From Me To You...

There is something about a front porch that has always called to me. A place to sit and sip, take in the world and let the neighborhood get acquainted with you. It screams Americana to me. One of the iconic things about this country that I was quite surprised did not exist as much as I had thought.

I always imagined that when I bought a house it would have a front porch, complete with a swing, comfy cushions, a flag waving proudly on a pole, a dog curled up at my feet while I sipped coffee and waved my children off to school in the morning. None of that ever happened. Except the coffee - I have sipped a lot of coffee in the mornings as I scrambled through the chaos that is getting children ready for school.

Back to the iconic image idea. As a foreigner moving to this country I imagined many things that I would find. The vastness of the country that one is very true - this country is bigger than some continents. As a young adult I travelled across country by Amtrak. If you ever have the chance, travelling by rail is a wonderful way

to see and appreciate this beautiful country. Its states are as different as countries and are worth taking the time to visit.

Opportunity is another iconic ideal that many people come here for, streets not quite paved with gold but at least the ability to find your place and do well if you try hard. To some extent that is true, I have done well and it was due to a lot of hard work, but that is changing for our children. Despite their endeavors and opportunity the sheer cost of everything is holding them back. Many young adults are either foregoing college because of the cost, or if they do go they are crippled with debt that they will most likely carry well into their 50’s. Families are forced to welcome their offspring back into their homes so they can survive. Not the image I carried in my backpack 27 years ago when I first landed at JFK. Then we moved west. Into the Wild Wild West land of cowboys and rugged desert. Surprisingly there were more front porches out here than I expected, still not at my house though...

I had heard that there were Coyotes and Roadrunners to be found out here. Images of large brightly colored creatures zooming around dodging cunning animals wielding TNT danced through my head. Imagine my surprise to see the diminutive brown bird scurrying across the street one morning without a Meep-Meep to be heard. That was a Roadrunner? Wow, sadly disappointing. Now the coyotes, those I have found to be as wiley and scrawny as in the cartoons, but thankfully with less access to explosives.

Estrella Mountain Elementary Has Best-Ever Finish in Science Olympiad State Competition Science Olympiad is a team competition where students compete in events relating to earth science, astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. There are three divisions: A is K-5 grade, B is 6-9 grade, and C is 10-12 grade.

Estrella Mountain Elementary (EMES) has a Division B team.

Events include hands-on experiments and written tests, as well as portions where you identify objects in a given category. Density Lab, Fossils, Water Quality, Crime Busters are some of those categories. There is also a building category. In the Mission Possible category students build a Rube Goldberg machine, which is like a roller coaster. Thermodynamics, Battery Buggy (Mousetrap vehicle), Boomilever, and Elastic Launch Glider are other building categories.

Each competition is a different level, starting with invitationals, then regionals, followed by the state competition. The team that wins at state continues forward into the national competition.

Although last year we didn’t place in state, we made an epic comeback this year! We were one point away from participating in nationals.

Since our team is very competitive, we have always had our friendly rival, Paragon, which is a science academy that has always placed higher than us in the past. This is the team we followed closely behind this year at state. It’s all in good fun though!

This year we have had many accomplishments.

We have obtained many ribbons and probably won more medals this year than in the past twenty-eight years! Our Science Olympiad team doesn’t discriminate based on skill or level of knowledge, they only look at one’s attitude and effort. We have had so much fun this year, and though I’m leaving this fabulous club this year, I’m excited to see where it’s headed.

This Science Olympiad season our team earned too many ribbons to count and 22 medals, the most medals an EMES team has ever gotten. At the state competition at ASU on April 6, our team earned 190 points and came in at 2nd place.

We’ve come in 2nd place a couple times before, but have never been just one point away from going to Nationals! I’m proud of our team and am glad I got to be a part of it this year. Submitted by Jacob Schank Science Olympiad is a team of students that show their love of all things science. Our group of students goes to multiple competitions throughout the year. There are multiple events to choose from and each student can choose up to four events per competition. For each event, students pair up into groups of two or three (depending on the event) then do science experiments, create builds or even test observation skills.

Why I Grill...

Why do Americans love grilling so much? The reasons are wide ranging. Some grill to relax.

The backyard is their escape, and the flame calms them. Others barbecue for nostalgia.

The grill is a time machine to the best childhood moments. Many grill for the sheer joy of cooking.

The sizzle on the grates, the smell rising to the sky, the juices dripping on the coals. As we celebrate National Barbecue Month in May, the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association looks to grilling celebrities to discover why we love gathering around the flame and to ultimately encourage everyone to grill this summer.

1) Boog Powell, I grill for nostalgia: Orioles legend Boog Powell loves to grill because of a childhood experience. “I started grilling when I was 10 years old when my dad, brother and I made a big slab of ribs on a homemade grill on a family camping trip. It was probably the best ribs

and the best barbecue that I’ve had in my life. I have been hooked on barbecue since then, and I still love it, more now than ever before.”

2) Tobias Dorzon, I grill for my health: Tobias Dorzon, former professional football player, grills for the health benefits and delicious flavor.

Dorzon notes, “Grilling is a healthier alternative because it burns the fat off meats and it uses less oil. Plus, grilling takes less time to cook and it keeps all the nutrients and flavors in your food.”

3) Christie Vanover, I grill for fresh air: Christie Vanover, owner and operator of Girls Can Grill, loves grilling because it allows her to spend time outside. Vanover says, “My motto is ‘Anything that can be cooked in the kitchen can be cooked on a grill.’ I grill year-round, because I love being outdoors and soaking up the fresh air.”

4) Matt Pittman, I grill to bring people together: Matt Pittman, celebrity grilling expert and owner of Meat Church BBQ, “grills to bring people together and make great memories. Our lives center around food. What better way to spend time with friends and family than outside cooking and sharing a great meal.”

Adult Learners The decision to return to school is not made lightly. While earning a degree can be highly rewarding in the form of better career opportunities and higher pay, the path to get there can be filled with challenges, especially if you’re trying to fit school and studies in with your work and family responsibilities. Before you register for that first class, it’s important to consider and plan for how you’re going to get it all done.

Here are top questions every potential student should ask themselves before they begin the journey.

What are my career goals?

If you’re hoping the degree or certification will lead to a promotion or pay increase so you can better support your family, it’s important to know how that will happen. To get a gauge on the local market, search for job openings in your chosen field. Make an appointment with the career center so you can better understand how a certain degree will advance your career or help you meet your goals.

How will I manage the costs of education?

Before you commit to a school, be sure to take some time to uncover resources that will make your education more affordable.

Start by talking to the financial aid office.

Some institutions offer scholarships and financing options, as well as programs that incentivize students to do well. Other costreducing avenues include research scholarships and grants, which may be available to people in certain fields. Also, don’t forget to talk to your employer. Many workplaces offer tuition assistance programs to their employees.

Does the program offer flexibility for my busy schedule?

Earning a degree or certification is a major commitment. For some students, work and family responsibilities can elbow their way into a busy school schedule. “It helps to know the availability and quality of flexible options offered by your school. These offerings can help make your educational experience more manageable and enjoyable,” said Brian Jones, president of Strayer University.

Money Matters Is it a good idea to borrow from your 401(k)?

To begin with, you need to determine if a loan is even available. You can only borrow from your 401(k) if you’re still working for the company that offers the plan, but even so, you’ll have to check with your human resources area to determine if loans are allowed. If they are, you’ll want to weigh the pros and cons before taking action.

On the “pro” side, there’s no formal loan application and no minimum credit score required. Plus, you’re only borrowing from yourself, and you can generally repay the loan with automatic paycheck deductions.

However, you’ll also encounter some “cons” when taking out a 401(k) loan, particularly concerning taxes. When you borrow from your plan, you will have to repay it, along with interest, with money you’ve earned – and been taxed on – and then, when you withdraw it later, you’ll pay taxes on it again. Furthermore, if you leave your employer before fully repaying your loan, the outstanding balance likely will be taxable, although you may

have a grace period in which to pay it off and avoid taxes. And perhaps even more important, taking money from your 401(k), even if you repay it later, will almost certainly slow the growth potential of your account – which, in plain terms, means you may have less money available for retirement.

Of course, if you encounter an emergency, and you have nowhere else to turn, you may need to borrow from your 401(k). And some plans allow hardship withdrawals for medical expenses and other needs, although you’ll still be taxed on the amount you withdraw. But you’d probably be better off if you can prepare for situations in which you need immediate access to a sizable sum.

One way of doing this is to build an emergency fund. You also might find some resources in the part of your investment portfolio. For example, you can always withdraw contributions to a Roth IRA without incurring taxes.

In any case, you work hard to build your 401(k) – so, no matter where you are in life, think carefully about how you will use the money.

Water Safety Two children die every day due to drowning, and 88 percent of children who drown do so while under adult supervision. Many don’t realize that drowning can occur quietly, with no overt signs that the child is in trouble. The good news is that you can follow safety tips - and teach your children skills - to help keep them safe while enjoying water activities. Supervising children vigilantly and creating barriers to accessing water unexpectedly are the first steps in averting a tragedy. Teaching children how to be safe in and around water is one of the most important life skills parents can give their children.

Lindsay Mondick, of YMCA of the USA offers important safety tips to protect your children around water.

Never swim alone. Nobody should swim by themselves, in case of accident. Teach your children that they should never enter the water anywhere without a lifeguard and/or responsible caregiver attending them.

Stay attentive and watch without distraction. If you’re with a large group, or even if a lifeguard is present, designate one person to watch the child or children at all times. If children are in a pool or near a body of water, a caregiver needs to be close, paying full attention and not distracted by a phone or other diversions.

Wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets. Children and adolescents must wear appropriately sized and weighted life jackets in or around watercraft. Non-swimmers and small children should always wear life jackets when near water and while swimming. Adults should also wear them to model safe behavior.

Learn CPR. When seconds count, bystanders may be the first to help, so learning CPR may save a life. If you were CPR certified years ago, take a refresher course. CPR classes are available at community centers, hospitals and the American Red Cross.

Teach basic swim skills early. Not only do most children enjoy swimming lessons, but taking formal lessons can save their lives. Learning basic water safety and swimming skills at an early age helps children cope with potential dangers.

It’s also one of the fastest growing travel trends in 2019. Cleaning Up

American households are sitting on goldmines.

Experts estimate there’s almost a trillion dollars worth of unused items in our homes. Rather than letting those things gather dust, people are digging into their closets, garages and basements to make money back on unused items.

If you want to make some money clearing out things you no longer want or use, consider these smart tips: Have a yard sale: Reach out to your city to learn about any yard sale regulations, then set up shop at your house to sell to people in your community.

Make sure to mark items with a reasonable price and promote your sale to bargain hunters that’ll search through your treasures. This is also a wonderful way to meet new neighbors.

Sell online: You can reach a much broader audience and potentially get more money for things like electronics, toys, clothes and vehicles using an app like OfferUp. Safety is always a priority when selling online and meeting people in-person, and OfferUp works with police

departments across the country to designate safer places to meet, which you can find in the app or by going to SafeTradeSpots.com.

Tap into consignment: Consignment stores have been a staple for reselling for a while, but be advised that it could take the store some time to sell your items, and the store can take as much as a 50 percent cut on your merchandise for managing the transaction. On the plus side, it can be more convenient to let a consignment store sell for you instead of going through the trouble of listing the items yourself.

Post in a neighborhood forum: You can also try posting in your local neighborhood classifieds or on social media. While websites like Nextdoor tend to be more popular for people listing free items, you can offer a discount to your neighbors and plan on quicker sales since it’s easier to arrange pick-ups and drop-offs when everyone is less than a quarter-mile from each other.

Donate: For things you don’t end up repurposing or selling, donate them to a local charity. Many nonprofits accept a variety of items in good condition for resale or auction. Depending on what you donate, you can get a receipt for a tax write-off that can hopefully get you a larger refund the following year.

The Bug Guy Honey Bee Swarms are Common Swarming is a natural process in the life of a honey bee colony. Swarming occurs when a large group of honey bees leaves an established colony and flies off to establish a new colony, essentially creating two from one. Swarming is a natural method of propagation that occurs in response to crowding within the colony. Swarming usually occurs in

late spring and early summer and begins in the warmer hours of the day.

Honey bee swarms may contain several hundred to several thousand worker bees, a few drones and one queen. Swarming bees fly around briefly and then cluster on a tree limb, shrub or other object. Clusters usually remain stationary for an hour to a few days, depending on weather and the time needed to find a new nest site by scouting bees. When a suitable location for the new colony, such as a hollow tree, is found the cluster breaks up and flies to it.

Honey bee swarms are not highly dangerous under most circumstances. Swarming honey bees feed prior to swarming, reducing their ability to sting. Further, bees away from the vicinity of their nest (offspring and food stores) are less defensive and are unlikely to sting unless provoked.

In most situations when a honey bee swarm is found on a tree, shrub or house you do not need to do anything. Swarms are temporary and the bees will move on if you patiently ignore them.

Stay back and keep others away from the swarm, but feel free to admire and appreciate the bees from a safe distance.

You may be able to give a honey bee swarm to a beekeeper who will gather the swarm and relocate it for you. To find a beekeeper willing to capture swarms check with a local beekeeper you know or call authorities such as pest control operators, police and fire departments and the local extension office.

Only if a serious health threat is present because of the location of the swarm, such as in a highly traveled public area, should you attempt to do anything with a swarm. Only as a last resort, you can spray a swarm of bees with soapy water (up to 1 cup of liquid dishwashing detergent in a gallon of water) to kill the bees. Spraying a honey bee swarm is a risky operation because of the large number of bees.

While modern mobility may mean that distance keeps members of a family apart, many families across the country are finding significance in their heritage, and making it come alive in their own ways. Whether tied to holidays or unique meaningful moments, gathering in together helps a family have fun and create new memories.

Here are a few ways you can explore and celebrate your own family traditions.

1. Identify your family’s origins and cultural heritage. Whether you speak with older members of your family to learn more about your background, send off your DNA in a box or explore a genealogy website, now is a great time to explore where you and your spouse’s families came from.

2. Create a family tree to share with your family.

Maybe other relatives can help fill in some of the missing pieces. Talk about what these discoveries mean to all of you, and how they help you better understand some of your family’s traditions, traits and habits.

3. Become a tourist of your origin countries.

Whether you can travel to one or more of your origin countries for real or just become an armchair tourist, find out more about the country or countries your ancestors came from. Taste some food and wine from that region, explore the art and music of that area of the world, immerse yourself in a craft or learn to play a traditional game or sport - like bocce ball if you’re Italian - to help you identify with your origins.

4. Rediscover traditions from your family’s past and recreate them. Talk to your parents, grandparents and other elders in your family who can tell you stories about the traditions and celebrations that may have fallen by the wayside during our busy, less connected modern lives.

See if you can recreate a family tradition to bring the newer generations that sense of history and continuity.

5. Develop new family traditions. What could be better than enjoying a weekly or monthly dinner with your family, serving the food and wine that are part of your family’s heritage?

Learning about family and history is all about making connections with those people who are most meaningful to you.
