the bread pieces start getting brown and crusty, it’s a good thing! Remove from oven and let sit about 5 minutes before serving.
