From Me To You... November is the time of year when we lean into giving thanks. Our thoughts go to the passing of another year and what we have achieved or gained. At the very least you have to find an answer to the Thanksgiving table round of “Share one thing you are thankful for.”
At our table we have instilled a rule that you cannot claim, “Being here with everyone.” It is considered a lazy answer and goes against the spirit of the meal. The order of giving thanks is also one to ponder. You don’t want to go to late because all the obvious answers will be taken but sometimes waiting until a few people have gone can prompt an answer you would not have otherwise thought of. My answer this year is pandemic related - just not the one you are probably expecting. I am thankful for my alone time. Having been surrounded by my nearest and dearest for the last year and a half (sometimes in closer quarters than we have had since they were tiny), I have a new found appreciation for me-time.
The beauty of our surroundings can be lost to us as we run from errand to errand, trying to fit everything into the time we have. Do you still see the beauty in the desert? I know when we first came to Arizona it was stunning. A new and exciting vista everywhere we looked. When I try to describe it to people who have not seen it themselves I liken our landscape to a Wile E Coyote and Roadrunner cartoon. I do always have to mention that the Roadrunners themselves are disappointingly small and brown. Although I somehow still expect a 6 foot tall, brightly hued creature beeping at me as it races by. As I think about it perhaps I should be thankful this year that the actual Roadrunner is a diminutive creature that has no access to the Acme Co. and its selection of traps and explosives. What ever you are thankful for this year, we at Estrella Publishing wish you a Happy & Healthy Thanksgiving!

We all need that space to hear our own voice and make considered decisions without the clamor of everyone else’s opinion. Usually we get that time when kids go to school, partners go to work, or we commute. During the pandemic that all changed. Kids went to school at the kitchen table, partners carved out a workspace somewhere in the house and your commute was a short walk from your bedroom to your desk. My situation is slightly different as I have worked from home for over 10 years. But still. It was an adjustment when I added the layers of kids and the panic that seemed to hang in the air at all times. So I find my most satisfying alone time in the car. I love driving by myself, I can listen to music, or a podcast, or just watch the world go by in a bubble of silence.

Career Change At age 62, Sandy Weber became unemployed when her customer service job was eliminated during the COVID pandemic. A friend encouraged her to give substitute teaching a try. “I didn’t realize I could work in a classroom without a teaching background,” Weber said. “It was the best decision I’ve made in years.”
Those who have lost, have left or are thinking of leaving their job might want to consider a career in the classroom. Schools and daycares everywhere need new talent, as a record number of educators are among those who have left their jobs to care for their own children or choose early retirement. While this puts the education system under pressure, it presents an ideal opportunity for career changers wanting to make a difference in children’s lives. Launching a fulfilling education career is easier than you might think. There are many ways to begin, even without teaching credentials. Here are four opportunities that could lead to a lifetime career. 1. Substitute teachers Every school district needs hundreds of
substitute teachers during a normal school year. Post-pandemic, that number is even higher. Credentials for substitutes vary by state, so job seekers should check their state’s department of education or local school district website. 2. Paraeducators There is a strong demand for paraeducators across all grade levels. They often work with children who have special needs by providing support to students in and out of the classroom. 3. Tutors The ongoing need for learning recovery from the pandemic is creating a surge in demand for tutors. Tutoring is a great option for people with a variety of professional experiences and allows for flexibility with scheduling. 4. Early childhood educators Working with infants and young children is fun and creative. While early childhood teacher positions may require certifications, assistant, substitute or aide roles are accessible in these settings, offering steady part-time or full-time work with infants, toddlers and preschoolers. Many positions demand a high school diploma or G.E.D., but any work environment featuring children will also require a background check. Employers provide information about the vetting process or may arrange it for candidates.

Money Matters On Veterans Day, we honor the men and women who have served in our armed forces. If you’ve recently separated or retired from the military, or you will be leaving soon, you can be proud of the service you’ve provided to your country. But once you’re a veteran, away from the structure and imperatives of the military, you may need to take greater control over managing your finances and protecting your family. For starters, consider housing. When you were on active duty, you may have moved around frequently and found it more convenient to rent, but you may now want to purchase a house. Assuming you meet the eligibility requirements, you could apply for a VA loan, which typically does not require a down payment and is usually offered at a favorable interest rate. You’ll also want to save and invest for retirement.
While on active duty, you could invest in the Thrift Savings Plan, but when you separate from service, you can no longer contribute to it. Now, if you get a job in the civilian sector, you may have access to a 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan, and you might be able to roll your TSP balance into your new employer’s plan. If you become self-employed or open your own business, you may be able to choose from several retirement plans. But no matter what plan you have, try to contribute enough to meet your income needs in retirement, which could last two or three decades. Once you become a civilian, you may need to consider health and life insurance. Regarding health insurance, you should be able to get coverage through TRICARE and/or the VA, but you also may want to take advantage of employer-sponsored health coverage. As for life insurance, you’ll want to consider your options for your SGLI, such as converting it to either Veterans’ Group Life Insurance or a civilian policy. Your new employer may provide some form of insurance as an employee benefit, but it might not be sufficient for your needs. Entering a new phase in your life can be exciting and rewarding – and you’ll enjoy it even more when you get comfortable with your new financial arrangements. The Bug Guy
Since now is the time of year that mice and rats tend to move indoors in search of food, water and shelter, it’s important to be aware of the signs of a rodent infestation. The National Pest Management Association put together the following list to help determine if your home is indeed infested with rodents. What to Look For Droppings: Finding mice or rat droppings around the home is one of the most common signs of a rodent infestation. Measuring approximately 1/81/4” (3-6 mm) long, these pellets are often left behind in places where food is stored, such as kitchen cabinets or pantries. Homeowners may also find mouse droppings under sinks, inside chewed cardboard boxes, along baseboards and on top of wall beams. Mouse feces can carry harmful bacteria, transmit serious diseases such as salmonella and Hantavirus, and trigger allergies. Mice can produce more than 50 droppings a day, so prompt removal using protective gloves is key to keeping the family safe from the potential health threats posed by these critters.
Nests: Rodents prefer to nest in dark, secluded areas where there is little chance of disturbance. House mice, specifically, like to build their nests out of shredded paper products, cotton, packing materials, wall insulation and fabrics. If you see these materials scattered around the home, it might be time to call in a licensed pest professional to perform an inspection. Strange noises: Hearing strange noises, especially at night, can be a bit concerning. Chances are these sounds can be attributed to a family of rodents scurrying about, in the attics. Rodents are especially fond of attics because they provide dark, secluded spots to build nests. An actual rodent: Mice can breed rapidly, so if you spot one mouse in the house, it’s likely there are others playing hide and seek. In fact, a female house mouse can give birth to a half dozen babies every three weeks, up to 35 young per year. That’s a lot of mice! If you recognize any of these signs of a rodent infestation, don’t mess around! Contact a licensed pest control professional to inspect the home and recommend a proper course of treatment. Holiday Shopping No matter when or where you plan to do your holiday shopping, here are five shopping tips to help you stay on budget and find the perfect gift for everyone on your list so you can have the happiest holiday season.
1. Plan ahead Like most things in life, before you can truly get started you need a plan. Map out your who, what, when, where, and how. Take time to compile who you’re shopping for (don’t forget to include yourself!), what items you need on hand for hosting and attending holiday festivities, when you need to purchase things, where you can get everything on your list, and how you plan to afford it. Staying organized in the beginning will save you time and money in the end. 2. Shop early and save Take advantage of early holiday deals so you can stress less later in the season. There is no need to wait until Black Friday to start your holiday shopping and score the best deals, especially when retailers are offering deals already.

With Holiday Gift List, you can easily create and share one list of gift ideas for everyone in your household, conveniently organized by recipient at amazon.com/registries/ holiday. Home Sweet Home Who doesn’t want a fresh smelling home? Sweet cinnamon, pumpkin spice, pumpkin chai...the fall season suggests so many amazing seasonal scents. But when it comes to common household odors, there are countless culprits to look out for. Garbage disposals are a common cause of kitchen odors. With the disposal and faucet turned off, put six ice cubes in the chamber followed by 1 tablespoon of baking soda, three thin lemon slices, and 1 teaspoon of bleach. Top it all off with six more ice cubes. Turn the disposal on without running water until you hear the grinding stop. Then with the motor still running, flush with cold water for 30 seconds. Also be sure to wash the splash guard. That is the black rubber panel that sits on top of the drain hole. Many odors will come from food build-up on that piece.
YOUR
LOCAL
Regularly clean your refrigerator to keep odors at bay. Give it a deep clean every three months. Avoid pungent pet odors by cleaning litter and feeding areas daily. Wash animal bedding often to reduce stale smells. Scented candles and wax burners are easy ways to infuse a pleasant fragrance inside. Be mindful of where you place them, and careful not to mix scents. Always snuff the flame before leaving the room unattended. Houseplants add life and freshen the air naturally. Position your plants near an open window so their refreshing scents can breeze right through your home. Try some of these ideas to improve your home’s daily odors. Then grab your comfy blanket, clutch your favorite seasonal drink, and enjoy this fall season. Submitted by Tara Rutkowski, Realtor®, Realty One Group

Turkey with a Twist Ever wonder what to do with leftover Thanksgiving turkey? Give this recipe a try for a fun twist with traditional Thanksgiving foods. Turkey Cranberry Wreath Ingredients 2 packages (8 ounces each) refrigerated crescent rolls 1/2 cup mayonnaise 2 tablespoons honey Dijon mustard 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 2 cups (12 ounces) chopped cooked turkey 1/2 cup sliced celery 3 tablespoons snipped fresh parsley 1/2 cup sweetened dried cranberries 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded Swiss cheese 1/4 cup walnuts, coarsely chopped 1 egg white Directions Preheat oven to 375°F. Unroll crescent dough; separate into 16 triangles. With wide ends of
triangles toward the center, arrange 8 triangles in a circle on a circular stone or Pizza Stone. Corners of wide ends will touch and points will extend 1 inch beyond edge of baking stone. Arrange remaining 8 triangles in center, matching wide ends. Seal seams using a roller (Points will overlap in center; do not seal.) Place mayonnaise, mustard and black pepper in mixing bowl. Chop turkey. Slice celery. Snip parsley. Add turkey, celery, parsley and cranberries to mixing bowl. Grate cheese into batter bowl. Mix filling. Scoop filling over seams of dough, forming a circle. Coarsely chop walnuts; sprinkle over filling. Beginning in center, lift one dough triangle across filling mixture. Continue alternating with outer triangles, slightly overlapping to form wreath. Tuck last end under first. Add egg white to a small bowl. Lightly beat egg white; brush over dough. Bake 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Flu Season
flu shot, can be administered at the same time as the COVID-19 vaccine, if you are eligible. Please talk to your healthcare provider about what options are right for you.
Thanks to mask mandates, flu vaccines and social distancing, last year’s flu season saw historically low case numbers. The timing of flu is difficult to predict and can vary in different parts of the country and from season to season. Reduced population immunity due to lack of flu virus activity since March 2020 could result in an early and possibly severe flu season. The flu will come back this year, but it is unknown how bad cases will be, how immune systems will react and how COVID-19 and the flu could continue to interact. That’s why everyone needs to do their part and take the necessary steps to help protect themselves and those around them from the flu.
3) Who needs to get vaccinated? The simple answer? Every eligible American 6 months of age and older, with rare exception, should get their flu shot. And certain people are at an increased risk for flu-related complications, including adults 50 years of age and older, young children 6 months and older, pregnant women and people living with chronic health conditions. These complications can lead to increased hospitalizations and sometimes even death. While not everyone will develop severe symptoms from the flu, it is possible to transmit the flu to people who are at an increased risk of serious illness and flu-related complications.
1) The potential risks of the flu during COVID-19 During a global pandemic, it can be easy to forget about something like the seasonal flu. But the flu can have a severe impact, and that could worsen this year - as it’s possible to have both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time.
4) Where to get a flu shot Do you usually get your flu shot at your workplace? You’re not alone. Many businesses across the United States offer their employees the flu shot on site to help protect employees and help prevent the flu from spreading around the workplace. With some offices still 2) Can you get your flu vaccine with other operating remotely, many Americans are seeking vaccines, like COVID-19? information on where they can get their flu shot According to the CDC, vaccines, like the annual this year. Furry Friends
As the seasons change, this is the perfect time to protect your furry family members from fire and carbon monoxide risks. Follow these tips to keep your pet safer as temperatures start to drop.
1. Install “pets inside” window clings Attaching a decal to a window near doors and exits that indicates pets are inside is an easy way to let first responders know about your pets. In an emergency, first responders quickly assess occupants, and this helps to let rescuers know animals are inside. 2. Pet-proof your home Be familiar with common fire risks. Pets are naturally curious, and accidentally start nearly 1,000 home fires each year. Pet-related fires typically involve cooking appliances, wiring, fireplaces, heaters and candles. Avoid things like: * leaving leftover food on the stovetop (where pets can jump or turn on burners)
order.
* walking away from hot appliances like clothes irons (that easily tip over) * leaving lit candles in easy reach of probing paws Also keep smoke alarms and home fire extinguishers up-to-date and in working
3. Familiarize your pet with alarms Pets may become unsettled or anxious at the sound of an alarm, hiding under beds rather than exiting the home. Through positive training, it’s possible to teach many pets to stay calm and head for safety outside - this could help save their lives in case of an emergency. 4. Replace alarms every 7-10 years If you didn’t know alarms need replacing, don’t worry, you are not alone. In a recent Harris Poll survey, only 21% of respondents answered this correctly. Every smoke alarm must be replaced every 10 years, and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms every 7-10 years (depending on the model). If you aren’t sure when alarms were installed, use the manufacturing date on the back of the alarm. 5. Include pets in escape plans Assign one family member for each pet to make sure the entire family gets out. Stay aware of your pets’ typical hiding spots or where they nap in case you must evacuate quickly. Remember the 2’s for fire safety practice: * Practice 2 times annually * During 2 times of the day (morning and night) * Know 2 ways out of each room When you leave home, keep pets in areas near entrances where firefighters can easily find them. “Home safety planning is important for every member of the family, including your fourlegged family members,” said Sharon Cooksey, fire safety educator for Kidde. “With planning and the right home equipment, you can have peace of mind that you’re prepared for these emergencies.”

Cybersecurity If you are employed in the US, it’s more likely than not that you worked remotely this past year. Over time, we’ve perfected some aspects of remote and hybrid working - from comfortable chairs to Zoom happy hours. But there’s one thing that remains a major problem for most people: cybersecurity. Work-from-home arrangements have contributed to a 238% increase in global cyberattack volume during the pandemic.
You might be thinking, “Another lecture about compliance? Did my IT department pay you to write this?” But everyone has a stake in cybersecurity. * It impacts the employer. Businesses can lose more than money - their reputation, customers and even ability to stay open are at stake. In fact, 60% of small and midsized businesses that are hacked go out of business within six months. * It impacts the employee. Not only can hackers unlawfully access company data through employees, but personal data can also be compromised. * It impacts the client. Sometimes, the stakes
are incredibly high. Financial services companies, for instance, are entrusted with everything from employment information and income to Social Security numbers and retirement savings.
Here are four ways remote employees can protect themselves, their clients and the companies they work for: * Don’t mix business and personal devices: Using personal devices for work-related activities can easily put company data at risk if there is a breach. And that goes both ways: If the company is hacked, personal data may also be stolen. * Avoid public Wi-Fi: It’s great when you don’t need a password to connect to the internet at your local coffeeshop or airport, right? Hackers agree! * Get a virtual private network (VPN): These networks provide encrypted connections, ensuring that sensitive information is safely transmitted. * Use multi-factor authentication (MFA): When transmitting sensitive information over the internet, look for websites that ask you to verify your identity by receiving an email, text or call. Microsoft recently found that MFA prevents an astonishing 99.9% of all cyberattacks.

Garage Updates The desire to use the garage for new purposes is a top trend with homeowners nationwide. During the pandemic, 78% of homeowners across generations intend to make changes to their garage, according to the New American Home Study. Here are three tips for upgrading your garage and helping you design a space ideal for your needs while enhancing your home’s value: Add storage One of the primary things that separates a stereotypical garage from an enviable one is the organization. To start, get rid of junk, sort through necessities and transform the space to optimize organization. That means installing shelving and utilizing vertical space. Enclosed cabinets are ideal for limiting dust and keeping personal items out of sightlines from the road. Toolboxes and pegboards are ideal for keeping tools and hobby supplies conveniently on
hand. Creating a system with these elements may take time, but it’s worthwhile because the benefits are lasting.
Upgrade your garage door opener It’s time to ditch the loud, dated garage door opener for a stylish modern option with technology enhancements. Turn your garage into the envy of the neighborhood with a garage door opener that does more than just open and close your garage door. New openers come with built-in cameras, corner-to-corner LED lighting and work with an app so you can control, secure and monitor your garage door from anywhere. Make it a multifunctional space No matter what your interests, you can customize the space to fit your needs. A workbench is a must-have for many, with ample space to tinker and make. For gearheads, a car lift might be a worthy investment. For those focused on health, installing workout equipment makes sense. Proper task lighting is essential. Adding fans to cool and heating elements to warm helps make the garage a year-round retreat. Finally, upgrading flooring turns any garage into an eyecatching hot spot, so research options including epoxy coatings and garage floor tiles.
