From Me To You...

It’s January already and you know what that means? Resolutions! Ideas of things you want to improve upon, or achieve, in the next calendar year.

I usually try not to make any resolutions because I feel I am setting myself up for failure. If they were things I could do, wouldn’t I already be doing them? However, I am always up for a good challenge, so this year I am determined to try and run a 5k. Oh boy, now I’ve put it out there for everyone to see. I have many friends who run, they do 5ks, 10ks and I even know a couple who ran a marathon this year. (Well she was disappointed in herself as she only did the half because she had no time to train, but for heavens sakes if I could run 13 miles without training I would be pleased as punch!)

In order to see if 5 kilometers was even possible I tried running 3 to start. I would say I managed 2/3s of it at a decent pace and had to walk the rest. In my humble opinion that’s how far a normal person goes without training.

In theory I am fit enough to do the race, but my stamina is what gets me. I have been working out consistently over the last year and my strength has improved dramatically (not to brag but I can lift over 100lbs with my legs and a whopping 45lbs with my puny arms) and health-wise I am ready. Now I have to increase the dreaded cardio to get my lungs to stop screaming at the mile mark.

I have done a 5k in the past, but I think I was so traumatized by the experience it has me a little gun shy. I signed up for the Gladiator 5k Fun Run for charity - and to be honest because my friend and I had drunk a glass of wine or two and thought it would be a great idea. We planned on training and of course did nothing to prepare.

realized it was a 5k up into the Estrellas before the 17 obstacles my stomach plummeted. I had no choice at that point, it was run or get trampled under the enthusiastic feet of the other runners. I got through the race and thought the easy part was in front of me. Boy was I wrong, here came the obstacles. The first obstacle was a swim under logs in a pool filled with water and ice. Ice! Fine.

Then came a tunnel. In the ground. I took one look at the tiny hole in the ground and thought, “There is no way I can fit in there!” But I did. And then I found some relief. It was quiet and dark in there. No-one to see if I was moving. So I rested my head and relaxed. Until I heard the next contestant behind me army crawling towards my refuge. The race ended with a leap over a fire pit. At that point I couldn’t imagine jumping over anything but somehow I managed.

I am determined to train and not to repeat my mistakes next time. One might even call that a resolution.

Up, Up And Away Temps have cooled off in Phoenix. The sun will be out early in January 2020 when the hot air balloon races and Street FoodFest return to the Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Arizona. For the third year, the Goodyear Ballpark will play host to the 9th Annual Arizona Balloon Classic featuring the Street FoodFest and will benefit the Valley of the Sun United Way as a Community Partner.

The Valley of the Sun United Way’s mission is to champion youth success and break the cycle of poverty for Valley families. “We fight to end hunger in the classroom, to end homelessness, and to put a stop to financial instability.” A portion of ticket sales will go directly back to the Valley of the Sun United Way programs.

The Arizona Balloon Classic is Arizona’s premier hot air balloon race & festival and will attract up to 20,000 fans and consumers. In 2020, the Arizona Balloon Classic will consist of multiple “Hare and Hound” Hot Air Balloon races.

Actual hot air balloon racing consists of multiple competitions in order to get the closest to the center of a target, which will determine who the winner of the “Race” is. The “Hare” balloon leaves first to place the “Target” and the rest of the balloons; the “Hounds” chase the “Hare” to the target. The “Hound” balloons are subjected to dropping markers onto a large target on the ground. The closer the marker is to the center of the target; the better chances of qualifying for the $2,500 cash purse. Sort of like darts from the sky, except you’re moving where the winds take you.

Races will be open to the public on Saturday, January 25th and Sunday, January 26th. Evening “Glows” on Friday night, January 24th and Saturday night, January 25th. *Weather permitting and all events are subject to change.

The event will be held at the Goodyear Ballpark (1933 S. Ballpark Way – NE corner of Estrella Parkway & Goodyear Blvd. in Goodyear, Arizona).

In addition, there will be hot air balloon rides, hot air balloon tether rides, live music, food, beer tents, FREE inflatables at the QT family fun zone, stunt bike riders, fireworks and more.

Why The Glass Matters Wine connoisseurs know it makes a big difference how your wine is served. From the correct temperature to the glass you drink from, how any wine is presented can change the entire experience. And it’s not just about aesthetics - the size and shape of the glass affects not just how the wine responds to its environment (exposure to oxygen and temperature, for example), but how we drink it. The way you hold the glass, how you tilt your head (consider a martini glass versus a wine glass), where your nose is centered as you sip can all impact your experience of the wine.

What do you need to know so your guests will experience your wine at its very best? Here are some guidelines.

Red wines-In general, the best glasses to enhance the bigger and bolder flavors of most red wines should be taller and have a larger bowl than glasses meant for serving lighter or more delicate wines. Larger glasses allow a wine to breathe more and permit the wine’s flavors and aromas to develop more fully.

White wines-The ideal glass for most white wines will be U-shaped, with a smaller bowl than when serving red wines. One of the reasons is that it helps prevent the wine from warming up too quickly, as whites are best served somewhat chilled. The more upright shape of the glass also allows aromas to be released sufficiently - without losing any aroma - for these lighter wines.

Sparkling wines-When serving champagne, prosecco or other sparkling wines to your guests, flutes or a tulip shaped glass are recommended.

These glass shapes allow the chilled wine to stay cooler longer. Whereas a wider glass would offer too much surface area, letting the delightful bubbles fizzle out more quickly. A narrower glass helps to preserve the carbonation of your sparkling wine longer.

Money Matters If you’re fortunate, you’ll live independently and in good health throughout your retirement years. However, if you ever needed some type of long-term care, such as a stay in a nursing home, would you be financially prepared?

Consider the following: • Someone turning age 65 today has an almost 70% chance of eventually needing some type of long-term care, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

• The average cost for a private room in a nursing home is about $100,000 per year, while a home health aide costs about $50,000 per year.

And keep in mind that Medicare typically pays only a small percentage of long-term care costs. Therefore, you may want to evaluate the following options for meeting these expenses: • Self-insure – You could “self-insure” against

long-term care expenses by designating some of your investment portfolio for this purpose. However, as the above numbers suggest, you’d likely have to put away a lot of money before you felt you were truly

protected.

• Long-term care insurance – When you purchase long-term care insurance, you are essentially transferring the risk of paying for long-term care from yourself to an insurance company.

Some policies pay long-term care costs for a set number of years, while others cover you for life. You can also choose optional features, such as benefits that increase with inflation. And most long-term care policies have a waiting period between 0 and 90 days, or longer, before benefits kick in. Here’s one final point to keep in mind: Long-term care premiums get more expensive as you get older, so if you’re interested in this type of coverage, don’t wait too long to compare policies.

• Hybrid policy – A “hybrid” policy, such as life insurance with a long-term care/chronic illness rider, combines long-term care benefits with those offered by a traditional life insurance policy. So, if you were to buy a hybrid policy and you never needed long-term care, your policy would pay a death benefit to the beneficiary you’ve named. Conversely, if you ever do need long-term care, your policy will pay benefits toward those expenses. And the amount of money available for long-term care can exceed the death benefit significantly.

Ultimately, you may decide you’re willing to take the chance of never needing any type of longterm care. But if you think that’s a risk you’d rather not take, then explore all your coverage options carefully. There’s no one right answer for everyone – but there’s almost certainly one for you.

Hello neighbors, as we welcome in a new year, 2020, let’s take a moment to be thankful for all the positive things that happened in our lives last year.

With all the rain we have had this fall, and winter, I expect a very aggressive explosion of bug activity this spring. Here are a few things you can do to get ahead of any potential infestations.

Take a walk around the exterior of your house and look for ¼ inch mud tubes going from the ground up the foundation of your house. These tubes are an indication of current termite activity.

Look for what looks like a pile of coffee grounds against your foundation wall, this is an indication of a cricket infestation. Scorpions are less active during this time of year; however, they do not hibernate and can be active. Rats and mice are very active during the winter, if you suspect

rodent activity, it is always best to contact a professional to evaluate and propose a solution.

Let’s all be good neighbors and offer a helping hand. If your neighbors are elderly, something as simple as putting their garbage and recycling bins away can have a big impact! All of us want to keep our neighborhood clean, if you see garbage on the side of the road pick it up, always do this safely, not in traffic! Drive respectfully, if all of drive respectfully our neighborhoods will be a safer place. If you’re at the grocery store and need a cart take one from the parking lot. Always put your grocery cart in the designated area in the parking lot. It’s amazing the positive impact we can all have by doing simple, little things to make everyone’s day better.
