From Me To You...

‘Tis the season. Just not the season you are thinking of. Sure the holidays are upon us, but the season I am talking about is the “let’s tighten our belts and make do” season.

I am sure you are well aware of the supply chain restrictions. Couple that with the massive number of people who have left their jobs and you see a gap in the market that is unprecedented.

That is a word that has been used far too much lately but it is, again, true. Have you noticed the emptying shelves at your local supermarket? The items ‘out of stock’ when you try to order them online? This is all due to that pesky supply chain problem.

I watched a news segment the other day and I was shocked to find that, on top of all the containers sitting at ports waiting to be unloaded and trucked to their destinations, there is another problem. The ports are limiting which color of container can be returned empty to the yard.

So, say you are a truck driver with an empty green container and you wait 8 hours or more in line to return your ‘empty’ and pick up a ‘full’ in exchange. You get to the front of the line and a supervisor says,”Sorry mate, we are only taking red containers today. Back of the line!”

public transportation, I knew that trains were the way to go. So I booked an around-the-country train ticket on Amtrak. I packed a backpack and set out with a friend to see the sights. We started in New York and headed south for the first leg of our trip.

Things were ticking along smoothly as we sat sandwiched between commuters and children on school field trips. Then we got south of D.C. and things ground to a halt. Well not completely, but they may as well have. The trains outside of metro areas travel at approximately 30 miles an hour. And the dinging. Oh my goodness! That noise is one I still hear in my nightmares. Ding, ding, ding! It went on for hours.

Despite the noise and the lack of speed I managed to see a good amount of the country, in fact there are only 9 states I have yet to visit.

Now if the price of gas ever goes back down, then I may go on a road trip and finally see those last few states.

It seems to me that the problem goes further than infrastructure, at this point it is organization that is needed. Either that or someone needs a good kick in the pants. You decide.

So that is the first problem but let’s add another one to the pile. Gas prices are rising, and that is never a good thing. Especially in a state where we have to drive for everything. Growing up I was used to a robust train and bus network. If you didn’t drive and needed to get around, there was a bus or train that could get you where you had to go.

How did you come up with the idea for Soda Bomb?

Our family has always been soda and treat lovers. Soda shops have been around for a long time, but most in Arizona are in the East Valley. Being West Valley natives, we wanted to bring that same goodness to the West Valley. We wanted to set ourselves apart from many of the other soda shops so we decided to include homemade half pound cookies, milkshakes, ice cream (all the way from BYU in Utah), and macarons - a local favorite.

What prompted you to branch out when you already had a successful business?

As a family of entrepreneurs, we are always

looking for something new and exciting. We enjoy working with and teaching the youth in the area, and are able to offer employment opportunities for them that they can enjoy and learn good work ethic.

What do you sell?

We sell made from scratch cookies, macarons, sodas, infused waters, milkshakes, and freeze-dried candy. We will also sell fresh baked pies around the holidays.

Where are you located?

We currently have one location in Goodyear at 633 S Estrella Parkway, Suite 15 and two other locations are under construction. One in Avondale, AZ and one in the Las Vegas, NV area.

Money Matters During your working years, you’ve probably met the costs of living through your salary. But once you retire, where will the money come from? Is there a way to give yourself a “paycheck” for retirement? There is indeed – but you’ll have to do a good job of managing your available income sources. Here are some moves that can help:

Accept dividends and interest payments. Instead of automatically reinvesting all your dividends and interest payments you might want to begin receiving these payments as part of your income.

Keep in mind, though, that companies can lower or discontinue dividends at any time.

Choose an appropriate withdrawal rate. Once you’re retired, you’ll likely need to begin withdrawing from your investment accounts.

But you’ll need to avoid taking out too much early in your retirement – you don’t want to risk outliving your portfolio. For many people in their mid-60s, a 4% annual withdrawal rate is a good starting point, but everyone’s situation is different, and your ideal rate will depend on several factors: your age, the size of your portfolio, other sources of income, and so on.

Maximize your Social Security. You have significant control over the amounts you’ll receive from Social Security. You can begin taking these payments at age 62, but they will be much larger if you wait until your full retirement age, which will likely be between 66 and 67. (You will receive the maximum amount if you wait until you reach 70.) So, if you think you have enough income from other sources, you might decide to delay taking Social Security – but if you need the money, you may not be able to wait.

Consider an annuity. You might want to consider purchasing an annuity that provides lifetime payments. Some annuities are even indexed for inflation, meaning payments will increase or decrease each year, keeping pace with the Consumer Price Index. Annuities are not suitable for everyone, though, so, before investing in one, you should consult with a financial professional who is familiar with your situation.* Finally, don’t rule out the possibility of earned income. Just because you’ve retired from your full-time job doesn’t mean you can’t work in some capacity, perhaps by doing some part-time work or consulting or even opening your own small business.

Look at all these ideas when thinking about putting together an income plan for your retirement. You may find that your diligence will pay off.

Winter in the West Valley is the best place to be!

I don’t know about you, but I am ready for the comfortable days and cool nights. It’s a perfect time to get together and enjoy quality time with friends and family. The holiday season is around the corner and another opportunity to reconnect with old friends you haven’t seen in a while, maybe someone that lives out of state or even in your neighborhood.

We have seen significant growth in the West Valley in the last couple of years, even with Covid concerns. As our community continues to grow, so does construction which displaces wildlife in the area. This means that the potential interactions with bugs and wildlife also increase in those active construction zones. You know those four, six, or eight legged creepy crawly critters we all love to hate.

2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 1-2 tablespoons almond milk

Peppermint Bark Mini Cupcakes

For a party, family get-together or weekday dessert, enjoy the iconic holiday flavor combo chocolate and peppermint.

Ingredients 1/3 cup almond flour 2 tablespoons coconut flour 1 scoop Quest Chocolate Milkshake Protein Powder 2 tablespoons zero calorie sweetener 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 teaspoon baking powder Pinch salt 1 Peppermint Bark Quest Bar, chopped 1/2 cup almond milk 1 egg 1 egg white 1 tablespoon melted butter Frosting 1 cup low fat ricotta cheese 2 tablespoons powdered zero calorie sweetener 1 scoop chocolate milkshake protein powder

Instructions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and prepare two cupcake tins with 14 mini liners.

In bowl, stir together almond flour, coconut flour, protein powder, sweetener, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt, then set aside.

In microwave safe bowl, add chopped bar and almond milk and cook on high for 1 minute. Stir until smooth.

Let cool 5 minutes before whisking in eggs and melted butter.

Add dry ingredients to wet and stir until batter forms.

Distribute batter between liners and bake cupcakes 12-14 minutes. Let cool.

For frosting, use handheld mixer to beat ricotta, powdered sweetener, protein and cocoa powder until smooth.

Add almond milk 1 tablespoon at a time for smoother consistency.

Transfer frosting to piping bag and add dollop of frosting onto each cupcake and smooth with knife. Top with sprinkles if desired. Makes 14 mini cupcakes.

Buyer Beware Today’s online marketplaces - where anyone can buy or sell new items - are numerous, offering a wide variety of products. But buyers should be aware there are risks involved when buying from these types of marketplaces including ending up with stolen or counterfeit merchandise, receiving an item that’s different from what you ordered, or never receiving it at all.

Unscrupulous sellers can show up on any of the many legitimate marketplaces. Because these sellers often hide behind fake accounts with fake names, and they aren’t required to provide or verify their contact information, it’s extremely difficult for law enforcement to catch them.

Being aware of potential red flags can help you avoid problems. For example, here are signs that may mean you could be buying a stolen or counterfeit item: * It seems too good to be true - such as a new, brand-name item on sale for a drastically lower price. * The product is described as “brand new,” “new in box” or “new with tags.” * Large quantities of the same item/ brand are available at the same time. * The seller indicates they can “get other products upon request.” * There are signs of box tampering or 14 Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine
