From Me To You...

With the rise in services like Netflix and Hulu, it is easier to catch your favorite show and watch at your leisure than ever before. This has also led to the phenomenon of binge watching - sitting through a season or series at a time. In reality I have been doing my own form of binge watching for years, turning on House Hunters or Friends every night.

There are advantages to screening shows this way. You can fully immerse yourself in the story and follow complicated plot lines more easily. If you are watching a show you have seen before then multitasking comes into play. For example as I write this I am streaming The Big Bang Theory in the background. Bazinga!

Something that occurred to me is that the way shows are written will have to evolve as we turn more to binge watching. I was watching Grey’s Anatomy and when I saw it originally the plot lines made sense. However, once I started watching one episode after another, the stories seemed to speed up. Relationships blossomed, evolved and ended in a matter of hours, not

weeks as I remembered it. The sheer number of disasters also became somewhat comical when viewed that way. I mean, how many horrible things happened to that cast and the poor patients they treated? Subway pole pinning two strangers together, a man attacked by his girlfriend’s lion, near drownings, plane crashes, car crashes, it makes you think twice about visiting Seattle.

Shows like Grace & Frankie and Santa Clarita Diet are released all at once. You can see the whole thing as quickly or slowly as you want. It makes the gaps between seasons harder to wait for but I guess you can’t have everything.

I have also come to realise that the significance of the show you pick has increased in importance. If you dip in and out of a show once a week for half an hour or an hour it is not too much of an investment of your time. Now with binge watching, there better be something that makes one series worth the days or weeks you will be spending together. Something light and silly or a drama that pulls you in perhaps. Maybe a historical romance, you know so you can learn something while you fritter away all those hours.

I was planning on starting Game of Thrones next week but with all the backlash over the last couple of episodes I am rethinking that choice.

On our Cover The models on our cover this month are all graduating Seniors from Estrella Foothills High School. From left to right they are Tori Garnica, C.J. Morris and Sierra Booth.

Tori is headed to NAU in the fall with a view to studying in the nursing program after completing her pre-requisites. It has not been smooth sailing for Tori, she had a devastating loss as a young girl. She was in the car with her family driving along Westar Rd when there was a horrific car crash and she sadly lost her mom. Her elder sister was paralysed from the waist down and Tori was understandably traumatised. She took a while to find herself, struggling emotionally, but is proud to say that now she feels more like her mom than ever. Studying nursing is a continuation of the AP Biology class Tori loved at school and she wants to be able to help others and honor the memory of her mom.

C.J. was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in his sophomore year and had to have someone bring notes to him at home. It was definitely

a struggle to study alone and figure out his classes but he thrived. Despite those challenges he is happy to say he will graduate not only from high school but also into a survivors’ clinic as he is now cancer free for 2 years. C.J. is looking forward to attending ASU in the fall where he will study Electrical Engineering.

Sierra is the winner of the EFHS Scholar Athlete Award and sees her future guiding others as a P.E. teacher. She has been inspired by the staff at EFHS herself, saying that the teachers are always there for their students and she sees them making meaningful connections. Sierra will attend EMCC to start her future endeavours and looks forward to becoming certified in Personal Training and Yoga along the way. Although Sierra has it all together today she also had a hard start in life. Raised in an abusive household, she struggled in the toxic environment until she was moved out of that situation to live with her mother.

Despite the difficulties all of these young scholars have faced, they are shining examples of excellence. Congratulations to all of you and the rest of the graduating class of Estrella Foothills High School. We can’t wait to see what you will all achieve in the next stage in your life!

Chicken & Grape Salad Entertain effortlessly with global flavors Greek Chicken and Grape Salad with Lemon Tahini Dressing Serves 4 Ingredients 1/4 cup tahini 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 1/4 cup water 1 clove of garlic 1 teaspoon honey 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, divided 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, pounded to uniform thickness 1 tablespoon olive oil Coarse ground pepper to taste 1/3 English cucumber, trimmed, quartered and cut into 1/2-inch pieces (about 1 cup) 1 1/3 cups halved red California grapes 1/2 cup chopped scallions, green part only 2 ounces feta cheese, crumbled 3/4 cup chickpeas, rinsed and drained 1 cup hummus 16 romaine heart leaves 1 large whole wheat pita round, quartered

Season the chicken with olive oil, remaining salt, and pepper. Place chicken on grill and cook, without flipping, for 4-5 minutes on the first side. Flip and then cook for another 4 minutes on the second side. Allow the chicken to rest for 3-4 minutes, then slice.

In a medium bowl, combine the cucumber, grapes, scallions, feta and chickpeas; add 1/3 cup salad dressing and toss to combine.

To serve: Portion 1/4 cup hummus on four separate serving plates and place four romaine leaves in the hummus.

Top with the cucumber-grape salad mixture and sliced chicken and serve with a triangle of pita bread.

Directions In a blender, combine tahini, lemon juice, lemon zest, vinegar, water, garlic, honey and 1/4 teaspoon of salt; puree and set aside.

Heat grill or grill pan to medium-high heat.

In Home Sprinklers Seven people die each day due to home fires, so it’s important to be ready. Every home needs working smoke alarms and an escape plan for exiting the house. These are essential first steps, but there is an additional tool that dramatically reduces the spread of home fires, and the risk of dying from one: installing home fire sprinklers.

These systems are an effective method for controlling fires quickly. They’re less common in homes, but they work there just as well.

The risk of dying in a home fire decreases by about 85 percent if sprinklers are present.

Research shows when sprinklers were present, fires were kept to the room of origin 97 percent of the time. That means the sprinkler activates and puts out the fire before it has a chance to spread to other places in the home. The National Fire Protection Association and the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition want you to know these facts: Only one sprinkler activates: If a fire starts, the closest sprinkler will activate, spraying water to control the flames, heat and deadly smoke. That fast control gives you time to escape to safety.

In most cases, just one sprinkler is needed.

Fire sprinklers use less water than fire hoses: When a sprinkler activates, it flows at a rate of 10-26 gallons of water per minute - a fraction of the water that fire hoses use. Because of the sprinkler’s fast action and less water flow, the property loss in a sprinklered home fire is far less than in an unsprinklered home fire.

Home fires are deadly in 2 minutes or less: It takes 9-12 minutes or more for a fire department to get notification, respond and begin suppression. In that time, an uncontrolled fire will grow and spread through the home, becoming potentially deadly in 2 minutes or less. A sprinkler controls the fire before it can spread, protecting residents and the responding firefighters.

Smoke alarms are not enough: Working smoke alarms are essential in every home. But they can only detect a fire, not fight it. Fire sprinklers detect the fire and automatically control it, saving lives and property.

Sprinklers are reliable and easy to maintain: Fire sprinkler mishaps are generally less likely and less severe than home plumbing system problems. For regions subject to freezing temperatures, proper installation eliminates worries. Maintenance is simple.

Farewell

A Final Message as Principal from Dr. Leslie Standerfer As the school year comes to an end and I make the transition to the position of Assistant Superintendent of Academics in the Buckeye Union High School District, I want to let you know that it has been an honor and a privilege to serve as the Principal of Estrella Foothills High School for the past 13 years.

I am proud of the accomplishments of our students and our staff over that time. I appreciate the support this community has given to our school over the years, and thank you for the trust you put in me as you sent your students to school each day.

I will always be grateful for the opportunity I had to be here at Estrella Foothills; working with parents, staff, and the community at large for the betterment of our students. The memories of our students performing, competing, struggling, and succeeding will stay with me always.

This is a bittersweet time for me as I believe in the work we are doing as a district to help our students be future ready and am excited to be a part of that at a district level, but I will miss the close association I have with the students and the community on a daily basis being a campus administrator.

As I make this move though, I want you to know that I will still be working for the betterment of our students at Estrella Foothills High School – just in a different capacity behind the scenes.

And, I leave Estrella Foothills in very capable hands as Mr. Jay Cox comes in as Principal to lead the school into 2020 and beyond.

The Bug Guy Interesting Facts About Centipedes

At one point or another, you’ve probably seen a long, flat, wormlike critter with a ton of legs scurry across the bathroom floor, stop for a few seconds and then race off into a dark crevice. This pest, known as the house centipede, belongs to a diverse group of arthropods found in North America. Often referred to as “hundred-leggers,” centipedes look much more scary than they actually are. Here are some interesting centipede facts to help you better understand this unique type of occasional invader.

The name centipede is misleading. The name centipede literally means “100 legs,” but this pest can actually have anywhere from 15 to 177 pairs of legs. Their legs are long and slender, which helps them to move at a fast speed.

Centipedes are night owls. Some centipede species invade homes, but humans rarely see them during the day.

They typically hide in damp areas around the house, such as bathrooms, basements and closets. At night is when centipedes are most active.

Contrary to popular belief, centipedes are not dangerous.

While they do have poisonous jaws that they use to inject venom and kill their prey, the jaws are not powerful enough to easily puncture human skin. However, centipedes will occasionally bite in self-defense, which can cause some localized pain and swelling, similar to that of a bee sting.

Centipedes are carnivorous. House centipedes feed on many types of small household pests, including spiders, flies, cockroaches and silverfish. All centipedes have poor eyesight, so they detect prey through their antennae. In fact, some centipedes don’t even have eyes.

Centipedes have long lifespans. The common house centipede can live for more than a year, while other species have been known to live for as long as 5-6 years.

Graduation

On May 23rd, the 15th graduating class from Estrella Foothills High crossed the stage at Goodyear Ballpark to receive diplomas. The class earned over 18 million in scholarship offerings.

Here are a few excerpts from the ceremony.

Allen Frost, Senior Class Vice President, provided inspiration to start the ceremony. He stated the class motto, “Our legacy lies in the paw prints we leave behind” and then urged his classmates to “look back at the legacy you created and let it remind you that nothing is impossible when you set your mind to it. Look at the many steps it takes to make it towards your goal, and remember to never stop trying.”

Kylee Phipps, Student Body President, continued the focus on the class motto when she stated, “And as we continue on with our lives, we must remember that although we leave our paw prints at Estrella Foothills, we will imprint them in many places as we look to find our purpose in life - our purpose of life being to live it.”

Daniel Ramirez, Senior Class Treasurer, started his speech reminding graduates of the senior sunrise they attended to start the year and ended his speech stating, “The sun may have set on our time in high school, but it is shining on all of our tomorrows. While we may not share classrooms together anymore, we will share the new found success in whatever the future holds for us.”

Siobhan Ferrall, who graduated with highest distinction reflected on the past four years as she stated, “Tonight is the very last time that all of us will be together in one place. After today, we will all be going our separate ways. Some of us are going to college, some to serve in the military, some to work, and some just don’t know yet.

We’ve grown together over the past four years from timid freshmen to strong, confident seniors.

I am honored to be standing here in front of all of you, the graduating class of 2019, reflecting back on everything we’ve learned. Perhaps the most important lesson that I discovered in high school, and in life, is to live in the moment, because moments don’t last forever.”

Ryan Clements, who also graduated with highest distinction, looked forward to the future as he gave his classmates this advice, “Class of 2019, we have the talent, we have the brain power, and we have the creativity to truly make the world a better place. The way we do that is one kind word or action at a time… We may not feel like we have a lot to give to others, but we do. We give to others when we practice kindness, patience, and forgiveness. I look around at my fellow classmates and I can already see the BEST future teachers, engineers, lawyers, television personalities, and leaders. Pablo Picasso said, ‘The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.’ Class of 2019, find your gifts and live your purpose.”

Lily Mika, Senior Class President, concluded the ceremony with these words of appreciation, “The people sitting here today, in one way or another, have shaped us into who we are. Many of us share a story of feeling a little lost at some point during these past four years. But, with the help of some amazing people sitting among you today, you found where you belonged, met some of your best friends, and made unforgettable memories.

We appreciate the love and support from our family, friends, and teachers; we have learned and grown so much because of you. We are better people because of you.”

Kaitlynn Maggs, Senior Class Secretary, encouraged her fellow graduates to look to the future just before they turned their tassels by saying, “As we turn a new page, a new chapter, remember to look back on the past and learn from your mistakes. This is a fresh start, so make your story memorable… The best moments of our life are still unwritten.”

4. Don’t over-wash. Depending on your lifestyle, hair type and personal styling needs, giving your hair a rest from daily washing can help further protect your hair from damage. Try a good quality dry shampoo to maintain hair’s natural bounce and beauty.

5. Use naturally based products. Avoid potentially harmful ingredients such as parabens, polyethylene glycol, petrolatum, mineral oil, paraffin wax, plastic microbeads, formaldehyde releasers, and harmful colors or fragrances.
