From Me To You...

During this quarantine phase of our lives we have been looking at the inside of our house more than we used to. I am sure this has happened to you too. After a few weeks, and a few too many home improvement shows, we decided that things could do with sprucing up.

What did we decide to change? Well the lighting was original to the house, circa 2004, so that had to go. What followed was an intense internet search and voila, a box was delivered. Actually 5 boxes. The electrician was called and in a couple of weeks we had an updated lighting package.

Next the adult daughter was moving into her own apartment so that meant furniture moving.

It also meant a free room. We rearranged some things and voila, a new office! My desk (which was actually an old dining room table) is far too big for the new office space so I am ‘making do’ with my son’s desk for the moment. Due to the onset of online school in a few weeks I will be taking a trip to Ikea so that he can have his desk for his work, and I can get one that fits my needs too.

During the move we took a close look at the walls and I thought, “You know, this house could do with a refresh. Let’s paint it!”

Easy right?

Off to Lowes we went and 7 paint samples came home with us. After staring at the samples and asking the opinion of everyone we could think of, a color was chosen. But before we could paint the walls, the cabinets needed our attention. We had painted our kitchen cabinets white a few years ago and they just needed a touch up.

Our bathroom cabinets were a different story.

16 years of 4 small children pouring water on them and scribbling to their hearts content had left a mark, actually several marks. I chose a deep blue/grey for the bathrooms and having finished one bathroom I am very happy with my choice. Cabinet paint has come a long way in a couple of years. In fact it was so easy to paint that bathroom that I took my still wet brush and painted the kitchen island cabinets blue too.

Beautiful!

Next on to painting the rest of the house. In the last 2 weeks we have completed the family room/kitchen, one bathroom and our office. It will be quite a project to complete the whole house especially if I keep getting side-tracked.

It reminds me of the children’s book about giving a mouse a cookie, he is going to need a glass of milk to go with it. The tale goes in a circle ending up with the mouse being thirsty and wanting a glass of milk, then he needs a cookie to go with it...

With the new school year quickly approaching, BUHSD has a few things to share.

The BUHSD Governing Board appointed Rob Roberson as Interim Superintendent on July 2, 2020, after the retirement of Mr. Eric Godfrey.

Mr. Roberson brings 43 years of experience as a high school teacher, coach, and administrator to the position. After 30 years in the Glendale Union High School District, Mr. Roberson came to BUHSD in 2007 to open Youngker High School; where he spent ten years as Athletic Director and three years as Principal.

Mr. Roberson has received many accolades, including being inducted into the AIAAA Hall of Fame in 2018.

On July 20, 2020, BUHSD launched a new website at www.buhsd.org. In addition to a fresh look, the new website is more user friendly. We encourage you to visit the website for information about the district and Estrella Foothills High School. With the physical closure of schools in effect due to the pandemic, BUHSD is providing two learning options for families to choose from.

With option A, students will start in distance learning classes taught by the teachers they will have once they physically return to school.

Instead of coming to campus, students will attend classes through Microsoft Teams each day. Teachers will be able to do video instruction and students can participate in discussions, ask questions, and so forth. As the health of the community improves, we will move into the hybrid stage. Early in this phase, students will still be doing Distance Learning most of the time, but will come to campus in smaller groups for limited periods of time. As things continue to improve, we will bring more students on campus at a time and more frequently. Eventually, the goal is to have all students back on full-time when it is safe to do so.

With Option B, students take classes through our district’s established online program, LC Online. Students progress through curriculum at their own pace and learn course content through resources that they have access to 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Teachers monitor and support students’ progress and are available to help students when needed. For students who choose this option, they remain eligible to participate in activities and athletics at their home campus.

Regardless of which option a family chooses, the staff of BUHSD is committed to providing students with the best education possible in a safe manner. We recognize that our current times are challenging, but we know that together as a team, we can help students progress though until the time we can all be back together on campus in the manner we prefer.

You will not be charged late fees during forbearance as long as you stick to the plan’s agreed terms.To request forbearance or other mortgage assistance, contact your mortgage servicer.

For Renters If you currently rent and need help managing your payments, your first step should be talking to your landlord or property manager about available options. Be sure to keep all mail, email or text correspondence with your landlord, and make detailed, dated notes of any conversations you have in person or over the phone. Ask about payment arrangements, such as a temporary rent reduction. Remember that these may be stressful financial times for your landlord, too.

Desert Hairy Scorpion, AKA the Giant Desert Scorpion. Hadrusus Arizonensis

As summer hits its peak and the valley gets hotter, we start to see big scorpions averaging 4-6-inchs in length (Desert Hairy Scorpions).

Their increase in activity generally corresponds with our monsoon season, starting in mid-July through October. They are generally dark brown to a light straw color with a tail approximately 1.25 times the length of its body. While the Desert Hairy Scorpion can grow up to 10-12 inches in length, that size is very uncommon.

They are classified as an occasional home invader, meaning that they are opportunistic and are not intentionally entering your home.

Ccurrent studies suggest that scorpion venom has two stages: 1) A pre-venom that acts as a very painful paralytic, and 2) The primary venom which is a neural toxin with a wide range of neural affects. Generally, most scorpion stings are not serious, however, call poison control at 1-800-222-1222 and they can answer questions in the event you or a family member is stung.

From a pest control perspective, scorpions can be a challenging pest as their biology is unique in the insect world. They are not always moving and looking for food, which reduces the opportunity for them to encounter applied pesticides.

Here are a few good practices to follow to avoid getting stung by a scorpion: • Do not leave your shoes outside or in the garage. If you do always shake them out!

• Do not store broken down boxes in your garage, they will provide a habitat for crickets, a food source that will bring scorpions!

• Be careful when picking an object up off the ground. Never place your fingers under the edge to lift!

• Do keep your landscape plants trimmed up at least 4-5 inches off the ground. This will reduce the habitat for bugs in general and can reduce the scorpion activity, too.

Overall, the best approach to controlling scorpions is a comprehensive approach that addresses the habitat and reduces food availability.

Business 411 When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.”

There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown.

• The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. It also allows for advertisers to re-position a brand or introduce a new product.

• Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times.

• Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines,

which can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession.

• When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current – and possibly future – sales.

An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.”

Another strategy used by marketers is changing the ad message and using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. Some advertisers will offer interest-free loans, coupons or special promotions to boost sales and market share. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. For some advertisers that don’t give cost incentives, they can change the ad message to being expensive but worth it.

Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides.

Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/ or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share.
