From Me To You... Are you a puzzler? I have recently transformed into a committed (easy) crossword fanatic. It all started with my mother who could beat you in scrabble with words that you could not fathom as being real, and yet, every time, we would discover that they were. She passed along her love of words to me and apart from an occasional game of Banangrams and our daily Wordle with the kids that was it as far as family puzzles go. On a recent trip to visit my stepmother, things ramped up in a surprising way. My adult daughters came along and we found ourselves bonding over the morning quick crossword. (In a real paper that my Dad bought every morning!) I have always thought of crosswords as a solitary experience but they are so much more fun when you involve the whole room. Conversations are begun, discussions of the merits of one word over another ensue, and the camaraderie that grows as we groan over a choice of solution is lovely.

takes less than 10 minutes and, the key for our engagement, a timer. You can share not only the win but the time it takes you to get there.

Now my mornings begin with a cup of coffee and the mini crossword, followed by Wordle and then I wait to see who posts the fastest time. The beauty of this is not only connection with my busy-with-their-own-lives kids, but I am exercising my brain at the same time. I know it is a muscle that needs to stretch as much as the rest of me and I am aware of ‘the use it or lose it’ future ahead of all of us. I highly recommend trying it for yourself and let’s be honest, if I can retain brain cells along with family bonding time, who’s to complain?

Catherine Uretsky Editor, Up The Hill magazine info@estrellapublishing.com 623-398-5541

I thought that once the visit was over, so would the heady days of family puzzle time, but I woke up a few mornings ago to a text from one of the kids. She had discovered the mini puzzle app from the NY Times and included were Wordle and Mini crosswords. These things are perfect for the micro attention span of today’s Millennials (and let’s face it, most adults). A crossword that

On Our Cover Are you looking for a relaxing group to join where you can sip whiskey and smoke a cigar while raising money for local causes? Well the Estrella Whiskey and Cigar Society is the place for you!

Our cover models are Dustin Keeney, Joe Baer and Keith Johnson. Joe started the group after retiring to Estrella from Minnesota 4 years ago, then Dustin posted an inquiry on Facebook looking for people who wanted to get together for cigars and whiskey. The group was formed. The aim of the group is camaraderie, learning about whiskey and cigars, and local philanthropy. Membership is currently at approximately 170 and is open to both men and women. When attending the meetings you can smoke but not drink and conversely you can drink and not smoke - there is no peer pressure involved. As they told me, “Come to a meeting for the camaraderie and get an education on whiskey and cigars.”

The group hosts monthly get-togethers which alternate between the golf club here in Estrella and members’ homes. When at the golf club attendees bring cigars to smoke and share, but alcohol must be purchased on site. When at a private home everyone can bring cigars and whiskey, sharing and education are both encouraged. So far the Estrella Whiskey and Cigar Society has raised the following amounts: $1,000.00 for the EFHS Wrestling Program $750.00 given to Estrella Mountain Elementary for Art Supplies $1,000.00 to the EFHS Culinary Program All money was raised by raffles for prizes that were donated. If you are interested in joining the club, or would like to make a donation to their fundraisers they can be found on Facebook by searching ‘Estrella Cigar & Whiskey Society’.

Money Matters If you’re a long-term investor, your portfolio may stay fairly stable over time. However, that doesn’t mean you will never sell any investments. But when should you sell — and why? Here are some scenarios to consider: • If an investment has consistently underperformed – For one reason or another, some investments may not live up to your expectations. Rather than holding these investments in the hope that they will eventually show consistently positive returns, you might be better off selling them and using the proceeds to buy other investments that could help you make progress toward your goals. Keep in mind, though, that short-term price swings are inevitable for virtually all investments, so you may not want to sell an investment after just a few price drops, as it may still have strong fundamentals and good prospects. • If the investment itself has changed – The nature of some investments, such as stocks, can change over time. Stocks represent companies, and companies can evolve and adapt — or not. So, you may own shares in a company whose

management has changed or whose products are less competitive than they once were. If this company no longer seems like a sound investment, you may consider selling your shares and moving on. • If an investment is “redundant” – Over time, you may have added investments that are similar to others you already own. If you do have too many investments that are alike, you risk not having a fully diversified portfolio, and while diversification can’t always protect against all losses or guarantee profits, it can help reduce the impact of market volatility on your holdings. Consequently, you might want to sell an investment that may now be “redundant” to your portfolio and replace it with another one that could boost your diversification efforts. • If your own needs have changed – You originally created your investment mix to help you reach certain goals, such as a comfortable retirement. As you near retirement, you may want to lower your risk level. Consequently, you could decide to sell some of your growthoriented investments and move the money into income-producing ones. Generally speaking, you may not want to do a lot of selling (or buying) of investments once you’ve built a portfolio that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. But if you are going to sell investments, make sure you do so for the right reasons. Submitted by Wayne Polk, AAMS, Financial Advisor, of Edward Jones

Ask Dr Jen

“When I was a kid, my parents were neglectful and even abusive, at times. When I had kids, I was worried about how they’d be with them and watched them like hawks when they interacted with our kids. Thankfully, they proved to be much better grandparents than parents. I’m really grateful, but I still carry some resentment for my parents so it’s kind of tough to watch in a way. More than anything, I’d really like to understand it. How does this happen?” ~ KT There are many reasons people make better grandparents than parents. You could start by expressing your gratitude to your parents and tactfully asking what’s changed for them, what’s behind their improved behavior. If you don’t want to do that or they don’t have an answer for you when you do, here are a few possibilities: 1. They learned a few things from raising their own kids. Hindsight being what it is, they’re different now. 2. They’ve mellowed out over the years. Whatever issues they allowed to contribute to their behavior (or used as excuses for it) have shifted, or maybe they did some therapy or selfhelp, and they’re psychologically different now. 3. They’ve realized the error of their ways, so they’re working to do things differently and not make the same mistakes. 4. They’ve loosened up because they no longer

RICHARD TAX SERVICES LLC

have the stress of marriage + kids + work + errands + kids in extracurricular activities + household maintenance, etc. They’re in a much more chill space mentally and emotionally now. 5. They’re afraid of your response should they act up, so they’re minding their Ps and Qs. 6. They’re in a position of less responsibility and less pressure when it comes to kids that aren’t theirs, which means they can just focus on having fun with them. Regardless of the reason, try to focus on the blessing of their improved parenting behavior. To release yourself from any remaining emotional pain, try to forgive them also. The Bug Guy Ah, November in the Phoenix Valley, where the temperature finally dips below scorching and the desert breeze starts to sing sweet tunes. But as we swap our tank tops for cozy sweaters, the bugs of the valley have a different plan – infiltrate our homes and parties like uninvited guests. Fear not, brave residents, for I bring you a humorous guide to battling bugs and dodging scorpions during this wild November ride. First up on our guest list is the infamous cockroach. These resilient creatures see your cozy home as a five-star resort, with water, shelter, and a buffet of crumbs. But worry not, for you possess a mighty weapon - your shoe! Engage in a high-stakes game of cockroach whack-a-mole, and watch as these crafty critters scurry for dear life. Let the best roach win!

Now let’s talk about those eight-legged terrors – scorpions. They lurk in the shadows, ready to give you an unexpected jolt of adrenaline. Toss away your fear and channel your inner ninja. Become the Scorpion Sensei, armed with a mighty flip-flop katana, ready to strike at a moment’s notice. Just remember to practice your battle cries, so the scorpions know who’s boss. When it comes to ants, they are like tiny marauders, invading your kitchen and stealing your precious snacks. Wage war on these miniature thieves by becoming an ant whisperer. Speak to them in their tiny ant language and negotiate peace treaties. Offer them a carrot or two as a truce, and maybe they’ll find another picnic to crash in their ant quest for adventure. But what about those sneaky mosquitoes? These buzzing bloodsuckers thrive in November’s pleasant temperatures and make BBQs a battlefield. Impress your guests by showcasing your mosquito dodging skills. Master the art of the mosquito dance. Move with grace, agility, and above all, swat with precision. Your guests will be in awe as you simultaneously defend your body and bust some killer dance moves. Finally, an honorary mention goes to the audacious pack rats. These little hoarders love turning your attic into a five-star rat hotel. But fear not, ambitious Valley dwellers. Create a diversion by hosting a rat talent show. Give them a round of applause, then swiftly relocate them to a more suitable environment – preferably outside of your living quarters. So, dear Phoenix Valley residents, laugh in the face of these pests and embrace the battle with open arms and maybe a can of bug spray. And who knows, maybe in the process, you’ll discover hidden talents and create a new form of entertaining bug-themed art. Happy pest control adventures and cheers to a critter-free November in the Valley! Submitted by Larry Cash, Estrella Mountain Pest Control, Estrella resident

Home Sweet Home Thanksgiving is a cherished American tradition, a day for gathering with loved ones and counting our blessings. As we celebrate this special occasion, the phrase “home sweet home” takes on a profound significance. It symbolizes the comfort, love, and warmth we find within the walls of our homes during this season of gratitude. Our homes are more than just structures; they are the spaces where we create cherished memories. They provide a refuge from the world, a place where we can relax, be ourselves, and connect with those we hold dear.

Thanksgiving is a time for decorating our homes with the colors and symbols of the season. From cornucopias overflowing with autumn’s bounty to pumpkins and gourds adorning our tables, these decorations remind us of the harvest’s abundance. Decorating deepens our appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us. The aromas of Thanksgiving are unforgettable. The scent of a roasting turkey, freshly baked pies, and savory stuffing evokes anticipation and gratitude. Preparing this feast is an act of love, and the fragrant result is a testament to the

Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

importance of our homes in our celebrations. Around the dining table, family and friends gather to share a bountiful meal. It’s not just about the food; it’s about the conversations, laughter, and strengthened bonds. After indulging in the feast, many find a cozy spot for a post-meal nap, whether it’s on the couch, in a favorite armchair, or under the open sky. These moments of rest allow us to digest our food, recharge our energy, and continue to savor the company of loved ones. Thanksgiving is a time for reflection. Our homes are where we gather to express our thankfulness for good health, loving relationships, and life’s myriad blessings. They are where we pause to recognize the comfort and security we are fortunate to have. As we celebrate Thanksgiving, let us remember that “home sweet home” embodies the essence of the holiday. Our homes provide the setting for the memories, love, and gratitude that define this day. May your home be filled with warmth, laughter, and the spirit of thanksgiving this season. By Allyson Knappenberger, Garden Committee Chair

We are so happy for our second season at the Estrella Community Garden and want to bring a sense of “community” to the Community Garden! We, the Garden Committee, have been hard at work planning our “Second Saturday at the Garden” events. Our first event (September 14 th ) was a plant share as we kicked off our new planting season. Next up, and by popular demand, we have Recycle City coming out to do a compost presentation on November 11 th from 9am-10am. Recycle City provides “in home compost collection” that is picked up and used at local farms! In recognition of Veteran’s Day, we will also be collecting damaged American Flags to be destroyed properly and of course…our Annual Ladybug release!

We will have something for everyone. “Second Saturday at the Garden” events will be from 9am-10am every second Saturday through the end of our planting season (September 1-June 30th). Our gardeners are made up of a Local Girl Scout Troop, novices to gardening and transplants from other regions learning how to Grow in the Desert! There are two plots available for this season, so we encourage you to apply! The summer was hot, but as our weather cools down, we have produce growing in our 9B zone! Our Estrella Community Garden is in the Southeast corner of the Presidio Residents Club parking lot. Applications are available at Starpoint (HOA office) or online at Life in Estrella. Mark your calendars and join us for our “Second Saturdays at the Garden”!

Can’t wait to enjoy the great weather outside? Let us help you get those bugs under control.

Caring For Those We Love Survival Tips for Caring for Those We Love A seminar on Caregiving - an Act of Love – How to survive it. On October 4, 2023, The Luke Chapter Military Officers Association of America’s Surviving Spouse Group hosted all members of the Luke Chapter (From Estrella, thru Goodyear, to Surprise and Sun City West) with a presentation of Survival Tips for Caring for Those We Love and Support Resources for the Caregiver. The meeting was held in a private room at the State 48 Brewery on Bell Rd, Surprise. Military spouses are so used to moving, based on new orders, and/or just helping each other adjust through the course of our husband’s career. We wanted to learn resources to help each other, when we are outside of the military world, but facing the same loss of spouses as other families. So, we formed a group of military officers’ surviving spouses to help people when we faced the loss of our loved one. Our group also wanted to learn how to learn about resources available to help when health issues cause one of the family to provide spousal care. Firstly, we decided that a more acceptable name for caregiver was ‘Personal Assistant’. We shared how Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

to identify the need for assistance, how and when to obtain more support, how to find resources (some are free to veterans) to support the caregiver, and how to make those critical decisions. Our speakers were Pat Staflin-caregiver; Rosemary Eaton-caregiver; and Renee RizzoCypress Home Care Solution Professional, who works with Bob Roth. Bob sits on the State Council on Aging. All speakers have 4+ years of proving these services. A caregiver support handbook was distributed with details and phone numbers on accessing current aid that the caregiver may need, from a caring professional coaching voice on the phone to onsite help. If you are a military officer’s surviving spouse, and want to help make a difference, please contact us. Our doors are open. *The Luke Chapter MOAA (Ben.Hayes@ lukemoaa.org) *Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) msc@moaa.org

Yum Yum

Here is an easy recipe with my twist on Fish Veracruz Style, using one of my favorite ingredients, Coconut Milk. This is also great using Shrimp. Coconut Fish Preheat Oven to 325 Lightly oil rectangular, non-metal, baking dish Ingredients: • 6 meaty white Fish Fillets such as Cod, Snapper, Grouper (5-6 oz each) • 15 oz can of Petite Diced Tomatoes – lightly drained • 15 oz can of Coconut Milk – stir if separated (lite coconut milk works, but not as yummy) ½ of 7 oz can Pickled Jalapenos – thinly sliced

(more if you like really spicy...) • 3 green onions - thinly sliced • 3 large cloves Garlic – minced (about 2 tbs) • 1/2 cup roughly chopped Cilantro – divided • 1 tsp salt – divided • 2 large Limes – divided • 6 cups cooked Rice for serving Directions Put fish fillets into oiled baking dish in one layer. Squeeze juice of one lime over them and sprinkle with 1/2 tsp salt. Let sit while you prepare other ingredients. Top fish with Tomatoes, Jalapenos, Green Onions, ¼ cup Cilantro, remaining tsp salt. Pour Coconut Milk overall, bake uncovered for 15-20 minutes until fish flakes easily with a fork. Do not overcook. Plate fish fillet over ½ cup rice. Stir all the ingredients in the baking dish until sauce comes together and then ladle over fish. Cut remaining lime into 6 wedges. Sprinkle with chopped Cilantro and a Lime wedge.
