From Me To You...

Welcome to the June edition of Up The Hill magazine!

As a child my parents were god-like to me. They knew everything. They could kiss away my injuries, drive me anywhere without getting lost and answer all my questions with sincerity and authority. Remember, this was before Google which makes that feat even more impressive.

Then the teenage years arrived. I was full of angst and the belief that I absolutely, positively knew everything. By default this meant that my heretofore adored parents now knew nothing. Less than nothing, because they were embarrassing me with their lack of intelligence.

I know, I am cringing too as I write this. I was horrible and my only saving grace is that I am not alone. Look in the mirror, you know you were a piece of work as a teenager too.

Let us fast-forward to the time of my awakening, or as I like to call it parenting 101. I had these squealing, crying, frustrating balls of joy and I again knew nothing. The calls to my Mum became less self assured and more frantic.

“Why is she still crying?”

“What should I feed her?”

“How do I stop them fighting?”

“For the love of Mike, what is that smell?”

favorite whispered one late night as I prepared for the birth of my second child, “Can I possibly have enough love left over for another child when this one has already filled my heart?”

The answer, if you are curious, was that you don’t have to share the love, it doubles.

Just like that my parents were back on top of the hill. Kings of Knowledge. Sultans of Swing. Hold on, that was from a song. But you get my drift...

Now we are travelling along a road of companionship. Equals in our lack of real knowledge, swimming against the current together. There is a wall coming up that I know will be hard to climb, the time when I will be responsible for their well being. When I will have to provide the answers to questions I do not want to hear.

The hard conversations about when to stop driving, where they want to live if their health declines, and end of life care including quality of life. I read a book recently that had an enlightening perspective on that. You should ask your parents what quality of life means to them. Is it the ability to finish a crossword or just to enjoy the taste of chocolate ice-cream? Is their life not worth holding on to if they can’t communicate with their family or when self mobility is lost?

Everyone has a different response and not one is wrong. Once you have the answers to those questions, the book comforts, the other decisions have less weight.

Whenever that time comes I will face it head on, even though as life comes full circle, I am again the one who knows nothing.

Congratulations Grads!

A Message from Dr. Standerfer Principal, Estrella Foothills High School On May 17th, 244 seniors from the Class of 2018 of Estrella Foothills High crossed the stage at Goodyear Ballpark to receive diplomas. The class earned over 19 million in scholarship offerings. Here are a few excerpts from the ceremony.

Reilah Minton, Senior Class Vice President, provided inspiration to start the ceremony. She said of the moment, “I am filled with happiness, accomplishments, sadness, and lastly (and perhaps most importantly) hope. I hope that we will use the tools we were given in the last four years and apply them to our futures. I hope that we are all proud of the mark we left behind and leave tonight with no regrets. And, I hope that everyone will find success and happiness in their future endeavors.”

Rebecca Anderson, Student Body President, thanking those in attendance said, “Thank you all

for your constant support. Without all of you, we wouldn’t be here today. You are our strength and our motivation to be successful.”

Ian Kohli, who graduated with highest distinction and will be attending Georgia Tech after high school, reflected on the past four years as he stated, “Not only have we improved ourselves, we have also left a positive impact on Estrella Foothills High School and created a great legacy.

In our four years here, we have had dozens of students and clubs qualify for state, national, and even international competitions; making our names known and taking home great titles. We have become a 4A school and excelled in sports, setting many new records. We have brought back the Homecoming Parade that the Estrella community had sincerely missed. We earned more scholarship dollars than any previous graduating class from Estrella Foothills High School! With all this is mind, I am so proud to have been a part of such an amazing class. If the last four years are any indication, I think that you are all going to do great things in the future.”

I challenge each one of you, and myself, to do everything we can to reach our full potential. I encourage each one of the graduates here today to reach as far as possible to accomplish their goals. Just imagine the impact a single one of us could have on the world. The future is truly within our hands. We better achieve greatness!”

Jack Svetz, Senior Class President, talked about the different experiences each person has in high school and then said to his fellow graduates, “Everybody here has one same accomplishment – graduating. But, everybody here also has their own separate accomplishment that they celebrated when they walked today.”

Seth Filo, who is the former FBLA State President and will be attending Harvard University after graduation, gave a special tribute to a teacher who is retiring after 44 years of teaching and being a founding faculty member of EFHS. Seth said, “We spend the week waiting for the weekend, the year waiting for the summer, and our lives waiting for change. Instead we need to live in every day, find joy in every year, and make our lives all it can be. Mr. (Marlin) Diller doesn’t spend his school day waiting for the bell. He doesn’t teach all year to get to summer, and he didn’t spend his career waiting for retirement. He

Aliana Jenkins, Senior Class Secretary, ended the ceremony by saying “While after tonight, we may all begin to part ways, we will forever be connected by this moment and our years spent together in high school…we all share memories that will keep us intertwined at the heart.” She then led the graduates in the turning of the tassel before the fireworks rang out.

Money Matters

Father’s Day is almost upon us. If you’re a dad, you certainly may enjoy getting cards and gifts, of course. But, over time, you will gain even greater satisfaction by what you can give your children – such as some valuable financial lessons.

Setting goals – If you are contributing to an IRA and a 401(k), explain how you build these accounts now so you’ll have enough money to enjoy a comfortable retirement someday. And you can bring your children into the picture, too, by telling them that another financial goal is saving enough to help send them to college.

Value of understanding the financial markets – You may actually be quite surprised at how interested your kids are in investing, especially the concept of “owning” companies through stocks and stock-based vehicles. Depending on their ages, you might even want to show them the progress of your own investments and describe how different events can cause the markets to rise and fall, especially in the short term.

Putting time on your side – You might want to emphasize the importance of patience, and how investing is not a “get-richquick” scheme, but a process that requires decades of diligence and persistence. Let your children know that it’s of great value to start investing as early as possible, so you can put time on your side, giving investments a chance to grow.

examples: If you have a car that’s several years old, tell your children that it would be nice to have a new one, but you simply must wait until you can afford it.

Paying debts on time – Tell your children that, no matter how good a saver you are, or how thrifty you try to be, you still have debts, such as your mortgage payment, and it’s important to pay these debts on time. You may not want to get too detailed about the consequences of missing debt payments – bad credit scores may not be that easy for children to understand – but you can certainly mention that if you’re always late on payments, you might find it harder to borrow money when you really need it.

By sharing these principles with your children, you will, at the least, give them something to think about, and you may well find that you’ve helped start them on the path to a lifetime of making solid financial moves. And who knows? If they truly master the ideas you’ve taught them, one day they might give you some really nice Father’s Day gifts.

Estrella Mountain Elementary Earns A+ School of Excellence Award “The application and evaluation process for this program is comprehensive and rigorous.” said Arizona Education Foundation (AEF) Executive Director, Bobbie O’Boyle. “We applaud these schools for exceeding expectations to meet their students’ needs and for achieving overall success despite the many challenges that face the education community statewide.”

Applicant schools are evaluated in the areas of student focus and support, school culture, active teaching and learning, curriculum, leadership, community and parent involvement, and assessment data. The evaluations are based on a lengthy application submitted by the school and a rigorous site visit conducted by a team of trained judges. In the application, each school provides demographic information, a description of current programs and practices,

documentation of parent and community involvement, a profile of the school’s principal and the school community’s commitment to excellence, equity, service, and sustained high achievement.

In their report, the judges said, “The dedicated team of Estrella Mountain is committed to ensuring the students are provided a global experience in a challenging environment in order to live their school’s mission, “to engage and motivate tomorrow’s leaders as inquiring, knowledgeable, reflective and caring individuals who embrace cultural awareness.” Principal Sharon Marine has developed and established teacher leaders, reiterating the school’s success is not on her as an individual, but rather, is everyone together, moving in the same direction at the same time.”

The judges continued, “Meeting with school parents, community members and school volunteers provided a glimpse into how the entire community rallies around the school to ensure a supportive and welcoming school environment for all. One school volunteer …said that the caring environment, innovative ideas and the “good for our kids” attitude of the entire school staff are what keep her coming back.”

The Bug Guy Who invented the Fly swatter?

The first modern fly-destruction device was invented in 1900 by Robert R. Montgomery, an entrepreneur based in Decatur, Ill. Montgomery was issued Patent No. 640,790 for the FlyKiller, a “cheap device of unusual elasticity and durability” made of wire netting, “preferably oblong,” attached to a handle. The material of the handle remained unspecified, but the netting was crucial: it reduced wind drag, giving the swatter a “whiplike swing.” By 1901, Montgomery’s invention was advertised in Ladies’ Home Journal as a tool that “kills without crushing” and “soils nothing,” unlike, say, a rolled-up newspaper might.

Montgomery sold the patent rights in 1903 to an industrialist named John L. Bennett, who later invented the beer can. Bennett improved the design — stitching around the edge of the netting

to keep it from fraying — but left the name.

The various fly-killing implements on the market at the time got the name “swatter” from Samuel Crumbine, secretary of the Kansas Board of Health. In 1905, he titled one of his fly bulletins, which warned of flyborne diseases, “Swat the Fly,” after a chant he heard at a ballgame.

Crumbine took an invention known as the Fly Bat — a screen attached to a yardstick — and renamed it the Fly Swatter, which became the generic term we use today.

Fly-killing technology has advanced to include fly zappers (electrified tennis rackets that roast flies on contact) and fly guns (spinning discs that mulch insects). But there will always be less techy solutions: flypaper (sticky tape that traps the bugs), Fly Bottles (glass containers lined with an attractive liquid substance) and the Venus’ flytrap (a plant that eats insects).

During a 2009 CNBC interview, President Obama killed a fly with his bare hands, triumphantly exclaiming, “I got the sucker!” PETA was less gleeful, calling it a public “execution” and sending the White House a device that traps flies so that they may be set free.

Life As A Caregiver

My mother is in a care facility for Alzheimer’s disease. Those words are still hard for me to say out loud. In fact, I can be out to lunch with friends, at a meeting, or walking my dog, and sometimes those words hit me like a bolt of lightning and the And yet, the word “expectation” is often ignored. tears begin to fall.

I still am her advocate, checking to be sure the care she is receiving is gentle, thorough and done with affection. Which it is.

The take-away here is this: expectation in anything can be your worst enemy if we let it knock us down because it didn’t measure up to what we want or need. Acceptance can be our salvation…or our downfall, depending on how we interpret it.

I’m going with taking a deep breath, doing what I can for her while I’m visiting, and knowing that the situation is what it is. And…praying for strength.

As a certified AMI Montessori guide, mother and grandmother I have been able to observe through my years working with preschool age children that Montessori offers many benefits not only at the academic level but also to developing minds.

Montessori teaches children compassion, selfmotivation, love for learning and abilities through educational experiences.

Here are some reasons why I consider Montessori the way to offer a better education to our children than traditional education.

1. Encourages Independence: Independence is what makes us act on our own, instead of giving others control over our lives, and this is a very important achievement in a human being.

In Montessori, absolutely everything promotes independence; the classroom which we call

“environment” is specially prepared for the child to do things by themselves, all materials present a control of error which allows the child to realize their own mistakes without adult help.

2. Learning Is Fun and Permanent: Learning does not only come from listening to the teacher, learning comes from doing and experiencing the world around them. Children use all their senses to perceive and learn permanently from the activities they have chosen. In a Montessori environment there is freedom, but a freedom with limits; limits that have been established from the beginning and that with the daily living within the community the children respects the materials, classmates, plants, and everything that exists in the environment prepared for them.

3. Meet Children’s needs: In a Montessori environment each child gets the necessary attention to meet their academic and emotional needs.

4. From the Concrete to the Abstract: Montessori allows children to understand how and why things work through the manipulation of concrete material to take them to an abstract thought.

Authentic Montessori Environments Encompass The Following Principles: • Mixed age groups which not only offer a wide range of activities to spark children’s interest but also enable children to learn from others and learn by helping others.

• Freedom for children to work at their own pace, without interruption, choosing from a range of activities that are developmentally challenging and appropriate.

• Exploration is encouraged so that children find things out for themselves, make mistakes and correct them independently.

• Respect for each child as an individual personality with unique talents.

• Respect for others, the community and the environment.

Fire Safety

Think of all the items you replace regularly - your cellphone, lightbulbs and even your toothbrush.

But when was the last time you replaced your smoke alarm batteries, or even the alarms themselves? It’s easy to overlook, but the time to think about fire safety is now - before an emergency strikes.

Many assume that because they have smoke alarms in their homes, they’re protected in the event of a fire. In reality, smoke alarms need to be installed, maintained and tested regularly to ensure they’re working properly. While smoke alarm lifespan and sensing technology have improved in recent years, the fact remains that all smoke alarms - even hardwired and sealed battery models - expire after 10 years.

First Alert offers the following advice to ensure your family is best protected from fire.

Count the alarms - In most cases, one alarm isn’t enough. In fact, the U.S. Fire Administration, recommends smoke alarms be installed inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area

and on every level of the home, including the basement, as well as one carbon monoxide (CO) alarm on each level and in each sleeping area.

Install them properly - Does your alarm ever sound when cooking? Chances are, you’ve installed the alarm too close to your appliances.

An easy way to reduce false alarms and maximize coverage is to take a moment to review manufacturer guidelines and install alarms in the proper locations. Smoke alarms should generally be installed at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance to minimize false alarms. It’s also recommended to install smoke alarms high on walls or ceilings. Remember, smoke rises, so high placement provides a direct path for detection.

Install and maintain - Having smoke alarms is only one part of the story. In order to function properly, all alarms must be regularly inspected and maintained. Make sure to test the alarm, by simply holding down the test button, at least once a month. Also, when testing, it’s important to clean the alarm to remove any dust or debris.

Check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall.

Plan your escape - To develop an effective plan, walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes. Identify two ways out of each room, including windows and doors. Practice your home fire escape plan at least twice a year and make sure to plan a meeting spot.
