From Me To You...

I am no longer allowed to throw balls in the house. Apparently my family is tired of dodging random missiles, picking up broken items and occasionally getting winged themselves. In fact as soon as I reach for a dog toy people duck for cover. I find it a little insulting to be honest.

My aim is not that bad, most of the damage is caused by rebounds and people walking into the line of fire. That is the line I am going with anyway.

It is amazing how many things I aim for in life and get a near miss, but it is not about the ones you miss. As I try to instill in my children, you learn more from failing than success. Sure success is more fun, but failing builds resilience, tenacity and drive. Learning that lesson young is preferable as it can be a hard lesson to learn as an adult.

One of our children is good at math. I mean he just gets it. When I hear a problem that starts with “A train leaves the station at 10am...” my head starts to throb and the world fades to black. He always knows the answer, always did.

Then he went to high school and hit a wall.

He stopped loving math and took a couple of years to come back to it. But he did, and pretty spectacularly at that, completing his college math before even starting his finance degree. He fell, figured out that if you fail at something you PARTY TRAY

learn, pick yourself up and do it differently next time - and he learned it when he was young.

That is a skill which makes him able to roll with the punches in his adult life.

Many people never learn that lesson, repeating their mistakes over and over again.

Relaxation Techniques Moms have to-do lists that are never done and can be hard to find a moment to stop and take a breath of fresh air. Learning a few easy meditation techniques will give you the ability to power through even the toughest days.

Unplug for just 5 minutes When you’re at home, set your phone on airplane mode, turn off the radio or TV, close the laptop - and just shut your eyes. Breathe deeply, in through the nose and out through the mouth, at least five times. Repeat a word or phrase in your mind like “Relax,” or “Breathe in, breathe out.” When you’re ready, slowly re-acclimate to your surroundings and gently get back to your busy day.

The one-minute breath For just a minute, commit to practicing this breathing technique. * Breathe in for 5 seconds. * Hold your breath for 5 seconds. * Release the breath for 5 seconds. * Hold for 5 seconds.

School Zone What We Did Over Summer Vacation

The summer of 2018, Cougar Community Volunteers (CCV) from Estrella Mountain Elementary School (EMES) began helping out at All Faith Services, the Goodyear Buckeye Food Bank. We had adults and students from 4th through 8th grades helping at the food bank in many different ways every Tuesday of summer vacation. Activities included packaging bread, rice, or beans for humans; packaging dog food, cat food or cat litter for pets; delivering food orders to clients; packaging liquid laundry soap; and sorting and stocking donated clothing.

When the 2018-19 school started, the students quit volunteering, but three adults from the group stayed on to volunteer every week for the entire year.

This past summer 15 students from the Estrella Mountain IB Junior High Academy and 15 adults (parents, family members, teachers and community members) volunteered at All Faith

Services. The favorite job among students was delivering food boxes to clients. A large box containing meat, fresh vegetables and fruit (and maybe dairy products or eggs, depending on availability) is placed on a cart, then baked goods are added. Quantities are based on the number of members in the client family. After a cart is loaded, the volunteers deliver its contents to a client family.

Volunteering at the food bank provides opportunities for all volunteers to try various jobs, and to work under different bosses with different management styles. This year, CCV volunteers worked for Kevin, the warehouse manager; Cliff, who manages shelf-stable products; Maria who manages fresh foods; Kathleen, the baked goods manager; Christine in dry goods; Chris in clothing; and Carla in the office.

All IB Junior High Academy members commit to 10 hours of community service each year, and National Junior Honor Society members commit to performing 10 hours of community service per trimester. Some of the food bank volunteers clocked as many as 29 volunteer hours this summer break.

Money Matters If you’re in the early stages of your working life – or even in the not-so-early ones – the chances are pretty good that you will change jobs at some point. When that happens, you’ll probably leave a few things behind – but will one of them be your 401(k)? Of course, you wouldn’t really forget about your 401(k) but you will have to do something with your account.

Essentially, you have four choices: • You can cash out your 401(k). It’s your money, but if you take it out before you reach 59 ½, you will owe federal income taxes, plus any applicable state and local taxes. Also, you will likely be charged a 10% penalty for early withdrawal.

• You can leave your 401(k) with your old employer. If your former employer permits it, you can leave your 401(k) intact, even

after you move to a different job.

This might be appealing to you if you like the investment choices in your account, but you won’t be able to make any new contributions. Plus, you won’t face any immediate tax consequences.

• You can move the money to your new employer’s 401(k). You can consolidate your old 401(k) with one offered by your new employer, if allowed. You won’t take a tax hit, and you might like your new plan’s investment options. And you may find it easier to manage your funds if they’re all held in one place.

• You can roll your 401(k) into an IRA. You don’t need the permission from any employer to move your old 401(k) to an IRA. You can make either a direct or indirect rollover. With a direct rollover, the administrator of your old 401(k) sends your money directly to the financial provider that holds your rollover IRA. No tax is withheld because you never actually take possession of the money.

With an indirect rollover, you’re technically withdrawing the money and moving it to the IRA provider yourself. (You’ve got 60 days to make this transfer.) You will face a withholding of 20% of your account’s assets, but you may be able to recover most of this amount when you file your tax return. Still, for the sake of ease of movement and avoidance of all tax issues, a direct rollover may be more advantageous.

Which of these options is right for you? There’s no one “right” answer for everyone. You’ll have to consider several factors, and you’ll certainly want to consult your tax professional before making any decision. But in any case, do whatever you can to preserve – and hopefully grow – your 401(k) assets. You’ll need these resources to help fund the retirement lifestyle you want and deserve.

Emojis vs Road Signs If you were to take a quiz to test your ability to identify common emojis and road signs, how do you think you’d fare? According to the results from a recent survey by Mercury Insurance - not so well. The meaning of the “yawning” emoji was correctly identified by 85% of the respondents, but only 31% of quiz-takers correctly identified the meaning of the “lane reduction” road sign. Fortunately for the more than 200 million licensed U.S. drivers, road signs are highly regulated and consistent, and are designed to help keep drivers safe and easily guide them to their destinations. The bad news, however, is that far more people are able to identify emojis than road signs. And what’s worse is that many times they’re looking at these cute little icons while they’re driving.

“Sure, emojis are a fun, modern-day form of shorthand, but there’s a time and place to use them, and behind the wheel of a car isn’t one of them,” said Kevin Quinn, vice president of claims and customer experience at Mercury Insurance.

some cases, but it certainly isn’t worth getting into a collision and risking someone’s life. Most collisions are avoidable if drivers focus on their main task of safely operating a vehicle.”

Distracted driving - anything that takes a driver’s attention away from the road, including texting and talking on a phone - accounted for 3,166 fatalities in 2017, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Texting while driving is extremely dangerous, as it takes your eyes off the road for five seconds on average - whether you’re reading or sending the message.

The results of the quiz also highlight the importance of knowing what each road sign means, so you and those around you are safe.

“These signs are instantly communicating to drivers what actions to take,” said Quinn. “It’s OK to only somewhat understand an emoji, but it’s imperative to know exactly what a road sign is telling you; otherwise it could lead to disastrous results on the road where no one can afford a misunderstanding.”

Purple Leash Project An estimated 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will experience some form of domestic abuse in their lifetime. Escaping abusive situations and starting over in a new and safe environment is an overwhelming experience for victims, especially when pets are involved. An added challenge is that very few (approximately 10 percent) domestic violence shelters in the U.S. currently accept and house pets. This leaves abuse victims with a difficult decision - flee to safety but leave their pet behind or stay with their abuser? Almost half of domestic violence victims choose to stay in an abusive situation out of fear of what might happen to their pet if they leave.

As those who live with pets can attest, pets do so much for their humans - they provide unconditional love and comfort, they demonstrate loyalty and devotion, and they teach people about care and compassion. Pets can also sense when their owners experience sadness or pain, and their physical presence can provide comfort and promote healing. In essence, pets and people are better together.

Online Scams Scammers are always cooking up creative new ways to separate people from their money. The sad reality is that it often works. Keep these things in mind when you see an enticing post or are randomly approached by someone about any form of money flipping or “get rich quick” schemes: 1. Trust your gut If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Ignore the testimonials with photos of big piles of cash and the flashy jewels they display with captions of their “success” - scammers may tell you that they work for a money transmitter and have “tricks” on how to double your money.

Cons claim they will keep a percentage of the profit as commission, but as soon as a victim sends the upfront investment money, they will unfriend or block you on social media, not answer texts or calls and disappear without a trace.

2. Don’t be fooled by a text from a “friend” Even if a text or SMS appears to be from someone you know, if someone’s asking you for

money for any reason, you should think twice before taking action. If you really think it’s from a friend or a social media acquaintance, contact them directly by phone or in person to confirm the situation. Chances are that it’s really a hacker who is masquerading as someone you really know to try to convince you to take the bait.

3. Use your head Does it seem realistic that someone could turn your $200 into $2,000 by the end of the day? If it were that easy, surely everyone would be doing it. If it doesn’t make sense to you, that’s because it’s nonsense. Never let your emotions blind you to these facts. Never invest in something you don’t totally understand 4. Never click any links or give out personal information Someone trying to scam you will often lure you into a continuing conversation over text or SMS, then try to get you to click a link to a compromised site - or may even try to get you to reveal personal info like your bank account or Social Security number. Anyone asking you for your money or sensitive financial details is not a giver, they’re just a taker.

Protect Your Devices Dumpster diving, stolen or lost wallets and mail fraud should still be concerns, but the digital age of tablets, smartphones, PCs and Wi-Fi networks leaves people even more vulnerable than ever.

Think about it: Have you ever stored credit card information on your phone for added convenience to make payments in a checkout lane? Do you ever store passwords in apps to transfer funds between accounts? And what’s to keep hackers from accessing a wireless network you check your email on while you’re grabbing a quick cup of coffee?

Following are do’s and don’ts to help protect your connected devices, as well as your electronic identity, from hackers. * Do power down your devices. This disables the internet connection, cutting off access to any personal information stored on your computer, tablet or phone. Unattended machines, especially if you’re asleep or you leave them at home while on vacation, are easy targets for hackers.

* Don’t connect to unsecured wireless networks.

Information accessed on an open network, including email passwords and sensitive bank information, is fair game for hackers. Don’t make their jobs easier. Chances are, if an update is recommended, hackers have already discovered a way to access your personal property and information, so keep your software up-to-date.

Managing Change Between the constant evolution of technology, shifting corporate cultures, changing consumer expectations and global challenges, change is the one constant you can rely on. Employees and business leaders alike can have responses to change that are as unpredictable as the change itself. Some employees embrace change, eager to make the most of what they see as unlimited potential. Others fear it, worrying that everything they thought they knew no longer applies. Most fall somewhere in the middle, feeling wary or skeptical of change - and looking to their leaders for clues as to how things are going. What techniques can business leaders use to become more effective at change management? The training experts at Dale Carnegie offer some guidelines.

1) Evaluate Before the proposed change is implemented, carefully evaluate both the opportunities and potential risks from the change. Anticipate and avoid possible surprises, limiting a domino effect of one change causing further disruptions.

2) Coordinate Because too much change at once can be overwhelming for anyone involved, coordinate efforts with anyone who will be affected in the planning as well as implementation of the change.

3) Commit resources Plan to commit enough time, funding and preparation for everyone who may need to take on new responsibilities as part of any change initiative.

4) Get leaders on board Ensure that all the leaders in your organization are fully committed to the change. Consider how it will affect them by taking their point of view.

Ask questions and make sure every leader is involved in the process to ensure success. All of the organization’s leaders will be responsible for communicating the desired vision for the change initiative, and employees will look to them to understand the need for this change.

As Dale Carnegie once said, “Keep your mind open to change all the time. It is only by examining and reexamining your opinions and ideas that you can progress.�
