From Me To You...

Life stages are an interesting thing. I am constantly checking myself against some arbitrary scale as to where I am in my life.

Because let’s face it, although I am officially in Middle Age, I still feel like a late teen-early twenty something trying to figure out what to do every day of my life. I am constantly amazed to see my adult and almost adult children striking out into the world. Thinking that I had some small part to play in that amazing-ness is a sobering thought.

The latest life stage is one that I did not choose for myself and it has brought up many strange emotions. It has me balancing precariously on the edge of a wonderful precipice. I am soon to become a grandmother. Oh boy, there is that vertigo again. I am thrilled at the thought of a new baby in the family. I am beyond thrilled that there will be a new life to cuddle and love, I am even looking forward to the hard parts (non stop crying

anyone?) So yes, a baby is a wonderful thing. Here’s the rub though. I am going to be shoved into becoming someone’s Grannie. Nana. Bubbie.

What kind of grandmother will I be? Will I start knitting things and finding crinkly wrapped candy in my purse? Will I have to start calling it a pocket book? I am not crafty by nature, well I am capable of starting many crafts but finishing them, well, ahem... cross-stitch in the closet that I started at 16 and have not completed? Baby jacket I was knitting for a child who now has her own baby, still short one sleeve? Paint by numbers scene of a rainy day in London not even recognizable as London yet? Check, check and check again. So do I have to finish all those items and gift them to my granddaughter to be? I think it may be time to clear the decks and ditch all those half completed promises to myself.

A new baby brings a fresh start, and with this not being my baby I get to enjoy all the fun stuff and leave out the sleepless nights and panic at 3 am when she whimpers. I do have the advantage of experience. I know what to do with babies and can help the parents as much as they want me to. I will be there for all the questions and ready to step in and let the parents sleep when they just can’t see straight anymore. But this is not my child and I think that is where the balancing on the edge feeling is coming in. I can’t be ‘all in’ in the way I have in the past with my own children.

I have to be able to step back and detach, enough to let my children become the amazing parents I am confident they will be. I want to be a wonderful gran, and I aim to be the best support for my children, even if that means finishing a project or two.

Now, who wants a Butterscotch? I am sure I saw one in my purse just a minute ago.

This FTC will drop to 26% in 2020. This credit is what makes a solar purchase so advantageous.

Another deadline to watch is that later in the summer, APS will reduce their solar buy back price by 10%.

When you purchase a solar system, your cost for power will be about 1/3 of APS. A cash purchase typically pays for itself in around 7-8 years. It is important to buy a system that provides a full 25-year parts & labor warranty on the panels, inverters (micro inverters), and roof mounting system.

One hidden rate change by APS last year can save you some money on your current power bill.

Most of us were moved to the Saver Choice rate plan last year. As part of that new plan, during the winter months, APS sells half price power (super off-peak) from 10 am to 3 pm, Monday through Friday. If you can move any of your heavy power use (pool pump, washer/dryer, dishwasher, etc) to this time, you will lower you monthly winter bills!

Money Matters We’re getting close to the tax-filing deadline.

For many of us, this means it’s that time of year when we get our biggest financial windfall – a tax refund. If you have recently received a refund, or are expecting to get one in the next few weeks, what should you do with it?

If you’d like to maximize the financial benefits from your refund, you might want to consider other options, including the following: • Invest the money. In 2018, the average tax refund was about $2,700. If you were to receive that amount, you’d be almost halfway to the annual IRA contribution limit, which, in 2019, is $6,000.

• Pay insurance premiums. Let’s face it – nobody really likes paying insurance premiums. Yet, if you have anyone depending on you, you will certainly need life insurance, and possibly

disability insurance as well. And if you want to help protect your financial resources later in life from threats such as an extended stay in a nursing home, you also may want to consider long-term care insurance.

• Contribute to a college fund. It’s never too soon to begin saving for college. So, if you have young children, you may want to think about investing some or all of your refund into a college-savings account, such as a tax-advantaged 529 plan.

• Pay off debts. The lower your monthly debt load, the more money you will have available to invest for the future. Keep in mind, though, that you might not want to look at all debts in the same way. For example, putting extra money toward your mortgage might help you pay it off faster, but you’ll also be funding an asset that might not provide you with the same liquidity as you can get from investments such as stocks and bonds.

• Help build an emergency fund. By building an emergency fund containing 6-12 months’ worth of living expenses, you can help yourself avoid dipping into your long-term investments to pay for large, unplanned-for bills, such as a major car repair or an expensive dental procedure.

Clearly, you can help yourself make progress toward a number of your financial goals with your tax refund – so put it to good use.

Falls & Fractures As we age, we begin to learn - sometimes firsthand - how devastating a fall can be. It isn’t quite as easy as it once was to hop back up and continue on our way. While the majority of falls are non-life-threatening, they can take a serious toll on quality of life and independence. The good news, however, is that most falls are preventable.

Read on for important risk factors and tips for avoiding falls: Lower-body strength - People who have weaker lower bodies or have trouble with balance and walking should take extra precautions. Do exercises that can strengthen your legs and improve balance.

Medication - Any time you get a new prescription, ask your pharmacist or doctor about side effects like dizziness or drowsiness. These can affect your balance.

Footwear - Pay attention to foot pain as it may be a symptom of poor footwear. Make sure your shoes fit appropriately and are comfortable.

Hearing and vision - Get your vision and hearing checked regularly. Problems with hearing or sight can throw off your balance and coordination. Ask your doctor if you could benefit from some vision or hearing aids.

“Falls are more common than many people think, and all of us are susceptible,” said Dr. James Metcalf, a medical director with UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement. “So be aware of risks from your medications, stay active, clear your home of trip hazards and talk to your doctor about strategies you could try to avoid a potentially devastating fall.”

Reading Readiness In Arizona, as in most of the United States, businesses don’t have enough workers with the skills that employers need. Nearly half the American workforce lacks the basic education and communication skills required to get a job and advance, according to a survey of chief executive officers in the US. Many economists contend the solution starts in a child’s early years. Recently, Art Rolnick, a nationallyrecognized advocate for early childhood, was in Arizona to share with legislators and others that the best target for public investment is to invest in children birth to age 5. He pointed to studies that show early childhood investments have up to an 18 percent return on investment.

“We want policy makers to think of early childhood as economic development,” Rolnick said. “It’s the best public investment we can make.”

Children who are prepared for kindergarten are more likely to do well in school and graduate from high school. As adults, they tend to be healthier and earn more. They also are less likely to become part of the criminal justice system or the welfare system. Credit scores impact everything from getting an apartment or home, acquiring loans with decent interest rates and more.

What you can do: Explain that establishing good credit now will increase their ability to borrow later. Help them find a good revolving credit account by checking out sites that assess credit cards in terms of interest rates, annual fee, rewards programs etc.

2. Millennials are averse to debt Most millennials carry higher amounts of student loan debt than their parents did. As a result, they are reluctant to acquire more debt. This behavior is actually smarter and less financially risky on their part, but it results in them having a history with three or fewer credit accounts.

What you can do: Tell your adult children to utilize credit in a safe and sound manner, and to apply for new credit carefully in order to build a robust credit history. Stress that they should never spend more on the card than they can afford. But also advise that they can - and should - pay more than the minimum, and in full whenever possible.

3. Millennials are likely to put off major milestones Because of millennials’ reluctance to assume debt, they may put off major life events such as buying a home until their student loans are paid off.

What you can do: Reassure your adult children that, while some larger life goals may seem out of reach now, their responsible actions such as paying down their student loans will pay off, sooner than they might expect. Encourage them to make more than minimum payments on their student loans to save on interest and eradicate that debt sooner.

While you may be eager to see your adult children settling down in a home filled with grandchildren, they are actually trying hard to put their financial ducks in a row.

The Bug Guy Well it looks like were in for a green spring, here in the valley. With the volume of rain, we have had since August of 2018, I think we are going to have a very busy and very buggy year!

As our weather warms up and our nightly low temps stay above 50-55 degrees, we will be seeing a lot of critters, and with them will come the scorpions.

We have several types of scorpion to contend with “the Desert Hairy Scorpion” and the “Bark Scorpion” these are the most common ones found here. The desert Hairy can grow as large as 6/10 inches and has a very fat tail. The bark scorpion can be as large as 3 inches and has a very skinny tail, the bark scorpion has the more painful sting! And can climb walls.

Safety first always look before reaching under something to pick it up. If you happen to get stung by a scorpion, you can call poison control at 1-800-222-1222 they can help you access the sting to determine if you will need medical

attention or not. If you get stung by a scorpion there is not a way to tell the severity of the sting except by the level of pain and the duration of the event. It is possible to receive a dry sting with little to no venom injected, or you could receive a full hit with a full envenomization.

If you do get stung, it has been described to me as a “white hot metal shard stuck in and both burning and numb at the same time”. The duration of the sting can vary greatly from, as little as several hours to as long as 10 days.

Scorpion venom is a neural toxin, and common pain relievers such as aspirin, Tylenol, Motrin, and Aleve will have a reduced effect, ice packs can help at the site too numb the pain. Should you require medical assistance there is an antivenom for bark scorpions that can reduce the impact by up to 50% Scorpions can be a very challenging pest to control, I don’t suggest the DIY approach.

Positive Parenting This spring, suicide prevention specialists at Teen Lifeline are reminding those who come in contact with teenagers it is a stressful time of year that comes with increased risks for suicide. The reminder comes as the 24/7/365 nonprofit suicide prevention hotline prepares for the average 10 percent increase in calls that are answered each year following spring break.

“Connection to others, hope for the future, access to services, and basic coping and life skills all help reduce risk and ultimately prevent teen suicide,” she adds. “But it takes the entire community to help our most vulnerable teens. It is important to know the things that put your teen at risk as well as the things that will protect them from the risk of suicide.”

Experts at Teen Lifeline are asking parents, educators and community members for their assistance in reducing teen suicide by following the acronym SAFE. S. Search the back of your teen’s school ID. If you have a child in middle school or high school, check the back of your student’s school ID to make sure it has the Teen Lifeline phone number.

If you don’t see

the hotline number listed, contact administrators at your child’s school now and ask to have it added.

Encourage administrators to call Teen Lifeline to implement this lifesaving program.

A. Ask about thoughts of suicide. If you are concerned about your child, it is important to ask them about thoughts of suicide. It is a common misconception that you can give someone the idea of suicide, if you ask about it. Openly asking the question gives your teen permission to talk about their feelings, including the emotions, frustrations or challenges they are going through.

F. Form connections. Strong connections to family, friends and community support are a protective factor for teens. To help prevent teen suicide, form a stronger connection with a teen in your life today. For example, send a text to ask how their day is going, plan something fun to do together, eat dinner together or ask about how things are going in their life.

E. Encourage positive relationships. Many times, a teen’s friends help them feel supported and cared for. These friendships can come through school, sports teams, clubs, church groups and even social media. Encourage connections with peers and adults who are a positive influence in a teen’s life. Think twice before cutting off all contact with friends or social media, which can actually increase risk. Instead opt for allowing some connection to continue but limit the time or duration.

From diet and exercise to making time for selfcare and relaxation, you might be taking steps to make your health a priority. But when it comes to overall wellness, don’t forget about your brain!

Simple lifestyle choices can have a profound impact on brain health. Consider these expert tips to help brain better - at any age.

Exercise: Physical activity is as important for the brain as it is for the body. It changes the brain in ways that protect memory and thinking skills, while also improving mood and reducing stress. So, what are you waiting for? Whether it’s walking, dancing, yoga or even mopping the kitchen floor, find an activity that works for you.

It’s most important that you get your heart rate up and break a slight sweat.

Get your ZZZs: While you sleep, your brain is hard at work restoring information and memories and preparing you for another day. Sleep deprivation has been found to disrupt the brain cells’ ability to communicate with each other, leading to mental lapses and perception and memory problems.

Eat right: Emerging evidence suggests an association between dietary habits and cognitive performance. Research shows that a Mediterranean-style diet rich in fish, whole grains, green leafy vegetables, olives and nuts helps maintain brain health. Additionally, cutting back on foods high in saturated fats, such as red meat and butter, may help ward off a variety of degenerative diseases affecting your heart and your brain.

Look for science-backed supplements: When choosing a dietary supplement, be sure to look for those with research-backed ingredients and demonstrated cognitive benefits. Certain supplements, such as fish oil rich in DHA, phosphatidylserine (PS), coffee cherry extract, B vitamins and folic acid, have shown potential brain health benefits.

Try new things: De-stress with activities you find enjoyable and find support in your loved ones and social network, but don’t get stuck in a rut. Becoming a life-long learner will enhance intellectual stimulation and help keep you - and your brain - healthier and happier. There’s a new game in town and I highly recommend you try it out. The Social on 83rd is a cool, relaxed restaurant - fantastic for a date with your loved one and a wonderful way to introduce your family to new and delicious food. It is tucked behind the Corner Bakery Cafe on 83rd south of Bell Rd, this is one place you should hunt down.

The vibe inside is one that would be expected in a high end establishment that you might find in Scottsdale -- but this is so much closer.

Want to relax with a drink and appetizers outside? There are games and comfortable places to lounge in the garden.

What you really want to know about is the food, right? Well the chef is a treasure I did not expect to find so close to home. Chef David Duarte has years of experience cooking in the finest restaurants (believe me, it shows) and I am so glad he settled here in the west valley.

The food is unbelievable. I have eaten in restaurants around the world and this one is on par with the best I have sampled. I now get what everyone is raving about pork belly - tender, delicious, perfect. I am a lover of mashed potatoes and their accompaniment to the pork did not disappoint. I am going to get a little foodie here... The delicate touch of white pepper in the potatoes was a perfect counterpoint to the unctuous flavor in the Blackberry Demi and Apple Chutney. Yes it was that good. I would have licked the plate if I thought I could get away with it.
