From Me To You... I have a very unusual dog. On the surface he looks like many other large mixed breed dogs, fuzzy and floppy with an adorable face. But he is not like other dogs.

To start with we chose this breed because one of our children has allergies. The side benefit of this is a dog that rarely sheds. Except for Hank. He sheds, boy does he shed. Five minutes after vacuuming the house there are blonde tumbleweeds rolling across the kitchen floor. He also has allergies. Any cats make him sneeze convulsively. Aerosol sprays do that too. His nose runs all the time. I am often found in front of the dog, tissue in hand yelling “Blow Hank!” Doesn’t help. His allergies also give him red ‘hot spots’ on his belly. So we give him allergy pills that seem to help - and cost a small fortune. He is a sweet boy, however he has issues on top of the allergies. I think he has FOMO - fear of missing out. He has to be the first up the stairs and into rooms, like he is worried he will miss something if he doesn’t see it before us. I quite often fake him out and send him crashing up the stairs while I wander quietly into the kitchen.

“Get out! Get out! Get out!” As long as no-one goes underwater he is fine yelling from the side. Once a head goes underwater he turns into Hank the Lifesaving Lifeguard. He catapults himself into the water - still barking which is comical because he ends up swallowing so much water he starts to choke. Not deterred by the water rushing into his mouth he bravely paddles over to the person in need of rescue and proceeds to try and grab them with his paws. This results in scratches and yelling and everyone leaving the pool. All kidding aside, Hank is my loyal companion, lying by my feet as I work and loving us all fiercely, and I wouldn’t trade him for any other dog in the world.

Hank has two speeds; relaxed, calm companion and hyper, neurotic dervish. We have a retired service animal in the family and we often joke that Hank could do with his own Emotional Support dog. My sister met him for the first time and commented that he was ‘Rather Special’ and I will admit that he is at his best when Mickey (the aforementioned service dog) is by his side. One of his more ‘endearing characteristics’ is his love for his family. Unfortunately this means we can never use the pool until Hank is safely tucked away out of sight and earshot. You see he firmly believes that we can’t swim. He can swim and is very good at it but when we get in the pool Hank’s protective instincts go into overdrive. He barks like a lunatic from the edge, seeming to say Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

Fitness Trends Health and fitness is an area that is always evolving to the point there’s continuously something new to try. Brian Zehetner, Planet Fitness’ Director of Health and Fitness, maps out the five major fitness trends that are likely to make the biggest impact in 2019:

1. 30-minute workouts: People are more time-crunched than ever and they want comprehensive and effective workouts that can be done in relatively short time frames. Ideally, these workouts include both a cardio component and a strength component. We may even see more 15- and 20-minute workout programs popping up this year and beyond! 2. Programs geared toward teens and young adults: Expect an influx of youth-oriented workouts and wellness opportunities in 2019. With new guidelines from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommending at least 60 minutes of aerobic physical activity for kids every day, we expect to see even more youth, teens and young adults reenergizing their daily activity.

Estrella Publishing - Up The Hill magazine

3. Certified training: More and more people are looking to certified trainers to help them not just with exercise form or how to use a machine but help guide them on a plan to stick to for achieving any wellness goals.

4. Mindfulness: Fitness and nutrition have always been a happy marriage when it comes to wellness, but let’s not forget about the benefits of mindfulness and meditation in 2019. This is a critical component of any wellness regimen, too, and there are numerous apps in this space that are growing in popularity. Audio-guided workouts (via apps, podcasts, etc.) is a trend that is expected to continue in 2019. 5. DIY fitness: Our members are requesting more information so they can reach their fitness goals all on their own. People want help, yet see their journey as an independent one, so it’s on us in the industry to provide them with content, guidance and anything else that may help them on their journey. Look for more assistance to come via technology in 2019 (e.g., apps, ondemand content, etc.), as well. To make the most of your fitness journey in 2019 and for resources to help you reach your goals, visit planetfitness.com.

Cookies

Experienced bakers know how to achieve perfect cookies every time. But don’t worry! There’s no need to buy high-priced equipment or enroll in culinary school. Here are a few simple tips for delectable cookies. * Invest in a food scale. This is important when measuring flour, which settles and varies in density if scooped. * Chill the dough. After mixing ingredients, chilling cookie dough prevents cookies from overspreading while baking. * Use parchment paper. Parchment paper on cookie sheets does wonders for preventing overdone cookie bottoms. * Hone your decorating strategy. Use a variety of cookie cutters to achieve perfect shapes. Cool cookies before applying toppings so they won’t melt or run. * Use high-quality ingredients. Make sure your flour and raising agents haven’t sat in your cupboard too long, losing their effectiveness. Here is a classic recipe to delight your family and guests.

Cut with floured cookie cutter. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 6 to 9 minutes or until edges are light brown. Immediately remove to cool on wire rack. Frosting: Combine all ingredients; beat until smooth.

Money Matters Think about your loved ones. What will their future be like? Can you picture your children going to college? Can you picture your spouse or partner enjoying a comfortable retirement? These are all pleasant visions – but what if you weren’t in these pictures? If you were no longer around, you’d leave a gaping hole in the lives of your survivors. The emotional element would be tough enough, but the financial aspect could be devastating to all the hopes you’ve had for your family members. Fortunately, you can help prevent this “worst-case” scenario from happening – if you have sufficient life insurance.

Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t – even when they recognize the need. Only four in 10 Americans own an individual life insurance policy – although 85% say that most people need life insurance. More than one-third of all households

report that they would feel an adverse financial impact within one month of losing a primary wage earner’s income, while nearly half would feel an impact in just six months.

What’s keeping people from providing adequate insurance for their families? Here’s a sampling of the most common reasons: “I just don’t want to think about it.” Like almost everybody, you probably don’t like to think about death. And consequently, you may well be inclined to postpone thinking about life insurance. “I have other financial priorities.” You will always have financial obligations – mortgage or rent payments, car payments, credit card bills, student loans, etc. You can’t ignore these expenses, but ask yourself this: Do any of them really take priority over the future happiness and welfare of your loved ones? “I can’t afford life insurance.” If you think life insurance is prohibitively expensive, you’re not alone. In reality, some types of life insurance, such as term insurance, is highly affordable. As you can see, none of the reasons listed above should really keep you from adding life insurance to your overall financial strategy. So, take action soon to help ensure that your wishes for your family’s future will become reality. Submitted by Chris Carlton of Edward Jones

Online Learning

2. Higher education leads to career success Access to higher education remains the best pathway to career success, directly impacting employment opportunities and wages. The Center on Education and the Workforce found that bachelor’s degree holders earn 31 percent more than workers with an associate’s degree and 74 percent more than those with a high school diploma.

Today’s college students are just as likely to befull-time and part-time employees or members of the U.S. armed forces. Needing flexibility and variety in course offerings, more students are turning to online learning to design a path that fits their lifestyle. The following are some things you might not know about online learning:

1. Each learner is unique “We work diligently to lay the right groundwork for each student at a personal and individual level because we know there is no silver bullet to student success,” said Leah Lommel, COO of ASU Online. “Each learner is unique - what works for one may not work for another. This reality requires a tireless commitment to innovation on the part of higher education.”

3. Flexibility is key Higher ed programs need to be flexible and adaptable, allowing students to study during the hours - or minutes - that fit their schedules. With online programs, students can gain practical knowledge throughout their program that can be immediately applied on the job, making them even more valuable in their current roles. Online learning allows universities to meet students where they are, academically and personally.

The Bug Guy Fear of spiders is consistently ranked as one of the top phobias in America. Whether it is an evolutionary trigger that kept our ancestors alive or the result of Hollywood horror films, spiders have a reputation as being creepy, crawly, venomous pests. But spiders aren’t all bad. They do provide a form of natural pest control by catching insects in their webs. However, a spider infestation can cause contamination of food in kitchens or pantries, and depending on the species, there could be health risks if family members unexpectedly happen upon a web or lurking spider. Taking action to prevent spiders goes a long way in avoiding these risks. Keep garages, attics and basements clean and clutter-free - Most spiders seek out secluded, undisturbed areas where they can build a web to catch their next meal, so an attic or basement that has been left unused over the past season could be harboring these pests. Avoid leaving clothing and shoes on the floor and consider storing them inside plastic containers.

Seal any cracks or crevices around the home Spiders can crawl into homes through damaged window screens or cracks in the siding. The outside of homes should be inspected for these defects seasonally as weather and changes in temperature can cause or worsen existing problems. Inspect items such as boxes of decorations and grocery bags before bringing them indoors Packages are often left on the front step when you’re not at home, and groceries might be placed on the driveway while unloading. These are opportunities for spiders and other pests to crawl onto bags and boxes and be carried inside. Inspecting packages before bringing them into your home reduces this risk. If you have an infestation in your home, contact a licensed pest professional - Being proactive about spider control will reduce the likelihood of any species making a home in your abode and possibly harming a member of your family. But if you suspect you have a spider infestation in your home, contact a pest professional to identify the species and properly remove the pests. Furry Friends Pet owners will do just about anything they can to keep their furry friends happy and healthy, which is why the vast majority of pet owners say they’re concerned about the ingredients in their pet’s food. Yet many dog and cat owners are often confused about what constitutes safe and healthy food and aren’t clear about what types of nutrients their pets need. A lot of thought has been put into the ingredients in the pet food you see on shelves, including nutritional breakthroughs that will help pets of all ages.

Pet food scientists have developed complete and balanced meals that give pets all the nutrition they need in one product. Pet food companies look beyond the latest ingredient fad and develop pet food based on a smart blend of nutrients that supports pets’ overall health.

When developing pet food formulas, scientists keep in mind that some pets have unique dietary needs. They also account for pets who have ongoing concerns and formulate pet food based on age. Simply put, puppies and kittens have much different dietary needs than older dogs and cats. Misinformation and lack of clarity about food science techniques have prompted people to change how they eat. In the pet world, this has led some owners to develop their own DIY food plans. But despite their best intentions, they may actually be depriving their pets of critical nutrients they need to stay healthy. This is where knowing your pet’s nutritional needs comes into play. When it comes to feeding your pet, it’s important to understand that high-quality nutrition starts with nutrients, not just ingredients. Although the level of research may be similar among brands, the actual formulas can be quite different. To keep your pet feeling their best, try to match their food with their lifestyle and activity level. For example, if your dog is your daily running buddy, make sure they are getting enough protein and fat in their diet . When in doubt, consult your veterinarian to better understand the specific needs of your pet.

Decorators Corner It’s here, the season of resolutions. You’re making plans for new routines, working a full-time job and taking care of your family. It’s a whirlwind but you wouldn’t have it any other way. Now you just have to find time to refresh your decor for the year ahead. With so much to do and so little time, you’re naturally looking for ways to update your home without too much effort. Opt for easier with the tips below. * Add a little color to your home. In the summer colorful flowers can make any room welcoming, but in the winter your options for foliage are ... limited. Don’t fret or forgo the opportunity to add some natural accents to your home. Evergreen sprigs added to vases can bring a flora component to any room and infuse a seasonal dash of color. Forsythia is an early blooming shrub that can provide a beautiful pop of yellow color. Place these in the same areas you would summer flowers and you’ll love the fresh effect they create. * Photo-friendly options. Family photos are a

mainstay in any home and this season is the perfect time to take your photo displays up a notch. Free-standing photo panels - available at CVS - provide a new and exciting way to showcase your favorite family moments. * Let there be light. Stringing lights around the outside of your home is an annual holiday tradition, but why not keep inside lights throughout winter? String lights through the main entertaining areas of your home using insulated holders, just be sure to check the wires for fraying before you do. This is a great way to add light during shorter winter days, and because so many lights run on batteries and can be equipped with timers, it’s easier than ever to conserve energy Optimizing your decorating with the tips above will keep your home looking fresh without a lot of effort, and that’s something that will bring you peace and joy this year and beyond.

Travellers With Disabilities Traveling, especially during peak times, can come with lots of hassles. Booking a flight, traversing through a packed airport and getting to the gate on time are just a few things that can cause stress. Then there’s using those tiny on-board bathrooms, and hoping you get your luggage back in one piece. Travel is difficult for the average person, but now imagine doing all this in a wheelchair.

Shaun Castle, a service-disabled U.S. Army veteran and deputy executive director of Paralyzed Veterans of America, has experienced the difficulties firsthand. He has had his wheelchair bent, cracked and even lost in separate incidents. “These are more than minor inconveniences,” Castle says. “If my wheelchair is damaged, it may mean I am stranded until I can get it repaired.” But things could be getting better soon for Castle and tens of thousands of travelers with disabilities with the signing of the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2018. H.R.

302 provides a “bill of rights” and an advisory panel for passengers with disabilities, as well as revised training and procedures for TSA screenings for people with disabilities.

There are some things travelers with disabilities can do to reduce risks, especially during the busy peak travel times. • Write it down. The group recommends attaching written instructions for folding and stowing directly to wheelchairs and scooters. Many airlines have forms online for passengers to complete. Plan ahead. Call the airline a week in advance of the flight to confirm special arrangements and call the TSA Cares helpline 72 hours in advance (855-787-2227) for assistance with security. “This new bill recognizing the rights of travelers with disabilities is a huge move forward, but there’s more work to do,” says Castle. “Paralyzed Veterans of America will continue to work toward accessibility for all Americans with disabilities.” Check pva.org/travel for more tips, resources and to share your travel story.
