From Me To You...

Now we have text messages, that is something I do love. Text messages allow you to think before you speak and formulate a crafted thoughtful response.

February is the month of love and there are many Sometimes I don’t answer a things I love in my life; my family, my friends, text for a few days which may seem rude, but my job, of course my dogs (when they are not honestly if I’d shot off an answer based on my tearing up my house). There are also things that I initial response it would not have gone well. So don’t love that I used to... if you don’t hear from me immediately it is not always a bad thing.

I remember when I used to love to talk on the telephone. I would rush home from school after The downside of putting everything in writing spending a whole day with my friends, only to is that people decide what tone of voice you’re jump right on the phone as soon as possible and using when they read it. This can mean that if spend hours talking to them again. When my phone rings I barely even hear it! I am constantly changing my ringtone and I even tried to turn the volume up in an attempt to notice when it starts to ring. Even with those modifications, more often than not, I don’t get to it, or answer the calls in time. Just ask my children!

Getting back to the telephone, if you call me I probably won’t answer, and if I don’t recognize your number I definitely won’t answer! If you want to communicate with me you should text me or send me an email. I promise to read it with a smile on my face and when I send you an answer I hope you will do the same.

Kindergarten Prep We are halfway through the 2019/2020 school year, which means we are close to the beginning of many upcoming kindergarteners’ school careers.

I remember being so nervous, for both of my children, as their time for kindergarten, edged near. Being an educator, I may have worried about things, that non-educator mamas, didn’t even consider.

First, I packed them a lunch, so that they could practice a few things...right there at our kitchen table! I set a timer for 15 minutes (sadly, that’s about all the time they get to eat at school) so that they could see what having to devour their food in a limited time was like. We worked on using hand sanitizer, opening packages and juice boxes, and discussed eating first and socializing with friends second. We discussed chewing food carefully and not to be jumping around (or laughing) because I didn’t want choking to be an issue. I’ve seen too many children not eat enough of their lovingly packed lunches because of the above-mentioned obstacles.

(letter sounds, name writing, numbers 0-20, holding a pencil), I think it’s equally important to make sure that children know how to reach their parents/ guardians, should that need arise. It’s important to make sure that your kids know your first and last name, along with your phone number. When I was in kindergarten, I remember having to learn those bits of info, along with my address, in class. That isn’t something that most schools do anymore, so think about adding that to your child’s to-do list before Kindergarten starts, just in case.

Next, I made sure that my kiddos knew how to tie their shoes before school started. As a teacher who has taught kindergarten, I’ve tied about 3 billion shoes! Now, that’s a slight exaggeration, but it sure feels accurate! In all seriousness, you’ll have to trust me...you don’t want your child’s shoes to be untied in the restrooms (think about that for a second)! If your kiddo can’t tie their shoes before kinder starts, I implore you to think about velcro during the week. You can help them to keep practicing the laces on the weekends, until they’ve got it. Your child’s teacher will thank you!

Lastly, avoid drinking too many beverages that are dehydrating - like tea and coffee, soda and alcoholic drinks.

Boost your vitamin intake Many vitamins help keep your skin, hair and nails healthy and beautiful: Vitamins A, B, Biotin (B7), C and K, plus fish oil. These vitamins are found in a variety of foods such as fruits and veggies (especially dark leafy greens), fish, nuts and seeds. To be sure you’re getting enough of all these vitamins, you can also take vitamin supplements.

Protect your skin and hair from the elements If you spend time outdoors, especially doing winter sports, keep your skin and hair covered.

Exposing them to harsh wind, cold temps and winter glare can be damaging. Wear sunscreen to protect your skin from UV damage - yes, even in the winter! Snow and ice reflect UV rays, making them even more damaging than being at the beach in the summer.

Furry Friends Dogs are the best. The best welcome home greeters. The best snuggle buddies. And, the best road trip companions. But, just like humans, dogs have ruff days and health problems from aging and their active lives. They don’t always know how to tell us where they hurt or why they are acting differently, but there are some signs that pet parents can watch for.

1. Less pep in their step. It’s natural for dogs to be less active as they age, but with four legs and boundless curiosity, injuries can happen any time. If your fur family member isn’t sprinting around the backyard like normal, or they’re walking up or down stairs instead of running, they may be experiencing leg or paw discomfort.

A prolonged change in the way they walk or run could be a sign of hip or joint discomfort indicating a chronic condition, according to veterinarian Elizabeth DeLomba. “Medium to large dog breeds in particular are prone to developing joint issues as they age,” says Dr. DeLomba.

2. Missing your snuggle buddy. They’re always curled up beside you during a Netflix binge or keeping your feet warm in bed every night.

But, when your best snuggler starts being anti-social, it may be a sign that they need something more than a cuddle. “A dog acting anti-social may be an indication of a physical problem or discomfort that they are trying to hide,” says Dr. DeLomba.

3. What’s that smell? Doggie kisses are also the best, but not so much with bad doggie breath.

If your dog has consistently bad breath despite special treats and regular teeth cleanings, they may have a tooth or gum issue. Likewise, if your dog is needing to “go” more often, or you start finding accidents in the house, it may be an indication of a urinary issue or problem. If Fido isn’t finishing meals or is not that interested in treats, that’s another sign of possible gastrointestinal distress or other internal issues that may not be obvious physically but may be detected with blood work.

Talk to your veterinarian if your dog is demonstrating any of the above behaviors.

Depending on the circumstance, your dog may benefit from a simple change such as a new diet or supplement regime.

Money Matters Look for Changes in Retirement Plans It might not have made the headlines, but a recently passed piece of legislation could affect the IRAs and 401(k)s of millions of Americans beginning in 2020. So, if you have either of these accounts, or if you run a business, you’ll want to learn more.

The new laws, collectively called the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act, include these noteworthy changes: • Higher age for RMDs – Under current law, you must start taking withdrawals – or RMDs – from your traditional IRA and 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan once you turn 70 ½. The new law pushes the date to start RMDs to 72, which means you can hold on to your retirement savings a bit longer.

• No age limit for traditional IRA contributions – Previously, you could only contribute to your traditional IRA until you were 70 ½, but you can now fund your traditional IRA for as long as you have taxable earned income.

• Limitation of “Stretch IRA” provisions – Under the old rules, beneficiaries were able to stretch taxable RMDs from a retirement account over his or her lifetime. Under the SECURE Act while spouse beneficiaries can still take advantage of this “stretch” distribution, most non-spouse beneficiaries will have to take all the RMDs by the end of the tenth year after the account owner passes away.

• No early withdrawal penalty for IRAs and 401(k) s when new child arrives. Typically, you must pay a 10% penalty when you withdraw funds from your IRA or 401(k) before you reach 59 ½. But now, with the new rules, you can withdraw up to $5,000 from your retirement plan without paying the early withdrawal penalty, as long as you take the money within one year of a child being born or an adoption becoming final.

Some provisions of the SECURE Act primarily affect business owners: • Multi-employer retirement plans – Unrelated companies can now work together to offer employees a 401(k) plan.

• Tax credit for automatic enrollment – The new law provides a tax credit of $500 for some smaller employers who set up automatic enrollment in their retirement plans. And a tax credit for establishing a retirement plan has been increased from $500 to $5,000.

• Use of annuities in 401(k) plans – It will now be easier for employers to consider including annuities as an investment option within 401(k) plans.

The SECURE Act is the most significant change to our retirement savings system in over a decade.

Fitness Myths Americans express growing frustration with fad fitness, social media “fitspiration” and the many myths believed to be true about health and wellness. Here are some commonly-held misconceptions about fitness and the real truth behind them:

1) Myth: You have to put in a lot of time to get results On average, Americans believe they need to work out for 95 minutes for it to even be beneficial. However, recent guidelines from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services note that just 10 minutes of exercise will help raise your heart rate and maintain fitness levels.

2) Myth: Working out is like a five-day work week Nearly half of Americans believe you need to work out more than five times a week in order for it to be effective - and that’s just not true.

Every single episode of physical activity can provide temporary improvements in cognitive function and levels of anxiety. “You don’t have to work out seven days a week, two hours a day,

to get healthy,” says Chris Rondeau, chief executive officer of Planet Fitness. “The key is to just get started and know that every minute truly matters, and over time, can have a significant positive impact.”

3) Myth: Fitness needs to be a competition Studies show that head-to-head challenges are demotivating to the majority of Americans who don’t currently belong to a gym. In fact, 68 percent find leaderboards specifically demotivating. When it comes to individual health, all activity counts, not just your position on a scoreboard.

4) Myth: Social media helps spread the message of health and wellness Quite the opposite. Common “fitspo” phrases such as, “no pain, no gain” or “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” are ineffective, according to most Americans. On the flip side, 65 percent say that inspirational messaging like “investing in yourself” and “a year from now, you’ll be glad you started today,” is motivating.

Yum Yum!

Anyone who has known me since at least 2017 probably knows that I lost 70 pounds doing the “keto” diet. While I don’t claim to be an expert on the diet/lifestyle, I did amass a nice collection of favorite recipes during the 18 months I spent in ketosis. Although I haven’t been strict “keto” for several years now, I have managed to keep the weight off…well, most of it…by continuing to work those recipes into our family’s monthly meal rotation.

Pour salsa over the chicken. I use about half of the 50oz container from Costco, but you’ll have to use your judgment here.

Slice the cream cheese into thin strips (I use Philadelphia brand that comes in 8oz blocks) and place them on top of the salsa. I use two of the 8oz blocks, but again, you’ll have to use your judgment.

Most of the recipes I use are extremely simple… often just three or four ingredients. Some are recipes I’ve created myself and others are recipes that I’ve adapted from their “non-keto” original versions.

That’s it! Bake the whole dish, uncovered, at 450° until the chicken is cooked through, usually about 25 minutes. Serve with green beans or salad for a keto-friendly meal or add tortillas and rice for carbs. Enjoy!

One of our family favorites is called “Salsa Cream Cheese Chicken.” The ingredients are… you guessed it…salsa, cream cheese, and chicken! I use El Sol Homestyle Organic Salsa from Costco. Real homemade salsa would be even better, if you have the time and talent, but the El Sol brand is the closest I’ve found to homemade.

The Bug Guy February 2020, Wow look where we are today!

The Jetsons, that candy-colored cartoon about a family living in the future, was a bit of a time traveler. George Jetson’s flying car converted into a portable briefcase, which is arguably pretty cool. While the car improvements haven’t trended in that direction just yet, the team at Slovakian startup AeroMobil is hard at work on a car that can turn into an airplane and vice versa. At 2017s SXSW, co-founder and CEO Juraj Vaculik said that their invention could launch commercially in 2020.

Our weather in February will average between 42.8°F and 69.8°F. More outdoor activities are enjoyed at this time of the year because, the sun shines for up to eleven hours across the day, there can be light rain showers. The average rainfall days in February are only four, and the precipitation meter reads an average of 0.8” Humidity in February rises to an average of 44%, making

the weather even more bearable.

Western Subterranean Termites Found in every part of the valley, subterranean termites are creamy white and 1/8 inch long.

They live in underground colonies or in moist secluded areas aboveground that can contain up to two million members. Subterranean termites also build telltale “mud tubes” to gain access to food sources and protect themselves from the open air. This termite species is by far the most destructive of all termites throughout the United States.

Termites swarm during periods of higher humidity. Flying termites look very similar to flying ants, if you suspect you have this issue it is imperative that you contact a professional for an evaluation. Termites live on cellulose (wood), they can digest cellulose and produce glycogen. Termites can, eventually due structural damage to your house, if they are undiscovered or ignored. Termites are communal and exist in a very structured society, there is only one queen with attendants, most of the colony is made up of workers. ACE’s

Do you know what may be the most catastrophic public health situation of all time? Adverse Childhood Experiences, referred to as ACEs, have preventable factors that have been found to have a high correlation with risk for cancer, heart disease, diabetes, substance abuse, suicide, obesity, COPD, and premature death. There is a powerful movement sweeping the country, motivated by hope for transformation. People from all walks of life are investing in creating awareness and understanding of ACEs. Research started by the CDC and Kaiser Permanente leaves no doubt that the developing brain of a child subjected to adverse experiences, thereby toxic stress, is at far greater risk of succumbing to one or more of the leading causes of death in adulthood. There are solutions to this problem, but right now data shows a dramatic worsening of ACEs in our youth. Maricopa county is not exempt from this problem. Data from the National Survey of Children’s Health 2011-12 found “the number of Arizona children with 2 or more ACEs is significantly higher than the U.S. as a whole.”

The price tag on outcomes related to toxic stress from childhood adversity is yet another factor compelling society to take note and make changes. According to the CDC, “the economic and social costs to families, communities, and society totals hundreds of billions of dollars each year.” (cdc.gov).

The ultimate goal is prevention of ACEs and building resilience for those who have experienced ACEs. Widespread improvements in policies and practices within organizations, communities, caregiving settings and households can turn this trend around. Just as research has made us aware of the shocking extent of the problem, research is also providing tools and new ideas for prevention and healing.

Understanding substance abuse behaviors as reactive adaptation and mitigation leads to a better understanding of effective strategies for prevention and treatment.
