From Me To You...

I have come to the conclusion that I live in a very interesting state. Why? Because nearly everyone here is a transplant. There are very few people born and bred in Arizona. It is a destination state - a place to retire to, certainly, but also a place where the real estate is affordable and the cost of living is comparatively low. A place people migrate to because of the weather at home and the weather here.

Personally I will never forget my last winter in NY when the wind chill had our temperature at minus 17 degrees Fahrenheit. As I shovelled the snow off our sidewalk at 9 months pregnant, (I did this because I discovered that I am liable for accidents happening on the sidewalk in front of our house!) I decided then and there that it would be my last year doing so.

So here we are in this sunny climate, separated form our extended family. I am used to this way of life, having immigrated from the UK at 21, but my husband and most people here are not. It leaves you with a feeling of being slightly adrift.

There is no anchor to stabilize you, or hold you back. Suddenly the question of “Whose house do we go to for Thanksgiving?” or “Why does Aunt Doris always get Passover/Easter?” becomes moot. Now we ask, “What do you want to do this holiday?” Or my favorite, “Where are we making reservations this year?” Sometimes we open our home to friends and family who are also without a destination, sometimes it is just us.

People no longer become my companion because our children are the same age, or do the same extracurricular activity. That is a similarity of circumstance and I have found that it is not a good indicator of folk who share your values and goals. Being in a group of people who live a different lifestyle is never comfortable.

So over time my circle has ebbed and flowed into a solid core of people I love. I can truly say that they are the family I choose, not the ones given to me, and I am content. Some of them have children and some do not. Some own their own businesses, some work for ‘the man’ and a lucky few have retired. The one thing they all have in common is me and I am thankful for them.

Last month a longtime friend who had moved out of state was visiting for my daughter’s wedding, and as she left something she said struck me profoundly. She said that she could see I was surrounded by people who cared for me and that she was glad. She could relax knowing that even though she was no longer around the corner, I had people who would, and did, step up to fill the void she left. Friends who always help when I need it, whether I ask or not. These friends have become my family and I am so grateful I have found them and they have found me.

The downside to the situation, I have found, is that there is no tribe who have to be there when you call. No sister-in-law who will grudgingly watch the kids if you have an emergency, or a gaggle of cousins for the kids to play with and grow up with and build family memories with.

That is a distinct disadvantage.

Decluttering

Getting your house in order can be a struggle, especially as we age. Sorting through decades of belongings is often emotional and stressful, as questions and decisions pile up: Is this jewelry valuable? Will this china set have sentimental value to my children?

A study at Indiana University showed that people with clean houses are healthier than people with messy houses. A tidy home can also mean we’re more likely to invite people over - prompting interactions that can help alleviate feelings of depression and isolation.

With these tips, decluttering doesn’t need to be a dreaded task: * Don’t judge yourself. It’s harder to decide what to do with items that have been in the family for generations than it might be for millennials to decide what to do with items from their college years. * Take it one room at a time. The kitchen is a good place to start the decluttering process, because throwing away chipped dishes and expired spices isn’t as taxing as wading through boxes of paperwork or personal items. Take everything out of the cupboards and spread it all out on a counter or table. Give shelves a good wipe-down and restock them with the necessities,

putting go-to things within easy reach, and donating things that are used less often. Once you feel good about your progress in the kitchen, move on to tackle the garage, office and other spaces where belongings tend to pile up. Like closets! * Keep only what you wear the most. Pick a handful of favorite outfits for everyday wear, social outings and special occasions, and wardrobe staples, and donate the rest. * Stop the build-up before it begins. Keep a recycling bin handy for unwanted credit card offers and coupon packs before they enter the house. Mobile apps like Evernote can help collect and digitize recipes, warranties, instruction manuals and memorabilia to clear away more piles of paper.

At the end of the day, it’s OK to hang on to belongings that are near and dear to you. But for items that don’t hold sentimental or functional value, kick-start a decluttering mission today so you can enjoy a tidier, safer home tomorrow.

A Little Help Volunteers & Students Get “A Little Help From Our Friends”

“We’re gonna try with a little help from our friends”. That line from a Beatles song applies perfectly to a new Cougar Community Volunteers project called “T-Shirts for Tutoring”. Cougar Community Volunteers (CCV) is the volunteer group at Estrella Mountain Elementary School.

Last November, CCV heard Mrs. Marine, the EMES principal, and several teachers discussing the value of a previous after-school tutoring program which had teachers working directly with students on language arts and math. CCV got to work raising money to fund an EMES Spring 2018 After-School Language Arts Tutoring program. The program was successful, so the school and CCV wanted to continue it, but funding was an issue. Instead of asking for donations to directly support the program, CCV

decided to create a non-profit enterprise to fund after-school tutoring on a continuing basis. They came up with “T-Shirts for Tutoring” to imprint and sell custom T-shirts and use the proceeds to pay for after-school tutoring.

In order to implement “T-Shirts for Tutoring”, CCV had to purchase the equipment to cut out custom designs and press them onto T-shirts. That is where “A Little help From Our Friends” came in. CCV contacted several Estrella REALTORS, asking them to help finance the purchase of equipment for “T-Shirts for Tutoring”, and four people stepped up to help. The generous REALTORS are Diana Eklund, Michelle Schmidt, Martin Sears, and Lisa Sowada of the Estrella West USA office. After they learned that all proceeds from the project would support ongoing student tutoring by teachers, they agreed to finance the entire purchase of the equipment and an initial supply of heat transfer vinyl to get things rolling. CCV and EMES are grateful for their support. Without them, “T-Shirts for Tutoring” couldn’t happen.

Money Matters One day “back-to-school” will mean “off to college” for your children. Will you be financially prepared to help your kids cope with the costs of higher education?

For the 2017-18 academic year, college costs were, on average, nearly $21,000 for in-state students at four-year, public schools and nearly $47,000 for students attending private colleges or universities. And you can probably expect even bigger price tags in the years to come.

To help prepare for these costs, you might want to consider putting your money in a 529 education savings plan. All withdrawals are free from federal income taxes as long as the beneficiary uses the money for qualified college, trade school or graduate school expenses. By starting your 529 plan early, when your children are just a few years old, the investments within the plan have more time for potential growth.

Plus, you can make smaller contributions each year, rather than come up with big lump sums later on.

529 plan is not the only educationsavings tool you can use. Your children may be eligible for various forms of financial aid. Some types of aid depend on your family’s income, but others, such as merit-based scholarships, are open to everyone. But you don’t have to wait until you get an offer from a school’s financial aid office – you can explore some opportunities on your own.

Many local and national civic and religious groups offer scholarships to promising young people, and your own employer may even provide some types of grants or assistance.

Consider sending your child to a local community college for two years to get many of the “general” requirements out of the way before transferring to a four-year school for a bachelor’s degree.

Community colleges are typically quite affordable, and many of them offer high-quality programs.

A college degree is costly, but many people feel it’s still a great investment in their children’s future. And by taking the appropriate steps, you can help launch that investment.

Thirsty?

Staying hydrated is a necessity, but sometimes it’s difficult to tell when your body needs water, especially during warmer months. Experts say on average men need 15 cups (3.6 liters) and women need 11 cups (2.6 liters) of water per day.

Our bodies are about 60 percent water, and just losing 1.5 percent can be the tipping point for mild dehydration. Culligan International is offering tips to keep you and your people well hydrated.

1. Bring water on the go. Wherever you are headed, always bring a reusable water bottle.

Have each member of your household choose their own water bottle and label it with their name.

Allowing young children to pick a favorite water bottle provides added incentive to take frequent water breaks. Set the water bottles in a hightraffic area or close to the door so you don’t forget them when leaving home. And refill, refill, refill whenever empty.

2. Drink good water. Not all water is created equal. Filling your reusable bottle with filtered water can ensure it not only tastes better, but is also better for you. Home filtration or

3. Establish hydration routine. If you have trouble remembering to drink water, establish a drinking routine. Start your day with a glass of water, followed by a glass at and between each meal and a glass before bed. Or, drink a small glass of water at the beginning of each hour. Establishing a drinking routine is an easy way to ensure that you reach the recommended water intake each day.

4. Increase intake with workouts. A good rule of thumb is to drink water before, during and after a workout. for short bouts of exercise, 5. Load up on fruits and veggies. Fruits and vegetables are high in water content and an excellent way to complement water intake and stay hydrated. Watermelon, cantaloupe and strawberries are among fruits with the highest water content. For vegetables, it’s cucumbers, iceberg lettuce, celery, tomatoes and zucchini.

Before eating, be sure to rinse produce under filtered water to safely clean and maintain the health benefits. Fruits and veggies are also easy to serve at home and eat on the go.

All manner of bugs can be displaced during the rainy season, most of them are very happy outside!

Termite activity really picks up during our monsoon season, with the ground holding more moisture termites will be more active and more likely to attack your home.

Rodent activity can also increase during our rainy season, keep an eye out for damage to your outdoor furniture, chewed cushions is a common indicator of a rodent problem. Finding shiny objects under your outdoor furniture can be an indicator of a pack rat nest.

Mosquito activity is picking up! What can you do around your home? Make sure that you are not allowing standing water in outdoor plants, wheelbarrows, unused pots, or anything that can hold water, tip them over and empty them. Mosquitoes can breed in as little as a ¼ inch of standing water, and at our temps can reach maturity with 48-72 hours! That’s when they bite! Mosquitoes can also transmit multiple diseases with their bite, so let’s make sure that we don’t allow standing water!

Back 2 School For moms, back to school means transitioning back into routines filled with more activities to shuttle kids and their friends to and from, more homework to keep track of and more chaos to deal with at home. But with a little preparation and an arsenal of secret weapons, moms can get through it, even if it’s simply sharing strategies so they know they’re not alone.

Here are some ways moms say they cope with everything from household chaos to mealtime madness.

Who needs sleep? Unfortunately, most moms handle chaos during the day and revisit other responsibilities late at night after kids are in bed.

In fact, 61 percent have stayed up until midnight or later to finish chores or responsibilities they couldn’t complete during the day. More than 1 in 4 moms have stayed up until 2 a.m. or later.

Summer is a great time to create memories with friends and family, and some of the best times happen when you gather your favorite people together on your deck, balcony, poolside or screen porch. As singer John Mayer puts it, “A little bit of summer’s what the whole year’s all about.”

As you prepare to entertain during these long, lazy days of summer, it’s convenient to keep on hand easy-to-prepare refreshments your guests can snack on as they enjoy the balmy breezes.

Consider the following suggestions for lightningfast, ultra-easy, fresh-tasting treats that can help you welcome visitors at a moment’s notice.

black olives, artichokes, feta cheese, oregano, onion powder and garlic powder. When guests arrive, spread the hummus in a casserole dish, sprinkle on the seasonings, layer the vegetables, then top your colorful creation with the cheese.

Enjoy with pita chips or crudites.

3. Divine deviled eggs: When you keep hardboiled eggs on hand, whipping up these classic favorites only takes a few minutes. Remove the shells, halve the eggs and mash up the yolks with mayonnaise, mustard, vinegar, pickle relish, salt and/or pepper to taste. If desired, you can add even more flavor by stirring in hot sauce, bacon bits, blue cheese, chives, pickles, mango chutney, pesto, pickled okra or crumbled potato chips. Spoon or swirl the yolk mixture back into the half-eggs and serve.

4. Bountiful bruschetta: Slice a crusty baguette, brush it with olive oil and toast the slices under 1. Refreshing blender drinks: Stockpile a your broiler (one to two minutes for each selection of frozen juices and fruits so you can side). Top the slices with a mixture of chopped blend up icy-cold cocktails - either the adult or tomatoes, basil leaves, onion and garlic, mixing kiddie versions - on demand. Because so many in olive oil, salt and pepper and grated Parmesan tasty drinks start with simple syrup or sour mix, cheese to taste. Sprinkle with balsamic reduction you may want to mix up your own and store those and serve. concoctions in your fridge for impromptu events.

When serving, don’t forget the fruit garnishes and little umbrellas.

It’s hard to believe that we are halfway through the year already. July is a good time to make sure that you are making the best choices for your tax health. Here are some tips to help make tax time 2019 less stressful.

• Check your withholding. The best thing that you can do to decrease the uncertainty about your taxes is to withhold the proper amount. July is a good time to do this, because you have enough of the year under your belt to have a good idea about your income and withholding, but enough time to do something about it if you need a change. Take your pay stub from as close to June 30 as possible and write down your year- to-date wages and year-to-date withholding. Double both and subtract your standard deduction from your wages. Check to make sure that you’re withholding the correct percentage of your wages based on the table to the right.

$3,450; the limit for family plans is $6,900. If you aren’t contributing the maximum, but can afford to defer more from your paycheck, increase your HSA contributions to the maximum. It’s a good hedge against a serious illness, even if you don’t use it this year.

• Check your retirement deferrals. Much like the HSA, you may not be deferring as much as you could for your retirement. Increase your retirement deferral as much as you can without putting yourself in a bind financially during the year. There are some limits on how much you can contribute, based on several factors.

• Consider an IRA. If you aren’t participating in a retirement plan at work, consider contributing to an IRA. With meticulous planning, you can know how much your balance due or refund is well before your taxes are due. This can help lessen the stress around tax time.

Senior Living American household demographics constantly change. With kids grown and moved out, many adults are considering remodeling to meet their future needs. This has inspired the idea of aging in place, meaning the desire to have a high quality of life in your home as you get older. In the United States, it’s a desire shared by many.

According to the AARP, 87 percent of adults age 65 and older want to stay in their current home and community as they age. The desire to age in place typically requires making thoughtful updates to a home to accommodate senior needs.

Multigenerational households are also changing for older family members. Sometimes it’s necessary to have elderly relatives move in to your home for them to thrive. Adult children will opt to make remodeling updates so spaces are safe, comfortable and accessible for all.

Whether you’re remodeling for yourself or a family member, there are many things to consider. Making changes where it matters most will help transform the household into a secure space for aging adults.

Bathroom safety Bathrooms are one of the most dangerous rooms in a home, particularly for those age 65 and older who are more prone to falls. When remodeling, add wall supports such as grab bars in the bath, shower and by the toilet. For showers, a folddown seat and handheld showerhead can add comfort. A wall-hung sink adds space below and can make it easier to clean and move around.
