From Me To You...

Welcome

to the September edition of Up The Hill magazine!

I heard a comment the other day spoken in a sarcastic tone, “Ah, the joys of getting older!” swiftly followed by a litany of this particular person’s ailments. The sore back, the aching joints, hair growing in mysterious places... I am sure many of you can relate.

In an attempt to retain what physical abilities I still have, I recently signed our family up for a fun run. I do not do this lightly, let me tell you, I have participated in one of these before and there was nothing “fun” about it...

It was billed as a 5K with 17 obstacles. I thought, “I can do that!” I mean really, how hard could it be to run 5 kilometers (a mere 3ish miles) with 17 obstacles interspersed along the route? Even I could stagger between them and make it all the way, raising money for charity at the same time. I resolved to train so that I could get to the end in good time. Of course life got in the way and there was very little training, but again, how hard could it be?

Once I got to the starting line I realized my

folly. This was no leisurely Sunday activity, these people were battle hardened warriors!

Oh, and in case I forget to mention it, the race was set out as a 5k up a narrow track into the mountains where it was “Run or Die!” followed by at least another 5k of obstacles designed to show me just how unfit I was.

I managed to get to a point in the track where I could step to the side and wait for my heart to stop pounding in my ears. Then I took the rest of the race at a jog/walk pace. By the time the obstacles came around I was looking forward to some fun. Nope. The first thing I saw was an above ground pool filled with ice water. Brrrrrr. Next up was a pyramid of hay bales, set up in a quagmire of mud. My legs turned to jelly on that one. My favorite of all the obstacles was the underground tunnel, where I lay down and rested my head for a few seconds, only to hear the grunts of someone behind me. The obstacles only got worse.

A wall to climb, surfaces covered in soap, because why not? At last I saw the finish line!

To get to the end of this torturous day I had to jump over a fire. Yup, real flames. Why not? I couldn’t feel my legs anymore anyway.

I still have the participation medal they gave me, it hangs in my office as a warning to be aware of my limitations.

So why am I doing this again? Well it has been several years since the last race and one of those aging things I forgot to mention?

Forgetfulness. So yes, in a moment of careless folly I forgot my past pain and let my enthusiastic children sway me into signing up again.

Still, I have plenty of time to train, and how hard could it be?

Wolves Football Team and Spiritline 2017 Many of you may know that there was a sudden change in coaching staff at the end of last year.

Luckily the Wolves have come through with a fantastic new coach and staff. Coach Wahlstrom has well over 20 years of high school coaching experience and several of his staff are previous high school coaches in their own right.

We are looking forward to a great season, the Wolves already won their season opener at time of print! The kids are a young team, full of passion and promise and we cant wait to see them grow into strong, young men full of integrity.

The Spiritline program has grown and is looking forward to an exciting competition season. We have some great new flyers and the stunt groups are ready to hit the ground running. The Pom Line has a strong group and you can see them performing at the games with the Cheerleaders.

On Our Cover

You may have heard about our Homecoming Week this year. We are gearing up for a spectacular week of events including Parade, Carnival and Tailgating before the big game.

The Homecoming Parade is scheduled for Saturday 23rd at 4pm. It will start at Starpointe and wind it’s way around to the lake, ending at the boathouse parking lot. The City of Goodyear is closing roads for the event so be sure to plan accordingly. You all love a parade and this is the first one of it’s kind here in Estrella, so get out there and cheer!

We have floats from high school groups and clubs; the Homecoming Royalty will be parading around in convertibles driven by our Estrella Classic Car Club; the elementary schools will be represented and our Spiritline and band will entertain us along the route. Water will be available for purchase so bring some cash.

After the parade we have the Homecoming Carnival at the High School from 5-8pm. Food trucks will be on hand for your dining delight, be careful not to eat too much on the way in so you can have fun on the inflatables!

There will be fun for all with a cakewalk, Ring

Toss, Dunk Tank and more...

Wristbands are required for everyone who goes on an inflatable and are available for purchase in advance. $8 for 18 and under and $10 for adults. On the day of the carnival the price will be $10 and $15. You can buy your writbands at home games, the book fair at EMES, and by e-mailing india.anderson@cox.net. The booths are being run by individual groups and elementary schools and are not included in the wristbands.

Here are 5 smart ways to keep your cool

There was a time decades ago when taking a flight was truly a privilege. People looked forward to comfy seats, cold drinks and friendly service. Today? Not so much. Furry Friends Pets help seniors stay healthier and happier, wherever they live

Pets provide meaningful social support for owners, and they can be especially beneficial for seniors. Ample research shows pet ownership delivers physical and mental health benefits for seniors, regardless of whether they’re living on their own or in a senior living community.

However, many older Americans still mistakenly believe moving into a senior living community means they’ll have to leave their pets behind. In fact, the fear they’ll have to give up a beloved pet is among the top emotional reasons seniors don’t want to move into senior living, according to author and senior real estate specialist Bruce Nemovitz. In an informal survey by Nemovitz, seniors ranked losing a pet as emotionally jarring as having to leave their familiar homes and possessions.

Pet ownership benefits senior citizens in multiple ways, research shows. Older people

who own dogs are likely to spend 22 additional minutes walking at a moderately intense pace each day, according to a recent study

by The University of Lincoln and Glasgow Caledonian University.

Multiple studies have also concluded that pet ownership can help lower blood pressure, contribute to improved cardiovascular health and reduce cholesterol.

Interacting with pets also has many mental health benefits, especially for seniors. Spending time with pets can help relieve anxiety and increase brain levels of the feel-good neurochemicals serotonin and dopamine. Pets can help relieve depression and feelings of loneliness.

The online journal Current Gerontology and Geriatrics Research reports multiple studies indicate dementia patients who interact with animals become more social, are less agitated and have fewer behavioral issues.

For seniors looking for a community that will accept their pets, Cummings suggests a few questions to ask: * What is your pet policy and what type of animal do you consider a pet? Generally, small dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, rats, hamsters, fish, turtles and other small companion animals qualify for pet policies. * What is your pet health policy? Typically, senior living communities that accept small pets will want them to be current on all vaccinations and have regular exams by a licensed veterinarian. * What, if any, kind of training do you require pets to have?

Requiring dogs to be housetrained and cats to be littertrained is standard. Communities will also want to know your pet is well-behaved and not aggressive.

Moving into a senior living community is a big change, one that most residents find positive.

YOLO It’s Time!

Didn’t some musician a few years ago tell the world ‘you only live once’? Suddenly YOLO is printed on T-shirts, subject of social media postings, and became the catch phrase of the week.

Person One, “Why are you eating a sixth donut?”

Person Two shouts, “YOLO!” while stuffing another donut into their mouth.

Eating a half a dozen donuts in one sitting will accelerate the concept of only living once; although it can be a satisfying experience for that particular moment. Did anyone involved with the YOLO craze realize living only once wasn’t a new concept?

Not to brag, but I figured out you only live once when I was in my teens. It was the reason I liked living after midnight and rockin’ till the dawn.

There have been thousands of writers, poets, musicians, and

philosophers who have stated the same thing since humans became smart enough to think of such things. I imagine there were a few people stunned at the realization, suddenly slapped their forehead, shouting, “Oh, my gosh! What have I been doing?!”

I wonder how they changed their lives after that eye-opening moment.

Too often in our go-go-go society, we forget to live for the moment because stopping to smell the roses takes time we don’t have.

YOLO can be a reminder that Life has no rewind button. Some opportunities come along once and they’re gone. What about the first kiss at the end of a date, hugging an older family member, cancelling a vacation, or the big sale that got away?

Opportunity is a bald man with a long beard. He knocks on your door, you had better grab his beard quickly otherwise he turns away, and it’s much hard to grab hold of him.

Life does have some instances where we can take a mulligan or do-over. An example is the total solar eclipse that went across the continental United States last month. Fortunately, you only have to wait until April 2024 for the next one. That missed first kiss might happen on the second date. Hug that family member now before it’s too late.

Reschedule the vacation or learn how to give a better sales pitch.

Paying attention to the ‘Now’ that will have a positive impact on your life. It’s getting that kiss, spending time with loved ones, enjoying vacation, or making that big score. The previous minute is already gone and it’s never coming back. All we have is the now. To that point, THANK YOU for using your minutes to read this article.

THE BUG GUY In every west valley home a spider will someday come…

It should come as no shock to discover a spider in your home.

Every now and then one is bound to discover a way inside – even if it just means they accidentally stepped in right behind you when you came in from the outdoors.

Spiders are a part of the ecosystem that surrounds us and they do a fair job of holding down the pests so we aren’t inundated with flies and other frustrating insects.

Simply knowing about spiders in the area can help you to feel more at ease since you will know if there are any safety concerns for you and your family.

But, when one or more spiders get inside, especially if their numbers and appearances start to grow to uncomfortable sizes, then perhaps it’s time to get professional help.

Spiders range far and wide here in Arizona, and due to our climate, there are some that are found here that aren’t likely to be found elsewhere.

One of these includes the desert tarantula.

Though it isn’t exactly comforting to see one in your home, these are not the large sized tarantulas that some people are known to keep as pets. Desert tarantulas can be up to 4 ¾ inches in size and can have gray, black, or brown hair on their bodies.

They will run

from humans, but if they feel threatened, they will bite. Their bites are comparable to a bee sting and, similarly, some people may be allergic to the venom.

Black Widow spiders are a common occurrence. These spiders are venomous and dangerous, but are very docile and not likely to bite. These spiders are one of the most famous, recognized by their shiny black bodies and a red hourglass on the underside of their abdomen. They are sometimes found along the exterior foundation wall of your house. Their web is haphazard, not symmetrical and very strong.

Their webs are commonly dismissed as abandoned, but this is a misconception as Black Widow spiders do not commonly clean and repair their webs.

The Spiny Backed Orb Weaver is commonly found inhabiting the expansion joints on your block wall. While they can be dangerous, if encountered, they will retreat back into the center of their web. They have a patterned white and black abdomen with orange, red, and black legs. This spider doesn’t even reach an inch across in size.

“It’s vital at any age to adopt good habits to live a long and healthy life,” says Twombley.

Eating a healthy diet does not need to be a chore, she claims. It is all a question of smart choices.

While the answer is not in a single food, or even a handful, adding nutrient-rich foods like these Twombley recommends, and calls the “All Americans” of the functional food group, is part of a winning game plan.

Health News Monsoon-Proof Your Trees For Next Year Love it or not, monsoon season is one time of year we can really recognize as a distinct season.

We have daily chances of rain, wind, dust, humidity, and the most visual marker – trees down!

It seems we accept the annual thinning of our landscape as an inevitable byproduct of our climate. Not so, says the City of Phoenix. They’ve set a goal to have the entire city under a 25% tree shade canopy by the year 2030.

The natural life expectancy of some of our native trees here is upwards of 150 years, but once put into the urban landscape, that drops to 14 years. With all the extra help we give our trees by pruning them, fertilizing, and irrigating, they should live healthier, longer lives, right?

Here are some of the common factors that contribute to the premature loss of our trees: 1. They are over trimmed.

When more than 25% of the tree canopy is removed at one time, the tree responds in a panic. It runs the risk of not having enough foliage to complete photosynthesis so it grows back as fast as possible. The new branches lack proper vascular structure and are weakly attached, making them susceptible to breakage.

2. They are under trimmed.

Dense, thick tree canopies don’t allow the wind to pass through them. Instead, the wind hits the tree like a wall and blows the whole thing over. Instead of one major trimming event per year, give your trees a nip tuck every couple of months.

3. They are sheared with a hedge trimmer.

When only the underside of

the canopy is sheared off, it creates a heavy ring around the bottom. This pulls the branches downward as they grow and they more easily break off in the wind.

4. They are irrigated improperly.

Trees need deep, infrequent water. The goal is to wet the entire root system per feeding so they grow deeper and wider. Frequent water leads to soft wood and major branches down.

5. They were planted with girdled roots. When tree roots are confined for too long at the nursery, their roots circle or kink around the perimeter of the growing container.

Unfortunately, the roots do not straighten out once planted.

6. They were planted too deep.

There is a sweet spot at the base of your tree that should be at ground level or slightly above. If you can’t see a flare at the base of the trunk, it’s been buried. The roots don’t get enough oxygen and their growth is stifled. A small root system can’t give the tree the stronghold it needs to stay upright in the wind.

There’s quite a bit you can do to help your trees survive our monsoons.

With proper selection, planting and maintenance, you can enjoy more shade, potentially increase your property value, and save money.

Hopefully, your investment in your business will pay off in greater income, but, in any case, you will need to balance your personal and professional goals.

Create a retirement plan. As mentioned above, your ability to contribute to a retirement plan may be affected by the amount you put into your business – but that certainly doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a retirement plan. Fortunately, small-business owners have a choice of plans, including an “owner-only” 401(k), SEP-IRA and SIMPLE IRA. Although the various plans have different requirements and contribution limits, they all offer

tax-deferred earnings. Plus, your contributions to a retirement plan may be tax deductible.

Arrange for “backup.” Virtually all working women are familiar with the conflict between their careers and their roles as caregivers.

Women are still more likely than men to drop out of the workforce for an extended period of time to care for young children or elderly parents. And your caregiving responsibilities won’t end just because you are now a business owner. Consequently, you need to have someone you trust available to step in for you when your family obligations call you away from work.

Design a succession plan. When you want to retire, would you like to keep the business in your family? If so, you’ll need to create a succession plan that works for you and whomever you’d like to take control. Such a plan can be complex, so you will need to work with your legal and tax advisors – and you’ll want to give yourself plenty of time to work out the details.

Build an emergency fund.

Maintaining an adequate cash flow will always be a key task – one that involves your sales, billing cycles, inventory and other elements of your business.

One way you can help yourself avoid troubles is to maintain an emergency fund consisting of a few months’ worth of your business expenses. You’ll want to keep this fund in a liquid, low-risk account.

Running your own business can be extremely rewarding, but it’s never going to be an easy road.

However, with perseverance and careful planning, you can smooth out some of the bumps along the way.

A glimpse into the future Recently I watched a movie in which a man took 4000 pictures of the same street scene over a period of 4000 days. At first I thought that this was strange.

But after reviewing in my mind that particular scene I began to realize that even though the picture was of the same street scene the characters changed because different people walked in front of the camera.

What does this have to do with the future? – A lot! Year after year we repeat the same mistakes, look for kindness from a caring and loving God, hope that our lives will be less complicated. And it seems that the picture remains the same – different characters appear in each snapshot of life, but basically we are the same as our ancestors before us and if we could fast forward we probably would see the same ahead.

Living With Faith offering of fealty. Can anyone here imagine answering such a call? If we know anything about who we are as a people, we surely accept the fact that we bend over backwards to offer our children the best that we can and attempt to shield them from harm and danger. Can anyone really believe that we would take our child and kill him or her in the name of God? Well, neither could Abraham. So much has been written about this chapter and the opinions vary.

But the one clear message, to me, is that while God may not really require such obedience, it is evident that our mind can suggest ways for us to exonerate ourselves from our misgivings and in so doing cast the burden on our progeny. We do it all the time – we scapegoat instead of taking responsibility – we blame others for our shortcomings.

Then there is the belief that we learn from this episode that we have a responsibility to a higher calling. And as we learn from the ancients, we must understand that our conscience should be the

deciding factor in our dealings with one another. We all have the potential to do good which rates higher than the actual deed.

Another part of Genesis relates to the creation of existence, as faith would have us believe. It emphasizes God’s role in history.

It sets forth our views and values on civilization. It describes God as wholly sufficient, independent of nature – the unchallenged sovereign of the world who is involved in human affairs. God and the spirit of humanity are woven together to complete the event of creation.

The lesson we learn from the “Beginning” is that we are born with free will, moral responsibility and accountability. There is no free ride. If, however, we want to be a partner with God in perfecting that which He put before us, then we need to accept the duty that is incumbent upon us.

Life As A Caregiver Music and Dogs….

One thing that is helpful to Alzheimer’s patients…and to my mom…is music. Here’s what some experts have said: “Music has power—especially for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

And it can spark compelling outcomes even in the very late stages of the disease. When used appropriately, music can shift mood, manage stressinduced agitation, stimulate positive interactions, facilitate cognitive function and coordinate motor movements. This happens because rhythmic and other well-rehearsed responses require little to no cognitive or mental processing. A person’s ability to engage in music, particularly rhythm playing and singing, remains intact late into the disease process because, again, these activities do not mandate cognitive functioning for success.”

Music therapists who work with Alzheimer’s patients describe seeing some people “wake up” when the sounds of loved and familiar music fills their heads.

It seems to be somewhat true for my mom.

As far back as I can remember, she was always singing around the house.

And even now, she will sing while she’s in the bathroom or when the house is quiet.

No telling why she picks out a certain song, but she usually remembers the

lyrics…and when the doesn’t, she hums it anyway with “deedee”s and “duh-duh”s. It’s funny, because it’s just like many of us.

We can’t remember things we did last week, but we can hear an old rock ‘n roll song on the radio that we probably sang a thousand times when we were oh so much younger, and we remember every word like it was yesterday!!!

Another positive stimulation for Alzheimer’s patients is a pet.

Particularly a dog; our furry friends; our canine companions; our service champions. I can speak from experience here when I say that my dog Buddy has been the BEST medicine for my mom’s Alzheimer’s disease.

Most of us dog lovers and owners have known for years that dogs are great reducers of stress, anxiety and depression, they can ease loneliness, encourage exercise and playfulness, and add real joy and unconditional love to our lives.

So imagine the impact

they have on someone with Alzheimer’s?

The reasons continue to be studied, but more than any other animal, dogs have evolved to become acutely attuned to humans and our behavior and emotions. Buddy loves his “grandma” and watches over her in a much different way than he does me. It’s like he knows that she is indeed special cargo and ‘needs him’. And when she talks to him (and she does often….but she talks to me, often, too!), he listens intently. So do I. So…the lesson here is: let music AND dogs help both you and your Alzheimer’s family member.

Because you both will benefit immensely!
